Numerical Study of Knocking Combustion in a Heavy-Duty Engine under Plateau Conditions

Diesel engine combustion becomes very rough and can lead even lead to deflagration under high altitude conditions, which is harmful to component durability. In this study, the effects of altitude on the main combustion characteristics—in-cylinder fluid flow, spray behavior, and pressure and temperature distribution—were analyzed with CFD. A numerical model was built on the CONVERGE platform and validated with the optical spray behavior and pressure trace measured by the test bench. The simulation results indicated that the decreases in compression pressure and temperature at 4.5 km led to an over 4 °CA longer ignition delay than those of 1 and 3 km. The combustion efficiency decreased from 90% to 47% when the combustion changed from normal combustion to knocking combustion due to severe spray impingement. Noise significantly reduces the detection accuracy of transient power quality disturbances. It is critical to denoise the disturbance. The purpose of this research is to present an improved wavelet threshold denoising method and an adaptive parameter selection strategy based on energy optimization to address the issue of unclear parameter values in existing improved wavelet threshold methods. To begin, we introduce the peak-to-sum ratio and combine it with an adaptive correction factor to modify the general threshold. After calculating the energy of each layer of wavelet coefficient, the scale with the lowest energy is chosen as the optimal critical scale, and the correction factor is adaptively adjusted according to the critical scale. By 2030, the emissions from UK homes need to fall by at least 24% from 1990 levels to meet the UK’s ambitious goal, which is reaching net-zero emissions. The originality of this paper is to apply the building typology approach to predict energy savings of the UK housing stock under a step-by-step energy retrofit scenario, targeting the Passive House Standard for refurbishments of existing buildings, namely the EnerPHit “Quality-Approved Energy Retrofit with Passive House Components.” The typologies consist of twenty reference buildings, representative of five construction ages and four building sizes. Nonlinear characteristics of a battery energy storage system (BESS) may cause errors in the stored energy between the operation plan and the actual operation. These errors may hinder the reliability of the power system especially in environments such as microgrids with limited power generation resources and high uncertainty. This study proposes a method to alleviate the occurrence of such errors in the charging/discharging scheduling process of the BESS by piecewise linearizing its nonlinear characteristics. There is growing recognition that the degradation of plastics in the environment is a serious problem. This study investigated and reported on the feasibility of removing end-of-life plastics from circulating in the environment. The specific example focuses on non-recyclable plastics found in a waste diversion program for compostable materials, known as the Green Bin Program. The purpose of this study was to identify and quantify the types of polymers in this stream, as well as to determine if it could be successfully turned into char without separation of its components. Recently, due to the corrosion problem in the petroleum industry and the usage of commercial corrosion inhibitors, which, when released untreated into the environment, are considered to be environmentally unfriendly, green corrosion inhibitors are being researched. In this paper, the results of dandelion-root-extract testing as a green corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in simulated brine solution saturated with carbon dioxide (CO2) are shown. The extract’s inhibition efficiency in static and flow conditions was determined by using potentiodynamic polarization with Tafel extrapolation and electrochemical-impedance-spectroscopy methods. In static conditions, the extract was tested at different concentrations. An accurate evaluation of its electrical life is related to the safety and reliability of electric energy output. The traditional arc erosion model only considers the effect of current on contact wear while ignoring the impact of operation conditions (supply voltage and power factor) on electrical life. As a result of the arc voltage, the original circuit topology changes, resulting in an early current zero. In order to further improve the power-generating capacity of the wave energy converter (WEC) of oscillating buoy type, this paper puts forward a novel type where the WEC can move and extract power in five degrees of freedom. We make a detailed hydrodynamic analysis of such WECs. Each buoy is modeled as a floating truncated cylinder with five degrees of freedom: surge, sway, heave, roll, and pitch, and there are relative motions among buoys in the array. Linear power take-off (PTO) characteristics are considered for simplicity. This article presents the results of hydraulic tests performed for a prototype gear micropump of a new design. The development of modern hydraulic systems is following two directions: the integration of hydraulic and electronic engineering and a reduction in the mass and the dimensions of the system. The paper presents a method for assessing operation processes for Fire Alarm Systems (FAS) applied in civil structures, based on use analysis. Individual FAS devices include components with varying ‘lifetimes’ and damage intensities λ. This is because these elements are operated in different internal and external environments. Probability distributions with various damage λ and recovery µ intensity values must, hence, be taken into account for the FAS operation process and to determine the R(t) reliability. The surface properties of coal, interactions with gaseous and vapour media, and knowledge of the pore structure are important in terms of preparation, use, and utilisation of coal. This publication combines new unpublished data with analyses included in earlier publications by the research team to expand and systematise information on the sorption of water vapour, methanol vapour, and the saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons hexane, 1-hexene, heptane, 1-heptene, octane on coals of different ranks. The study showed that the affinity of coal for water and methanol is related to the content of oxygen in the coal rather than the rank of the coal. Water sorption is a multilayer phenomenon, while methanol sorption is a monolayer phenomenon. The water monolayer is greater than that of methanol for low-rank coal, but for the higher-rank coals it is the opposite. The working life of a stack is basically determined by the behavior of its weakest monomer; therefore, during a dynamic loading process, high-voltage uniformity plays a key role in stack durability. This work experimentally investigated dynamic responses and voltage uniformity with different loading strategies from an initial state (open-circuit state) to a target current at subzero temperatures. The results presented that the maximum voltage coefficient variation Cv values, representing the relative standard deviation of the monomer voltage, increased from 19.75 to 35.65 and the voltage uniformity sharply decreased with the increase in loading sizes at the stack temperature of −4 °C. Typically, reinforced concrete and brick masonry construction is the most common construction system of the majority of the southern European residential building stock. However, the lightweight steel framing (LSF) construction system has been progressively assuming a relevant position in the residential sector. Since LSF is not the traditional construction system, the indoor thermal environment of these buildings has not been widely studied and discussed considering the southern European climate context. Therefore, the refrigeration research could not keep itself away from the ever-rising horizon of nanofluid applications. Looking to industrial applications, nanofluid long-term stability and reusability are crucial requisites.
