Numerical Simulation and Economic Evaluation of Wellbore Self-Circulation for Heat Extraction Using Cluster Horizontal Wells
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cluster wells, economic evaluation, heat extraction capacity, wellbore self-circulation
The heat extraction capacity of the self-circulation wellbore is usually small because of the limited heat exchange area. In the paper, the cluster horizontal well group technology was proposed to enhance the heat extraction capacity and decrease the unit cost. Based on the mathematical model of heat transfer, a numerical simulation model of wellbore self-circulation for heat extraction using cluster horizontal wells was established to study the influence of main factors on heat extraction capacity. The economic analysis of heat extraction and power generation was carried out according to the model of the levelized cost of energy. The results show that the enhancement of heat extraction capacity is limited after the injection rate exceeds 432 m3/d (1.59 MW/well). The inflection point of the injection rate can be determined as the design basis for injection-production parameters. When the thermal conductivity of formation increases from 2 to 3.5 W/(m·K), the heat extraction rate will in... [more]

Power Converter Solutions for Industrial PV Applications—A Review
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cost factor, power converters, power loss, PV applications review
As the use of photovoltaics becomes more widespread, new technologies for more efficient energy generation, transmission, and distribution based on power electronics converters are being developed. The most common applications are grid-on, energy storage, hybrid, and high voltage gain applications. These applications impose several additional requirements in the design of power converters associated with the solar battery’s maximum power tracking and operation in a wide range of input currents and voltages. The practical realization of such solutions can be implemented on the basis of various topologies, which requires a preliminary application of criteria for assessing their effectiveness. The paper conducts a comparison of different topologies on power converters based on two parameters that describe their cost and power loss for various PV applications. For a straightforward study, these parameters are represented using the gain factor, which allows for an accurate comparison of the... [more]

Modeling, Simulation and Analysis of Intermediate Fixed Piezoelectric Energy Harvester
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electrical energy, energy harvester, intermediate fixed, piezoelectric unimorph circular diaphragm
To address the problem that piezoelectric energy harvesters are difficult to apply in certain environments, this paper establishes the theoretical study of the intermediate fixed disc piezoelectric energy harvester (IFDPEH) based on the unimorph under concentrated force. The reliability of the model was indirectly verified by numerical simulation and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) simulation. The effects of load, radius ratio (piezoelectric layer/intermediate support), thickness ratio (piezoelectric layer/total thickness), and elastic modulus ratio (substrate/piezoelectric layer) on electrical energy were studied. The results indicate that the radius/thickness ratios of the IFDPEH based on aluminum and beryllium bronze are 0.05/0.31 and 0.05/0.48, respectively. In addition, through parameter comparison, it is found that the most important parameters affecting IFDPEH power are radius ratio and large load. The results are demonstrated to be meaningful for broadening the application of... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fatigue life prediction, hybrid electric vehicle, load spectrum, multi-criteria decision making, rainflow counting, reducer
This article proposes a method for compiling the load spectra of reducers for hybrid electric vehicles. Selecting typical working conditions for real vehicle data collection, the load data under each typical working condition were divided into five categories according to the state of the power source and the data were preprocessed. The optimal sample loads for compiling load spectra were obtained based on a multi-criteria decision-making method, rainflow counting for optimal sample loads was performed according to different power source output patterns, non-parametric extrapolation was performed to obtain the full-life two-dimensional load spectrum after dimensionality reduction, and a full-life eight-level programmed load spectrum that could be used for bench tests was obtained. Using the programmed load spectrum and the extracted sample load as the load input, a fatigue life prediction simulation of the reducer gear of a hybrid electric vehicle was carried out. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: BP neural network, coal bump, coal seam, comprehensive evaluation, impact risk, intelligent
Coal seam impact risk assessment is the premise of coal mine safety, which can reduce the occurrence of underground impact pressure accidents and directly affect the safety, coal production, economic and social benefits of coal mining enterprises. In order to evaluate the impact risk of coal seams more reasonably and comprehensively, and consider the weights of different influencing factors on the impact risk of coal seams, the neural network model is proposed to evaluate the impact risk of coal seams. Mining depth, impact tendency, geological structure and mining technology are selected as the influencing factors of coal seam impact risk. Each influencing factor contains different evaluation indices, a total of 18. The 18 evaluation indices and the impact risk level are normalized and quantified. The BP neural network model for evaluating coal seam impact risk level is established, and the impact risk of 2-1 coal seams in a mine in Inner Mongolia is comprehensively evaluated and analy... Unlocking the Flexibility of District Heating Pipeline Energy Storage with Reinforcement Learning
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: 4th generation district heating, combined heat and power economic dispatch, Markov decision process, mixed-integer nonlinear program, pipeline energy storage, Q-learning
The integration of pipeline energy storage in the control of a district heating system can lead to profit gain, for example by adjusting the electricity production of a combined heat and power (CHP) unit to the fluctuating electricity price. The uncertainty from the environment, the computational complexity of an accurate model, and the scarcity of placed sensors in a district heating system make the operational use of pipeline energy storage challenging. A vast majority of previous works determined a control strategy by a decomposition of a mixed-integer nonlinear model and significant simplifications. To mitigate consequential stability, feasibility, and computational complexity challenges, we model CHP economic dispatch as a Markov decision process. We use a reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm to estimate the system’s dynamics through interactions with the simulation environment. The RL approach is compared with a detailed nonlinear mathematical optimizer on day-ahead and real-tim... [more]

Review of Photovoltaic Power and Aquaculture in Desert
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aquaculture, aquaculture in desert, challenges, desert, possibilities, solar power
PV (photovoltaic) capacity is steadily increasing every year, and the rate of increase is also increasing. A desert area with a large equipment installation area and abundant solar radiation is a good candidate. PV power plants installed in the desert have advantages in themselves, but when combined with desert aquacultures, additional benefits can be obtained while compensating for the shortcomings of the aquaculture industry. The importance of the aquaculture industry is increasing, with aquaculture products approaching half of the total supply of marine products due to sea environmental pollution and reduced resources. Moreover, in deserts, where marine products are difficult to obtain, aquaculture is a good way to save marine products. However, one of the many problems that complicate the introduction of aquaculture in the desert is that it is difficult to supply and demand electricity because the site is not near a viable electric grid. However, combination with PV can solve this... [more]

Accelerated Stress Tests for Solid Oxide Cells via Artificial Aging of the Fuel Electrode
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: accelerated stress tests, artificial aging, impedance spectroscopy, redox cycling, solid oxide cells
Solid Oxide Cells (SOCs) are under intensive development due to their great potential to meet the 2030 targets for decarbonization. One of their advantages is that they can work in reversible mode. However, in respect to durability, there are still some technical challenges. Although the quick development of experimental and modeling approaches gives insight into degradation mechanisms, an obligatory step that cannot be avoided is the performance of long-term tests. Taking into account the target for a commercial lifetime is 80,000 h, experiments lasting years are not acceptable for market needs. This work aims to develop accelerated stress tests (ASTs) for SOCs by the artificial aging of the fuel electrode via redox cycling, which follows the degradation processes of calendar aging (Ni coarsening and migration). However, it can cause irreversible damage by the formation of cracks at the interface anode/electrolyte. The advantages of the developed procedure are that it offers a mild le... [more]

Review of Transparent and Semi-Transparent Building-Integrated Photovoltaics for Fenestration Application Modeling in Building Simulations
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building simulation, photovoltaic, PV glazing, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy, transparent BIPV
Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) have attracted interest due to their capacity to feasibly supply buildings with renewable power generation, helping to achieve net-zero or net-positive energy goals. BIPV systems include many different solutions depending on the application, the PV technology, and the envelope material they substitute. Among BIPV systems, the last two decades have seen a rising interest in transparent and semi-transparent BIPV (T- and ST-BIPV), which add features such as daylighting and solar radiation control. T- and ST-BIPV mainly consist of opaque PV cells embedded in fenestration systems (PV cladding), while most recent research considers semi-transparent PV cells (homogeneous PV glazing) with improved optical properties. The evaluation of T- and ST-BIPV systems in building performance is complex, as it needs to combine optical, thermal, electrical, and daylighting calculations. Therefore, adequate modeling tools are key to the development of these technolog... [more]

Adaptive Neural Network Global Nonsingular Fast Terminal Sliding Mode Control for a Real Time Ground Simulation of Aerodynamic Heating Produced by Hypersonic Vehicles
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: adaptive neural network global nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode control, aerodynamic heating, hypersonic vehicles
This paper presents a strategy for a thermal-structural test with quartz lamp heaters (TSTQLH), combined with an ultra-local model, a closed-loop controller, a linear extended state observer (LESO), and an auxiliary controller. The TSTQLH is a real time ground simulation of aerodynamic heating for hypersonic vehicles to optimize their thermal protection systems (TPS). However, lack of a system dynamic model for the TSTQLH results in inaccurate tracking of aerodynamic heating. In addition, during the control process, the TSTQLH has internal uncertainties of resistance and external disturbances. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a mathematical model between controllable α(t) and measurable T1(t). An ultra-local model of model-free control plays a crucial role in simplifying system complexity and reducing high-order terms due to high nonlinearities and strong couplings in the system dynamic model, and a global nonsingular fast terminal sliding mode control (GNFTSMC) is added to an u... Experimental Study of the Effect of Air Filter Pressure Drop on Internal Combustion Engine Performance
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air filter pressure drop, engine power, hourly and specific fuel consumption, internal combustion engines, smoke opacity
The paper presents the problem of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the operating parameters of a modern internal combustion engine with compression ignition. A literature analysis of the results of investigations of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the filling, power and fuel consumption of carburetor and diesel engines with classical injection system was carried out. It was shown that each increase in the air filter pressure drop Δpf by 1 kPa results in an average decrease in engine power by SI 1−1.5% and an increase in specific fuel consumption by about 0.7. For compression ignition engines, the values are 0.4−0.6% decrease in power and 0.3−0.5% increase in specific fuel consumption. The values of the permissible resistance of the air filter flow Δpfdop determined from the condition of 3% decrease in engine power are given, which are at the level of 2.5−4.0 kPa—passenger car engines, 4−7 kPa—truck engines and 9−12 kPa—special purpose vehicles. A Feasibility Study of Developing eLCV Shared Architecture in Taiwan
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: bass diffusion model, eLCV, shared architecture, vehicle electrification
Vehicle electrification has become an important strategy adopted worldwide, including in Taiwan, as a means to achieving net zero emissions. Taiwan is capable of building a whole light commercial vehicle and has technological strength in producing critical EV parts. This study applies the Bass diffusion model to assess the feasibility of developing eLCV shared architecture in Taiwan and estimates that the annual replacement demand for eLCVs could reach 20,221 units. This exceeds the threshold number of 5000 units, which could motivate the automakers to develop eLCV shared architecture. The simulation result shows that achieving full market penetration would take at least 13 years and would be highly correlated with policy support, the vehicle selling price and the battery pack price. The B2B model is a suitable way of introducing eLCVs into the logistics fleets. In the initial promotion phase, policy support and complementary measures would be needed, e.g., public sectors’ purchases, f... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: accuracy, flow channel, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells, water content, WCR model
The performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is directly affected by the nonlinear variations in water content. To study the variation in water content and its effect on PEMFC performance, the water condensation rate (WCR) model is established, which determines the proportional relationship between evaporation and condensation rates in terms of the switch function, and the two-phase flow evolution and pressure drop are considered as well. The WCR model is imported into Fluent software through a user-defined function for simulation, and the test system is established under different operating conditions. Then, the contours of H2O molar concentrations and polarization curves are analyzed and compared. The results show that the condensation rate value of the cathode channel is from 1.05 to 1.55 times higher than that of the anode channel. The WCR model can predict the variation in water content and improve the accuracy of the performance calculation by from 9% to 31%. T... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: BP neural network, early warning model, island petrochemical park, PSO, warning indicator system
Island-type petrochemical parks have gradually become the ‘trend’ in establishing new parks because of the security advantages brought by their unique geographical locations. However, due to the frequent occurrence of natural disasters and difficulties in rescue in island-type parks, an early warning model is urgently needed to provide a basis for risk management. Previous research on early warning models of island-type parks seldom considered the particularity. In this study, the early warning indicator system is used as the input parameter to construct the early warning model of an island-type petrochemical park based on the back propagation (BP) neural network, and an actual island-type petrochemical park was used as a case to illustrate the model. Firstly, the safety influencing factors were screened by designing questionnaires and then an early warning indicator system was established. Teaching Power-Sector Models Social and Political Awareness
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: complexity management, energy system, energy transition, framework scenarios, power-sector model, socioeconomic scenarios, uncertainty reduction
Energy-system scenarios are widely used to relate the developments of the energy supply and the resulting carbon-emission pathways to political measures. To enable scenario analyses that adequately capture the variability of renewable-energy resources, a specialised type of power-sector model (PSM) has been developed since the beginning of this century, which uses input data with hourly resolution at the national or subnational levels. These models focus on techno-economic-system optimisation, which needs to be complemented with expert socioeconomic knowledge in order to prevent solutions that may be socially inacceptable or that oppose political goals. A way to integrate such knowledge into energy-system analysis is to use information from framework scenarios with a suitable geographical and technological focus. We propose a novel methodology to link framework scenarios to a PSM by applying complexity-management methods that enable a flexible choice of base scenarios that are tailored... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: effectiveness, exchanger, heat pipe, Machine Learning
This paper details the selection of machine learning models for predicting the effectiveness of a heat pipe system in a concentric tube exchanger. Heat exchanger experiments with methanol as the working fluid were conducted. The value of the angle varied from 0° to 90°, values of temperature varied from 50 °C to 70 °C, and the flow rate varied from 40 to 120 litres per min. Multiple experiments were conducted at different combinations of the input parameters and the effectiveness was measured for each trial. Multiple machine learning algorithms were taken into consideration for prediction. Experimental data were divided into subsets and the performance of the machine learning model was analysed for each of the subsets. For the overall analysis, which included all the three parameters, the random forest algorithm returned the best results with a mean average error of 1.176 and root-mean-square-error of 1.542.

Interactions between Seismic Safety and Energy Efficiency for Masonry Infill Walls: A Shift of the Paradigm
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: costs, energy performance, masonry infill walls, strengthening interventions, structural safety
Currently, the upgrade of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings focuses only on energy retrofitting measures due to the current policies promoted in the scope of the European Green Deal. However, the structural deficiencies are not eliminated, leaving the building seriously unsafe despite the investment, particularly in seismic-prone regions. Moreover, the envelopes of existing RC buildings are responsible for their energy efficiency and seismic performance, but these two performance indicators are not usually correlated. They are frequently analyzed independently from each other. Based on this motivation, this research aimed to perform a holistic performance assessment of five different types of masonry infill walls (i.e., two non-strengthened walls, two walls with seismic strengthening, and one wall with energy strengthening). This performance assessment was performed in a three-step procedure: (i) energy performance assessment by analyzing the heat transfer coefficient of each... [more]

Improved Thermal Switch Based on an Adsorption Material in a Heat Pipe
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adsorbent, heat pipe, heat switch, thermal management, thermal switch, zeolite
For many applications, the possibility of controlling heat flow by “thermal switching” can be very beneficial. In previous work, we presented a novel approach for thermal switching using a water-loaded adsorbent as part of the evaporator of a heat pipe. The basic idea is that the adsorbent releases water upon exceeding a certain evaporator temperature and thus “activates” the heat pipe by providing the working fluid for thermal transport. In this work, we present an improved version of the heat switch. We found that an ordinary copper heat pipe (i.e., thermosyphon) with outer diameters common in heat pipe applications (10 mm) can be used as a base of the heat switch. The reversibility of the switching effect was proven. The location of heat input relative to the adsorbent position was optimized, leading to improved switching ratios of up to 36 as calculated from thermal resistance change between evaporator and condenser. Furthermore, the role of the insulation on thermal resistance and... [more]

The Current Status and Lost Biogas Production Potential of Kazakhstan from Anaerobic Digestion of Livestock and Poultry Manure
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biogas, livestock manure, methane, organic matter
Kazakhstan has large reserves of natural resources, including coal, oil, and natural gas. We hope to replace fossil fuels with renewable sources of energy—particularly renewable natural gas. Thus, Kazakhstan, like other countries, should cut its dependency on coal, oil, and natural gas so as to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This study, given that Kazakhstan is an agricultural country with a large amount of organic matter, analyzes the potential of biogas production as a source of electricity and heat. Manure from livestock and poultry was chosen as a source of organic matter. The climate of Kazakhstan in most of its territory is sharply continental, with large temperature differences, which affect the process of anaerobic digestion. Consequently, the features of biogas production in cold regions were analyzed, and the calculation shows that the equivalent of 27,723,802 kWh of calorific energy could be obtained from the anaerobic digestion of livestock and poultry manure, whi...
