Carbon-Negative Hydrogen Production (HyBECCS) from Organic Waste Materials in Germany: How to Estimate Bioenergy and Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Potential
Johannes Full, Mathias Trauner, Robert Miehe, Alexander Sauer
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bioenergy potential, biohydrogen, HyBECCS, Hydrogen, waste-to-hydrogen
Hydrogen derived from biomass feedstock (biohydrogen) can play a significant role in Germany’s hydrogen economy. However, the bioenergy potential and environmental benefits of biohydrogen production are still largely unknown. Additionally, there are no uniform evaluation methods present for these emerging technologies. Therefore, this paper presents a methodological approach for the evaluation of bioenergy potentials and the attainable environmental impacts of these processes in terms of their carbon footprints. A procedure for determining bioenergy potentials is presented, which provides information on the amount of usable energy after conversion when applied. Therefore, it elaborates a four-step methodical conduct, dealing with available waste materials, uncertainties of early-stage processes, and calculation aspects. The bioenergy to be generated can result in carbon emission savings by substituting fossil energy carriers as well as in negative emissions by applying biohydrogen prod... [more]
Increasing the Performance of an Adsorption Chiller Operating in the Water Desalination Mode

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Adsorption, chiller, desalination
The intensive development of the world economy and the expected population growth mean that demand for cooling and water will continue to rise. The use of conventional technologies to meet this demand is associated with an enormous expenditure of electricity, which still comes mainly from non-renewable sources. With the increasing demand for energy, the increasing scarcity of drinking water, and the negative impact of humankind on the environment due to global warming and ozone depletion, intensive research has been carried out to find modern desalination technologies Most of the technologies use electricity for the process of desalination, and over 6% of the world’s electricity is generated from non-renewable sources, thus increasing the emissions of harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. One possibility to reduce emissions is the use of adsorption chillers with desalination function, which allow the production of cooling simultaneously with the process of water desalination. These s... [more]

Vilppu Eloranta, Aki Grönman, Aleksandra Woszczek
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy system optimization, life cycle emission, renewable energy retrofit
Due to the high energy consumption of buildings, there is a demand for both economically and environmentally effective designs for building energy system retrofits. While multi-objective optimization can be used to solve complicated problems, its use is not yet widespread in the industry. This study first aims to develop an efficient and applicable multi-objective building energy system optimization method, used to dimension energy production and storage retrofit components in a case campus building in Lahti, Finland. Energy consumption data of the building are obtained with a dynamic energy model. The optimization model includes economic and environmental objectives, and the approach is found to function satisfactorily. Second, this study aims to assess the feasibility and issues of multi-objective single-building energy system optimization via the analysis of the case optimization results. The results suggest that economically beneficial local energy production and storage retrofits... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy-economic analysis, selection of wind turbines, wind turbine
The aim of the current paper is to present an approach to a wind turbine selection based on an annual wind measurements. The proposed approach led to a choice of an optimal device for the given wind conditions. The research was conducted for two potential wind farm locations, situated on the north of Poland. The wind measurements pointed out a suitability of the considered localizations for a wind farm development. Six types of wind turbines were investigated in each localization. The power of the wind turbines were in the range of 2.0 to 2.5 MW and with a medium size of the rotor being in the range of 82 to 100 m. The purpose of the research was to indicate a wind turbine with the lowest sensitivity to the variation of wind speed and simultaneously being most effective energetically. The Weibull density distribution was used in the analyses for three values of a shape coefficients k. The energy efficiency of the considered turbines were also assessed. In terms of the hourly distributi... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: Batteries, electric vehicles, experimental characterisation, loop heat pipe, low pollutant fluid, thermal management
The present investigation aims to devise a thermal management system (TMS) for electric vehicles able to improve on limitations like charging time and all-electric range, together with the safety and environmental impact of the chosen thermal medium. A research gap is identified, as focus is often on addressing system thermal performance without considering that the thermal medium must not only provide suitable performances, but also must not add risks to both passengers and the environment. Thus, this work proposes an innovative cooling system including graphite sheets and a Loop Heat Pipe, filled with Novec™ 649 as working fluid, due to its exceptional environmental properties (GWP = 1 − ODP = 0) and safety features (non-flammable, non-toxic, dielectric). A three-cell module experimental demonstrator was built to compare temperatures when the proposed TMS is run with Novec™ 649 and ethanol. Results of testing over a bespoke fast charge driving cycle show that Novec™ 649 gave a faster... [more]

Keywords: DFT calculations, hydrogen storage, MgH2 thin films, size, strain, stress
Magnesium is an attractive hydrogen storage candidate due to its high gravimetric and volumetric storage capacities (7.6 wt.% and 110 gH2/l, respectively). Unfortunately, its use as a storage material for hydrogen is hampered by the high stability of its hydride, its high dissociation temperature of 573−673 K and its slow reaction kinetics. In order to overcome those drawbacks, an important advancement toward controlling the enthalpy and desorption temperatures of nano-structured MgH2 thin films via stress/strain and size effects is presented in this paper, as the effect of the nano-structuring of the bulk added to a biaxial strain on the hydrogen storage properties has not been previously investigated. Our results show that the formation heat and decomposition temperature correlate with the thin film’s thickness and strain/stress effects. The instability created by decreasing the thickness of MgH2 thin films combined with the stress/strain effects induce a significant enhancement in t... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: basalt fiber, Carbon Dioxide, complex assessment, eco-efficiency, environmental impact, life cycle assessment
Modern building materials must fulfill not only functional performance criteria but also reduce the environmental impact accompanied by their production. Within the past decades, fiber-reinforced materials have been found to be promising and durable materials that can be utilized in various fields. Among a wide range of reinforcement types, basalt fibers have been introduced as an alternative to broadly used steel fibers. As informed by the available literature, benefits linked with less energy-intensive production indicate a very good potential application of this material in terms of functional properties and, at the same time, a reduction in environmental burden. However, only a very limited amount of information is available on the actual impact of using basalt fibers in terms of environmental impact. In order to fill this gap, the present study describes, using Life Cycle Assessment, the environmental impacts associated with the production of basalt fibers. In order provide a more... [more]
Relationship among Economic Growth (GDP), Energy Consumption and Carbon Dioxide Emission: Evidence from V4 Countries
Janusz Myszczyszyn, Błażej Suproń
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, cointegration, economic growth, emissions, energy consumption, V4 countries
The main objective of the research was to determine the long-term and short-term correlation between CO2 emissions per capita, energy consumption per capita, and the level of economic growth of GDP per capita in the V4 countries. These countries, being EU members since 2004 and previously being in the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union, have introduced a number of economic reforms, but in the area of climate protection, including decarbonization, they struggle with many problems, as their economies are largely dependent on energy from non-renewable resources. The results of the research are varied, but the authors confirmed, especially in the case of Poland, the long-term correlations between the studied variables. In the short term, such interdependencies also occurred, especially between the level of energy consumption per capita and the level of CO2 emissions.

Keywords: decarbonisation, electrification, Energy Efficiency, energy systems modelling, paris agreement, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, scenario analysis, TIMES-Ukraine
This study analyses the Ukrainian energy system in the context of the Paris Agreement and the need for the world to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. Despite ~84% of greenhouse gas emissions in Ukraine being energy- and process-related, there is very limited academic literature analysing long-term development of the Ukrainian energy system. This study utilises the TIMES-Ukraine model of the whole Ukrainian energy system to address this knowledge gap and to analyse how the energy system may develop until 2050, taking into current and future policies. The results show the development of the Ukrainian energy system based on energy efficiency improvements, electrification and renewable energy. The share of renewables in electricity production is predicted to reach between 45% and 57% in 2050 in the main scenarios with moderate emission reduction ambitions and ~80% in the ambitious alternative scenarios. The cost-optimal solution includes reduction of space heating demand in buildings by 20%... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial immune system, commensalism, distributed generation installation, economic dispatch, evolutionary programming, multi-objective optimization, symbiotic organisms search
Economic Dispatch (ED) problems have been solved using single-objective optimization for so long, as Grid System Operators (GSOs) previously only focused on minimizing the total production cost. In modern power systems, GSOs require not only optimizing the total production cost but also, at the same time, optimizing other important objectives, such as the total emissions of the greenhouse gasses, total system loss and voltage stability. This requires a suitable multi-objective optimization approach in ensuring the ED solution produced is satisfying all the objectives. This paper presents a new multi-objective optimization technique termed Multi-Objective Immune-Commensal-Evolutionary Programming (MOICEP) for minimizing the total production cost and total system loss via integrated Economic Dispatch and Distributed Generation installation (ED-DG). This involved the application of a weighted-sum multi-objective approach that combined with an optimization technique called Immune-Commensal... [more]

Keywords: computer-aided design, parasitic dynamics, power electronics
Companies working on semiconductors must currently assure the customers of not only the performance of the semiconductor device per se, but also its performance when it is implemented in a real board, therefore including the role of parasitic effects. It is therefore very important to evaluate, especially during the design phase, not only the single device, but the complete board and their mutual interactions. This consideration opens a new area of investigation in the field of electronic systems engineering. In the current literature, the problem of a software evaluation of parasitic dynamics and electromagnetic effects on printed boards is addressed from the point of view of researchers. Moreover, it is fundamental to have a complete view of the various tools that could be usefully adopted from the perspective of manufacturers. This is the main motivation of this technical note, which performs a comparative analysis of the most prominent software tools for printed circuit boards’ (PC... [more]
DC Communities: Transformative Building Blocks of the Emerging Energy Infrastructure

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC community, DC microgrid, DC power system, distribution grid, energy infrastructure
Serious environmental concerns call for revolutionary solutions to cope with the harmful effects of the conventional energy landscape. Therefore, residential and commercial customers require cleaner and more reliable energy sources as they become more dependent on energy for daily and critical needs. In this case, transitioning to a cleaner energy economy is of paramount importance for both the environment and the utilities as well as the end-users. The desired transformation will require the deployment of massive amounts of clean energy sources. Many of these resources, such as solar photovoltaic (PV), provide electricity in the form of direct current (DC) that enables the return of DC grids to the electric power arena. The electric system has slowly transitioned to DC, mainly on the demand side. In recent years, modern electronic devices, lighting systems, and an increased number of appliances (≈22% of the residential and commercial loads) have adopted DC systems. Studies suggest tha... Keywords: high pore pressure, horizontal fractures, natural fractures, reverse faulting, shale condensate and oil, shale gas, strike-slip faulting stress state
We propose three idealized hydraulic fracture geometries (“fracture scenarios”) likely to occur in shale oil reservoirs characterized by high pore pressure and low differential in situ stresses. We integrate these geometries into a commercial reservoir simulator (CMG-IMEX) and examine their effect on reservoir fluids production. Our first, reference fracture scenario includes only vertical, planar hydraulic fractures. The second scenario has stimulated vertical natural fractures oriented perpendicularly to the vertical hydraulic fractures. The third fracture scenario has stimulated horizontal bedding planes intersecting the vertical hydraulic fractures. This last scenario may occur in mudrock plays characterized by high pore pressure and transitional strike-slip to reverse faulting stress regimes. We demonstrate that the vertical and planar fractures are an oversimplification of the hydraulic fracture geometry in anisotropic shale plays. They fail to represent the stimulated volume geo... March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: H2–O2 combustion reactions, hypersonic reactive flow, ignition delay time, kinetic scheme, sensitivity analysis, shock-induced detonation
A hybrid H2−air kinetic scheme of 11 species and 15 reactions is developed, which is capable of simulating the high-temperature air reaction flows and H2−O2 combustion flows respectively or simultaneously. Based on the Gupta scheme, the mole fraction varying with a Mach number at specific conditions is analyzed, and the weakly-ionized 7-species 7-reaction scheme is selected. The effect of nitrogenous species on the H2−O2 combustion is analyzed by a zero-dimensional simulation of steady-state and unsteady-state combustion under specified conditions, and the selected dominant nitrogenous reaction N + OH = NO + H is distinguished by the production rate of the nitrogenous species. The thermodynamic properties are verified by comparison using the NIST−JANAF database. The reaction rate coefficients of the dominant reaction of the hybrid kinetic scheme distinguished by a sensitivity analysis are corrected. The proposed kinetic scheme is validated by a zero-dimensional calculation of the ignit... [more]

Keywords: cascaded inverter, H-bridge, multilevel inverter, sinusoidal pulse-width modulation
This article presents a carrier-based pulse-width modulation (PWM) template for a 5-level, H bridge-based cascaded multilevel inverter (MLI). The developed control concept generates adequate modulation template for this inverter topology wherein a sinusoidal modulating waveform is modified to fit in a single triangular carrier signal range. With this modulation approach, classical multiplicity and synchronization of the triangular carrier signals criterion for the extension of sinusoidal pulse-width modulation, SPWM, to several cascaded 5-level, H-bridge-based MLI topology are removed. The proposed template can be used on the inverter configuration of any level with no further control modification. Nearly even distribution of switching pulses and equalized individual cascaded cell output power were achieved with the proposed modulation scheme. Three 5-level, H-bridge-based MLI units were cascaded for 1-phase, 13-level inverter operation; simulation and experimental results are adequate... [more]
Thermodynamics-Informed Neural Network (TINN) for Phase Equilibrium Calculations Considering Capillary Pressure
Tao Zhang, Shuyu Sun
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, flash calculation, phase equilibrium, TINN
The thermodynamic properties of fluid mixtures play a crucial role in designing physically meaningful models and robust algorithms for simulating multi-component multi-phase flow in subsurface, which is needed for many subsurface applications. In this context, the equation-of-state-based flash calculation used to predict the equilibrium properties of each phase for a given fluid mixture going through phase splitting is a crucial component, and often a bottleneck, of multi-phase flow simulations. In this paper, a capillarity-wise Thermodynamics-Informed Neural Network is developed for the first time to propose a fast, accurate and robust approach calculating phase equilibrium properties for unconventional reservoirs. The trained model performs well in both phase stability tests and phase splitting calculations in a large range of reservoir conditions, which enables further multi-component multi-phase flow simulations with a strong thermodynamic basis.

Keywords: Biomass, CHP, Exergy, retrofit, steam-explosion
This paper aims at assessing the impact of retrofitting an existing, 730 MWe, coal-fired power plant into a biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant on its energetic and exergetic performances. A comprehensive thermodynamic model of the power plant was developed and validated against field data, resulting in less than 1% deviation between the model and the measurements for the main process parameters. The validated model was then used to predict the behaviour of the biomass CHP after retrofitting. The modelled CHP unit is coupled to a steam-explosion biomass upgrading plant, a biorefinery process, and a high-temperature heat network. 13 scenarios were studied. At constant boiler load, delivering heat to the considered heat clients can increase the total energy efficiency of the plant from 44% (electricity only) to 64%, while the total exergy efficiency decreases from 39% to 35%. A total energy efficiency of 67% could be reached by lowering the network temperature from 120∘C to... [more]

Keywords: lighting engineering, Low Location Lighting system, photoluminescent lighting system
Photoluminescent strips forming a Low Location Lighting (LLL) system are the primary method for marking escape routes on passenger ships. The LLL system can be built as a self-luminous system (powered by electricity) or made as a series of strips made of photoluminescent materials, which glow and indicate the escape route after the loss of basic and emergency lighting. To ensure correct visual guidance, these strips must be installed at specific locations in the passageways and achieve appropriate photometric parameters after a certain time from their activation. The properties of the LLL system depend on the type of luminescent material used, the excitation source, and the exposure parameters. This paper presents the results of laboratory tests on two types of photoluminescent materials used for the construction of LLL systems. We recorded the change in luminance after the loss of excitation and measured the luminance values obtained 10 and 60 min after the loss of excitation under ex... [more]

Chalcopyrite Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells prepared via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are one of the candidates for highly advanced photovoltaic devices. This is because of their effectiveness and potential for reducing production costs through large-scale production. However, research on MOCVD-prepared solar cells is progressing slower than that on other types of solar cells, primarily because the preparation of CuInSe2 (CIS)-based films via MOCVD is relatively more sophisticated. In this study, we analyzed CIS solar cells prepared via three-stage MOCVD and processed with relatively simple precursors and techniques. We achieved an energy-conversion efficiency of 7.39% without applying a buffer layer. Instead, we applied a Cu-deficient layer to create a buried pn junction. Ultimately, we demonstrated that the fabrication of fully-MOCVD-processed CIS photovoltaic devices is feasible.

Gas injection is one of the prospective methods in the development of unconventional oil reserves. Before implementation in the field, it is necessary to justify the effectiveness of using gas agents in specific object conditions. Experiments of oil displacement on physical models with subsequent numerical modeling can provide the information necessary to justify the feasibility of using gas injection in specific reservoir conditions. This work is devoted to a series of experiments determining the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) on a slim tube model and the analysis of oil displacement dynamics for various gas compositions, as well as numerical modeling. Displacement experiments were carried out using a recombined oil sample from one of the fields in Western Siberia. The MMP was determined by the classical method of inflection point on the displacement efficiency versus injection pressure curve, which was 34.6 MPa for associated petroleum gas (APG) and 49.9 MPa for methane. Keywords: partial repowering, total repowering, wind energy, wind energy potential, wind energy projects, wind energy resources, wind market maturity assessment, wind speed
Decarbonizing the world economy, before the most damaging effects of climate change become irreversible, requires substantially increasing renewable energy generation in the near future. However, this may be challenging in mature wind energy markets, where many advantageous wind locations are already engaged by older wind farms, potentially generating suboptimal wind harvesting. This research developed a novel method to systematically analyze diverse factors to determine the level of maturity of wind markets and evaluate the adequacy of wind farm repowering at regional and individual levels. The approach was applied to wind markets in the United States (U.S.), in which several states were identified as having diverse levels of maturity. Results obtained from case studies in Texas indicated a consequential number of wind farms that have reached their twenty-year end-of-life term and earlier obsolescence levels. The proposed approach aided in determining wind farms that may benefit from... [more]
