Experimental Study of the Air Side Performance of Fin-and-Tube Heat Exchanger with Different Fin Material in Dehumidifying Conditions

Under dehumidifying conditions, the condensed water will directly affect the heat transfer and resistance characteristics of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger. The geometrical form of condensed water on fin surfaces of three different fin materials (i.e., copper fin, aluminum fin, and aluminum fin with hydrophilic layer) in a fin-and-circular-tube heat exchanger was experimentally studied in this paper. The effect of the three different fin materials on heat transfer and friction performance of the heat exchanger was researched, too. The results show that the condensation state on the surface of copper fin and aluminum fin are dropwise condensation. The condensation state on the surface of the aluminum fin with the hydrophilic layer is film condensation. This paper suggests that the efficiency of a system (decision-making unit) and its subsystem cannot be properly measured using a two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model either in cooperative or non-cooperative evaluation. Indeed, the existing methods subjectively determine the status of the subsystems in the whole system. The two-stage DEA models, either cooperative game or non-cooperative game, are used to analyze the environmental efficiency. Comparison of Long-Term Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage to Reference Power Generation Technologies Using CO2 Avoidance Cost in the U.S.

Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) can sequester atmospheric CO2, while producing electricity. The CO2 avoidance cost (CAC) is used to calculate the marginal cost of avoided CO2 emissions for BECCS as compared to other established energy technologies. A comparative analysis using four different reference-case power plants for CAC calculations is performed here to evaluate the CO2 avoidance cost of BECCS implementation. Results from this work demonstrate that BECCS can generate electricity at costs competitive with other neutral emissions technologies, while simultaneously removing CO2 from the atmosphere. Ice slurry is widely used in the field of ice storage air conditioning, district cooling, seafood preservation, and milk processing. Ice generation using supercooled water is efficient, and the system structure is compact. However, a secondary refrigerant cycle is usually used in order to control the wall temperature and to prevent the “ice blocking” problem. Optimum Multi-Mini-Channels Height for Heat Enhancement under Forced Convection Condition

Heat enhancement and heat removal remain important topics in engineering. Furthermore, flow in a laminar regime can reduce the cost of cooling. In the present study, flow in mini channels in a rectangular cavity is investigated with water as a circulating fluid. The height of the channel in the cavity is varied and interaction of the free flow above the channel with flow through the channel has been investigated. It is shown that a combination of these two flows can provide the optimum heat removal at a Reynolds number of 750. This finding is valid if one ignores the friction effect to the wall. The best configuration is for an aspect ratio AR = 6. If the pressure drop is taken into consideration, then the performance evaluation criterion shows that the mini-channel with aspect ratio AR = 12 is the best configuration. Energy Performance and Benchmarking for University Classrooms in Hot and Humid Climates

In this paper, the energy performance of a university campus in a tropical climate is assessed, and four mixed classroom buildings are compared using benchmarking methods based on simple normalization: the classic Energy Use Intensity (EUI), end-used based EUI, and people-based EUI. To estimate the energy consumption of the case studies, building energy simulations were carried out in EnergyPlus using custom inputs. The analysis found that buildings with more classroom spaces presented higher energy consumption for cooling and lighting than others. In comparison, buildings with a greater percentage of laboratories and offices exhibited higher energy consumption for plug loads. From Two- to Three-Dimensional Model of Heat Flow in Edge-Emitting Laser: Theory, Experiment and Numerical Tools

Mathematical modeling of thermal behavior of edge-emitting lasers requires the usage of sophisticated time-consuming numerical methods like FEM (Finite Element Method) or very complicated 3D analytical approaches. In this work, we present an approach, which is based on a relatively simple 2D analytical solution of heat conduction equation. Our method enables extremely fast calculation of two crucial physical quantities; namely, junction and mirror temperature. As an example subject of research, we chose self-made p-side-down mounted InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs laser. Purpose-designed axial heat source function was introduced to take into account various mirror heating mechanisms, namely, surface recombination, reabsorption of radiation, Joule, and bulk heating.
