Modification of Energy Parameters in Wood Pellets with the Use of Waste Cooking Oil

Biomass is one of the most important sources of renewable energy. It is expected that in the coming decades, biomass will play a major role in replacing fossil fuels. The most commonly used biofuels include wood pellet, which is a cost-effective, uniform and easy-to-use material. In view of the growing interest in this type of resource, novel methods are being investigated to improve the quality of pellet. This article presents the results of a laboratory study focusing on wood pellets refined with waste sunflower cooking oil applied by spraying. In this work, authors attempted to modify the energy parameters of wood pellets with the use of waste cooking oil. Addition of waste cooking oil, applied at the rates of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, 10% and 12% relative to the weight of pellets, increased the calorific value of the pellets without decreasing their durability. Optical Methods for Measuring Icing of Wind Turbine Blades

The development of wind-power engineering in the Arctic has led to increasing wind turbines in cold climatic zones. A problem operating wind turbines in cold conditions is the icing of blades. The icing of the blades leads to a change in rotor aerodynamics, a decrease in energy production, the additional weight of blades, and load on the rotor, which increase wear and reduce the lifetime of the turbines. The growth of icing on the blades threatens the uncontrollable separation of ice pieces from the blade edges, and the operation is unsafe. Non-contact methods for detecting icing on the blades need to prevent critical operating modes with ice formation on the blades. This review analyzes methods for detecting icing. The advantages and disadvantages of various optical methods are presented to give valuable insights on ice prevention for wind turbines operating in cold regions.

A Concept of Risk Prioritization in FMEA Analysis for Fluid Power Systems

FMEA analysis is a tool of quality improvement that has been widely used for decades. Its classical version prioritizes risk of failure by risk priority number (RPN). The RPN is a product of severity (S), occurrence (O), and detection (D), where all of the factors have equal levels of significance. This assumption is one of the most commonly criticized drawbacks, as it has given unreasonable results for real-world applications. A New Concept of Air Cooling and Heat Pipe for Electric Vehicles in Fast Discharging

This paper presents the concept of a hybrid thermal management system (TMS) including natural convection, heat pipe, and air cooling assisted heat pipe (ACAH) for electric vehicles. Experimental and numerical tests are described to predict the thermal behavior of a lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery cell in a fast discharging process (8C rate). Specifications of different cooling techniques are deliberated and compared. The mathematical models are solved by COMSOL Multiphysics® (Stockholm, Sweden), the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The simulation results are validated against experimental data with an acceptable error range. The results specify that the maximum cell temperatures for the cooling systems of natural convection, heat pipe, and ACAH reach 56, 46.3, and 38.3 °C, respectively. We found that the maximum cell temperature experiences a 17.3% and 31% reduction with the heat pipe and ACAH, respectively, compared with natural convection.

One solution for sewage sludge (SS) management is thermochemical treatment due to torrefaction and pyrolysis with biochar production. This study aimed to determine the process temperature’s influence on the qualitative PAHs emission from SS-biochar and the transformation of PAHs contained in SS. In Situ Deformation Analysis of a Fracture in Coal under Cyclic Loading and Unloading

The deformation analysis of fractures is vital for advantageous development of oil and gas fields, especially the coalbed methane (CBM) reservoir, since the change of fracture parameters can be directly evaluated through fracture deformation analysis. Then the flow capacity of CBM and the effect of various stimulation methods can be analyzed. In this study, X-ray CT image analysis is used to quantitatively characterize the deformation of a coal fracture in situ, and the evolution of fracture aperture under cyclic loading is presented. Furthermore, dimensionless permeability at different confining pressures by the Lattice Boltzmann method is simulated. The current results indicate that the fracture deformation changes significantly under cyclic loading. Investigation of a new type of fuel for the internal combustion engine, which can be successfully used in both the power generation and the automotive industries, is presented in this article. The proposed fuel is a blend of 75% n-butanol and 25% glycerol. The engine tests conducted with this glycerol−butanol blend were focused on the performance, combustion thermodynamics, and exhaust emissions of a spark-ignition engine. A comparative analysis was performed to find potential similarities and differences in the engine fueled with gasoline 95 and the proposed glycerol−butanol blend. As measured, CO exhaust emissions increased, NOx emissions decreased, and UHC emissions were unchanged for the glycerol−butanol blend when compared to the test with sole gasoline. Biochar as a Soil Amendment: Reduction in Mercury Transport from Hydraulic Mine Debris

The Influence of Power Network Disturbances on Short Delayed Estimation of Fundamental Frequency Based on IpDFT Method with GMSD Windows

This paper presents an application of the IpDFT spectrum interpolation method to estimate the fundamental frequency of a power waveform. Zero-crossing method (ZC) with signal prefiltering was used as a reference method. Test models of disturbances were applied, based on real disturbances recorded in power networks, including voltage harmonics and interharmonics, transient overvoltages, frequency spikes, dips and noise. It was determined that the IpDFT method is characterized by much better dynamic parameters with better estimation precision. In an example, in the presence of interharmonics, the frequency estimation error was three times larger for the reference method than that for the IpDFT method. Furthermore, during the occurrence of fast transient overvoltages, the IpDFT method reached its original accuracy about three times faster than the ZC method. Finally, using IpDFT, it was possible to identify the type of disturbances: impulsive, step changes of frequency or voltage dips.

This article presents the results of laboratory tests regarding the influence of high temperatures on changes in the strength and structural parameters of rocks that are present in the immediate vicinity of a gasification channel. Sandstone and claystone samples were heated at 300 °C, 600 °C, 900 °C and 1200 °C. Additionally, the heated samples were placed in water for 24 h. The results of the laboratory tests were used in the numerical simulation using RS2 software. The main goal of modeling was to determine the extent of the rock destruction zone around the gasification channel for dry and wet rock masses. In the numerical simulations, three widths of the gasification channel and three ranges of high-temperature impact were modeled. An innovative union of fuzzy controller and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller under the environment of fractional order (FO) calculus is described in the present study for an isolated hybrid power system (IHPS) in the context of load frequency control. The proposed controller is designated as FO-fuzzy PID (FO-F-PID) controller. The undertaken model of IHPS presented here involves different independent power-producing units, a wind energy-based generator, a diesel engine-based generator and a device for energy storage (such as a superconducting magnetic energy storage system). The selection of the system and controller gains was achieved through a unique quasi-oppositional harmony search (QOHS) algorithm.
