Effect of Divided Exhaust Period in a High Efficiency TGDI Engine
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dedicated hybrid engine (DHE), divided exhaust period (DEP), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), gasoline engine, high efficiency, turbocharged gasoline direct injection (TGDI).
The divided exhaust period (DEP) concept was applied to a high-efficiency gasoline engine and its impact on various engine performance aspects were investigated. To this end, key design parameters of DEP components were optimized through 1-D engine simulation. The designed DEP components were fabricated and experimental verification was performed through an engine dynamometer test. The developed DEP engine shows suitable performance for electrified vehicles, with a maximum thermal efficiency of 42.5% as well as a wide sweet spot area of efficiency over 40%. The improvement in thermal efficiency was mainly due to a reduction in pumping loss. Notably, the reduction in pumping loss was achieved under high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) flow conditions, where further improvements in fuel consumption could be achieved through a synergistic combination of DEP implementation and high dilution combustion. Furthermore, a significantly improved catalyst light-off time, uncharacteristic in turbo... [more]

An Improved Finite-Control-Set Model Predictive Current Control for IPMSM under Model Parameter Mismatches
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: parameter mismatch, permanent magnet synchronous motor, predictive current control.
The control performance of the finite control set model predictive current control (FCS-MPCC) for the interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) depends on the accuracy of the mathematical model. A novel robust model predictive current control method based on error compensation is proposed in order to reduce the parameter sensitivity and improve the current control robustness. In this method, the equivalent parameters are obtained from the known voltage and current information at the past time and the error between the predicted current and the actual current at the present time, which is utilized in the two-step prediction process to compensate the parameter mismatch error. Finally, the optimal voltage vector is selected by the cost function. The proposed method is compared with the traditional model predictive current control method through experiments. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Investigation on Mechanical Properties of a Carbon Paper Gas Diffusion Layer through a 3-D Nonlinear and Orthotropic Constitutive Model
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3-D constitutive model, gas diffusion layer, material stiffness matrix, mechanical properties, nonlinear and orthotropic characteristics, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell.
The mechanical loads that gas diffusion layers (GDLs) withstand in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks are sensitive to the assembly and working conditions. The mechanical properties of GDLs mostly depend on their composition materials, microstructural characteristics, operation conditions, etc. An accurate and comprehensive understanding of the mechanical performance of GDLs is significant for predicting the stress distribution and improving the assembly technology of PEMFC stacks. This study presented a novel 3-D nonlinear and orthotropic constitutive model of a carbon paper GDL to represent the material stiffness matrix with its compressive, tensile, and shear properties. Numerical simulations were performed based on the 3-D constitutive model, and the proposed 3-D model was validated against the experimental data reported previously. It is found that the simulation results of the 3-D constitutive model show a good agreement with the experimental results. Besides,... [more]

Analytical Solution of Problems about the Radiative and Radiative−Conductive Stationary Heat Transfer in a Medium with an Arbitrary Dependence of the Scattering and Absorption on Frequency Boundary Conditions
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diffusion of thermal radiation, radiative–conductive heat transfer.
We defined a method for the analytical solution of problems on stationary radiative and radiative−conductive heat transfer in a medium with an arbitrary frequency dependence of absorption and scattering near its boundary. We obtained formulas for the heat conductance of the remote surface and the thickness of the radiative−conductive relaxation of the medium. We determined characteristics of radiant heat transfer from the medium to free space such as the radiation spectrum, the radiation temperature and the medium outer boundary temperature. In addition, we solved the problem on the radiative−conductive heat transfer from one of two parallel surfaces to another with a medium between them.

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: influence relationship, learning efficiency, natural environment of different classroom-types, thermal comfort.
The physical environment of classrooms has a strong relationship with student learning performance and health. Since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2019, almost all universities have begun implementing closed instructional management, which has forced students to spend a much longer amount of time inside the classroom. This has also led to an increasing problem of thermal comfort in classroom indoor environments. In this paper, classrooms evolved from three dominant teaching modes at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University (ZSTU), located in the Hot Summer and Cold Winter (HSCW) zone of China, were selected as experimental spaces. Meanwhile, 12 learning groups with 60 students (30 of each sex) were selected as the tested samples. The relationship between thermal comfort and learning efficiency of the tested students was established through thermal comfort questionnaires and learning efficiency tests under the typical natural conditions in transition seasons. Based on this, improvement strategies wer... [more]

DC Fault Current Analyzing, Limiting, and Clearing in DC Microgrid Clusters
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cluster, DC microgrid, DC/DC converter, fault, fault current limiter (FCL).
A new DC fault current limiter (FCL)-based circuit breaker (CB) for DC microgrid (MG) clusters is proposed in this paper. The analytical expressions of the DC fault current of a bidirectional interlink DC/DC converter in the interconnection line of two nearby DC MGs are analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, a DC fault clearing solution (based on using a DC FCL in series with a DC circuit breaker) is proposed. This structure offers low complexity, cost, and power losses. To assess the performance of the proposed method, time-domain simulation studies are carried out on a test DC MG cluster in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. The results of the proposed analytical expressions are compared with simulation results. The obtained results verify the analytical expression of the fault current and prove the effectiveness of the proposed DC fault current limiting and clearing strategy.

Forecasting the CO2 Emissions at the Global Level: A Multilayer Artificial Neural Network Modelling
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: artificial neural network model, CO2 emission, forecasting, Simulation.
Better accuracy in short-term forecasting is required for intermediate planning for the national target to reduce CO2 emissions. High stake climate change conventions need accurate predictions of the future emission growth path of the participating countries to make informed decisions. The current study forecasts the CO2 emissions of the 17 key emitting countries. Unlike previous studies where linear statistical modeling is used to forecast the emissions, we develop a multilayer artificial neural network model to forecast the emissions. This model is a dynamic nonlinear model that helps to obtain optimal weights for the predictors with a high level of prediction accuracy. The model uses the gross domestic product (GDP), urban population ratio, and trade openness, as predictors for CO2 emissions. We observe an average of 96% prediction accuracy among the 17 countries which is much higher than the accuracy of the previous models. Using the optimal weights and available input data the for... Using the Modified Resistivity−Porosity Cross Plot Method to Identify Formation Fluid Types in Tight Sandstone with Variable Water Salinity
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: fluid identification, formation water salinity, low-resistivity oil pay, modified resistivity–porosity cross plot plates, Ordos Basin.
It is generally difficult to identify fluid types in low-porosity and low-permeability reservoirs, and the Chang 8 Member in the Ordos Basin is a typical example. In the Chang 8 Member of Yanchang Formation in the Zhenyuan area of Ordos Basin, affected by lithology and physical properties, the resistivity of the oil layer and water layer are close, which brings great difficulties to fluid type identification. In this paper, we first analyzed the geological and petrophysical characteristics of the study area, and found that high clay content is one of the reasons for the low-resistivity oil pay layer. Then, the formation water types and characteristics of formation water salinity were studied. The water type was mainly CaCl2, and formation water salinity had a great difference in the study area ranging from 7510 ppm to 72,590 ppm, which is the main cause of the low-resistivity oil pay layer. According to the reservoir fluid logging response characteristics, the water saturation boundary... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofuel reforming, coking stability, design, mechanism, nanocomposite active components, performance, structured catalysts.
This review considers problems related to design of efficient structured catalysts for natural gas and biofuels transformation into syngas. Their active components are comprised of fluorite, perovskite and spinel oxides or their nanocomposites (both bulk and supported on high surface area Mg-doped alumina or MgAl2O4) promoted by platinum group metals, nickel and their alloys. A complex of modern structural, spectroscopic and kinetic methods was applied to elucidate atomic-scale factors controlling their performance and stability to coking, such as dispersion of metals/alloys, strong metal-support interaction and oxygen mobility/reactivity as dependent upon their composition and synthesis procedures. Monolithic catalysts comprised of optimized active components loaded on structured substrates with a high thermal conductivity demonstrated high activity and stability to coking in processes of natural gas and biofuels reforming into syngas. Optimal Time-of-Use Electricity Price for a Microgrid System Considering Profit of Power Company and Demand Users
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy storage system, photovoltaic power, time-of-use electricity, wind power.
With high proportions of renewable energy generation in power systems, the power system dispatch with renewable energy generation has currently become a popular research direction. In our study, we propose a multi-objective dispatch model for a hybrid microgrid comprising a wind generator, photovoltaic (PV) generator, and an energy storage system to optimize the time-of-use (TOU) electricity price. The objective of the proposed multi-objective dispatch model is to maximize the profit of the power company and demand users, and minimize the proportion of users abandoning PV power and wind power. The elastic price of the load demand with a linear function is employed to optimize the TOU electricity price. Finally, we applied five test cases to validate the practicability of the multi-objective dispatch model.

Performance Enhancement of a Partially Shaded Photovoltaic Array by Optimal Reconfiguration and Current Injection Schemes
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: current injection, DC to DC converter, maximum power point tracking, partial shading, photovoltaic array, reconfiguration, series parallel.
The output of a photovoltaic array is reduced considerably when PV panels are shaded even partially. The impact of shading causes an appreciable loss in power delivery, since the PV panels are connected in series and parallel to contribute to the required voltage and power for the load. The prevailing research on mitigating the shading impact is mostly based on complex reconfiguration strategies where the PV panels are subjected to complex rewiring schemes. On the other hand, to disperse the shading many studies in the literature defend the physical rearrangement of the panels. The available intensive reconfiguration schemes, such as the series parallel (SP), bridge link (BL), honeycomb (HC), and total cross tied (TCT) schemes, try only to mitigate the shading impact and there is no scope for compensation; as a result, a loss of output power is inevitable. In the proposed research work, both the mitigation of and the compensation for the losses incurred due to shading are studied. In t... [more]

Integrated Sustainable Energy for Sub-Saharan Africa: A Case Study of Machinga Boma in Malawi
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy access, hybrid energy systems, Malawi Machinga Boma, sub-Saharan Africa.
Nearly 60% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa still live without access to electricity. Comparing the access rate of the countries in the region, Malawi ranks as one of the least electrified, with electricity available to only 14.6% of its population, as of 2018. This issue makes Malawi the case study of this research and poses the research question, “How can the low electricity access rate in Malawi be addressed?”. To address this research question, possible off grid, integrated, sustainable energy systems based on locally available energy resources—solar, wind, and diesel—are proposed. The multiyear and sensitivity analysis function of HOMER Pro microgrid simulation software is used to analyze the off grid performance of the proposed combinations of diesel generators, wind turbines, solar Photovoltaics, and battery storage, in providing power for an estimate of 400 households and nonresidential outlets in Machinga Boma, a community in the Southern region of Malawi. This paper demonstrates a smart energy management scheme for solar photovoltaic-biomass integrated grid-interactive microgrid cluster system. Three interconnected microgrids were chosen as a cluster of microgrids for validation of the proposed community energy management scheme. In this work, a Global System for Mobile (GSM)-based bidirectional communication technique was adopted for real-time coordination among the renewable energy sources and loads. To realize the common phenomenon of local grid outage in rural distribution networks, a practical case study is designed in this work. The optimized scheduling of the energy sources and loadsof different microgrids and the distribution grid were implemented to ensure zero loss of power supply probability (LPSP) for dynamic load profiles. The laboratory-scale prototype of the proposed microgrid clustering was first developed in this work by establishing real-time communication among multiple energy sources and loads through different energ... Decoupling Energy, Water, and Food Resources Production from GHG Emissions: A Footprint Perspective Review of Africa from 1990 to 2017
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: Africa, economic growth, energy, water, food resource, greenhouse gas, Tapio decoupling method.
Decoupling energy, water, and food (EWF) consumption and production from GHG emissions could be an important strategy for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 7 (Clean and Affordable Energy) in Africa. This study applies Tapio’s decoupling method to analyze the relationship between GHG emissions and EWF resources use in 15 African countries over the period 1990−2017. The results show a remarkable relationship, which includes the contamination of EWF by GHG emissions, that mostly exhibits unsatisfactory decoupling state to satisfactory decoupling over a period of several years. The decoupling of water and energy resources from GHG emissions in most countries of Africa has not been able to reach an excellent decoupling state or a strong positive decoupling state. This requires countries in Africa to support environmentally friendly water and energy infrastructures and to promote an integrated, m... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: feedforward control, Genetic Algorithm, Kalman filter, robust control, sliding mode control, variable-speed refrigeration system.
A sliding mode control (SMC) technique based on a state observer with a Kalman filter and feedforward controller was established for a variable-speed refrigeration system (VSRS) to ensure robust control against model uncertainties and disturbances, including noise. The SMC was designed using a state-space model transformed from a practical transfer function model, which was derived by conducting dynamic characteristic experiments. Fewer parameters affecting the model uncertainty were required to be identified, which facilitated modeling. The state observer for estimating the state variables was designed using a Kalman filter to ensure robustness against noise. A feedforward controller was added to the control system to compensate for the deterioration in the transient characteristics due to the saturation function used to avoid chattering. A genetic algorithm was used to alleviate the trial and error involved in determining the design parameters of the saturation function and select op... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: entropy generation analysis, Eulerian stochastic field method, FGM, flames D and E.
A second law analysis in combustion systems is performed along with an exergy loss study by quantifying the entropy generation sources using, for the first time, three different approaches: a classical-thermodynamics-based approach, a novel turbulence-based method and a look-up-table-based approach, respectively. The numerical computation is based on a hybrid filtered Eulerian stochastic field (ESF) method coupled with tabulated detailed chemistry according to a Famelet-Generated Manifold (FGM)-based combustion model. In this work, the capability of the three approaches to capture the effect of the Re number on local exergy losses is especially appraised. For this purpose, Sandia flames D and E are selected as application cases. First, the validation of the computed flow and scalar fields is achieved by comparison to available experimental data. For both flames, the flow field results for eight stochastic fields and the associated scalar fields show an excellent agreement. The ESF meth... [more]

The Effect of OPV Module Size on Stability and Diurnal Performance: Outdoor Tests and Application of a Computer Model
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: modelling of OPVs, OPV, organic photovoltaic, outdoor testing, stability.
The outdoor performance of large area Organic Photovoltaics (OPVs) is investigated in this work. Initially, the diurnal performance of the three modules is determined and found to be similar. Subsequently module degradation is monitored, and it is found that the larger area module displays a significantly greater stability as compared to the smallest area module; in fact the larger module displays a T50% (time to fall to 50% of its original value) of 191 days whilst the smallest module displays a T50% of 57 days. This is attributed to an increased level of water infiltration due to a larger perimeter-to-area ratio. These findings are then used to verify a computer simulation model which allows the model parameters, series and shunt resistances, to be calculated. It is determined that the series resistance is not an obvious obstruction at these module sizes. The findings of this work provide great promise for the application of OPV technology on a larger scale.

Subject: Materials
Microcombustion attracts interest with its promise of energy dense power generation for electronics. Yet, challenges remain to develop this technology further. Thermal management of heat losses is a known hurdle. Simultaneously, non-uniformities in heat release within the reaction regions also affect the device performance. Therefore a combination of thermal management strategies are necessary for further performance enhancements. Here, a bench top platinum nanoparticle based microcombustion reactor, coupled with thermoelectric generators is used. Methanol-air mixtures achieve room temperature ignition within a catalytic cartridge. In the current study, the reactor design is modified to incorporate two traditional thermal management strategies. By limiting enthalpic losses through the exhaust and reactor sides, using multi-pass preheating channels and heat recirculation, expected improvements are achieved.
