A Deep-Sea Pipeline Skin Effect Electric Heat Tracing System
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: distributed parameter circuit model, electric heat tracing, generalized predictive control, skin effect, temperature distribution model.
In order to ensure deep-water flowline safety, this paper combined the axial temperature distribution model of the submarine pipeline and the distributed parameter circuit model of the skin effect electric heat tracing system; such work is conducive to proving that the heating effect of the skin effect electric heat tracing system depends on the distributed circuit parameters and power frequency of the system. Due to the complexity of the power supply device, the frequency cannot be increased indefinitely. Therefore, for the case that the input of the skin electric heat tracing system is constrained, a generalized predictive control algorithm introducing the input softening factor is proposed, and the constrained generalized predictive control strategy is applied to the electric heating temperature control system of the submarine oil pipeline. Simulation results demonstrated that the control quantity of the skin effect electric heat tracing system is effectively controlled within a con... [more]

Wind Farm Layout Upgrade Optimization
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: commercial turbine selection, Genetic Algorithm, hub height variation, Optimization, upgrade, wind farm layout.
The problem of optimally increasing the size of existing wind farms has not been investigated in the literature. In this paper, a proposed wind farm layout upgrade by adding different (in type and/or hub height) commercial turbines to an existing farm is introduced and optimized. Three proposed upgraded layouts are considered: internal grid, external grid, and external unstructured. The manufacturer’s power curve and a general representation for thrust coefficient are used in power and wake calculations, respectively. A simple field-based model is implemented and both offshore and onshore conditions are considered. A genetic algorithm is used for the optimization. The trade-off range between energy production and cost of energy is investigated by considering three objective functions, individually: (1) annual energy production; (2) cost of added energy; and (3) cost of total energy. The proposed upgraded layouts are determined for the Horns Rev 1 offshore wind farm. The results showed... [more]

Increasing the Competitiveness of Tidal Systems by Means of the Improvement of Installation and Maintenance Maneuvers in First Generation Tidal Energy Converters—An Economic Argumentation
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic-financial viability, installation and maintenance maneuvers, life-cycle costs, ocean energy, offshore renewable energy, tidal energy converters.
The most important technological advances in tidal systems are currently taking place in first generation tidal energy converters (TECs), which are installed in areas in which the depth does not exceed 40 m. Some of these devices are fixed to the seabed and it is, therefore, necessary to have special high performance ships to transport them from the base port to the tidal farm and to subsequently recover the main units of these devices. These ships are very costly, thus making the installation costs very high and, in some cases, probably unfeasible. According to what has occurred to date, the costs of the installation and maintenance procedures depend, to a great extent, on the reliability and accessibility of the devices. One of the possible solutions as regards increasing system performance and decreasing the costs of the installation and maintenance procedures is the definition of automated maneuvers, which will consequently influence: (i) an increase in the competitiveness of these... Admittance Reshaping Control Methods to Mitigate the Interactions between Inverters and Grid
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: admittance reshaping, distributed generation, impedance coupling, inverter, weak grid.
With the increasing impedance coupling between inverters and grid caused by the phase-locked loop (PLL), traditional three-phase inverters suffer from the harmonic distortion or instability problems under weak grid conditions. Therefore, the admittance reshaping control methods are proposed to mitigate the interactions between inverters and grid. Firstly, a dynamics model of traditional inverter output admittance including main circuit and PLL is developed in the direct-quadrature (dq) frame. And the qq channel impedance of the inverter presents as a negative incremental resistance with the PLL effect. Secondly, two admittance reshaping control methods are proposed to improve the system damping. The first reshaping technique uses the feedforward point of common coupling (PCC) voltage to modify the inverter output admittance. The second reshaping technique adopts the active damping controller to reconstruct the PLL equivalent admittance. The proposed control methods not only increase th... [more]

Fuzzy Neural Network Control of Thermostatically Controlled Loads for Demand-Side Frequency Regulation
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: automatic generation control, back propagation algorithm, fuzzy neural network control, Particle Swarm Optimization, thermostatically controlled loads.
In this paper, a fuzzy neural network controller for regulating demand-side thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) is designed with the aim of stabilizing the frequency of the smart grid. Specifically, the balance between power supply and demand is achieved by tracking the automatic generation control (AGC) signal in an electric power system. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) and error back propagation (BP) algorithms are used to optimize the control parameters and consequently reduce the tracking errors. The fuzzy neural network can be applied to solve load control problems in power systems, since its self-learning and associative storage functions can deal with the highly nonlinear relationship between input and output. Simulation results show the advantage of the fuzzy neural network control scheme in terms of frequency regulation error and consumer comfort.

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automatic extraction, automation, building information modeling, interoperability, spatial information.
Despite the international trend of actively utilizing BIM in the field of energy simulation, it is difficult to actively utilize BIM in domestic certification-related practice. As a result, the work process is not integrated and the work efficiency is reduced, such as the occurrence of redundant tasks. In this paper, the integrated process based on the BIM geometry information automated extraction module was presented and its effectiveness was reviewed and verified through self-developed automation module and uniformity and error-causing analysis. The construction of an integrated process through automatic configuration information extraction has the advantages of reducing the workload, enabling additional tasks through module function expansion, sharing information through the web, and ease of service manufacture. In addition, an experiment comparing the data of automatic and manual calculations with three subjects confirmed that automatic calculation database through automation modul... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 3D printing, computational fluid dynamic (CFD), energy-saving, hydraulic manifold, internal passages, pressure loss.
With the compact circuit layout and small size, hydraulic manifolds sometimes cause high pressure loss. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the pressure loss under different circumstances with various geometry features and present solutions to reduce pressure loss. The pressure loss performance is evaluated by both experimental and numerical methods. Verified by the experiments, the numerical simulations are qualified to depict the correct trend of the pressure drop. After the basic analysis of traditional passages, three novel forms are proposed, which are very hard to be manufactured by a common method. Furthermore, the geometrical features are selected optimally by means of full factorial experiments to balance the pressure loss and space requirement. Moreover, taking advantage of 3D printing, it is possible to build the passages in novel forms which are beyond the capacity of conventional manufacturing. Results show that the pressure loss can be reduced considerably by adop... [more]

Long-Term Solar Photovoltaics Penetration in Single- and Two-Family Houses in Switzerland
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Agent-based modeling, Monte Carlo Simulation, Scenario analysis, Technology diffusion.
The Swiss energy strategy aims at increasing electricity generation from solar power by 2050, to fulfil Switzerland’s commitments in the Paris Agreement. However, the market of single- and two-family houses is characterized by low return rates for excess power injected to the grid, and the installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) is sensitive to financial incentives. We assess the drivers influencing the diffusion of rooftop solar PV systems until 2050, by employing an agent-based model. An agent is a single- or two-family house, and its decision to invest depends on the economic profitability of the investment, the agent’s income, environmental benefits (injunctive social norm), awareness and knowledge about the solar PV technology, and the impact of the social network (descriptive social norm). The model includes a synthetic population of agents, statistically equivalent to the true population. We also investigate the impact of different support policies, technology learning r... [more]

Real Levelized Cost of Energy with Indirect Costs and Market Value of Variable Renewables: A Study of the Korean Power Market
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: indirect costs, market value, real LCOE, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, social welfare.
A levelized cost of energy (LCOE) is a methodology for comparing power generation costs in the transition to renewable energy (RE). However, the major limitation of evaluating RE based on the LCOE is that it does not consider indirect costs, such as the environmental and curtailment effect. This paper proposes the real LCOE (rLCOE) approach that accounts for indirect and direct generation costs. The mathematical approach to estimating indirect costs is derived from economic theory. The indirect effects, which quantify all benefits generated due to RE, is related to the variability of the share RE in the energy generation mix. The rLCOE enhances the accuracy of the economic comparison of power generation costs and the derivation of the optimal quantities of RE because external effects are incorporated into the LCOE principles. This approach has taken into account electricity demand, fuel prices, and environmental costs for each energy source to adequately compare generation costs. Simul... [more]

A New Wind Power Accommodation Strategy for Combined Heat and Power System Based on Bi-Directional Conversion
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Bi-directional conversion, Combined electro-gas bidirectional conversion system (CEGBCS), Combined heat and power (CHP), power to gas (P2G), Wind power curtailments.
The extensive use of wind power can not only reduce dependence on fossil fuels, but also reduce emissions of polluted gases. However, large-scale wind power curtailments often occur in northeast China during the heat supply season, due to the fact that most of electrical demand is covered by the electrical power of the combined heat and power (CHP) during the off-peak hours. At present, for northeast China with heating demand, most of the research only focuses on how to accommodate more wind power on the spot by using one-directional conversion of the electric and thermal energy. But it is still difficult to realize the bi-directional conversion between the electro-gas or electro-thermal energy. In this paper, a combined electro-gas bi-directional conversion system (CEGBCS) is established by adding the power to gas (P2G), fuel cell and heat storage device in CHP system. This CEGBCS can not only realize bi-directional conversion of the electricity and gas, but also decouple the two oper... [more]

Small Wind Turbine Emulator Based on Lambda-Cp Curves Obtained under Real Operating Conditions
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: renewable energies, wind turbine emulator, wind turbine energy systems.
This paper proposes a new on-site technique for the experimental characterization of small wind systems by emulating the behavior of a wind tunnel facility. Due to the high cost and complexity of these facilities, many manufacturers of small wind systems do not have a well knowledge of the characteristic λ - C p curve of their turbines. Therefore, power electronics converters connected to the wind generator are usually programmed with speed/power control curves that do not optimize the power generation. The characteristic λ - C p curves obtained through the proposed method will help manufacturers to obtain optimized speed/power control curves. In addition, a low cost small wind emulator has been designed. Programmed with the experimental λ - C p curve, it can validate, improve, and develop new control algorithms to maximize the energy generation. The emulator is completed with a new graphic user interface that monitors in real time both the val... [more]

The Use of CFD for the Design and Development of Innovative Configurations in Regenerative Glass Production Furnaces
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, glass production plants, NOx reduction, thermal regenerator.
The limitation of nitrogen oxides emissions is nowadays a challenge in several engineering fields. Recent European regulations have reduced the maximum NOx emissions and therefore forced the glass production sector to develop emission reduction strategies. Two different systems have been developed within the framework of the European LIFE project and are currently applied to glass regenerative furnaces: the Waste Gas Recirculation (WGR) and the Hybrid Air Staging (HyAS). The above systems are primary NOx reduction strategies because they both operate to control the combustion evolution. Both WGR and HyAS systems have been conceived with the extensive use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models: design strategies for both systems have been developed based on the use of CFD and are currently under use by glass furnace designers. In the present work, the CFD procedures routinely used for the design of the above systems are described. The systems effectiveness, due to the harsh condit... [more]

Comparison among Three Groups of Solar Thermal Power Stations by Data Envelopment Analysis
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: congestion, data envelopment analysis, electricity, solar thermal power.
To change an increasing trend of energy consumption, many counties have turned to solar thermal energy as a solution. Without greenhouse gas emissions, solar thermal power stations may play a vital role in the energy industry because they have a potential to produce electricity for 24 h per day. The goal of this study is to select solar thermal power stations from three regions (i.e., the United States, Spain and the other nations) throughout the world and to identify which region most efficiently produces solar thermal power energy. To measure their efficiencies, we use data envelopment analysis as a method to examine the performance of these power stations. Our empirical results show that the United States currently fields the most efficient solar thermal power stations. This study also finds that parabolic trough technology slightly outperforms the other two technologies (i.e., heliostat power tower and linear Fresnel reflector), but not at the level of statistical significance. Study on the Mechanism of Ionic Stabilizers on Shale Gas Reservoir Mechanics in Northwestern Hunan
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole stability, ionic stabilizer, Niutitang formation, shale drilling fluid, shale gas reservoir.
The shale of the lower Cambrian Niutitang formation in northwestern Hunan is an ideal reservoir for shale gas. There is a close connection between borehole stability and drilling fluid in shale gas drilling. Ionic stabilizer is a new type of stratum consolidation agent that inhibits the hydration expansion of clay minerals and improves mechanical strength of the borehole. The traditional idea of pore wall protection is to use drilling fluid additives to prevent shale from interacting with water. However, ionic stabilizer can change the hydrophilic of clay minerals in shale, making the particles become hydrophobic and dense, therefore, the formation stability can be enhanced simultaneously. The material used in this paper is different from the normal ionic stabilizer, some chemical bonds that have been changed in the new material called enhanced normality ionic (ENI) stabilizer. This paper utilized the shale samples those obtained from Niutitang formation to study the connection between... [more]

On the Determination of the Aerodynamic Damping of Wind Turbines Using the Forced Oscillations Method in Wind Tunnel Experiments
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamic damping, aeroelasticity, forced oscillations method, wind tunnel tests, wind turbines.
The development of wind turbine technology has led to higher and larger wind turbines with a higher sensitivity to dynamic effects. One of these effects is the aerodynamic damping, which introduces favorable damping forces in oscillating wind turbines. These forces play an important role in the turbine lifetime, but have not yet been studied systematically in detail. Consequently, this paper studies the plausibility of determining the aerodynamic damping of wind turbines systematically through wind tunnel experiments using the forced oscillation method. To this end, a 1:150 scale model of a prototype wind turbine has been fabricated considering Reynolds number effects on the blades through XFOIL calculations and wind tunnel measurements of airfoil 2D-section models. The resulting tower and wind turbine models have been tested for different operation states. The tower results are approximate and show low aerodynamic damping forces that can be neglected on the safe side. The measured aer... [more]

Analysis of Building Electricity Use Pattern Using K-Means Clustering Algorithm by Determination of Better Initial Centroids and Number of Clusters
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clustering, electricity consumption pattern analysis, energy conservation, K-means.
Energy demands in the building sector account for more than 30% of the total energy use and more than 55% of the global electricity demand. Efforts to develop sustainable buildings are progressing but are still not keeping pace with the growing building sector and the rising demand for energy. Analyzing the energy use pattern of buildings and planning for energy conservation in existing buildings are essential. In this research, we propose a method to analyze the energy use pattern in a building using the K-means clustering method. Initial centroids in K-means clustering are chosen randomly so that the clustering result changes every time. This instability is removed in the proposed method by the selection of initial centroids using a percentile method based on empirical cumulative distribution. The results from the proposed method have better accuracy, and the internal cohesion and separation between clusters are better than the random initialization method. Analyzing yearly electrici... Tip-Bed Velocity and Scour Depth of Horizontal-Axis Tidal Turbine with Consideration of Tip Clearance
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: marine renewable energy, tidal power, tidal turbine-induced scour, turbine wake.
The scouring by a tidal turbine is investigated by using a joint theoretical and experimental approach in this work. The existence of a turbine obstructs a tidal flow to divert the flow passing through the narrow channel in between the blades and seabed. Flow suppression is the main cause behind inducing tidal turbine scouring, and its accelerated velocity is being termed as tip-bed velocity (Vtb). A theoretical equation is currently proposed to predict the tip-bed velocity based on the axial momentum theory and the conservation of mass. The proposed tip-bed velocity equation is a function of four variables of rotor radius (r), tip-bed clearance (C), efflux velocity (V0) and free flow velocity (V∞), and a constant of mass flow coefficient (Cm) of 0.25. An experimental apparatus was built to conduct the scour experiments. The results provide a better understanding of the scour mechanism of the horizontal axis tidal turbine-induced scour. Keywords: building simulation, energy performance forecasting, model calibration, reduced models, smart grids.
The present paper introduces an iterative methodology to progressively reduce building simulation model complexity with the aim of identifying potential trade-offs between computational requirements (i.e., model complexity) and energy estimation accuracy. Different levels of model complexity are analysed, from commercial building energy simulation tools to low order calibrated thermal networks models. Experimental data from a residential building in Germany were collected and used to validate two detailed white-box models and a simplified white-box model. The validation process was performed in terms of internal temperature profiles and building thermal energy demand predictions. Synthetic profiles were generated from the validated models and used for calibrating high order models. A reduction (trimming) procedure was applied to reduce the model complexity using an energy performance criterion prior to model trimming. Keywords: Alternative Fuels, CI engines, combustion duration, heat release rate, in-cylinder combustion.
Sustainable liquid fuels will be needed for decades to fulfil the world’s growing energy demands. Combustion systems must be able to operate with a variety of renewable and sustainable fuels. This study focused on how the use of various alternative fuels affects combustion, especially in-cylinder combustion. The study investigated light fuel oil (LFO) and six alternative liquid fuels in a high-speed, compression-ignition (CI) engine to understand their combustion properties. The fuels were LFO (baseline), marine gas oil (MGO), kerosene, rapeseed methyl ester (RME), renewable diesel (HVO), renewable wood-based naphtha and its blend with LFO. The heat release rate (HRR), mass fraction burned (MFB) and combustion duration (CD) were determined at an intermediate speed at three loads. The combustion parameters seemed to be very similar with all studied fuels. The HRR curve was slightly delayed with RME at the highest load. Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deep learning, short-term load forecasting, stacked denoising auto-encoder neural network.
Accurate short-term electric load forecasting is significant for the smart grid. It can reduce electric power consumption and ensure the balance between power supply and demand. In this paper, the Stacked Denoising Auto-Encoder (SDAE) is adopted for short-term load forecasting using four factors: historical loads, somatosensory temperature, relative humidity, and daily average loads. The daily average loads act as the baseline in final forecasting tasks. Firstly, the Denoising Auto-Encoder (DAE) is pre-trained. In the symmetric DAE, there are three layers: the input layer, the hidden layer, and the output layer where the hidden layer is the symmetric axis. The input layer and the hidden layer construct the encoding part while the hidden layer and the output layer construct the decoding part. After that, all DAEs are stacked together for fine-tuning. In addition, in the encoding part of each DAE, the weight values and hidden layer values are combined with the original input layer values... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: LCLC resonant converter, optimal design method, PSO algorithm, space travelling-wave tube Amplifiers, total power loss.
Due to the advantages of zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) and zero-current-switching (ZCS), LCLC resonant converters are universally applied in two-stage electronic power conditioners (EPCs) of space travelling-wave tube amplifiers (TWTAs). In two-stage EPCs, as the output voltage is regulated by the first stage, the main functions of LCLC resonant converters are to boost the input voltage, provide galvanic isolation, and maintain high efficiency. However, the total power loss of an LCLC resonant converter is very challenging because of the multiple resonant components and their mutual couplings. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, a PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization)-algorithm-based, efficiency-oriented optimal design method of an LCLC resonant converter is proposed. Electric Vehicle into the Grid: Charging Methodologies Aimed at Providing Ancillary Services Considering Battery Degradation
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery degradation, charging strategies, electric vehicle, grid impact, optimisation methodologies, transport electrification.
The necessity of transport electrification is already undeniable due to, among other facts, global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and fossil-fuel dependency. In this context, electric vehicles (EVs) play a fundamental role. Such vehicles are usually seen by the network as simple loads whose needs have to be supplied. However, they can contribute to the correct operation of the network or a microgrid and the provision of ancillary services and delay the need to reinforce the power lines. These concepts are referred to as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), Vehicle-to-Building (V2B) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H). In paper, a deep classification and analysis of published charging strategies is provided. In addition, optimal charging strategies must minimise the degradation of the batteries to increase their lifetime, since it is considered that the life of a battery ends when its capacity is reduced by 20% with respect to its nominal capacity. Therefore, an optimal integration of EVs must consider both gr... [more]

Keywords: chemical kinetics mechanism, digital analysis of reactive systems (DARS), ignition delay time, laminar flame speed, reaction sensitivity analysis, Syngas.
This study investigated the effects of H2 and CH4 concentrations on the ignition delay time and laminar flame speed during the combustion of CH4/H2 and multicomponent syngas mixtures using a novel constructed reduced syngas chemical kinetics mechanism. The results were compared with experiments and GRI Mech 3.0 mechanism. It was found that mixture reactivity decreases and increases when higher concentrations of CH4 and H2 were used, respectively. With higher H2 concentration in the mixture, the formation of OH is faster, leading to higher laminar flame speed and shorter ignition delay time. CH4 and H2 concentrations were calculated at different pressures and equivalence ratios, showing that at high pressures CH4 is consumed slower, and, at different equivalence ratios CH4 reacts at different temperatures.
