Design and Experiment of a Power Sharing Control Circuit for Parallel Fuel Cell Modules
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC/DC converter, Energy Conversion, Fuel Cells, parallel architectures, power distribution.
In this paper, a novel control circuit that can connect fuel cell (FC) modules in parallel is proposed, which is particularly useful when the employed FCs have different electrical characteristics. Conventional methods (e.g., DC/DC converters) are not applicable in such situations because they cannot regulate the power output of each source in a parallel-connected topology. Consequently, the uniformity requirement of FCs increases and becomes costly. In contrast to existing methods, the proposed method adopts a novel power-feedback method to control the power output of each FC module under both rated conditions and load changes, which in turn determines the operating point of each FC module. Therefore, the uniformity requirement can be relaxed. For proof of concept, the experiments employed two FC-like sources with different I−V characteristics. The experimental results indicated that the power assignment under the rated condition had a relative error of < 6.62%. The distribution ra... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: burst-mode switching, high-frequency transformer configurations, intermittent switching, phase-shift modulation, three-phase bidirectional isolated DC-DC converter, three-phase dual-active bridge.
This paper presents the performance of a three-phase bidirectional isolated DC-DC converter (3P-BIDC) in wye-wye (Yy), wye-delta (Yd), delta-wye (Dy), and delta-delta (Dd) transformer configurations, using enhanced switching strategy that combines phase-shift modulation and burst-mode switching. A simulation verification using PSCAD is carried out to study the feasibility and compare the efficiency performance of the 3P-BIDC with each transformer configuration, using intermittent switching, which combines the conventional phase-shift modulation (PSM) and burst-mode switching, in the light load condition. The model is tested with continuous switching that employs the conventional PSM from medium to high loads (greater than 0.3 p.u.) and with intermittent switching at light load (less than 0.3 p.u), in different transformer configurations. In all tests, the DC-link voltages are equal to the transformer turns ratio of 1:1. This paper also presents the power loss estimation in continuous a... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: drug delivery, endoscopy, implantable devices, magnetic resonance, Medical devices, nerve stimulation, pacemaker, wireless charging, wireless power transfer.
With ever-increasing concerns on health and environmental safety, there is a fast-growing interest in new technologies for medical devices and applications. Particularly, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology provides reliable and convenient power charging for implant medical devices without additional surgery. For those WPT medical systems, the width of the human body restricts the charging distance, while the specific absorption rate (SAR) standard limits the intensity of the electromagnetic field. In order to develop a high-efficient charging strategy for medical implants, the key factors of transmission distance, coil structure, resonant frequency, etc. are paid special attention. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of near-field WPT technologies in medical devices is presented and discussed. Also, future development is discussed for the prediction of different devices when embedded in various locations of the human body. Moreover, the key issues including power transfer eff... [more]

Axial-Flux Permanent-Magnet Dual-Rotor Generator for a Counter-Rotating Wind Turbine
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: axial-flux machine, dual-rotor machine, wind turbine.
Coaxial counter-rotating propellers have been widely applied in ships and helicopters for improving the propulsion efficiency and offsetting system reactive torques. Lately, the counter-rotating concept has been introduced into the wind turbine design. Distributed wind power generation systems often require a novel approach in generator design. In this paper, prototype development of axial-flux generator with a counter-rotating field and armature is presented. The design process was composed of three main steps: analytical calculation, FEM simulation and prototype experimental measurements. The key aspect in the prototype development was the mechanical construction of two rotating components of the generator. Sturdy construction was achieved using two points of contact between both rotors via the placement of the bearing between the inner and outer rotor. The experimental analysis of the prototype generator has been conducted in the laboratory at the dynamometer test stand equipped wit... [more]

Development of Optimal Conditioning Method to Improve Economic Efficiency of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cells
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: conditioning method optimization, constant current mode, constant voltage mode, economic analysis, online conditioning, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell.
This study presents an economical conditioning method for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells through a parametric study investigating the factors affecting online conditioning methods. First, we compared the operating conditions between constant current (CC) mode and constant voltage (CV) mode conditioning to understand the effects of current and potential differences on conditioning. We found that CV mode conditioning is at least one hour faster at the same load. This is because unlike CV mode conditioning, which has a constant load over the entire range of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), CC mode conditioning features current flow through the existing passage of the pre-activated triple phase boundary of the MEA so that the electronic load is not entirely used in the conditioning process. Second, the optimization of CV mode conditioning was conducted by controlling the conditioning temperature. Lastly, the economics of the proposed method were analyzed by comparing i... [more]

Optimising a Microgrid System by Deep Reinforcement Learning Techniques
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: Machine Learning, microgrids, optimisation methods, power systems, reinforcement learning.
The deployment of microgrids could be fostered by control systems that do not require very complex modelling, calibration, prediction and/or optimisation processes. This paper explores the application of Reinforcement Learning (RL) techniques for the operation of a microgrid. The implemented Deep Q-Network (DQN) can learn an optimal policy for the operation of the elements of an isolated microgrid, based on the interaction agent-environment when particular operation actions are taken in the microgrid components. In order to facilitate the scaling-up of this solution, the algorithm relies exclusively on historical data from past events, and therefore it does not require forecasts of the demand or the renewable generation. The objective is to minimise the cost of operating the microgrid, including the penalty of non-served power. This paper analyses the effect of considering different definitions for the state of the system by expanding the set of variables that define it. The obtained r... [more]

Industrial Ceramic Blocks for Buildings: Clay Characterization and Drying Experimental Study
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ceramic blocks, clay, dimensional variation, heat, mass.
The conformation of a ceramic piece follows the steps of preparing the raw material, molding, lamination, drying, and firing. Drying is a thermodynamic process of heat and mass transfer, with dimensional variations of the product that requires a large amount of energy. Ceramic materials when exposed to non-uniform drying may suffer cracks and deformations, reducing their post-drying quality. Thus, this work aimed to study the drying of industrial ceramic blocks in an oven with forced air circulation. Experiments were carried out to characterize the clay and drying of the ceramic block at temperatures ranging from 50 °C to 100 °C. Results of the chemical, mineralogical, granulometric, differential thermal, and thermogravimetric analysis of the clay, and heating kinetics, mass loss, and dimensional variation of the industrial ceramic block are presented and analyzed in detail. It was found that the clay is basically composed of silica and alumina (≈ 80.96%), with an average particle diam... [more]

Formation and Continuation of Thermal Energy Community Systems: An Explorative Agent-Based Model for the Netherlands
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: agent-based modelling and simulation, critical factors, energy community, formation and continuation, thermal energy systems.
Energy communities are key elements in the energy transition at the local level as they aim to generate and distribute energy based on renewable energy technologies locally. The literature on community energy systems is dominated by the study of electricity systems. Yet, thermal energy applications cover 75% of the total energy consumption in households and small businesses. Community-driven initiatives for local generation and distribution of thermal energy, however, remain largely unaddressed in the literature. Since thermal energy communities are relatively new in the energy transition discussions, it is important to have a better understanding of thermal energy community systems and how these systems function. The starting point of this understanding is to study factors that influence the formation and continuation of thermal energy communities. To work towards this aim, an abstract agent-based model has been developed that explores four seemingly trivial factors, namely: neighborh... [more]

Urban Design with the Wind: Pedestrian-Level Wind Field in the Street Canyons Downstream of Parallel High-Rise Buildings
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: high-rise building, pedestrian-level wind, street canyon, urban design, wind tunnel.
We are investigating how to use urban design approaches to conduct the layout and basic design of newly-built high-rise buildings to reduce wind obstruction and create effective urban ventilation. Few studies have addressed this issue. This study analyzes the effects of high-rise building on pedestrian-level wind in downstream street canyons based on wind tunnel test results, and examines the suitability of an urban design specification. The height (H) of high-rise buildings and the airflow passage width (S) between adjacent high-rise buildings are key control factors for this issue; H/D = 3 and S/D = 1.125 are critical parameters and recommended values (D is the height of the downstream street blocks).

The Effect of Inclination Angle and Reynolds Number on the Performance of a Direct Contact Membrane Distillation (DCMD) Process
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: direct contact membrane distillation, heat and mass transfer, membrane inclination angle, Reynolds number.
In this numerical study, a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) system has been modeled considering various angles for the membrane unit and the Reynolds number range of 500 to 2000. A two-dimensional model developed based on the Navier−Stokes, energy, and species transport equations were used. The governing equations were solved using the finite volume method (FVM). The results showed that with an increase in the Reynolds number of up to 1500, the heat transfer coefficient for all membrane angles increases, except for the inclination angle of 60°. Also, an increase in the membrane angle up to 90° causes the exit influence to diminish and the heat transfer to be augmented. Such findings revealed that the membrane inclination angle of 90° (referred to as the vertical membrane) with Reynolds number 2000 could potentially have the lowest temperature difference. Likewise, within the Reynolds numbers of 1000 and 2000, by changing the inclination angle of the membrane, temperature dif... [more]

Valuation of Decision Flexibility and Strategic Value in Coal Gasification Projects with the Option-To-Switch between Different Outputs
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: binomial lattice, coal gasification, compound options, option-to-switch, real options analysis, strategic value.
Coal gasification has been promoted as a sophisticated clean energy technology alternative to coal burning these days. Aside from the usual technical difficulties, economic issues of such projects—especially valuation challenges—are important problems that practitioners usually struggle with. This is because of the major extent of managerial flexibility linked with specific characteristics of coal gasification projects, in particular, possibilities to mothball/restart manufacturing lines, or change between different outputs. The value of such flexibilities may be well assessed by real options valuations. The aim of this paper is to show that for the coal gasification technologies the real options valuation is more suitable than traditional discounted cash flow technique. This approach was applied to calculate an integrated plant that can produce either electricity or methanol. As the valuation approach the multiplicative stochastic process was used. As a consequence, binomial lattices... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, castor oil, diesel engine, emission, waste plastic oil.
This study examined the use of waste plastic oil (WPO) combined with biodiesel as an alternative fuel for diesel engines, also commonly known as compression ignition engines, and focused on comparison of the basic physical and chemical properties of fuels, engine performance, combustion characteristics, and exhaust emissions. A preliminary study was conducted to determine the suitable ratio for the fuel blends in consideration of fuel lubricity and viscosity, and these results indicated that 10% biodiesel—derived from either palm oil or castor oil—in waste plastic oil was optimal. In addition, characterization of the basic properties of these fuel blends revealed that they had higher density and specific gravity and a lower flash point than diesel fuel, while the fuel heating value, viscosity, and cetane index were similar. The fuel blends, comprised of waste plastic oil with either 10% palm oil biodiesel (WPOP10) or 10% castor oil biodiesel (WPOC10), were selected for further investig... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, numerical simulation, proppant transport.
This paper focuses on the study of proppant transport mechanisms in fractures during frac-packing operation. A multi-module, numerical proppant, reservoir and geomechanics simulator has been developed, which improves the current numerical modeling techniques for proppant transport. The modules are linked together and tailored to capture the processes and mechanisms that are significant in frac-pack operations. The proposed approach takes advantage of a robust and sophisticated numerical smeared fracture simulator and incorporates an in-house proppant transport module to calculate propped fracture dimensions and concentration distribution. In the development of software capability, the propped fracture geometry and proppant concentration, which are the output of the proppant module, are imported to the hydraulic fracture simulator through mobility modification. Complex issues of proppant transport in fractures that are addressed in the literature and captured by the current model are: h... [more]

Potential Effects of Vacuum Insulating Glazing Application for Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emission (GHGE) from Apartment Buildings in the Korean Capital Region
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: apartment buildings, greenhouse gas emissions, insulating glazing (IG), vacuum insulating glazing (VIG).
Korea has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHGEs) to levels 37% below the “business as usual (BAU)” level by 2030, and the building sector, in particular, aims to reduce GHGEs by 45,000,000-ton CO2-eq by 2020. In order to reach this goal, it is crucial to reduce GHGEs that result from energy consumption in apartment buildings, which account for approximately 65% of all buildings in the capital region where the population is concentrated. Moreover, as apartment buildings not only have high window-to wall area ratios, but also use insulating glazing (IG) with low thermal performance, an advanced window system with low heat transmittance (U-value), such as a concrete structure, is necessary for effective GHGE reduction. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the GHGE reduction effects from replacing existing IG vacuum insulating glazing (VIG) with low U-values in the apartment housing located in the capital region. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD modelling, church heating, energetic rehabilitation, indoor climate.
Background: The aim of our study was to identify an optimal heating system for the analyzed church. We also evaluated the energy consumption of the existing system and of those proposed in order to choose the best heating system. Methods: We analyzed the current existing heating system, a mixed system (static heaters and hot air heating) in a Romanian heritage church, build in the 16th century, and we compared it with an underfloor heating system that has been mentioned in the literature as an alternative for church heating. We used a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the indoor climate with two turbulence models (k-ε and k-ω). Results: Comparing the two heating systems through boxplot graphs, we could highlight pertinent conclusions regarding the temperatures and velocities of the measured air currents. Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Cheese Whey and Industrial Hemp Residues Opens New Perspectives for the Valorization of Agri-Food Waste
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, bioenergy perspectives, cheese whey, industrial hemp, methane, residual feedstock, techno-economic assessment.
Cheese whey (CW) and hemp hurds (HH) represent typically overabundant biowastes of food and agricultural production, and their circular management is crucial to improve both sustainability and profitability of the agri-food chain. By combining experimental biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests and literature data, the techno-economic aspects of a possible future bioenergy valorization of CW and HH through anaerobic digestion (AD) and co- digestion (coAD) were analyzed. Along the 42-days, BMP assays, CW, and HH alone rendered BMP values of 446 ± 66 and 242 ± 13 mL CH4·g VS−1, respectively. The application of coAD with CW and HH at a 70:30 ratio allowed to enhance the biomethane production by 10.7%, as compared to the corresponding calculated value. In terms of economic profitability, the valorization of HH as biomethane in a dual-purpose hemp cultivation could potentially enable net profits of up to 3929 €·ha−1, which could rise to 6124 €·ha−1 in case of coAD with CW. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacity market, de-rating factors, degradation cost, physics-based modelling.
Capacity markets (CM) are energy markets created to ensure energy supply security. Energy storage devices provide services in the CMs. Li-ion batteries are a popular type of energy storage device used in CMs. The battery lifetime is a key factor in determining the economic viability of Li-ion batteries, and current approaches for estimating this are limited. This paper explores the potential of a lithium-ion battery to provide CM services with four de-rating factors (0.5 h, 1 h, 2 h, and 4 h). During the CM contract, the battery experiences both calendar and cycle degradation, which reduces the overall profit. Physics-based battery and degradation models are used to quantify the degradation costs for batteries in the CM to enhance the previous research results. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grass, Hydrogen, hyperthermophilic treatment, leaves, methane.
In this study, the feasibility of hydrogen and methane production from grass and leaves via hyperthermophilic anaerobic digestion was investigated. The hyperthermophilic treatment of grass at 70 °C resulted in the highest concentrations of volatile fatty acids (TVFA) and reducing sugars in the supernatant of over 21 and 6.5 g/L reported on day 3 and 4 of the experiment. In contrast, hydrolysis and acidification of leaves performed slower and with lower efficiency, as the peak concentrations of TVFA and reducing sugars were observed at the end of the process. However, the highest cumulative hydrogen and methane yields of 69.64 mLH2/gVS and 38.63 mLCH4/gVS were reported for leaves digested at 70 °C, whereas the corresponding maximum productions observed for grass were 50 mLH2/gVS and 1.98 mLCH4/gVS, respectively. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicle, microgrid, photovoltaic, robust optimization, Stochastic Optimization.
With the deterioration of the environment and the depletion of fossil fuel energy, renewable energy has attracted worldwide attention because of its continuous availability from nature. Despite this continuous availability, the uncertainty of intermittent power is a problem for grid dispatching. This paper reports on a study of the scheduling and optimization of microgrid systems for photovoltaic (PV) power and electric vehicles (EVs). We propose a mathematical model to address the uncertainty of PV output and EV charging behavior, and model scheduling optimization that minimizes the economic and environmental cost of a microgrid system. A semi-infinite dual optimization model is then used to deal with the uncertain variables, which can be solved with a robust optimization algorithm. A numerical case study shows that the security and stability of the solution obtained by robust optimization outperformed that of stochastic optimization.
