Reviewing Usage, Potentials, and Limitations of Renewable Energy Sources
George E. Halkos, Eleni-Christina Gkampoura.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate change, economic growth, human health, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, usage, willingness to pay.
The world’s ever-increasing population, combined with economic and technological growth and a new, modern way of life, has led to high energy demand and consumption. Fossil fuels have been the main energy source for many years, but their use has many negative impacts on the environment. This has made the transition to renewable energy sources necessary in order to address climate change and meet the 1.5 °C goal. This paper is a review of the different types of renewables, their potentials and limitations, and their connection to climate change, economic growth, and human health. It also examines consumers’ willingness to pay for renewables in different countries, based on the existing literature. IEA (International Energy Agency) data are analyzed, concerning renewables’ current use, the evolution of their usage, and forecasts about their future usage. Finally, policies and strategies are recommended in order to address climate change and fully integrate renewables as a sustainable ene... [more]
Distributed FACTS for Power System Transient Stability Control
Sergio Bruno, Giovanni De Carne, Massimo La Scala.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: corrective control actions, dynamic security assessment, dynamic series compensation, FACTS, power system dynamic security, transient stability.
The high penetration of renewable energy sources, combined with a limited possibility to expand the transmission infrastructure, stretches the system stability in the case of faults. For this reason, operators are calling for additional control flexibility in the grid. In this paper, we propose the deployment of switchable reactors and capacitors distributed on the grid as a control resource for securing operations during severe contingencies and avoiding potential blackouts. According to the operating principles, the line reactance varies by switching on or off a certain number of distributed series reactors and capacitors and, therefore, the stabilizing control rule is based on a stepwise time-discrete control action. A control strategy, based on dynamic optimization, is proposed and tested on a realistic-sized transmission system.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: forced convection, friction factor, hybrid nanofluid, porous media, temperature uniformity.
Adding nanoparticles to fluid has led to a new class of fluids named as nanofluids. Different concentrations and its effective cooling have attracted many engineering applications to test this new fluid. Lately, important heat enhancement has been observed by dispersing two distinct nanoparticles in the regular fluid. This type of hybrid nanofluid has led researchers to study its effectiveness in the cooling process. Here, we experimentally studied the forced convection of Al2O3−Cu hybrid nanofluid in porous media at a constant flow rate and heating condition. The numerical code after being calibrated with the experimental results is used to predict the effectiveness in cooling by using a set of hybrid fluid of TiO2−SiO2, MWCNT−Fe3O4, and ND−Fe3O4 at different concentrations. In the experiment, we used water and a water−ethylene glycol mixture as base fluids. The results revealed that the hybrid fluid contributed to heat enhancement levied increased pumping power. However, the index of... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioenergy, metal recovery, phytoremediation, plant utilization, soil contaminants.
Phytoremediation is a technology based on the use of green plants to remove, relocate, deactivate, or destroy harmful environmental pollutants such as heavy metals, radionuclides, hydrocarbons, and pharmaceuticals. Under the general term of phytoremediation, several processes with distinctively different mechanisms of action are hidden. In this paper, the most popular modes of phytoremediation are described and discussed. A broad but concise review of available literature research with respect to the dominant process mechanism is provided. Moreover, methods of plant biomass utilization after harvesting, with particular regard to possibilities of “bio-ore” processing for metal recovery, or using energy crops as a valuable source for bio-energy production (bio-gas, bio-ethanol, bio-oil) are analyzed. Additionally, obstacles hindering the commercialization of phytoremediation are presented and discussed together with an indication of future research trends.

David de la Hoz, Guillermo Salinas, Vladimir Šviković, Pedro Alou.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: magnetic component, power electronics, space application, thermal network.
The volume of magnetic components for space applications, directly related to the launch cost, and their performance are critically influenced by their capability to dissipate the internal electromagnetic power losses. This is the reason why accurate thermal models are required. Furthermore, these models need to be simple and versatile to allow a fast analysis of many different designs. In this study, a specific methodology to analyze inductors and transformers by thermal networks and a simplification based on the Thevenin’s theorem leading to a simple equation are proposed. The specific details to address thermal modelling for space magnetic components are discussed. A generic 50 W Flyback transformer for space applications is analyzed in this study and experimental validation is provided, showing that the proposed method leads to a deviation in the temperature estimation between 1 °C and 5 °C, which is considered quite a good result from the literature review carried out.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand charges, Optimization, renewable generation, virtual power plant, water-energy management.
The effects of climate change seriously affect agriculture at different latitudes of the planet because periods of drought are intensifying and the availability of water for agricultural irrigation is reducing. In addition, the energy cost associated with pumping water has increased notably in recent years due to, among other reasons, the maximum demand charges that are applied annually according to the contracted demand in each facility. Therefore, very efficient management of both water resources and energy resources is required. This article proposes the integration of water-energy management in a virtual power plant (VPP) model for the optimization of energy costs and maximum demand charges. For the development of the model, a problem related to the optimal operation of electricity generation and demand resources arises, which is formulated as a nonlinear mixed-integer programming model (MINLP). The objective is to maximize the annual operating profit of the VPP. It is worth mentio... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: integrated pressurized water reactors, passive safety systems, small modular reactors.
In recent years, the trend in small modular reactor (SMR) technology development has been towards the water-cooled integral pressurized water reactor (iPWR) type. The innovative and unique characteristics of iPWR-type SMRs provide an enhanced safety margin, and thus offer the potential to expand the use of safe, clean, and reliable nuclear energy to a broad range of energy applications. Currently in the world, there are about eleven (11) iPWR-type SMRs concepts and designs that are in various phases of development: under construction, licensed or in the licensing review process, the development phase, and conceptual design phase. Lack of national and/or internatonal comparative framework for safety in SMR design, as well as the proprietary nature of designs introduces non-uniformity and uncertainties in regulatory review. That said, the major primary reactor coolant system components, such as the steam generator (SG), pressurizer (PRZ), and control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) are integr... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: arylamine, carbazole, hole transporting material, hybrid photovoltaics, molecular glass, perovskite solar cell.
In perovskite photovoltaics (PSCs), the role of the hole transporting material (HTM) is highly important as it significantly influents to the global device’s performance and stability. Hole transporter ensures the extraction of hole at the perovskite/HTM interface and transport it towards the cathode. Thus, accurate molecular design affording to efficient and cost-effective HTM is of major interest. Small molecules having glass forming property is an attractive class as it can form morphologically stable thin film. Herein, a carbazole molecular glass bearing a polymerizable function was designed and synthetized. Its characteristics are suitable for application as HTM in PSCs. The preliminary photovoltaic application lead to device efficiency of 14−15% depending on the chemical composition of the perovskite employed. These promising results open the way to design new alternative molecular and polymeric HTMs suitable for solution processed hybrid solar cells.

Keywords: air handling unit, CFD model, energy recovery, GAHX, geothermal energy, Köppen climatic areas.
In this paper the energy performances carried out by an investigation conducted on a Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, composed by an Air Handling Unit (AHU) for the primary air coupled with a horizontal-pipes Ground-to-Air Heat eXchanger (GAHX) and fan-coil units, for an office building, supposed to be placed in four different cities (Rio de Janeiro, Dubai, Naples, Ottawa) belonging to four different worldwide climatic areas, according to the Köppen climate classification. The investigation is performed by means of a two dimensional numerical model, experimentally validated, of an GAHX solved with finite element method. The results introduced in this paper are carried out by varying the length of the pipes and the air flow velocity; thus, also the number of tubes forming the GAHX is varied since the volumetric flow rate to be provided to the AHU must be kept constant. The energy performances of the above-mentioned HVAC system are analyzed, both in summer and in... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational method, heat transfer rate, MHD, natural convection, transition.
Natural convection of liquid metal in an annular enclosure under the influence of azimuthal static magnetic field was numerically studied. The liquid metal in the enclosure whose cross-sectional area is square was heated from an inner vertical wall and cooled from an outer vertical wall both isothermally whereas the other two horizontal walls were assumed to be adiabatic. The static azimuthal magnetic field was imposed by a long straight electric coil that was located at the central axis of the annular enclosure. The computations were carried out for the Prandtl number 0.025, the Rayleigh number 104, 5 × 105 and 107, and the Hartmann number 0−100,000 by using an in-house code. It was found that the contour map of the electric potential was similar to that of the Stokes stream function of the velocity regardless of the Hartmann number. Likewise, the contour map of the pressure was similar to the Stokes stream function of the electric current density in the case of the high Hartmann numb... [more]

Keywords: bidirectional battery, bidirectional dc-dc converter, constant dc-capacitor voltage-control-based harmonics compensation, single-phase three-wire distribution feeders, three-leg PWM rectifier.
This paper deals with power quality compensation in single-phase three-wire distribution feeders using a constant DC-capacitor voltage-control (CDCVC)-based strategy of the previously proposed bidirectional battery charger (BBC) for electric vehicles under the distorted source-voltage and load-current conditions. Instantaneous active power flowing into the three-leg pulse-width-modulated (PWM) rectifier in the BBC is discussed. The instantaneous power flowing into the three-leg PWM rectifier demonstrates that the CDCVC-based strategy obtains balanced and sinusoidal source currents at a unity power factor, where the source-side active power is balanced with the load-side active power. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that balanced and sinusoidal source currents at a unity power factor are attained in single-phase three-wire distribution feeders with both battery-charging and -discharging operations for electric vehicles even though both source voltage and load currents ar... Keywords: 3R2C model, building model, Crank-Nicolson finite difference method, dynamic building simulation, parameters identification, Particle Swarm Optimization, thermal network model.
This paper proposes an approach to develop building dynamic thermal models that are of paramount importance for controller application. In this context, controller requires a low-order, computationally efficient, and accurate models to achieve higher performance. An efficient building model is developed by having proper structural knowledge of low-order model and identifying its parameter values. Simplified low-order systems can be developed using thermal network models using thermal resistances and capacitances. In order to determine the low-order model parameter values, a specific approach is proposed using a stochastic particle swarm optimization. This method provides a significant approximation of the parameters when compared to the reference model whilst allowing low-order model to achieve 40% to 50% computational efficiency than the reference one. Additionally, extensive simulations are carried to evaluate the proposed simplified model with solar radiation and identified model pa... [more]
Causality between CO2 Emissions and Stock Markets

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon emissions, climate change, fossil fuels, global warming, Granger causality, predictability, sophisticated financial markets, stock market returns.
It is generally accepted in the scientific community that carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which lead to global warming, arise from using fossil fuels, namely coal, oil and gas, as energy sources. Consequently, alleviating the effects of global warming and climate change necessitates substantial reductions in the use of fossil fuel energy. This paper uses a financial market-based approach to investigate whether positive stock returns cause changes in CO2 emissions, or vice-versa, based on the Granger causality test to determine cause and effect, or leader and follower. If Granger causality can be determined in any direction, this will enable a clear directional statement regarding temporal predictability between stock returns and CO2 emissions. The empirical data include annual CO2 emissions from fuel combustion of the three main fossil energy sources, namely coal, oil and gas, based on 18 countries with sophisticated financial markets that are in the Morgan Stanley Capital Internationa... Keywords: distributed generation, energy communities, energy management, mathematical optimization, microgrids, regulatory framework, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
The following paper aims to prove the importance of embedding the regulatory framework when analyzing the distributed generation activity of an energy community. At present, most of the scientific literature has focused on distributed energy, and energy communities address the issue of regulatory frameworks qualitatively. In this paper, the most representative regulatory frameworks devoted to the promotion of energy communities were analyzed and synthesized, namely, feed-in tariffs, net metering, and the self-consumption scheme. As a result, an algebraic model able to represent the essence of the regulatory structures related to those remuneration mechanisms was obtained. Next, this model was embedded into a physical model, based on real data, previously created. The resulting Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) was used to identify the implications of these frameworks. The results demonstrate the impact of regulatory schemes on energy management and economic results of an energy commu... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrochar, hydrothermal carbonization, sewage sludge, soil amendment, solid biofuel.
Conventional activated sludge systems, still widely used to treat wastewater, produce large amounts of solid waste that is commonly landfilled or incinerated. This study addresses the potential use of Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) to valorize sewage sludge residues examining the properties of hydrochars depending on HTC process conditions and sewage sludge withdrawal point. With increasing HTC severity (process residence time and temperature), solid yield, total Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and solid pH decrease while ash content increases. Hydrochars produced from primary (thickened) and secondary (digested and dewatered) sludge show peculiar distinct properties. Hydrochars produced from thickened sludge show good fuel properties in terms of Higher Heating Value (HHV) and reduced ash content. However, relatively high volatile matter and O:C and H:C ratios result in thermal reactivity significantly higher than typical coals. Both series of carbonized secondary sludges show neutral p... This research paper introduces a mathematical model to predict the performance of photovoltaic−thermal systems (PV-T), based on a thin layer flexible panel and an air pipe, by using the Trnsys® software tool to simulate energetic systems. The main advantage of these types of panels is their easy portability, making them ideal to address thermal needs in several scenarios. In the military field, there is an important concern about the use of sustainable energy; for instance, cooling facilities for infantry tents used in their deployments. In this research, a PV-T panel to cover electrical power needs for an infantry’s hangar unmanned air vehicle (UAV) is introduced. The proposed thermal model, based on the novelty of inertial mass (lump) as an approach to real panel behavior, has been validated through the comparison between Trnsys’ model simulation data, a real weather station, and data obtained in a test bed. Genopt’s simulation software is used to fit the model, allowing for the pred... [more]

Keywords: biofouling, bispectrum, diagnosis, spectral kurtosis, stator current, tidal stream turbine.
Most electrical machines and drive signals are non-Gaussian and are highly nonlinear in nature. A useful set of techniques to examine such signals relies on higher-order statistics (HOS) spectral representations. They describe statistical dependencies of frequency components that are neglected by traditional spectral measures, namely the power spectrum (PS). One of the most used HOS is the bispectrum where examining higher-order correlations should provide further details and information about the conditions of electric machines and drives. In this context, the stator currents of electric machines are of particular interest because they are periodic, nonlinear, and cyclostationary. This current is, therefore, well adapted for analysis using bispectrum in the designing of an efficient condition monitoring method for electric machines and drives. This paper is, therefore, proposing a bispectrum-based diagnosis method dealing the with tidal stream turbine (TST) rotor blades biofouling iss... [more]

Keywords: building integrated photovoltaic thermal system, computational fluid dynamics simulation, whole-building dynamic energy simulation.
This study addresses the thermal and energy performance assessment of a Building Integrated Photovoltaic Thermal (BIPVT) system installed on the façade of a test room in Solar XXI, a Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) located in Lisbon, Portugal. A numerical analysis using the dynamic simulation tool EnergyPlus was carried out for assessing the performance of the test room with the BIPVT integrated on its façade through a parametric analysis of 14 scenarios in two conditions: a) receiving direct solar gains on the glazing surface and b) avoiding direct solar gains on the glazing surface. Additionally, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the BIPVT system was performed using ANSYS Fluent. The findings of this work demonstrate that the BIPVT has a good potential to improve the sustainability of the building by reducing the nominal energy needs to achieve thermal comfort, reducing up to 48% the total energy needs for heating and cooling compared to the base case. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: finite element, frozen permeability, FSCW, IPMSM, spoke-type, torque ripple reduction, torque separation.
This paper investigates the theoretical reasons behind the low torque ripple of a fractional-slot concentrated-winding (FSCW) spoke-type interior permanent-magnet (IPM) machine obtained via a genetic algorithm-based optimization. To better understand the torque performance of the IPMM, this paper uses the frozen permeability method to segregate the overall torque into four components—magnet torque, reluctance torque, cogging torque, and the torque caused by cross-magnetization. Equations and detailed procedures of the torque separation method are discussed in the paper. Analysis of the separated torque components reveals that the counteraction between ripples of different torques leads to the low torque ripple. At high-load conditions, the magnetic saturation alters the torque ripples caused by cross-magnetization to offset ripples of other components resulting in minimization of the overall torque ripple. A detailed parametric analysis of the geometric parameters was carried out to un... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: dielectric composites, dielectrics, energy harvester, ferroelectrets, piezoelectrets, piezoelectric materials.
Ferroelectret-based piezoelectric transducers are, nowadays, commonly used in energy harvesting applications due to their high piezoelectric activity. Unfortunately, the processing properties of such materials are limited, and new solutions are sought. This paper presents a new solution of a piezoelectric transducer containing electret bubbles immersed in an elastomer matrix. Application of a gas-filled dielectric bubble as the fundamental cell of the piezo-active structure is discussed. A simplified model of the structure, containing electret thin-wall bubbles and elastomer dielectric filling, was applied to determine the value of the piezoelectric coefficient, d33. An exemplary structure containing piezo-active bubbles, made of an electret material, immersed in an elastomer filling is presented. The influence of the mechanical and electrical properties of particular components on the structure piezoelectric properties are experimentally examined and confirmed. The quasi-static method... Keywords: acid gas, geothermal fluids, NCG reinjection, solubility.
Geothermal energy is acknowledged globally as a renewable resource, which, unlike solar, wind or wave energy, can be continuously exploited. The geothermal fluids usually have some acid gas content, which needs to be precisely taken into account when predicting the actual potential of a power plant in dealing with an effective reinjection. One of the key parameters to assess is the solubility of the acid gas, as it influences the thermodynamic conditions (saturation pressure and temperature) of the fluid. Therefore, an enhanced solubility model for the CO2-H2S-water system is developed in this study, based on the mutual solubility of gases. The model covers a wide range of pressures and temperatures. The genetic algorithm is employed to calculate the correlation constants and corresponding solubility values of both CO2 and H2S as functions of pressure, temperature and the balance of the gas. The results are validated against previously published models and experimental data available i... [more]

Keywords: bio-crude oil, burner, coffee ground, flame stability, gas emission.
Coffee ground has been recently considered as a new biomass resource in relation to the increasing coffee consumption worldwide. The bio-crude oil can be produced by fast pyrolysis of coffee ground, and it has advantages of larger heating values in comparison with those from other biomass. But the bio-crude oil from coffee ground has a significantly high viscosity which can hinder the application to conventional burners. In this study, a pilot-scale burner system with a 35 kW capacity with an air-blast atomizing nozzle was developed for the combustion of bio-crude oil from coffee ground with a high viscosity. A downward fuel injection system was adopted to enhance the ignition of fuel spray and the flame stabilization, and a movable block swirl generator was installed for the combustion air. The bio-crude oil was blended with ethanol at the volumetric ratio of 9:1 to enhance the combustion characteristics. The effect of various atomizing air pressures, swirl intensities, and overall eq... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Cloud computing, energy-efficiency, heterogeneous data center, thermal-aware, Virtual Machine.
In recent years, a large and growing body of literature has addressed the energy-efficient resource management problem in data centers. Due to the fact that cooling costs still remain the major portion of the total data center energy cost, thermal-aware resource management techniques have been employed to make additional energy savings. In this paper, we formulate the problem of minimizing the total energy consumption of a heterogeneous data center (MITEC) as a non-linear integer optimization problem. We consider both computing and cooling energy consumption and provide a thermal-aware Virtual Machine (VM) allocation heuristic based on the genetic algorithm. Experimental results show that, using the proposed formulation, up to 30 % energy saving is achieved compared to thermal-aware greedy algorithms and power-aware VM allocation heuristics.
