A Thermal Investigation and Optimization of an Air-Cooled Lithium-Ion Battery Pack
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air-cooling, lithium-ion battery, optimal configuration, thermal management system.
An effective battery thermal management system (BTMS) is essential to ensure that the battery pack operates within the normal temperature range, especially for multi-cell batteries. This paper studied the optimal configuration of an air-cooling (AC) system for a cylindrical battery pack. The thermal parameters of the single battery were measured experimentally. The heat dissipation performance of a single battery was analyzed and compared with the simulation results. The experimental and simulation results were in good agreement, which proves the validity of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. Various schemes with different battery arrangements, different positions of the inlet and outlet of the cooling system and the number of inlets and outlets were compared. The results showed that an arrangement that uses a small length-width ratio is more conducive to promoting the performance of the cooling system. The inlet and outlet configuration of the cooling system, which facilita... [more]

Sensitivity Analysis of Window Frame Components Effect on Thermal Transmittance
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: hot box, numerical analysis, sensitivity analysis, window frames.
Standard ISO 10077-2 gives the procedure to calculate thermal transmittances of window frames in 2D numerical simulations. It also introduces some examples of frame geometrical models with all necessary input data and the solutions so as to perform validation of the applied numerical tools. In the present paper, the models prepared with a commercial finite volume software of a PVC window frame were first positively validated with the results given in the Standard. An experimental test was then implemented to confirm the simulated data, with satisfactory agreement. The numerical code was used on one of the frames provided by the Standard to perform a sensitivity analysis of all the components and boundary conditions playing a role on the definition of the frame thermal transmittance, such as surface heat transfer coefficients, values of the solid thermal conductivity, emissivity and insulation properties of air gaps. Results demonstrate that the air gap properties represent the most inf... [more]

Experimental Assessment on Air Clearance of Multiple Valve Unit Considering Switching Impulse and DC Superimposed Switching Impulse
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: air clearance, critical flashover voltage, DC, DC pre-stress, dielectric characteristics, HVDC, multiple valve unit, superimposed, switching impulse.
Multiple valve unit (MVU), which converts AC to DC and DC to AC, is one of the key elements of high voltage DC (HVDC) transmission. Therefore, the insulation design of MVU against overvoltage should be considered for the stable and reliable operation of HVDC transmission system. Especially, the air clearance of MVU should be calculated based the switching impulse, since it is fatal to MVU in terms of electrical insulation. However, the previous studies were limited to wave front, and the air clearance of the switching impulse is specified only for an ultra-high voltage (UHV) above 750 kV. As a result, it is difficult to calculate the air clearance of MVU which must endure for a switching impulse under 750 kV. In addition, when the switching impulse introduced while the MVU is in normal operation, it is superimposed to DC and creates the most severe situation, but the studies on such subjects are also insufficient. Therefore, as a fundamental step to calculate the air clearance of MVU,... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: community energy storage, energy system integration, energy transition, responsible innovation, socio-technical innovation.
With energy transition gaining momentum, energy storage technologies are increasingly spotlighted as they can effectively handle mismatches in supply and demand. The decreasing cost of distributed energy generation technologies and energy storage technologies as well as increasing demand for local flexibility is opening up new possibilities for the deployment of energy storage technologies in local energy communities. In this context, community energy storage has potential to better integrate energy supply and demand at the local level and can contribute towards accommodating the needs and expectations of citizens and local communities as well as future ecological needs. However, there are techno-economical and socio-institutional challenges of integrating energy storage technologies in the largely centralized present energy system, which demand socio-technical innovation. To gain insight into these challenges, this article studies the technical, demand and political articulations of n... [more]

A Learning Variable Neighborhood Search Approach for Induction Machines Bearing Failures Detection and Diagnosis
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: bearing failure, classical mechanics-inspired optimization (CMO), clustering, failure detection, failure diagnosis, induction machine, learning, variable neighborhood search (VNS).
This paper proposes a three-phase metaheuristic-based approach for induction machine bearing failure detection and diagnosis. It consists of extracting and processing different failure types features to set up a knowledge base, which contains different failure types. The first phase consists in pre-processing the measured signals by aggregating them and preparing the data in exploitable formats for the clustering. The second phase ensures the induction machine operating mode diagnosis. A measured signals clustering is performed to build classes where each one represents a health state. A variable neighborhood search (VNS) metaheuristic is designed for data clustering. Moreover, VNS is hybridized with a classical mechanics-inspired optimization (CMO) metaheuristic to balance global exploration and local exploitation during the evolutionary process. The third phase consists of two-step failure detection, setting up a knowledge base containing different failure types, and defining a repre... [more]

Predictive Direct Power Control for Dual-Active-Bridge Multilevel Inverter Based on Conservative Power Theory
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-connected application, multilevel inverter, unbalanced grid voltage.
This paper explores the feasibility of multilevel dual-active bridge-inverter (DABMI) applications for grid-connected applications of a modern Model of Predictive Direct Power Control (MPDPC) based on the conservative power theory (CPT). In the case of unbalanced grid voltages, the objective of the study is to promote continued active and reactive energy in MPDPC without reducing efficiency such as transient response and current harmonics. The nature of the instantaneous p-q theory permits only one out of three control targets to be fulfilled. The proposed control approached directly regulates the instantaneous active and reactive power to achieve three particular control objectives namely sinusoidal and symmetrical grid current, cancelling twice of fundamental grid frequency reactive power ripples, and removing twice grid frequency active power ripple. The techniques of complicated Grid part sequence extraction are unnecessary and improved at no extra expense, as is the case with curr... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cycle recognitions, dynamic programming, energy management, plug-in hybrid vehicle, series hybrid vehicle.
The objective of this work is to develop an optimal management strategy to improve the energetic efficiency of a hybrid electric vehicle. The strategy is built based on an extensive experimental study of mobility in order to allow trips recognition and prediction. For this experimental study, a dedicated autonomous acquisition system was developed. On working days, most trips are constrained and can be predicted with a high level of confidence. The database was built to assess the energy and power needed based on a static model for three types of cars. It was found that most trips could be covered by a 10 kWh battery. Regarding the optimization strategy, a novel real time capable energy management approach based on dynamic vehicle model was created using Energetic Macroscopic Representation. This real time capable energy management strategy is done by a combination of cycle prediction based on results obtained during the experimental study. The optimal control strategy for common cycle... [more]

On-Line Estimation of the Ultrasonic Power in a Continuous Flow Sonochemical Reactor
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: mathematical modeling, on-line estimation of reactor parameters, sonochemical reactor, ultrasonic power measurement.
Sonochemical reactors can be very effective in many applications, including: degradation of chemical pollutants, inactivation of microorganisms, or production of biofuels. However, due to various factors, the ultrasonic power that is dissipated into sonicated liquid may vary in time. Hence, it is obvious that the ultrasonic power must be known for an optimal design and operation of the sonoreactor. In this paper, we present a method for on-line estimation of the ultrasonic power in continuous flow sonoreactors. In this method, we design an observer that estimates unknown model parameters by using a mathematical model of the sonoreactor and by measuring input and output temperatures in the sonoreactor system. The effectiveness of the method is shown for a simulated and real continuous flow sonoreactors. We also discuss the possibilities of ultrasonic power stabilization by using control algorithms.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: dynamic conditions, HeLLo, historic masonries, hygrothermal measurement, in situ, metering hot box.
The main purpose of the HeLLo project is to contribute to data available on the literature on the real hygrothermal behavior of historic walls and the suitability of insulation technologies. Furthermore, it also aims at minimizing the energy simulation errors at the design phase and at improving their conservation features. In this framework, one of the preliminary activities of the study is the creation of a real in situ hot box to measure and analyze different insulation technologies applied to a real historic wall, to quantify the hygrothermal performance of a masonry building. Inside this box, ‘traditional’ experiments can be carried out: recording heat flux, surface temperature, and air temperatures, as well as relative humidity values through the use of a new sensing system (composed of thermocouples and temperature/relative humidity combined sensors). Within this paper, the process of development, construction, and validation of this new metering box is exhibited. The new hot bo... [more]

Cost-Aware Design and Simulation of Electrical Energy Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: cost modeling and simulation, cyber-physical system, design space exploration, design-time optimization, electrical energy system, sustainable energy planning, sustainable power planning, SystemC-AMS.
One fundamental dimension in the design of an electrical energy system (EES) is the economic analysis of the possible design alternatives, in order to ensure not just the maximization of the energy output but also the return on the investment and the possible profits. Since the energy output and the economic figures of merit are intertwined, for an accurate analysis it is necessary to analyze these two aspects of the problem concurrently, in order to define effective energy management policies. This paper achieves that objective by tracking and measuring the energy efficiency and the cost effectiveness in a single modular framework. The two aspects are modeled separately, through the definition of dedicated simulation layers governed by dedicated virtual buses that elaborate and manage the information and energy flows. Both layers are simulated concurrently within the same simulation infrastructure based on SystemC-AMS, so as to recreate at runtime the mutual influence of the two aspec... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, Exergy Efficiency, hybrid nanofluid, mesoporous silica modified with copper, parabolic trough solar collector (PTSC).
Designing the most efficient parabolic trough solar collector (PTSC) is still a demanding and challenging research area in solar energy systems. Two effective recommended methods for this purpose that increase the thermal characteristics of PTSCs are adding turbulators and nanofluids. To study the effects of the two approaches on the energy efficiency of PTSCs, a stainless steel turbulator was used and solid nanoparticles of Cu/SBA-15 were added to the water with the volume concentrations of 0.019% to 0.075%. The generated turbulence in the fluid flow was modeled by the SST k−ω turbulent model. The results in daylight demonstrated that energy efficiency increases steadily by 11:30 a.m., and then, starts to drop gradually due to more irradiations at noon. It was observed that applying the turbulator to the studied PTSC has a significant influence on the enhancement of energy efficiency. Adding the nanoparticles augmented the average Nusselt number inside the solar collector in various s... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: automatic generation control, battery storage system, load forecast, reliability index, system frequency control.
Risk in a power system’s ability to survive imminent disturbances without recourse to low operational cost and non-interruptive energy delivery remains the responsibility of every grid operator. Intermittencies in renewable energy and dynamic load variations influence the quality of power supply. The sudden changes affect the system frequency, compromising the reliability of the system grid; generation response to frequency regulation is momentous in such an incident. Slower response or smaller reserve capacity may cause a power shortage. This paper proposes a novel predictive scheme for a short-term operational reliability evaluation for system operations planning. The proposed method evaluates the operational reliability of system frequency whiles considering high renewable power penetration and energy storage system incorporation. Required energy generations, and other grid parameters, are modelled as stochastic inputs to the framework. We formulate a reliability index as a frequenc... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: attack vector construction, effective attack, false data injection attack, smart grids, sparse attack.
To improve the security of smart grids (SGs) by finding the system vulnerability, this paper investigates the sparse attack vectors’ construction method for malicious false data injection attack (FDIA). The drawbacks of the existing attack vector construction methods include avoiding discussing the feasible region and validity of the attack vector. For the above drawbacks, this paper has three main contributions: (1) To construct the appropriate attack evading bad data detection (BDD), the feasible region of the attack vector is proved by projection transformation theory. The acquisition of the feasible region can help the defender to formulate the defense strategy; (2) an effective attack is proposed and the constraint of effectiveness is obtained using norm theory; (3) the domain of the state variations caused by the attack vector in the feasible region is calculated, while the singular value decomposition method is adopted. Finally, an attack vector is constructed based on l 0... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carrier selective contact, passivation, rear emitter heterojunction.
In this research, simulations were performed to investigate the effects of carrier selective front contact (CSFC) layer and defect state of hydrogenated amorphous silicon passivation layer/n-type crystalline silicon interface in silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells employing the Automat for Simulation of hetero-structure (AFORS-HET) simulation program. The results demonstrated the effects of band offset determined by band bending at the interface of the CSFC layer/passivation layer. In addition, the nc-SiOx: H CSFC layer not only reduces parasitic absorption loss but also has a tunneling effect and field effect passivation. Furthermore, it increased the selectivity of contact. In the experimental cell, nc-SiOx:H was used as the CSFC layer, where efficiency of the SHJ solar cell was 22.77%. Our investigation shows that if a SiOx layer passivation layer is used, the device can achieve efficiency up to 25.26%. This improvement in the cell is mainly due to the enhancement in open circu... “Leaky Bucket” of Kazakhstan’s Power Grid: Losses and Inefficient Distribution of Electric Power
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: costs, electric power efficiency, electric power management, Kazakhstan.
This paper aims to determine and explain the main factors for power losses (the so-called “leaky bucket” effect) in Kazakhstan and the reasons for inefficient energy distribution within the country. Energy efficiency in Kazakhstan is much lower compared to more economically developed countries. The differences between energy efficiency in various regions of Kazakhstan are also significant. This article explores the impact of administrative monopoly tariffs on the regional energy efficiency, based on a national study conducted in Kazakhstan in 2017. The purpose of the study was to identify the administrative barriers and their impact on the sustainability of enterprise development. What hinders the distribution of energy resources among different regions is artificial barriers in the energy market and the administrative tariff monopoly for electric power. This leads to the inefficient distribution of resources throughout the country. In addition, it is difficult to leverage low distribu... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: concentrated solar power, innovation, pilot plant, product deployment.
Industries with fast-developing technologies and knowledge-intensive business services rely on the development of scientific knowledge for their growth. This is also true in the renewable energy industry such as in concentrating solar power (CSP) plants, which have undergone intense development and expansion in the last two decades. Yet knowledge generation is not sufficient; its dissemination and internalization by the industry is indispensable for new product development. This paper contributes to providing empirical evidence on the known link between knowledge development and firm growth. In 10 years the cost of electricity produced through CSP has decreased five-fold. This decrease has only been possible due to innovation projects developed through a complex network of research and development (R&D) collaborations and intense investment, both public and (to a greater extent) private. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: liquid sorption storage, long-term thermal energy storage, power-to-heat, seasonal energy flexibility, seasonal load shifting, seasonal thermal energy storage, thermochemical energy storage, virtual battery effect.
The article estimates energy flexibility provided to the electricity grid by integration of long-term thermal energy storage in buildings. To this end, a liquid sorption storage combined with a compression heat pump is studied for a single-family home. This combination acts as a double-stage heat pump comprised of a thermal and an electrical stage. It lowers the temperature lift to be overcome by the electrical heat pump and thus increases its coefficient of performance. A simplified model is used to quantify seasonal energy flexibility by means of electric load shifting evaluated with a monthly resolution. Results are presented for unlimited and limited storage capacity leading to a total seasonal electric load shift of 631.8 kWh/a and 181.7 kWh/a, respectively. This shift, referred to as virtual battery effect, provided through long-term thermal energy storage is large compared to typical electric battery capacities installed in buildings. March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electric vehicle, peak shaving, smart grid, urban complex, V2G.
Urban complex (UC) is the main place of citizens’ life and work. The construction of an UC often needs to expand the capacity of the power equipment. This paper proposes to use electric vehicles (EVs) in an UC to reduce the power load of the UC during peak periods, so that lower capacity power equipment can be used to reduce the construction costs of the UC and the transformation of electrical facilities. In order to find the relationship between parking and power load in the UC, the UC is decomposed into different functional areas for research. Then, we build a parking information database for clustering and calculation. Divide the load peak into adjustment intervals of equal duration. The EVs parked in the UC for each regulation interval (RI) are grouped according to parking characteristics. Establish an objective function with the minimum load variance during peak hours. The discharge capacity of each group in each RI is obtained and distributed to each EV to realize peak load reduc... [more]

Pellet Production from Woody and Non-Woody Feedstocks: A Review on Biomass Quality Evaluation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: agropellet, blending, quality, standards, woody pellet.
Forest and agricultural biomass are important sources of renewable and sustainable fuel for energy production. Their increasing consumption is mainly related to the increase in global energy demand and fossil fuel prices but also to the limited availability of petroleum and the lower environmental impact of these biomass compared with other non-renewable fuels. In particular, the pellet sector has seen important developments in terms of both production and the number of installed transformation plants. In addition, pellet production from non-woody biomass is increasing in importance. One of the fundamental aspects for the correct and sustainable use of a biofuel is evaluation of its quality. This is even more important when dealing with pellet production, considering the broad spectrum of possible raw materials for pelletizing. Understanding the Aerodynamic Behavior and Energy Conversion Capability of Small Darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbines in Turbulent Flows
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Darrieus, experiments, turbulence, VAWT.
Small Darrieus vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have recently been proposed as a possible solution for adoption in the built environment as their performance degrades less in complex and highly-turbulent flows. Some recent analyses have even shown an increase of the power coefficient for the large turbulence intensities and length scales typical of such environments. Starting from these insights, this study presents a combined numerical and experimental analysis aimed at assessing the physical phenomena that take place during the operation of a Darrieus VAWT in turbulent flows. Wind tunnel experiments provided a quantification of the performance variation of a two-blade VAWT rotor for different levels of turbulence intensity and length scale. Furthermore, detailed experiments on an individual airfoil provided an estimation of the aerodynamics at high turbulence levels and low Reynolds numbers. Subject: System Identification
Keywords: control, identification, Modelling, supercritical power plants, ultra-supercritical power plants.
This paper presents a critical review of the research conducted for modeling and controlling supercritical power plants. Thermal power plants are classified according to the boiler pressure to supercritical and subcritical. The modeling concepts and control strategies of supercritical generation units are far more complex than those of subcritical. On the other hand, supercritical generation technologies are more efficient and much cleaner than subcritical generation units. From a deep technical analysis of the literature, there is no review that is dedicated to models-based control of supercritical power plants and most previous reviews are found to be too general to modeling-based control of fossil fuelled energy sources. This review reports the advancements on modeling and control of supercritical and ultra-supercritical plants as cleaner generation technologies. Systematic Frequency and Statistical Analysis Approach to Identify Different Gas−Liquid Flow Patterns Using Two Electrodes Capacitance Sensor: Experimental Evaluations
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: air–water, capacitance sensor, capacitance signal, flow pattern, frequency analysis, liquid-gas, multiphase flow, statistical analysis.
This work proposes a method to distinguish between various flow patterns in a multiphase gas−liquid system. The complete discrimination between different flow patterns can be achieved by mapping the corresponding frequency and statistical parameters. These parameters are usually obtained from further analysis conducted on the signal data of the utilized sensor. The proposed technique is based on establishing interrelationships between these parameters, namely the mean (m), the standard deviation ( σ ¯ ), power spectral density (PSD), the width of the characteristic frequency peaks (Δƒ), the skewness ( γ 1 ) and the kurtosis ( γ 2 ). Therefore, a relatively simple electrical capacitance sensor with two electrodes was designed and implemented on a two-phase flow apparatus with a circular pipe.
