Study on Mineral Compositions of Direct Carbonated Steel Slag by QXRD, TG, FTIR, and XPS

Steel slag CO2 sequestration helps mitigate global warming and decrease the stockpile of steel slag (SS). Through orthogonal design tests and single-factor tests, this paper evaluated the effects of the water/solid mass ratio (w/s), gypsum ratio (G/SS), molding pressure, and curing duration on uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and CO2 uptake of the compacts. The results indicated that high w/s enhanced both strength and CO2 capture ability. The proper addition of gypsum helps promote UCS increase and CO2 uptake of steel slag. In addition, increasing the molding pressure can significantly improve UCS without reducing CO2 uptake. The optimum conditions in the study were a w/s of 0.20, G/SS of 1/16, and molding pressure of 27 MPa, under which conditions 1 d UCS and CO2 uptake were 55.30 MPa and 12.36%, respectively. Co-Design Optimization of Direct Drive PMSGs for Offshore Wind Turbines Based on Wind Speed Profile

This paper presents a new method to optimize, from a working cycle defined by torque and speed profiles, both the design and the control strategy of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs). The case of a 10 MW direct-drive permanent magnet generator for an Offshore wind turbine was chosen to illustrate this method, which is based on the d−q axis equivalent circuit model. It allows to optimize, with a reduced computation time, the design, considering either a flux weakening control strategy (FW) or a maximum torque per Ampere control (MTPA) strategy, while respecting all the constraints—particularly the thermal constraint, which is characterized by a transient regime. The considered objective is to minimize the mass and the average electric losses over all working points. Thermal and magnetic analytical models are validated by a 2D finite element analysis (FEA).

Study on Adsorption Properties of Modified Corn Cob Activated Carbon for Mercury Ion

In this study, corn cob was used as raw material and modified methods employing KOH and KMnO4 were used to prepare activated carbon with high adsorption capacity for mercury ions. Experiments on the effects of different influencing factors on the adsorption of mercury ions were undertaken. The results showed that when modified with KOH, the optimal adsorption time was 120 min, the optimum pH was 4; when modified with KMnO4, the optimal adsorption time was 60 min, the optimal pH was 3, and the optimal amount of adsorbent and the initial concentration were both 0.40 g/L and 100 mg/L under both modified conditions. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Numerical Study of Hydrocarbon Charge Reduction Methods in HVAC Heat Exchangers

Required refrigerant charge in heat pump systems with propane is analyzed. Two systems are compared: the first a direct heat pump, with fin-and-tube heat exchangers, and the second an indirect system, with plate heat exchangers with an additional brine-to-air heat exchanger. Each system was considered to be able to work reversibly, with 5 kW design cooling capacity in summer and 8 kW design heating capacity in winter. Two separately developed simulation codes were used to calculate the required refrigerant charge and the efficiency of each of the systems. The charge was reduced by the use of microfinned tubes up to 22% in direct system reduced using microfinned tubes compared to the smooth tube. For the indirect system using specially designed plate heat exchangers with the minimum internal volume, their charge was reduced by up to 66% compared to normal plate heat exchangers.

High-frequency components of common-mode voltage (CMV) induce the shaft voltage and bearing current, which lead to premature failures in motors. In addition, due to non-zero average CMV, the low-frequency components of CMV, particularly the third-order harmonic component, have been reported to cause difficulties in common-mode filter design. How to Procure Flexibility Services within the Electricity Distribution System: Lessons from an International Review of Innovation Projects

The aim of this paper is to analyse and evaluate the deployment of smart platforms (operated by distribution system operators—DSOs—or by independent parties) in key jurisdictions that facilitate the trading of flexibility services—primarily by DSOs. We look at key innovation projects/initiatives from seven jurisdictions, including Australia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, The Netherlands and Norway. We have deliberately selected 13 use cases that operate under different regulatory frameworks and market rules, and have been recently implemented (from 2017 onwards). With the selection of key use cases this study seeks to discuss the different smart architecture solutions and main capabilities across different demonstrators and their relationship to business as usual. It also analyses flexibility market designs, identifies main characteristics, and compares different price formation schemes and procurement methods. Given the large demand nowadays for domestic hot water, and its impact on modern building energy consumption, air source transcritical CO2 heat pumps have been extensively adopted for hot water production. Modification of Canola Oil Physicochemical Properties by Hexane and Ethanol with Regards of Its Application in Diesel Engine

A mixture of canola oil (Co), n-hexane (Hex), and ethyl alcohol (Et) was proposed as a new energy material for powering diesel engines. For this purpose, surface tension, density, and viscosity measurements, as well as engine tests, were performed for 88%Co10%Hex2%Et and 83%Co15%Hex2%Et mixtures at 20 °C. The adsorption and volumetric properties of these mixtures were compared to those of individual mixture components, as well as diesel fuel (Df) and oleic, linoleic, α-linolenic, palmitic, and stearic acids. It was revealed that the values of surface tension, viscosity, and density of Co were higher than those of the Co components. The addition of 10% Hex and 2% Et to Co caused a more than twofold decrease in its viscosity, while the addition of 15% Hex and 2% Et caused a more than fourfold reduction of Co viscosity. This article compares the emissions and efficiency of combusting a number of types of agrobiomass and wood pellets. A comparison was made on a moving grate pellet burner mounted in a boiler, where flue gas had a vertical flow via two pass heat exchangers with turbulization elements. Tests were conducted on wood pellets (ENPlus), miscanthus straw pellets, sunflower husk pellets, and corn stover pellets. During combustion, both wood and miscanthus pellets met the PN-EN 303-5:2012 emission and efficiency requirements. Corn stover pellets met the requirement on the nominal capacity. Microgrids operating on renewable energy resources have potential for powering rural areas located far from existing grid infrastructures. These small power systems typically host a hybrid energy system of diverse architecture and size. An effective integration of renewable energies resources requires careful design. Sizing methodologies often lack the consideration for reliability and this aspect is limited to power adequacy. There exists an inherent trade-off between renewable integration, cost, and reliability. To bridge this gap, a sizing methodology has been developed to perform multi-objective optimization, considering the three design objectives mentioned above. This method is based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) that returns the set of optimal solutions under all objectives.
