Non-Intrusive Identification of Load Patterns in Smart Homes Using Percentage Total Harmonic Distortion
Hari Prasad Devarapalli, V. S. S. Siva Sarma Dhanikonda, Sitarama Brahmam Gunturi.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: demand response, load disaggregation, percentage total harmonic distortion and non-intrusive identification of load pattern.
Demand Response (DR) plays a vital role in a smart grid, helping consumers plan their usage patterns and optimize electricity consumption and also reduce harmonic pollution in a distribution grid without compromising on their needs. The first step of DR is the disaggregation of loads and identifying them individually. The literature suggests that this is accomplished through electric features. Present-day households are using modern power electronic-based nonlinear loads such as LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps, electronic regulators and digital controllers to reduce the electricity consumption. Furthermore, usage of SMPS (Switched-Mode Power Supply) for computing and mobile phone chargers is increasing in every home. These nonlinear loads, while reducing electricity consumption, also introduce harmonic pollution into the distribution grid. This article presents a deterministic approach to the non-intrusive identification of load patterns using percentage Total Harmonic Distortion (THD... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 footprint, energy utilisation, industrial parks.
The potential for increased energy utilisation and reduced carbon footprint has been investigated for the industrial park Mo Industri Park (MIP), located at Mo i Rana, Norway. Process data has been gathered to quantify the energy flows between industrial clients. The energy flows have been visualised quantitatively in Sankey diagrams, while the quality of the available energy is presented in the form of a grand composite curve. High temperature flue gas from ferrosilicon (FeSi) production at Elkem Rana represent the largest heat source available for utilisation. A theoretical assessment of potential applications for this energy is presented and includes: (1) electricity production; (2) local biocarbon production, where surplus heat is utilised for drying of wood chips; (3) post combustion carbon capture, where surplus heat is utilised for solvent regeneration. The results indicate that increasing the current energy recovery from 400 GWh to >640 GWh is realistic. The increase in energy... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discharge distribution, energy savings, hybrid algorithm, open-channel water transfer system, optimizing operation, parallel pumping stations.
This article presents a methodology for optimizing the operation of parallel pumping stations in an open-channel water transfer system. A mathematical model was established for the minimum power with constraints on water level, flow rate and pump unit performance, and related factors. In the objective function, energy consumption of relevant equipment or facilities, such as main pump units, power transmission and transformation equipment, and auxiliary equipment, was considered comprehensively. The model was decomposed to two layers for solving. In the first layer, by using discharge distribution ratio as a variable, the flow rate and water level of the two water channels could be determined by employing the dichotomy approach (DA), and were calculated according to the principle of energy conservation, considering energy loss caused by hydraulic leakage and evaporation losses. In the second layer, the number of running pumps and the flow rate of a single pump were obtained by simulated... [more]

Anna Życzyńska, Zbigniew Suchorab, Dariusz Majerek.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption, final energy, primary energy, thermal retrofitting, thermo-modernization.
The paper presented the analysis of heat consumption for heating in multi-family residential buildings before and after thermal retrofitting. The analysis involved four groups of buildings, i.e., 43 buildings in total, located in various localities, belonging to one weather station. The predicted level of energy savings resulting from thermal retrofitting was achieved from the energy audits. The actual heat consumption, following the calculation into so-called external standard conditions, was obtained based on the readouts from heat-meters. For each building, the values of heat consumption over the periods of 6−10 years were read. The performance measurements involved the periods before, during, and after thermal retrofitting. The following statistical tests were used for data analysis: Wilcoxon−Mann−Whitney, Shapiro−Wilk, Bartlett, ANOVA, Kruskal−Wallis, Dunn and Holm post-hoc. The performed analyses showed that the mean value of energy savings predicted by audits reached 38.5% when... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distribution system, k-means clustering, Particle Swarm Optimization, smart inverter, symmetrical component, voltage unbalance.
This paper presents a compensation method for unbalanced voltage through active and reactive power control by utilizing a smart inverter that improves the voltage unbalance index and detects an unbalanced state of voltage magnitude and phase, and thus enhances power quality by minimizing the voltage imbalance. First of all, this paper presents an analysis of a mathematical approach, which demonstrates that the conventional voltage unbalanced factor (VUF) using the symmetrical component cannot correctly detect the imbalanced state from index equations; and by only minimizing the VUF value, it cannot establish a balanced condition for an unbalanced state of the voltage profile. This paper further discusses that intermittent photovoltaic (PV) output power and diversified load demand lead to an unexpected voltage imbalance. Therefore, considering the complexity of unbalanced voltage conditions, a specific load and an PV profile were extracted from big data and applied to the distribution s... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: collapsing method, mining seismicity, reactivated faults.
In rock mass disturbed by mining activity, distortions in the stress balance may lead to seismic energy being emitted in reactivated seismogenic structures. One way of increasing the imaging resolution of these seismically active structures is through relocation, which itself can be achieved using the cloud collapsing method. This method partially eliminates perturbations in the location of seismic energy sources concerning the actual positions of these sources. It enables events to be grouped into spatially ordered structures that may correspond to actual tectonic structures, such as fractures, fissures, or faults. We present the results of applying the collapsing method in mining seismology using a cloud of located events recorded during mining activity at one of the coalfaces in the Bobrek hard coal mine. The relocation procedure was applied to all the foci of events recorded during mining activity on face 3/503 between April 2009 and July 2010. In the relocated point cloud, two typ... [more]

Investigation of Pulverized Biomass and Coal Char Emissivity
Lukas Pörtner, Ying Gu, Martin Schiemann.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, emissivity, pulverized fuel, two-color pyrometry.
Current work presents an optical setup, its calibration and reference process and the first results from single particle emissivity measurements of pulverized biomass and coal fuel particles. In contrast to earlier attempts, the setup offers the possibility of emissivity measurements during the whole particle burn-off. A laser ignites a single particle, placed in the center of the setup. Two photomultipliers observe the emitted particle radiation in the visible range (550 nm and 700 nm) for temperature calculation, using two-color pyrometry. An InSb-detector records the emitted particle radiation between 2.4 µm and 5.5 µm, which is later used to calculate particle emissivity in this range. The conclusion of multiple particle measurements lead to decreasing particle emissivity with increasing temperature. For coal particles the emissivity decreases from 0.45 at 2300 K to 0.03 at 3400 K. Biomass char shows a similar trend with a decrease from 0.18 (2100 K) to 0.03 (2900 K).

Subject: Materials
Keywords: nitrogen compounds, pyrolysis, species distinguishment, thermal extraction, tobacco waste.
Alkaloids, typical nitrogen compounds, were found to be abundant in tobacco waste. The recovery of alkaloids from tobacco waste for biological pesticides could reduce the use of traditional chemical pesticides and avoid the pollution of farmland by the leaching of alkaloids from tobacco waste. Considering the fact that alkaloids can easily volatilize, thermal treatment is expected to be a potential technology to achieve the release and recovery of alkaloids from tobacco waste. For better understanding of conversion behavior of nitrogen-containing compounds in tobacco waste during thermal treatment, purge/trap-GC/MS (gas chromatography mass spectrometry), PY-GC/MS (pyrolysis-gas chromatography mass spectrometry), and fixed-bed/ATD-GC/MS (auto-thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry) were adopted to detect the ingredients and concentration of nitrogen-containing compounds in tobacco waste and/or volatiles. The results of purge/trap-GC/MS showed that nitrogen-containing co... [more]

Keywords: optimal settings, PVT hybrid solar collectors, Simulation, weather conditions.
The potential absorption of solar energy in photovoltaic thermal (PVT) hybrid solar collectors at different tilt angles was compared in the present study. The optimal tilt angles were tested in three variants: during 1 day, 1 year and a period of 30 years. Simulations were performed based on actual weather data for 30 years, including average hourly total radiation, insolation and air temperature. The apparent movement of the Sun across the sky, solar radiation properties, and the electrical and thermal efficiency of a PVT collector were also taken into account in the simulation model. The optimal orientation of the absorber surface was determined by solving an optimization task. The results of the study indicate that in the long-term perspective, the collector’s performance is maximized when the absorber is positioned toward the south at an elevation angle of 34.1°.

Keywords: average model, smart transformer, solid-state transformer.
Nowadays, many power electronics converters (PECs) are connected to the distribution grid, increasing the energy quality requirements in point of common coupling (PCC). One of the promising solutions to improve the energy quality is a smart transformer (ST) characterised by additional benefits in relation to the classical transformer throughout the possibility to implement advanced functionalities in PCC. However, the ST contains a lot of power semiconductor switches, making a problem for simulation software and the computer hardware when the control algorithm and all the ST functionalities are investigated. Usually, the solver algorithms in simulation software are used to create many linear time-varying states spaces, which increases exponentially with the number of switches. Therefore, very important is a model averaging process of the selected advanced ST topology, which is the aim of the paper. The proposed ST average model is compared with full switching models of each ST power co... [more]

This article proposes a new approach based on a bio-inspired Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA) that can significantly envisage with several issues for optimal allocation of distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) in Radial Distribution System (RDS). In the proposed method, optimal locations of the DSTATCOM are calculated by using the Loss Sensitivity Factor (LSF). The optimal size of the DSTATCOM is simulated by using the newly developed CSA. In the proposed method, load flow calculations are performed by using a fast and efficient backward/forward sweep algorithm. Here, the mathematically formed objective function of the proposed method is to reduce the total system power losses. Standard 33-bus and 69-bus systems have been used to show the effectiveness of the proposed CSA-based optimization method in the RDS with different load models. The simulated results confirm that the optimal allocation of DSTATCOM plays a significant role in power loss minimization and enhanced voltage profile... [more]

Mathieu Béland, Evelyne Thiffault, Julie Barrette, Warren Mabee.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: costs, forest biomass, natural disturbances, silviculture, wood pellets.
Natural disturbances are common in Canadian boreal managed forests. For example, during and after insect epidemics, foresters must deal with significant amounts of degraded or dead wood that cannot be processed into sawn timber or pulp. Bioenergy could be an alternative pathway for this wood. A case study in Quebec (Canada) was used to evaluate the profitability of pellet production for bioenergy using degraded trees from insect epidemics. A bioenergy scenario was simulated in which degraded trees were harvested for bioenergy alongside sound wood for timber and pulp. This scenario was compared to a reference scenario in which degraded trees were left on cutovers. Using wood pellets as a case study, the results showed that at current market prices, harvesting degraded trees for pellet production is not as profitable as leaving them in the forest. Nevertheless, the overall forest operations for procuring wood for timber and pulp were still profitable, even with very high degradation leve... [more]

Keywords: actuator, analytical model, auto-tuner, electro-pneumatic final control element, fluid mechanics, heterogenic tuning, heuristics, PID controller, positioner, single action pneumatic actuator.
The main concept is to design the novel autotuner in a way that it will introduce benefits that arise from the effect of the fusion of the quantitative and qualitative knowledge gained from identification experiments, long-time expertise, and theoretical findings. The novelty of this approach is in the manner in which the expert heuristic knowledge is used for the development of an easy-to-use and time-efficient tuning process. In the proposed approach, the positioner simply learns, mimics, and follows up the tuning process that is performed by an experienced human operator. The major strength of this approach is that all parameters of positioner PID controller can be estimated by only identifying one single parameter that is the effective time constant of the pneumatic actuator. The elaborated autotuning algorithm is experimentally examined with different commercially available pneumatic actuators and control valves. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed autotuning approa... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 4H-SiC, body diode, double trench, free-wheeling diode, heterojunction diode, MOSFET, reverse recovery, switching loss.
In this study, a novel 4H-SiC double-trench metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) with a side wall heterojunction diode is proposed and investigated by conducting numerical technology computer-aided design simulations. The junction between P+ polysilicon and the N-drift layer forming a heterojunction diode on the side wall of the source trench region suppresses the operation of the PiN body diode during the reverse conduction state. Therefore, the injected minority carriers are completely suppressed, reducing the reverse recovery current by 73%, compared to the PiN body diodes. The switching characteristics of the proposed MOSFET using the heterojunction diode as a freewheeling diode was compared to the power module with a conventional MOSFET and an external diode as a freewheeling diode. It is shown that the switching performance of the proposed structure exhibits equivalent characteristics compared to the power module, enabling the elimination of an external free... [more]

Due to the new green energy policies, district heating companies are being increasingly encouraged to exploit power-to-heat assets, e.g., heat pumps and electric boilers, in their distribution networks besides the traditional central combined heat and power units. The increased utilization of these assets will generate a more complex interaction between power distribution grids and district heating networks including markets for provision of ancillary services. Enabling the participation of power-to-heat units in the ancillary service markets, e.g., frequency reserves, may increase the revenue streams for assets’ owners. However, some technical challenges must first be addressed, including optimization of portfolios of assets that accounts for ancillary service markets, new coordination and operational schemes for portfolio of assets, increase data exchange and interactions with transmission system operators, and new local control schemes for units. Elastic and Frictional Properties of Fault Zones in Reservoir-Scale Hydro-Mechanical Models—A Sensitivity Study
Torben Treffeisen, Andreas Henk.
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: faults, finite element modelling, hydro-mechanical modelling, reservoir.
The proper representation of faults in coupled hydro-mechanical reservoir models is challenged, among others, by the difference between the small-scale heterogeneity of fault zones observed in nature and the large size of the calculation cells in numerical simulations. In the present study we use a generic finite element (FE) model with a volumetric fault zone description to examine what effect the corresponding upscaled material parameters have on pore pressures, stresses, and deformation within and surrounding the fault zone. Such a sensitivity study is important as the usually poor data base regarding specific hydro-mechanical fault properties as well as the upscaling process introduces uncertainties, whose impact on the modelling results is otherwise difficult to assess. Altogether, 87 scenarios with different elastic and plastic parameter combinations were studied. Numerical modelling results indicate that Young’s modulus and cohesion assigned to the fault zone have the strongest... [more]
