Validation and Evaluation of an Estimation Method for Deep Thermal Structures Using an Activity Index in Major Geothermal Fields in Northeastern Japan
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: brittle–ductile transition, geothermal energy, geothermal exploration, geothermal mapping, hydrothermal convection, seismicity, supercritical geothermal resources
A considerable number of rock bodies with varying percentages of supercritical fluid exist around the brittle−ductile transition (BDT) zone at a depth of several kilometers from the surface of the Earth, in northeastern Japan. As the BDT zone in the granitic basement of the continental crust is estimated to occur at about 380 °C, the identification of the depth corresponding to 380 °C is important to utilize the thermal energy inside the “supercritical geothermal systems”. In this study, we focused on an estimation method to determine the depth of the isothermal layer corresponding to 380 °C, using the activity index (AI) obtained from the maximum-temperature data of the geothermal wells and hot springs. The thermal profiles of deep and hot exploration boreholes and the hypocentral distribution of natural earthquakes were used to evaluate the characteristics and accuracy of the deep thermal structure, using the activity index. The estimated depth corresponding to 380 °C tended to be hi... [more]

Application of Microemulsion Systems in the Formulation of Biodegradable Pre-Flush Fluid for Primary Cementing
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cementing, cleanup fluid, filter cake, glycerol, microemulsion
Oil well cleanup fluids (pre-flushes) are intermediate fluids pumped ahead of the cement slurry; they are able to clean the well walls by removing the filter cake formed by the drilling fluid, and leave the surface water-wet. This work’s main objective was to use biodegradable microemulsion systems as cleanup fluids in order to reduce the environmental impact. Three microemulsion systems were formulated, each composed of an oil phase, a surfactant and three different aqueous phases: glycerol, glycerol:water (mass ratio 1:1), and fresh water. The results show that all microemulsion systems were effective with 100% filter cake removal, with a removal time of less than 60 s. The wettability test and fluid compatibility analyses exhibited advantageous performances, without phase separation, variations in viscosity, gelation, or flocculation. The compressive strength and X-ray diffractometry (XRD) analysis showed the influence of the glycerol on the cement slurry properties, with the compre... [more]

On the Investigation of Microstructured Charcoal as an ANFO Blasting Enhancer
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ANFO, charcoal, morphology, SEM
In this study, we examined the influence of microstructured charcoal (MC) when added to ammonium nitrate fuel oil (ANFO) samples. We performed a study that investigated ANFOs structure, crystallinity, and morphology by utilizing infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. MC characteristics were probed by Raman spectroscopy and SEM analysis. SEM analysis indicated how fuel oil (FO) covered ammonium nitrate prill. Moreover, the surface of the MC was covered by specific microfibers and microtubes. The disordered graphitic structure of the MC was also confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Simulation of blasting properties revealed that the addition of MC should decrease blasting parameters like heat explosion, detonation pressure, and detonation temperature. However, the obtained differences are negligible in comparison with the regular ANFO. All analyses indicated that MC was a good candidate as an additive to ANFO.

An Overview of Modelling Techniques and Control Strategies for Modular Multilevel Matrix Converters
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC-AC conversion, modular multilevel converters, Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter
The Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter is a relatively new power converter topology appropriate for high-power Alternating Current (AC) to AC purposes. Several publications in the literature have highlighted the converter capabilities such as modularity, control flexibility, the possibility to include redundancy, and power quality. Nevertheless, the topology and control of this converter are relatively complex to design and implement, considering that the converter has a large number of cells and floating capacitors. Therefore multilayer nested control systems are required to maintain the capacitor voltage of each cell regulated within an acceptable range. There are no other review papers where the modelling, control systems and applications of the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter are discussed. Hence, this paper aims to facilitate further research by presenting the technology related to the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter, focusing on a comprehensive revision of the modelling... [more]

Decision Making Support for Local Authorities Choosing the Method for Siting of In-City EV Charging Stations
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distribution of charging stations, electric vehicle, electromobility, evaluation, local authorities, minimum state of charge, range anxiety, routing, spatial analysis, travel planner
Development of electromobility in urban areas requires an appropriate level of vehicle charging infrastructure. Numerous methods for siting of charging stations have been developed to date, and they appear to be delivering diverse outcomes for the same area, which is why local authorities face the problem of choosing the right station layout. The solution proposed in this article is to use a travel planner to evaluate the distribution of charging stations over the area of a metropolis. The decision making support is achieved by determining optimal travel routes for electric vehicles according to their initial state of charge for the three selected station siting methods. The evaluation focused on the following three aspects: (1) number of travels that cannot be made (due to the lack of a charging station at a certain distance around the start point), (2) extension of the travel caused by the need to recharge the vehicle on-route, and (3) additional energy consumption by electric vehicl... An Equivalent Heat Transfer Model Instead of Wind Speed Measuring for Dynamic Thermal Rating of Transmission Lines
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: conductor ampacity, dynamic thermal rating, finite element method, heat loss, overhead conductor, weather parameters
With the increase in electricity demand, the ampacity calculation based on the dynamic thermal rating (DTR) technology is increasingly significant for assessing and improving the power transfer capacity of the existing overhead conductors. However, the DTR models now available present some inadequacies in measurement techniques related to wind speed. Therefore, it is essential to propose a new model instead of wind speed measuring in DTR technology. In this paper, the influence analysis of various weather parameters on the conductor ampacity is carried out by using the real weather data. Based on the analysis, it is confirmed that the impact of wind speed is significant, especially in the case of the low wind speed. Moreover, an equivalent heat transfer (EHT) model for DTR technology is proposed instead of wind speed measuring. For this EHT model, the calculation of conductor ampacity is realized through investigating the correlation of heat losses between the heating aluminum (Al) bal... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery storage, Energy, logistics, Optimization, photovoltaics
The United States Air Force has implemented a dispersed air base strategy to enhance mission effectiveness for near-peer conflicts. Asset dispersal places many smaller bases across a wide geographic area, which increases resupply requirements and logistical complexity. Hybrid energy systems reduce resupply requirements through sustainable, off-grid energy production. This paper presents a novel hybrid energy renewable delivery system (HERDS) model capable of (1) selecting the optimal hybrid energy system design that meets demand at the lowest net present cost and (2) optimizing the delivery of the selected system using existing Air Force cargo aircraft. The novelty of the model’s capabilities is displayed using Clark Air Base, Philippines as a case study. The HERDS model selected an optimal configuration consisting of a 676-kW photovoltaic array, an 1846-kWh battery system, and a 200-kW generator. This hybrid energy system predicts a 54% reduction in cost and an 88% reduction in fuel u... [more]

Effect of Impulse Polarity on a New Grounding Device with Spike Rods (GDSR)
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: earthing systems, electrode geometry, fast-impulses, high-magnitude currents and impulse polarity
The characterizations of grounding systems subjected to high impulse conditions are known to be dependent on the polarity, current to peak time and discharge time, as well as the electrical properties of the soil, and the grounding electrodes themselves. It is therefore important to investigate the behavior of grounding systems under high impulse conditions under negative impulse polarity, and compare it with positive impulse polarity results. Experimental test results for the same grounding systems installed with various earth electrodes at several sites under positive impulse polarity have previously been presented. In comparison, this paper presents the results of negative impulse polarity injected on the same grounding systems. It is found that a significant difference between positive and negative impulse polarities is observed for the grounding systems installed at high soil resistivity.

Reactant Feeding Strategy Analysis of Sodium Borohydride Hydrolysis Reaction Systems for Instantaneous Hydrogen Generation
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: feeding strategy, hydrogen-on-demand, hydrolysis reaction, sodium borohydride, start-up
In this study, the operational procedure of an experiment and simulation for a hydrogen-on-demand system using sodium borohydride hydrolysis is proposed. For an isothermal operating condition of a packed-bed reactor, the dynamic response between the input NaBH4 feed (FNaBH) and the output hydrogen flowrate (FH) of the reactor can be analytically derived and is a first-order transfer function. The time constant of this transfer function is a function of the reciprocal of the product of the reaction rate constant and the catalyst weight into the liquid volume of the reactor. The kinetic parameters of Co-B/IR-200 catalysts are regressed from the experimental NaBH4 hydrolysis reaction. The result shows a 30 °C operating temperature increase (from 40 °C till 70 °C) can shorten the dynamic response time of the hydrogen generation rate by around two-thirds. From theoretical derivation, a feeding strategy which supplies the combination of impulse function and step function of the NaBH4 feed fl... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: congestion management, controlled charging, delayed charging, electric vehicles, peak shaving, renewable energy sources, uncontrolled charging, V2B, V2G, V2H, valley filling
There is a continuous and fast increase in electric vehicles (EVs) adoption in many countries due to the reduction of EVs prices, governments’ incentives and subsidies on EVs, the need for energy independence, and environmental issues. It is expected that EVs will dominate the private cars market in the coming years. These EVs charge their batteries from the power grid and may cause severe effects if not managed properly. On the other hand, they can provide many benefits to the power grid and get revenues for EV owners if managed properly. The main contribution of the article is to provide a review of potential negative impacts of EVs charging on electric power systems mainly due to uncontrolled charging and how through controlled charging and discharging those impacts can be reduced and become even positive impacts. The impacts of uncontrolled EVs charging on the increase of peak demand, voltage deviation from the acceptable limits, phase unbalance due to the single-phase chargers, ha... [more]

Pore-Scale Analysis of Condensate Blockage Mitigation by Wettability Alteration
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compositional modeling, condensate blockage, pore-network modeling, wettability alteration
Liquid banking in the near wellbore region can lessen significantly the production from gas reservoirs. As reservoir rocks commonly consist of liquid-wet porous media, they are prone to liquid trapping following well liquid invasion and/or condensate dropout in gas-condensate systems. For this reason, wettability alteration from liquid to gas-wet has been investigated in the past two decades as a permanent gas flow enhancement solution. Numerous experiments suggest flow improvement for immiscible gas-liquid flow in wettability altered cores. However, due to experimental limitations, few studies evaluate the method’s performance for condensing flows, typical of gas-condensate reservoirs. In this context, we present a compositional pore-network model for gas-condensate flow under variable wetting conditions. Different condensate modes and flow patterns based on experimental observations were implemented in the model so that the effects of wettability on condensing flow were represented.... [more]

Keywords: exhaust emissions and spark-ignition engine, lipid bio-oils, performance, pyrogasoline
The partial replacement of fossil fuels by biofuels contributes to a reduction of CO2 emissions, alleviating the greenhouse effect and climate changes. Furthermore, fuels produced from waste biomass materials have no impact on agricultural land use and reduce deposition of such wastes in landfills. In this paper we evaluate the addition of pyrolysis biogasoline (pyrogasoline) as an additive for fossil gasoline. Pyrogasoline was produced from used cooking oils unfit to produce biodiesel. This study was based on a set of engine tests using binary and ternary mixtures of gasoline with 0, 2.5, and 5% pyrogasoline and ethanol. The use of ternary blends of gasoline and two different biofuels was tested with the purpose of achieving optimal combustion conditions and lower emissions, taking advantage of synergistic effects due to the different properties and chemical compositions of those biofuels. Accounting for Magnetic Saturation Effects in Complex Multi-harmonic Model of Induction Machine
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: effective parameters, finite element method, induction motor, magnetic permeability
Computations of quasi-dynamic electromagnetic field of induction machines using the complex magnetic vector potential require the use of the so-called effective magnetization curves, i.e., such in which the magnetic permeability is proportional to the amplitudes of magnetic flux density B or magnetic field strength H, not their instantaneous values. There are several definitions of that parameter mentioned in the literature provided for the case when B or H are monoharmonic. In this paper, seven different methods of determining the effective magnetization curves are compared in relation to the use of a field-circuit multi-harmonic model of an induction machine. The accuracy of each method was assessed by computing the performance characteristics of a solid-rotor induction machine. One new definition of the effective permeability was also introduced, being a function of multiple variables dependent on amplitudes of all the harmonics considered. The analyses demonstrated that the best pr... [more]

Power Loss Analysis of Solar Photovoltaic Integrated Model Predictive Control Based On-Grid Inverter
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: inverter, Model Predictive Control, on-grid PV inverter, photovoltaic systems, power system analysis computing, predictive control, predictive models
This paper presents a finite control-set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) based technique to reduce the switching loss and frequency of the on-grid PV inverter by incorporating a switching frequency term in the cost function of the model predictive control (MPC). In the proposed MPC, the control objectives (current and switching frequency) select an optimal switching state for the inverter by minimizing a predefined cost function. The two control objectives are combined with a weighting factor. A trade-off between the switching frequency (average) and total harmonic distortion (THD) of the current was utilized to determine the value of the weighting factor. The switching, conduction, and harmonic losses were determined at the selected value of the weighting factor for both the proposed and conventional FCS-MPC and compared. The system was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink, and a small-scale hardware prototype was built to realize the system and verify the proposal. Considering only 0.25%... [more]

Keywords: bioremediation, biosurfactant, environmental biotechnology, soil, surfactant
Petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals and agricultural pesticides have mutagenic, carcinogenic, immunotoxic and teratogenic effects and cause drastic changes in soil physicochemical and microbiological characteristics, thereby representing a serious danger to health and environment. Therefore, soil pollution urgently requires the application of a series of physicochemical and biological techniques and treatments to minimize the extent of damage. Among them, bioremediation has been shown to be an alternative that can offer an economically viable way to restore polluted areas. Due to the difficulty in choosing the best bioremediation technique for each type of pollutant and the paucity of literature on soil bioremediation enhanced by the use of specific additives, we reviewed the main in situ and ex situ methods, their current properties and applications. Electromagnetic Shielding Effect of a Canned Permanent Magnet Motor
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: can loss, canned electrical motor, eddy current, permanent magnet motor, shielding effect
Due to use of the metallic cans in the air gap, the electromagnetic shielding effect is formed, which is the prominent characteristic of the canned motor. In the flux field, eddy current induction occurs on both cans that thus affects the characteristic of the air gap flux field, and generates a loss that is the highest loss of the canned motor. In this paper, a combination method is proposed and stressed to analyze the shielding effect, based on a typical canned permanent magnet synchronous motor. First, the dq vector decomposition of the eddy current is studied. Second, the effect of the load angle on the loss distribution is studied. Finally, compared with the ordinary motor, the feature of can loss due to rotor speed and conductivity variation is shown. The three-dimensional finite element method is adopted, considering the end effect.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, circulating fluidized bed, co-combustion, flexibility, refuse derived fuel, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Co-combustion of biomass and solid fuels from wastes in existing highly efficient power plants is a low-cost solution that can be applied quickly and with low effort to mitigate climate change. Circulating fluidized bed combustion has several advantages when it comes to co-combustion, such as high fuel flexibility. The operational flexibility of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) co-combustion is investigated in a 1 MWth pilot plant. Straw pellets and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) are co-combusted with lignite at full load and part loads. This study focusses on the impact on the hydrodynamic conditions in the fluidized bed, on the heat transfer to the water/steam side of the boiler, and on the flue gas composition. The study demonstrates the flexibility of CFB combustion for three low-rank fuels that differ greatly in their properties. Impact of First Tower Earthing Resistance on Fast Front Back-Flashover in a 66 kV Transmission System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: back-flashover, fast front transient study, footing resistance, insulation coordination, lightning impulse withstand voltage, PSCAD/EMTDC
Lightning stroke on a transmission tower structure is one of the major reasons that results in high voltages at the tower arms due to the excessive lightning current flowing through the transmission tower to earth. The Surge voltage seen at the tower cross arm on the first tower close to a substation is the worst case. If this voltage is higher than the withstand level of the insulator string, the insulation of substation equipment will be exposed to transient over-voltage called fast front back-flashover (FFBF). The peak of this transient overvoltage is affected by the value of the system’s earthing resistance. This paper studies the effect of reducing the grounding resistance of both the surge arrestor (SA) and the first transmission line tower adjacent to a 66 kV substation on FFBF. Three case studies using PSCAD/EMTDC software are presented to simulate the variation of the potential sire at the substation equipment with different resistance values for the first tower and SA earthin... Keywords: Biofuels, calcium carbonate, hydrolysis, lignocellulosic biomass, sludge, sugars
Paper mill sludge (PMS) solids are predominantly comprised of cellulosic fibers and fillers rejected during the pulping or paper making process. Most sludges are dewatered and discharged into landfills or land spread at a cost to the mill; creating large economic and environmental burdens. This lignocellulosic residual stream can be used as a source of sugars for microbial fermentation to renewable chemicals. The aim of this study was to determine the possibility of converting mill sludge to sugars and then fermentation to either isoprene or ethanol. Chemical analysis indicated that the cellulosic fiber composition between 28 to 68% and hemicellulose content ranged from 8.4 to 10.7%. Calcium carbonate concentration in the sludge ranged from 0.4 to 34%. Sludge samples were enzyme hydrolyzed to convert cellulose fibers to glucose, percent conversion ranged from 10.5 to 98%. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Engle–Granger error correction, market integration, Natural Gas, Qatar, swing supplier
This study explores the international natural gas market integration using the Engle−Granger cointegration and error correction model. Previous studies have suggested that liquefied natural gas (LNG) and oil-linked pricing with a long-term contract have played key roles in gas market integration, especially between European and Asian markets. There is, however, little discussion of the role of the emergence of a swing supplier. A swing supplier, e.g., Qatar or Russia, is flexible to unexpected changes in supply and demand in both European and Asian markets and adapts the gas production/exports swiftly to meet the changes in the markets. Qatar has been a swing supplier since 2005 in the global natural gas market. In 2009, Qatar’s global LNG export share reached above 30% and has remained around 25% since then. Empirical results indirectly support that the emergence of a swing supplier may tighten market integration between Europe and Asia. The swing supplier may have accelerated the deg... [more]
