April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combined heat and power, district heating system, energy and exergy analysis, hot water tank, sensible thermal energy storage
The paper contains a simplified energy and exergy analysis of pumps and pipelines system integrated with Thermal Energy Storage (TES). The analysis was performed for a combined heat and power plant (CHP) supplying heat to the District Heating System (DHS). The energy and exergy efficiency for the Block Part of the Siekierki CHP Plant in Warsaw was estimated. CHP Plant Siekierki is the largest CHP plant in Poland and the second largest in Europe. The energy and exergy analysis was executed for the three different values of ambient temperature. It is according to operation of the plant in different seasons: winter season (the lowest ambient temperature Tex = −20 °C, i.e., design point conditions), the intermediate season (average ambient temperature Tex = 1 °C), and summer (average ambient temperature Tex = 15 °C). The presented results of the analysis make it possible to identify the places of the greatest exergy destruction in the pumps and pipelines system with TES, and thus give the... [more]

Sliding Mode Control for Micro Turbojet Engine Using Turbofan Power Ratio as Control Law
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: control, gas turbine engine, micro turbojet, Simulation, sliding mode control, turbofan power ratio
The interest in turbojet engines was emerging in the past years due to their simplicity. The purpose of this article is to investigate sliding mode control (SMC) for a micro turbojet engine based on an unconventional compound thermodynamic parameter called Turbofan Power Ratio (TPR) and prove its advantage over traditional linear methods and thrust parameters. Based on previous research by the authors, TPR can be applied to single stream turbojet engines as it varies proportionally to thrust, thus it is suitable as control law. The turbojet is modeled by a linear, parameter-varying structure, and variable structure sliding mode control has been selected to control the system, as it offers excellent disturbance rejection and provides robustness against discrepancies between mathematical model and real plant as well. Both model and control system have been created in MATLAB® Simulink®, data from real measurement have been taken to evaluate control system performance. The same assessment... [more]

Analysis of the Energy Balance of Constructions Based on Wood during Their Use in Connection with CO2 Emissions
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
In the construction industry, it is the material production phase and the use phase of buildings’ life cycles that represent the greatest environmental burden. The presented research focused on wood constructions during their use phase. The primary objective of the research was to determine the amount of CO2 produced during the operation of specific wood constructions in connection with the energy demand for their heating. A correlation analysis of selected parameters revealed a statistically significant correlation between heating medium type and energy demand for heating (p = −0.5773) and between heating medium type and amount of CO2 produced (p = 0.4796). A more detailed analysis showed that, in terms of the average energy demand for heating, the column constructions were the most efficient among the compared construction systems, regardless of the energy standard. Similar findings were obtained for annual CO2 production in connection with the average energy demand for heating. The... [more]

The Impact of Heat Exchangers’ Constructions on the Melting and Solidification Time of Phase Change Materials
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat exchanger, heat pipe, heat transfer enhancement, latent heat thermal energy storage, multiple phase change materials, phase change material, thermal energy storage
An application of latent heat thermal energy storage systems with phase change materials seems to be unavoidable in the present world. The latent heat thermal energy storage systems allow for storing excessive heat during low demand and then releasing it during peak demand. However, a phase change material is only one of the components of a latent heat thermal energy storage system. The second part of the latent heat thermal energy storage is a heat exchanger that allows heat transfer between a heat transfer fluid and a phase change material. Thus, the main aim of this review paper is to present and systematize knowledge about the heat exchangers used in the latent heat thermal energy storage systems. Furthermore, the operating parameters influencing the phase change time of phase change materials in the heat exchangers, and the possibilities of accelerating the phase change are discussed. Based on the literature reviewed, it is found that the phase change time of phase change material... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: Biofuels, Biomass, climate adaptation, climate mitigation, e-vehicles, energy justice, energy poverty, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar energy, wind energy
Concern for climate change is one of the drivers of new, transitional energy policies oriented towards economic growth and energy security, along with reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and preservation of biodiversity. Since 2010, the Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) has been publishing annual Global Landscape of Climate Finance reports. According to these reports, US$3660 billion has been spent on global climate change projects over the period 2011−2018. Fifty-five percent of this expenditure has gone to wind and solar energy. According to world energy reports, the contribution of wind and solar to world energy consumption has increased from 0.5% to 3% over this period. Meanwhile, coal, oil, and gas continue to supply 85% of the world’s energy consumption, with hydroelectricity and nuclear providing most of the remainder. With this in mind, we consider the potential engineering challenges and environmental and socioeconomic impacts of the main energy sources (old and new). We find... [more]

An Agent-Based Approach for the Planning of Distribution Grids as a Socio-Technical System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: agent-based simulation, behavioral economics, Planning, power distribution, socio-technical systems
Recent developments, such as smart metering, distributed energy resources, microgrids, and energy storage, have led to an exponential increase in system complexity and have emphasized the need to include customer behavior and social and cultural backgrounds in planning activities. This paper analyzes how emergent behavior in electricity consumption can affect the planning of distribution grids with a smart grid vision. For this, an agent-based model that uses insights from the field of behavioral economics to differentiate four consumer categories (high income, low income, middle class, and early adopters) was used. The model was coupled with a real distribution feeder and customer load curve data, and the results showed that heterogeneity of customer’s preferences, values, and behavior led to very distinct load growth patterns. The results emphasize the relevance of modeling customer’s behavioral aspects in planning increasingly complex power systems.

Outlook for Direct Use of Sunflower and Castor Oils as Biofuels in Compression Ignition Diesel Engines, Being Part of Diesel/Ethyl Acetate/Straight Vegetable Oil Triple Blends
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biofuels, castor oil, diesel engine, engine power output, ethyl acetate, soot emissions, straight vegetable oils, sunflower oil, vegetable oil blends
Today, biofuels are indispensable in the implementation of fossil fuels replacement processes. This study evaluates ethyl acetate (EA) as a solvent of two straight vegetable oils (SVOs), castor oil (CO), and sunflower oil (SO), in order to obtain EA/SVO double blends that can be used directly as biofuels, or along with fossil diesel (D), in the current compression-ignition (C.I.) engines. The interest of EA as oxygenated additive lies not only in its low price and renewable character, but also in its very attractive properties such as low kinematic viscosity, reasonable energy density, high oxygen content, and rich cold flow properties. Revelant fuel properties of EA/SVO double and D/EA/SVO triple blends have been object of study including kinematic viscosity, pour point (PP), cloud point (CP), calorific value (CV), and cetane number (CN). The suitability of using these blends as fuels has been tested by running them on a diesel engine electric generator, analyzing their effect on engi... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: axial compression performance, enhanced area, finite element analysis, multi-cavity steel tube concrete shear wall, non-enhanced area
In order to study the axial compression performance of the T-shaped multi-cavity concrete-filled steel tube shear wall, first, three specimens were designed to perform the axial compression test. Then three-dimensional finite element analysis by the ABAQUS software was used to obtain the axial bearing capacity of the shear wall with different parameters. According to the results of the finite element model, the computational diagram in the limit state was obtained. The diagram was simplified into the core concrete in the non-enhanced area that was not constrained by the steel tube and the core concrete in the enhanced area that was uniformly constrained by the steel tube. Finally, a new practical equation for calculating the axial bearing capacity of a multi-cavity concrete-filled steel tubular shear wall was deduced and proposed based on the theory of ultimate equilibrium. The calculation results of the proposed equation were in good agreement with the finite element results, and the... [more]

Analysis of the Existing Barriers for the Market Development of Power to Hydrogen (P2H) in Italy
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrolysis, green hydrogen, Hydrogen, hydrogen grid, power to hydrogen, smart grid
New technological solutions are required to control the impact of the increasing presence of renewable energy sources connected to the electric grid that are characterized by unpredictable production (i.e., wind and solar energy). Energy storage is becoming essential to stabilize the grid when a mismatch between production and demand occurs. Among the available solutions, Power to Hydrogen (P2H) is one of the most attractive options. However, despite the potential, many barriers currently hinder P2H market development. The literature reports general barriers and strategies to overcome them, but a specific analysis is fundamental to identifying how these barriers concretely arise in national and regional frameworks, since tailored solutions are needed to foster the development of P2H local market. The paper aims to identify and to analyze the existing barriers for P2H market uptake in Italy. The paper shows how several technical, regulatory and economic issues are still unsolved, result... A Coordinated Dispatching Model Considering Generation and Operation Reserve in Wind Power-Photovoltaic-Pumped Storage System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coordinated dispatching, non-parametric kernel density estimation, operation reserve, pumped storage, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, scenario method
Large-scale grid integration of renewable energy increases the uncertainty and volatility of power systems, which brings difficulties to output planning and reserve decision-making of power system units. In this paper, we innovatively combined the non-parametric kernel density estimation method and scenario method to describe the uncertainty of renewable energy outputs, and obtained a representative set of renewable energy output scenarios. In addition, we proposed a new method to determine the reserve capacity demand. Further, we derived the quantitative relationship between the reserve demand and the power system reliability index, which was used as the constraint condition of a day-ahead power generation dispatch. Finally, a coordinated dispatching model of power generation and reserve was established, which had the lowest penalty for curtailment of wind power and photovoltaic, as well as the lowest total operating cost for thermal power units, gas power units, and pumped storage po... Cost of Equity of Coal-Fired Power Generation Projects in Poland: Its Importance for the Management of Decision-Making Process
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cash-flows, coal-fired power generation, cost of capital, discount rate, economic evaluation, investments
Our knowledge of discount rates plays an important role both in the discounted cash flow decision-making process and in the later phases of a project’s lifetime. It is useful than both for management and cash-flow monitoring purposes at operating stages. Investors putting money into power generation projects expect an appropriate rate of return to compensate them for a minimum acceptable real return available in the market (risk-free rate of interest) and the project’s specific risk. Due to its essential nature in the financial and economic evaluation of projects (it is the only parameter that reflects the risk), it is reasonable to assume that investors would also be interested in constituent components of that indicator. The discount rate is one parameter in the discounted cash flow analysis that takes into account the risk of a venture. Further, the previous research in this area has focused mainly on the dimension of this variable, and the structure of this parameter has not been d... [more]

Robust Linear Control of Boost and Buck-Boost DC-DC Converters in Micro-Grids with Constant Power Loads
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Buck-Boost DC-DC converters, constant power loads, DC micro-grids, Model Predictive Control, PID Type-III voltage-mode compensation, reference governor
Power distribution systems nowadays are highly penetrated by renewable energy sources, and this explains the dominant role of power electronic converters in their operation. However, the presence of multiple power electronic conversion units gives rise to the so-called phenomenon of Constant Power Loads (CPLs), which poses a serious stability challenge in the overall operation of a DC micro-grid. This article addresses the problem of enhancing the stability margin of boost and buck-boost DC-DC converters employed in DC micro-grids under uncertain mixed load conditions. This is done with a recently proposed methodology that relies on a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) controller, comprised by a voltage-mode Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) (Type-III) primary controller and a reference governor (RG) secondary controller. This complementary scheme adjusts the imposed voltage reference dynamically and is designed in an optimal fashion via the Model Predictive Control (MPC) methodology b... [more]

Effects of Ball Milling and TiF3 Addition on the Dehydrogenation Temperature of Ca(BH4)2 Polymorphs
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: additives, ball milling, calcium borohydride, differential scanning calorimetry, hydrogen storage, kinetics of the hydrogen desorption, polymorphs, powder X-ray diffraction, reaction pathways, vibrational spectroscopy
The changes introduced by both ball milling and the addition of small amounts of TiF3 in the kinetics of the hydrogen desorption of three different Ca(BH4)2 polymorphs (α, β and γ) have been systematically investigated. The samples with different polymorphic contents, before and after the addition of TiF3, were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy. The hydrogen desorption reaction pathways were monitored by differential scanning calorimetry. The hydrogen desorption of Ca(BH4)2 depends strongly on the amount of coexistent α, β and γ polymorphs as well as additional ball milling and added TiF3 to the sample. The addition of TiF3 increased the hydrogen desorption rate without significant dissociation of the fluoride. The combination of an α-Ca(BH4)2 rich sample with 10 mol% of TiF3 and 8 h of milling led to up to 27 °C decrease of the hydrogen desorption peak temperature.

The Effect of the Axial Heat Transfer on Space Charge Accumulation Phenomena in HVDC Cables
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: HVDC cables, space charge, thermal rating
To date, it has been widespread accepted that the presence of space charge within the dielectric of high voltage direct current (HVDC) cables is one of the most relevant issues that limits the growing diffusion of this technology and its use at higher voltages. One of the reasons that leads to the establishment of space charge within the insulation of cables is the temperature dependence of its conductivity. Many researchers have demonstrated that high temperature drop over the insulation layer can lead to the reversal of the electric field profile. In certain conditions, this can over-stress the insulation during polarity reversal (PR) and transient over voltages (TOV) events accelerating the ageing of the dielectric material. However, the reference standards for the thermal rating of cables are mainly thought for alternating current (AC) cables and do not adequately take into account the effects related to high thermal drops over the insulation. In particular, the difference in tempe... [more]

Vacuum arc commutation is an important process in natural-commutate hybrid direct current (DC) circuit breaker (NHCB) interruption, as the duration of vacuum arc commutation will directly affect the arcing time and interrupting time of NHCB. In this paper, the vacuum arc commutation model of NHCB was established by simplifying solid-state switch (SS) and vacuum arc voltage. State-Space Modeling Techniques of Emerging Grid-Connected Converters
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Component Connection Method, power electronics-based systems, stability analysis, state-space methods, virtual synchronous generators
In modern power electronics-based power systems, accurate modeling is necessary in order to analyze stability and the interaction between the different elements, which are connected to it. State space modeling seems a valid approach to study the modes of a certain system and their correlation with its states. Unfortunately, this approach may require complicated calculations and it is difficult to model advanced or emerging control techniques for grid-tied converters, such as cascaded controllers (e.g., voltage and current) and virtual synchronous generators (VSGs). Moreover, this approach does not allow an easy reconfiguration of the modeled system by adding, removing of modifying certain elements. To solve such problems, this paper presents a step-by-step approach to the converter modeling based on the Component Connection Method (CCM). The CCM is explained in detail and a practical example is given, by modeling one exemplary VSG model available in the literature. The obtained model i... [more]

More than 2 million houses in Australia have installed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems; however, apartment buildings have adopted a low percentage of solar PV and battery storage installations. Given that grid usage reduction through PV and battery storage is a primary objective in most residential buildings, apartments have not yet fully benefited from installations of such systems. This research presents shared microgrid configurations for three apartment buildings with PV and battery storage and evaluates the reduction in grid electricity usage by analyzing self-sufficiency. The results reveal that the three studied sites at White Gum Valley achieved an overall self-sufficiency of more than 60%. Owing to the infancy of the shared solar and battery storage market for apartment complexes and lack of available data, this study fills the research gap by presenting preliminary quantitative findings from implementation in apartment buildings.

Investigation of the Spray Development Process of Gasoline-Biodiesel Blended Fuel Sprays in a Constant Volume Chamber
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: atomization, fuel blending, long distance microscopy, shadowgraph, spray cone angle, spray tip penetration
This study investigated gasoline−biodiesel blended fuel (GB) subjected to a fuel spray development process on macroscopic and microscopic scales. The four tested fuels were neat gasoline and gasoline containing biodiesel (5%, 20%, and 40% by volume) at three different ratios. The initial spray near the nozzle revealed that the spray penetration and spray tip velocity both decreased with decreasing biodiesel blending ratio. In addition, the different spray tip velocities at the start of spraying result in different atomization regimes between the fuels. The GB fuels with a low biodiesel blending ratio were disadvantaged in terms of spray atomization due to their lower spray penetration and tip velocity. The macroscopic spray penetration changes were similar to those observed in the microscopic spray. The fuel with the lower biodiesel blending ratio had a larger spray cone angle, indicating increased radial spray dispersion.
