April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agricultural residue, Biofuels, Biomass, bioproducts, food residue, hydrolysate, microalgae
The growing demand of microalgal biomass for biofuels, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, animal feed, and other bioproducts has created a strong interest in developing low-cost sustainable cultivation media and methods. Agricultural and food residues represent low-cost abundant and renewable sources of organic carbon that can be valorized for the cultivation of microalgae, while converting them from an environmental liability to an industrial asset. Biochemical treatment of such residues results in the release of various sugars, primarily glucose, sucrose, fructose, arabinose, and xylose along with other nutrients, such as trace elements. These sugars and nutrients can be metabolized in the absence of light (heterotrophic) or the presence of light (mixotrophic) by a variety of microalgae species for biomass and bioproduct production. The present review provides an up-to-date critical assessment of the prospects of various types of agricultural and food residues to serve as algae feedstocks an... [more]

Keywords: grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), selective harmonics elimination PWM (SHEPWM), voltage source inverter (VSI)
In this paper, an application of the recently developed Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA) for calculation of switching angles for Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) PWM in low-frequency voltage source inverter is proposed. The algorithm is based on insect behavior in the food foraging swarm of grasshoppers. The characteristic feature of GOA is the movement of agents is based on the position of all agents in the swarm. This method represents a higher probability of convergence than Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Modifications of GOA have been examined regarding their effect on the algorithm’s convergence. The proposed modifications were based on the following techniques: Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Natural Selection (NS), Adaptive Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (AGOA), and Opposite Based Learning (OBL). The performance of GOA and its modifications were compared with well-known PSO. Areas, where GOA is superior to PSO in terms of probability of convergence, have been shown... [more]

Keywords: lumped parameter model, ohm internal resistance, performance degradation, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, unscented Kalman filtering, unscented transformation
The increasingly serious environmental pollution and the shortage of social energy have promoted the rapid development of fuel cell vehicles. The major factor which limits the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles is durability. Accurately estimating the state and parameters of a fuel cell is critical to extending the life of the fuel cell. To address this challenge, we extended a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) lumped parameter model and incorporated new algorithms that are essential to estimate the health of the fuel cell in a range-extended fuel cell car. The unscented Kalman filter (UKF) algorithm has been used to estimate the ohmic internal resistance of the fuel cell in real time. By using the unscented transformation (UT) method, the linearization of the nonlinear state equation is avoided, and the filtering accuracy is improved without increasing the complexity of the system. By comparing simulation and experimental results, the feasibility and accuracy of the algo... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Levenberg–Marquardt method, nonlinear shape design problem, pipe type heat exchanger, Z-shape lateral fins with ribs
A non-linear three-dimensional inverse shape design problem was investigated for a pipe type heat exchanger to estimate the design variables of continuous lateral ribs on internal Z-shape lateral fins for maximum thermal performance factor η. The design variables were considered as the positions, heights, and number of ribs while the physical properties of air were considered as a polynomial function of temperature; this makes the problem non-linear. The direct problem was solved using software package CFD-ACE+, and the Levenberg−Marquardt method (LMM) was utilized as the optimization tool because it has been proven to be a powerful algorithm for solving inverse problems. Z-shape lateral fins were found to be the best thermal performance among Z-shape, S-shape, and V-shape lateral fins. The objective of this study was to include continuous lateral ribs to Z-shape lateral fins to further improve η. Firstly, the numerical solutions of direct problem were solved using both polynomial and... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption, exhaust emissions, real driving emission tests
One of the environmental aims of the European Union is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. According to European Parliament data, transport emissions accounted for about 25% of global carbon dioxide emissions in 2016, in which road transport had the largest share (approximately 72%). This phenomenon is particularly visible in urban agglomerations. The solution examples are the popularization of hybrid vehicles and the development of electromobility. The aim of this paper is an assessment of the energy consumption and exhaust emissions from passenger cars fitted with different powertrains in actual operation. For the tests, passenger cars with conventional engines of various emission classes were used as well as the latest hybrid vehicles and an electric car. It enabled a comparative assessment of the energy consumption under different traffic conditions, with particular emphasis on the urban phase and the entire RDE (Real Driving Emissions) test. The results were analyzed to identif... [more]

With the growing demand for clean and economically feasible renewable energy, solar photovoltaic (PV) system usage has increased. Among many factors, the tilt and azimuth angles are of great importance and influence in determining the photovoltaic panel’s efficiency to generate electricity. Although much research was conducted related to solar PV panels’ performance, this work critically determined the tilt and azimuth angles for PV panels in all countries worldwide. The optimum tilt and azimuth angles are estimated worldwide by the photovoltaic geographic information system (PVGIS). Also, annual and average daily solar irradiation incident on the tilted and oriented plate optimally (AR1 and DR1) are calculated. Besides, annual and average daily solar irradiation incident on plate tilt optimally and oriented because of the south in the northern hemisphere and because of the north in the southern hemisphere (AR2 and DR2) are estimated. PVGIS is also used to calculate the annual and aver... [more]

Methanol is a clean fuel and an important feedstock for the petrochemical industry. Conventionally, the coal-to-methanol process generates a substantial amount of CO2 emissions with a low yield of methanol. In this study, we propose the conceptual design development of coal-to-methanol process using captured CO2 from the gasification plant by implying process intensification. The base case and three alternative designs have been developed using the Aspen Plus to analyze the process performance. The four designs have been compared in terms of their energy consumption, economics, methanol production rate, and carbon emissions while maintaining the gasifier operation conditions, sulfur content in the syngas, and stoichiometric number at the methanol synthesis reactor. Among the developed designs, the most feasible design requires an energy requirement and product cost of 21.9 GJ and $142.5 per ton of methanol product. The study also showed that the coal-to-methanol process assisted with e... [more]

Keywords: combined cooling, heating and power, photovoltaic/thermal panels, thermal energy storage
The combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system is a promising energy-efficient technology to realize energy cascade utilization. With the integration of photovoltaic/thermal panels and thermal energy storage, the comprehensive performance of the system can be further improved. However, the performance is also affected by the operation strategy. The mathematical model of a CCHP system hybridized with photovoltaic/thermal panels and thermal energy storage is established in this paper. The optimal size of key components of the CCHP system is determined by the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Case studies of four scenarios of a residential zone in Beijing are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the system structure and efficiency of the proposed method. Keywords: economic dispatch, spatio-temporal kriging, uncertainty, wind power
The integration of renewable generation adds complexity to the operation of the power system due to its unpredictable characteristics. Therefore, the development of methods to accurately model the uncertainty is necessary. In this paper, the spatio-temporal kriging and analog approaches are used to forecast wind power generation and used as the input to solve an economic dispatch problem, considering the uncertainties of wind generation. Spatio-temporal kriging captures the spatial and temporal information available in the database to improve wind forecasts. We evaluate the performance of using the spatio-temporal kriging, and comparisons are carried out versus other approaches in the framework of the economic power dispatch problem, for which simulations are developed on the modified IEEE 3-bus and IEEE 24-bus test systems. The results demonstrate that the use of kriging based spatio-temporal models in the context of economic power dispatch can provide an opportunity for lower operati... [more]

Keywords: Machine Learning, multilayer current velocity, tidal current prediction, turbulence flow, UTide
Accurate tidal current prediction plays a critical role with increasing utilization of tidal energy. The classical prediction approach of the tidal current velocity adopts the harmonic analysis (HA) method. The performance of the HA approach is not ideal to predict the high frequency components of tidal currents due to the lack of capability processing the non-astronomic factor. Recently, machine learning algorithms have been applied to process the non-astronomic factor in the prediction of tidal current. In this paper, a tidal current velocity prediction considering the effect of the multi-layer current velocity method is proposed. The proposed method adopts three machine learning algorithms to establish the prediction models for comparative investigations, namely long-short term memory (LSTM), back-propagation (BP) neural network, and the Elman regression network. In the case study, the tidal current data collected from the real ocean environment were used to validate the proposed me... [more]

Keywords: gas insulated switchgears, gas insulated transmission lines, HVDC, insulators, spacers
Due to the ever-increasing demand for electricity in the one hand and the environmental constraints to use clean energy on the other hand, the global production of energy from remote renewable sources, particularly from large hydropower plants and offshore wind farms and their connection to the grid are expected to grow significantly in the future. Consequently, the demand to carry this electric power by high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology will increase too. The most suitable HVDC power transmission technology to deliver large amounts of power, exceeding a capacity of 5 GW per bipolar system over long distances with lower losses is by using compact HVDC gas insulated transmission lines (DC GIL) and gas insulated switchgears (DC GIS) with rated voltage (maximum continuous operating voltage) of ±550 kV and 5000 A which are presently under development worldwide. Among the critical challenges for the development of these HVDC gas insulated systems, there are the epoxy cast resin... [more]

Keywords: load control, maximum power point control, oscillating water column, power converter topology, power performance, torque control coefficient, turbine efficiency, wave energy converter
A power take-off (PTO) system for an oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converter comprises a turbine-generator-power converter. In this study, only the topologies of the power converter that affect the load control algorithm are compared. A power converter for renewable energy is composed of a diode-dc/dc converter and a pulse-width modulation (PWM) converter operating at small and large capacities, respectively. However, selecting a power converter according to the capacity based on the characteristics of the wave energy converter, in which the input energy is highly fluctuating, can significantly reduce the power performance. Thus, to verify load control characteristics according to the topology of the power converter, the turbine-generator-power converter was incorporated in the modeling, and the power performance based on the power converter topology under various wave conditions was analyzed. Further, torque control to obtain the maximum power among load control algorithm... [more]

Keywords: numerical modeling, phase change material (PCM), thermal heat storage (TES), unstructured packed bed
In this work, a numerical model to study phase transition in unstructured packed beds of phase change particles for latent heat thermal energy storage is presented and implemented into the open-source CFDEM® coupling program. The governing equations for both fluid and solid particles are discussed. The presented model is validated using experimental data. The validated model is used to study the effect of bed structure (e.g., using multiple sizes of particles and mixing of multiple configurations of particles) on the charging and discharging of PCM bed. It is found that using smaller particles leads to faster charging and discharging of the bed. A decrease of 26% was achieved by changing half the bed into particles with half the diameter. Furthermore, it is observed that placing small particles downstream has more effect on increased charging speed than placing them upstream when charging the bed fully. A decrease of 20% in charging time and a decrease of 13% in discharging time were o... [more]

Keywords: forward- and backward-facing steps, topographic effects, wind-turbine wake
We experimentally explored the modulation of various forward- and backward-facing topographic steps on the wake and power output of a wind turbine model. The sharp surface changes located in the vicinity of the turbine tower consisted of steps Δz0/dT=−0.64, −0.42, −0.21, 0, 0.21, and 0.42, where Δz0 is the level difference between the upwind and downwind sides of the step and dT is the turbine diameter. Particle image velocimetry was used to obtain the wake statistics in the wake within the streamwise distance x/dT∈[2, 5] and vertical span z/dT∈[−0.7, 0.7], where the origin is set at the rotor hub. Complementary single-point hotwire measurements were obtained in the wake along the rotor axis every Δx/dT=1 within x/dT∈[1, 8]. Mean power output and its fluctuations were obtained for each of the six scenarios. The results indicate strong modulation of the steps in the wake statistics and some effect on the power output. Remarkably, the backward-facing steps induced a larger velocity defic... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural networks, dynamic mode decomposition, inter-area oscillations, Machine Learning, modal analysis, reduced order modeling
An accurate monitoring of power system behavior is a hot-topic for modern grid operation. Low-frequency oscillations (LFO), such as inter-area electromechanical oscillations, are detrimental phenomena impairing the development of the grid itself and also the integration of renewable sources. An interesting countermeasure to prevent the occurrence of such oscillations is to continuously identify their characteristic electromechanical mode parameters, possibly realizing an online monitoring system. In this paper an attempt to develop an online modal parameters identification system is done using machine learning techniques. An approach based on the development of a proper artificial neural network exploiting the frequency measurements coming from actual PMU devices is presented. The specifically developed offline training stage is fully detailed. The output results from the dynamic mode decomposition method are considered as reference in order to validate the machine learning approach. S... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Capacitor Banks Placement, Exhaustive Search, Flower Pollination Algorithm, hybrid algorithm
Reactive power compensation with Capacitor Banks (CBs) is one of the most successful approaches used in distribution systems, mainly due to their versatility, long-term acceptance in the power industry, and reduced costs. Most allocation methods, however, lack specific strategies to handle the limited discrete nature of CBs sizes seeking to improve the overall optimization and computational performance. We present an algorithm for the Optimal Placement of Capacitor Banks (OPCB) in distribution systems by means of a hybrid Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA)−Exhaustive Search (ES) approach. The pollination process itself determines the sets of buses for placement, while CBs sizes and the final fitness values of each pollen are selected after a full-search is conducted in the sizing space. As the sizing phase works on the limited search space of predetermined discrete bank values, the computational effort to find the optimum CB capacity is greatly reduced. Tests were performed on distribu... [more]
The Potential Role of Power-to-Gas Technology Connected to Photovoltaic Power Plants in the Visegrad Countries—A Case Study

Keywords: biogas, biomethane, Energy Storage, power-to-gas, regulation
With the spread of the use of renewable sources of energy, weather-dependent solar energy is also coming more and more to the fore. The quantity of generated electric power changes proportionally to the intensity of solar radiation. Thus, a cloudy day, for example, greatly reduces the amount of electricity produced from this energy source. In the countries of the European Union solar power plants are obligated to prepare power generation forecasts broken down to 15- or 60-min intervals. The interest of the regionally responsible transmission system operators is to be provided with forecasts with the least possible deviation from the actual figures. This paper examines the Visegrad countries’ intraday photovoltaic forecasts and their deviations from real power generation based on the photovoltaic power capacity monitored by the transmission system operators in each country. The novelty of this study lies in the fact that, in the context of monitored PV capacities in the Visegrad countri... [more]

Keywords: clump weights, mooring lines, offshore wind energy, spar buoy floating platform
The spar buoy platform for offshore wind turbines is the most utilized type and the OC3 Hywind system design is largely used in research. This system is usually moored with three catenary cables with 120° between each other. Adding clump weights to the mooring lines has an influence on the platform response and on the mooring line tension. However, the optimal choice for their position and weight is still an open issue, especially considering the multitude of sea states the platform can be exposed to. In this study, therefore, an analysis on the influence of two such variables on the platform response and on the mooring line tension is presented. FAST by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is used to perform time domain simulations and Response Amplitude Operators are adopted as the main indicators of the clump weights effects. Results show that the clump weight mass is not as influential as the position, which turns out to be optimal, especially for the Surge degree of fre... [more]

Keywords: activation energy, dominating factors, electrodes, electrolytes, intermediate temperature, ionic conductivity, SOFC
To identify critical parameters upon variable operational temperatures in a planar SOFC, an experimentally agreeable model was established. The significance of temperature effect on the performance of SOFC components was investigated, and the effect of activation energy during the development of intermediate electrode materials was evaluated. It is found the ionic conductivity of electrolytes is identified to be unavoidably concerned in the development of the intermediate-temperature SOFC. The drop of the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte decreases the overall current density 63% and 80% at temperatures reducing to 700 °C and 650 °C from 800 °C. However, there exists a critical value on the defined ratio between the electric resistance of the electrolyte in the overall internal resistance of SOFC, above which the further increase in the ionic conductivity would not significantly improve the performance. The lower the operational temperature, the higher critical ratio of the electri... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cost optimization, septage treatment, vertical flow constructed wetland, wastewater treatment
Analysis of the current knowledge has revealed the lack of a method for increasing the cost-effectiveness of wastewater and septage treatment in plants overloaded by contamination. This was the premise for undertaking research on the process of septage pre-treatment in a subsurface vertical flow constructed wetland (SS-VF) prior to its input into the biological section of a municipal treatment plant. In previous research the authors have indicated that this allows for a significant reduction in the value of pollution indicators. The objective of this paper is to assess the cost-effectiveness of this process by means of an optimization model. The decision variable was the coefficient of septage stream distribution into the quantity directed to the SS-VF bed in relation to its total quantity. The optimization criterion was the minimization of the expected annual cost of wastewater and septage treatment. Verification of the model has shown that it is reasonable to subject all septage to t... [more]

A reasonable dataset, which is an essential factor of renewable energy forecasting model development, sometimes is not directly available. Waiting for a substantial amount of training data creates a delay for a model to participate in the electricity market. Also, inappropriate selection of dataset size may lead to inaccurate modeling. Besides, in a multivariate environment, the impact of different variables on the output is often neglected or not adequately addressed. Therefore, in this work, a novel Mode Adaptive Artificial Neural Network (MAANN) algorithm has been proposed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation, Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and population-based algorithms for the dynamic learning of renewable energy sources power generation forecasting model. The proposed algorithm has been trained and compared with three population-based algorithms: Advanced Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO), Jaya Algorithm, and Fine-Tuning Metaheuristic Algorithm (FTMA). Keywords: biomass conversion, catalytic transfer hydrogenation, deoxydehydration, rhenium oxide, tartaric acid, γ-butyrolactone
Hydrogenation of succinic acid and maleic acid produces C4 value-added chemicals such as γ-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran. Here, unsupported ReOx nanoparticles transform succinic acid to γ-butyrolactone and tetrahydrofuran via catalytic transfer hydrogenation with isopropanol as a liquid phase hydrogen donor. This catalyst is also active for the sequential reaction of deoxydehydration and transfer hydrogenation in isopropanol, synthesizing renewable succinic acid and its esters from tartaric acid. One-step conversion of tartaric acid to γ-butyrolactone is achieved in a moderate yield and the possible reaction pathway is discussed.

This paper presents a concept for the operation of a resonant DC−DC switched-capacitor converter with very high efficiency and output voltage regulation. In its basic concept, such a converter operates as a switched-capacitor voltage doubler (SCVD) in the Zero Current Switching (ZCS) mode with a constant output voltage. The proposed methods of switching allow for the switched-capacitor (SC) converter output voltage regulation, and improve its efficiency by the operation with Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS). In this paper, various switching patterns are proposed to achieve high efficiency and the output voltage control by frequency or duty cycle regulation. Some examples of the application of the proposed switching patterns are presented: in current control at the start-up of the converter, in a bi-directional converter, and in a modular cascaded system. The paper also presents an analytical model as well as the relationships between the switching frequency, voltage ratio and efficiency. F... [more]

Keywords: asymmetry, batch transportation, concentration curve, product oil, tailing phenomenon
Long-distance pipelines transporting multiple product oils such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, are important facilities for transporting fossil energy. One major concern in operation is the energy consumption of the pipeline. Energy consumption should be made optimized tracking batches of oils and cutting mixed oil, which requires an accurate prediction of concentration curve. In engineering, the concentration curve is usually assumed to be symmetric, but it is actually asymmetric, which may lead to estimation errors. Thus, the asymmetric concentration of mixed oil should be studied. The formation mechanism of the asymmetry of concentration curve has not been clearly clarified. A new method is proposed to measure the asymmetry of the concentration curve. Quantitative analysis is carried out for each factor on the asymmetry distribution of concentration curve. Based on the convection−diffusion equation, a modified oil-mixing model considering near wall adsorption effect is establishe... [more]

Keywords: circular economy, classification, EU countries, ranking, sustainable development
In this paper, we have analysed the level of advancement in circular economy (CE) in the EU-28 countries. First, we used a synthetic measure to examine CE advancement in EU countries in each of the Eurostat CE distinguished areas, i.e., production and consumption, waste management, secondary raw materials, and competitiveness and innovation. For the empirical analysis, we applied 17 Eurostat indicators to the CE areas. To find the synthetic measure in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, we used multidimensional comparative analysis, i.e., a zero unitarisation method. Second, based on the synthetic measures of the CE areas, we created a general synthetic measure of the CE advancement of the EU-28 countries as well as the countries’ rankings. Third, we classified the countries into groups according to their level of advancement in CE, i.e., high level, medium−high level, medium−low level and low level groups. Finally, we applied a similarity measure to evaluate the correlation between obtained ra... [more]
