Experimental Determination of the Influence of Shape on the Heat Transfer Process in a Crushed Granite Storage Bed
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat storage, heat transfer, rock bed storage, rock shape, sensible heat
The article presents the problem of modelling the charging of a constant-phase bed storage in the first hours of the process. The places of errors in the heat transfer calculations for the packed beds were indicated. Granite in the shape of spheres and crushed rocks, with a characteristic dimension of 50 mm, was used for the experimental tests. The material was subjected to tomographic examination and then used as a storage material. The charging process was carried out for three flow rates: 0.006, 0.008 and 0.010 m3/s. After three hours of testing, the temperature of the outlet air for the granite sphere as the storage material was the same as for the granite crushed rock. However, the biggest differences occurred after 1 h of charging. They were equal to: 40.4% for the flow rate of 0.006 m3/s, 22.0% for the flow rate of 0.008 m3/s, and 18.5% for the flow rate of 0.010 m3/s. The differences were greater than the uncertainty of the measurements. As a result, different temperatures of t... [more]

Ageing Tests of Samples of Glass-Epoxy Core Rods in Composite Insulators Subjected to High Direct Current (DC) Voltage in a Thermal Chamber
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3-point bending test, composite insulator, DC high voltage, glass-reinforced epoxy core, mechanical strength, micro-hardness
In this article, we presented the results of the tests performed on three sets of samples of glass-reinforced epoxy (GRE) core rods used in alternating current (AC) composite insulators with silicone rubber housing. The objective of this examination was to test the aging resistance of the rod material when exposed to direct current (DC) high voltage. We hypothesized that the long-term effects of the electrostatic field on the GRE core rod material would lead to a gradual degradation of its mechanical properties caused by ionic current flow. Further, we hypothesized that reducing the mechanical strength of the GRE core rod would lead to the breakage of the insulator. The first group of samples was used for reference. The samples from the second group were subjected to a temperature of about 50 °C for 6000 h. The third group of samples were aged by temperature and DC high voltage for the same time. The samples were examined using the 3-point bending test, micro-hardness measurement and m... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamics, cell-set model, flow control, microtab, wind turbine
Microtabs (MTs) are a regularly used flow control device in terms of wind turbine optimization. The present study introduces the application of the novel cell-set model for an MT implementation on a DU91W(2)250 airfoil. The cell-set model is based on the reusability of a mesh to add new geometries on the domain; the matching geometry is located where the user requires, and a set of cells is constructed around the mentioned geometry. Subsequently, wall boundaries are assigned to the generated region. Computational simulations were carried out for fully mesh and cell-set models: MT lengths were set at 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0% of the airfoil chord length (c) and the MTs were placed at 93% and 95% of c from the leading edge of the airfoil. Resulting data showed that the MT behavior was similar for both models with regard to aerodynamic performance curve representations. A global relative error of 3.784% was obtained for the cell-set model and a maximum relative error of 7.332% was determined. Q... [more]

Reducing Rotor Temperature Rise in Concentrated Winding Motor by Using Magnetic Powder Mixed Resin Ring
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: concentrated winding motor, eddy current loss, heat generation, magnetic circuit, magnetic composite material, spatial harmonics
The demand for high-speed servomotors is increasing, and minimal losses in both high-speed and high-torque regions are required. Copper loss reduction in permanent magnet motors can be achieved by configuring concentrated winding, but there are more spatial harmonics compared with distributed winding. At high-speed rotation, the eddy current loss of the rotor increases, and efficiency tends to decrease. Therefore, we propose a motor in which a composite ring made from resin material mixed with magnetic powder is mounted on the stator to suppress spatial harmonics. This paper describes three characteristic motor types, namely, open-slot motors, composite-ring motors, and closed-slot motors. Spatial harmonics are reduced significantly in composite-ring motors, and rotor eddy current loss is reduced by more than 50% compared with open-slot motors. Thermal analysis suggests that the saturation temperature rise value is reduced by more than 30 K. The use of a composite ring is effective in... [more]

Modified Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithm under Time-Varying Solar Irradiation
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: boost converter, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), photovoltaic (PV), single-diode PV cell model, time-varying solar irradiation
Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is one of the most viable renewable energy sources, considered less polluting than fossil energy. However, the average power conversion efficiency of PV systems is between 15% and 20%, and they must operate with high efficiency. Photovoltaic cells have non-linear voltage−current characteristics that are dependent on environmental factors such as solar irradiation and temperature, and have low efficiency. Therefore, it becomes crucial to harvest the maximum power from PV panels. This paper aims to study and analyze the most common and well-known maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms, perturb and observe (P&O) and incremental conductance (IncCond). These algorithms were found to be easy to implement, low-cost techniques suitable for large- and medium-sized photovoltaic applications. The algorithms were tested and compared dynamically using MATLAB/Simulink software. In order to overcome the low performance of the P&O and IncCond methods under time-v... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy storage units, fuzzy logic, Genetic Algorithm, low-voltage grid analysis
This paper refers to the issue that mainly appears in distribution grids, where renewable energy sources (RES) are widely installed. In such grids, one of the main problems is the coordination of energy production time with demand time, especially if photovoltaic energy sources are present. To face this problem, battery energy storage units (ESU) can be installed. In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to optimizing the use of ESU. This paper contains a simple description of available solutions for the application of ESU as well as an original proposal for selecting the optimal location and control of ESU. The ESU selection method is based on the use of a genetic algorithm and the ESU control method utilizes the fuzzy logic. The combination of the aforementioned methods/algorithms of ESU application is named an integrated algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm was validated by multivariate computer simulations with the use of the real low-voltage grid mode... [more]

Global Horizontal Irradiance Modeling for All Sky Conditions Using an Image-Pixel Approach
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cloud cover, cloud segmentation, GHI measurement, irradiance modeling with a sky camera
Ground images with a sky camera have become common to evaluate cloud coverage, aerosols, and energy collection. In parallel, the growth of solar energy has led to an impulse to evaluate and forecast the solar potential in a site before investments, which has increased the importance of solar power measurements. Facing that scenario, this work presents a novel sky camera model that allows to measure the global horizontal irradiance (GHI). Initially, images from a fisheye camera were stored and a pixel-based approach model was created for cloud segmentation. A total of 813 k vectors of features were used as input to the support vector machine for classification (SVC), which yielded a success rate of about 98.6% in accuracy. The Sun’s position was also segmented and an artificial neural network (ANN) regression model for GHI with 17 input features was created based on segmentation of the Sun, clouds, and sky. The training/validation stage of the ANN used 89,964 samples and the test stage... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bentonite drilling fluids, drilling fluids, iron oxide, KCl, nanoparticles
In recent years, several studies have indicated the impact of nanoparticles (NPs) on various properties (such as viscosity and fluid loss) of conventional drilling fluids. Our previous study with commercial iron oxide NPs indicated the potential of using NPs to improve the properties of a laboratory bentonite-based drilling fluid without barite. In the present work, iron oxide NPs have been synthesized using the co-precipitation method. The effect of these hydrophilic NPs has been evaluated in bentonite and KCl-based drilling fluids. Rheological properties at different temperatures, viscoelastic properties, lubricity, and filtrate loss were measured to study the effect of NPs on the base fluid. Also, elemental analysis of the filtrate and microscale analysis of the filter cake was performed. Results for bentonite-based fluid showed that 0.019 wt% (0.1 g) of NPs reduced the coefficient of friction by 47%, and 0.0095 wt% (0.05 g) of NPs reduced the fluid loss by 20%. Moreover, for KCl-ba... [more]

Real-Time Monitoring of the Thermal Effect for the Redox Flow Battery by an Infrared Thermal Imaging Technology
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: C-TiO2-Pd composite electrode, infrared thermal imaging, redox flow battery, separation membrane, thermal effect
In this study, a new monitoring method was developed, titled infrared thermal imaging technology, which can effectively evaluate the thermal effect of the charge-discharge test in the vanadium/iodine redox flow battery (V/I RFB). The results show that the all-vanadium redox flow battery (all-V RFB) has a greater molar reaction Gibbs free energy change than that of the V/I RFB, representing a large thermal effect of the all-V RFB than the V/I RFB. The charge-discharge parameters, flow rate and current density, are important factors for inducing the thermal effect, because of the concentration polarization and the ohmic resistor. The new membrane (HS-SO3H) shows a high ion exchange capacity and a good ions crossover inhibitory for the V/I RFB system, and has a high coulomb efficiency that reaches 96%. The voltage efficiency was enhanced from 61% to 86% using the C-TiO2-Pd composite electrode as a cathode with the serpentine-type flow field for the V/I RFB. By adopting the high-resolution... [more]

Analytical-Numerical Approach to the Skin and Proximity Effect in Lines with Round Parallel Wires
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: current density, current filament, cylindrical conductors, multi-wire bus duct, proximity effect, skin effect, successive reactions
Power and communication lines with round wires are often used in electrical engineering. The skin and proximity effects affect the current density distribution and increase resistances and energy losses. Many approaches were proposed to calculate the effects and related quantities. One of the simplest approximate closed solutions neglects the dimensions of neighboring wires. In this paper, a solution to this problem is proposed based on the method of successive reactions. In this context, the solution with substitutive filaments is considered as the first approximation of the true solution. Several typical arrangements of wires in single-phase communication lines or three-phase bus ducts are considered to detect the limits of applicability of the first approximation. The error of the first approximation grows with wire radius to skin depth ratio and wire radius to wire spacing ratio. When the wire radius to skin depth ratio is up to 1, and the gap between the wires is above the wire ra... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: district heating system, Gaussian process regression, Machine Learning, Model Predictive Control, Simulation
Innovative heating networks with a hybrid generation park can make an important contribution to the energy turnaround. By integrating heat from several heat generators and a high proportion of different renewable energies, they also have a high degree of flexibility. Optimizing the operation of such systems is a complex task due to the diversity of producers, the use of storage systems with stratified charging and continuous changes in system properties. Besides, it is necessary to consider conflicting economic and ecological targets. Operational optimization of district heating systems using nonlinear models is underrepresented in practice and science. Considering ecological and economic targets, the current work focuses on developing a procedure for an operational optimization, which ensures a continuous optimal operation of the heat and power generators of a local heating network. Using the Analysis of the Gases Dissolved in Oil in Diagnosis of Transformer Bushings with Paper-Oil Insulation—A Case Study
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dissolved gas analysis, high voltage bushing, oil-paper insulation
The article describes a case study when the voltage collapse during lightning impulse tests of new power transformers was noticed and when the repeated tests finished with a positive result. The step-by-step process of reaching the conclusion on the basis of dissolved gas analysis (DGA) as a key method of the investigations was presented. The considerations on the possible source of the analysis showed that the Duval triangle method, used in the analysis of the concentration of gases dissolved in oil samples taken from bushings, more reliably and unambiguously than the ratio method recommended in the IEC 60599 Standard, indicated a phenomenon which was identified in the insulation structure of bushings analyzed. Additionally, the results from DGA were found to be consistent with an internal inspection of bushings, which showed a visible trace of discharge on the inside part of the epoxy housing, as a result of the lightning induced breakdown.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bowl diffuser, CFD-DEM, deep-ocean mining, particle motion, slurry transport pump
The slurry transport pump is the key equipment of deep-ocean mining systems. The motion law of coarse particles in the pump is not clear enough. In this paper, a hydraulic model of a laboratory-scale two-stage slurry transport pump is constructed, and the motion characteristics of coarse particles in the pump are numerically studied by using the computational fluid dynamics−discrete element method (CFD-DEM) method. The performance curve of the pump is obtained by experimental measurement, and the reliability of the calculated results is verified. Due to the application of the amplification flow rate design method, the optimum efficiency point of the pump is shifted to the large flow rate condition. Differences in particle swarm within two stages are compared. The position distribution, velocity variation and trajectory of particles in the impeller and bowl diffuser are studied in detail. A Genetic Algorithm Approach as a Self-Learning and Optimization Tool for PV Power Simulation and Digital Twinning
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: auto-calibrated algorithms, digital simulation, genetic algorithms, Machine Learning, parameter estimation, photovoltaic systems
A key aspect for achieving a high-accuracy Photovoltaic (PV) power simulation, and reliable digital twins, is a detailed description of the PV system itself. However, such information is not always accurate, complete, or even available. This work presents a novel approach to learn features of unknown PV systems or subsystems using genetic algorithm optimization. Based on measured PV power, this approach learns and optimizes seven PV system parameters: nominal power, tilt and azimuth angles, albedo, irradiance and temperature dependency, and the ratio of nominal module to nominal inverter power (DC/AC ratio). By optimizing these parameters, we create a digital twin that accurately reflects the actual properties and behaviors of the unknown PV systems or subsystems. To develop this approach, on-site measured power, ambient temperature, and satellite-derived irradiance of a PV system located in south-west Germany are used. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: induction time, natural gas hydrates, rate of hydrate formation
In the present study, the effect of different kinds of impellers with different baffles or no baffle was investigated. Up-pumping pitched blade turbine (PBTU) and Rushton turbine (RT) were the two types of impellers tested. The reactor was equipped with different designs of baffles: full, half and surface baffles or no baffles. Single (PBTU or RT) and dual (PBTU/PBTU or RT/RT) use of impellers with full (FB), half (HB), surface (SB) and no baffle (NB) combinations formed two sets of 16 experiments. There was estimation of rate of hydrate formation, induction time, hydrate productivity, overall power consumption, split fraction and separation factor. In both single and dual impellers, the results showed that RT experiments are better compared to PBTU in rate of hydrate formation. The induction time is almost the same since we are deep in the equilibrium line while hydrate productivity values are higher in PBTU compared to RT experiments. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compressed natural gas (CNG), exhaust emissions, fuel consumption, operating costs, spark ignition small engine, wood chipper
The projected increase in the availability of gaseous fuels by growing popularity of household natural gas (NG) filling stations and the increase in the production of gaseous biogas-derived fuels is conducive to an increase in the use of NG fuel. Currently, natural gas in various forms (compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG)) is popular in maritime, rail and road transport. A new direction of natural gas application may be non-road mobile machines powered by a small spark-ignition engine (SI). Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: gas distribution problem, LNG supply chain, MILP, route optimization
A mathematical model for the design of small-scale supply chains for liquefied natural gas (LNG) has been developed. It considers the maritime delivery of LNG from supply ports to satellite terminals and land-based transports from the terminals to consumers on or off the coast. Both tactical and strategic aspects in the supply chain design are addressed by optimizing the maritime routing of a heterogeneous fleet of ships, truck connections, and the locations of the satellite terminals. The objective is to minimize the overall cost, including operation and investment costs for the selected time horizon. The model is expressed as a mixed-integer linear programming problem, applying a multi-period formulation to determine optimal storage sizes and inventory at the satellite terminals. Two case studies illustrate the model, where optimal LNG supply chains for a region with sparsely distributed island (without land transports) and a coastal region at a gulf (with both sea and land transport... Image-Based River Water Level Estimation for Redundancy Information Using Deep Neural Network
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: CNN, hydroeletric power plant, MobileNetV2, redundancy information, residual networks, water level
Monitoring and management of water levels has become an essential task in obtaining hydroelectric power. Activities such as water resources planning, supply basin management and flood forecasting are mediated and defined through its monitoring. Measurements, performed by sensors installed on the river facilities, are used for precisely information about water level estimations. Since weather conditions influence the results obtained by these sensors, it is necessary to have redundant approaches in order to maintain the high accuracy of the measured values. Staff gauge monitored by conventional cameras is a common redundancy method to keep track of the measurements. However, this method has low accuracy and is not reliable once it is monitored by human eyes. This work proposes to automate this process by using image processing methods of the staff gauge to measure and deep neural network to estimate the water level. Keywords: CGST, gear-shift, planetary gear-set, seamless torque delivery, transmission
Vehicle transmission which has discrete gear-stages inevitably produces torque drop during shifting gears. This torque drop should be minimized because it may lead to uncomfortable driving feeling and degradation of acceleration performance. In accordance with the spread of electric-powered vehicle technology, this study proposes novel transmission architecture to eliminate torque drop during shifting gears by using one electric motor and verifies its operating concept through experiments with a test-bench. The proposed transmission, called CGST (clutchless geared smart transmission) can synchronize the gear-shaft to be engaged for the next gear-stage with the output shaft by using a planetary gear-set and an electric motor. Subject: Environment
Keywords: climate change, drinking water, Energy, Paris agreement, Seawater Steam Engine, sustainable development
There is a broad consensus worldwide that anthropogenic climate change is a scientific fact. Likewise, the fact is that the UN’s efforts to address climate change over the last 28 years have not been successful enough. It is evident that the global average temperature is on the rise (1.1 °C above pre-industrial levels in 2019). A particular concern comes from the fact that the Paris Agreement on keeping increases in the global average temperature to below +2 °C is an unenforceable ambition, since the focus is more on consequences than causes. In addition, economic policies regarding global taxes, as well as adaptation and mitigation measures, are questionable, as there is no evidence that changes in the climate system will proceed at the same rate in the coming years. This paper proposes an engineering approach that considers all relevant aspects of the climate change problem and proposes a new policy, named the “Climate New Deal”.
