Cost-Aware Design and Simulation of Electrical Energy Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: cost modeling and simulation, cyber-physical system, design space exploration, design-time optimization, electrical energy system, sustainable energy planning, sustainable power planning, SystemC-AMS.
One fundamental dimension in the design of an electrical energy system (EES) is the economic analysis of the possible design alternatives, in order to ensure not just the maximization of the energy output but also the return on the investment and the possible profits. Since the energy output and the economic figures of merit are intertwined, for an accurate analysis it is necessary to analyze these two aspects of the problem concurrently, in order to define effective energy management policies. This paper achieves that objective by tracking and measuring the energy efficiency and the cost effectiveness in a single modular framework. The two aspects are modeled separately, through the definition of dedicated simulation layers governed by dedicated virtual buses that elaborate and manage the information and energy flows. Both layers are simulated concurrently within the same simulation infrastructure based on SystemC-AMS, so as to recreate at runtime the mutual influence of the two aspec... [more]

Cooperative Demand Response Framework for a Smart Community Targeting Renewables: Testbed Implementation and Performance Evaluation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: CoAP, consumption scheduling, cooperative demand response, MQTT, performance evaluation, Raspberry Pi board, renewable supply, TLS/DTLS.
Demand response (DR) is emerging as the workhorse of achieving energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint, which persists as a major challenge amongst all the different energy-chain players, i.e., the utility providers, policy makers, consumers, and the technology sector. For instance, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) paradigm and network-enabled appliances/devices have escalated the expectations of what technology could do for the acceptance of DR programs. In this work, we design, deploy on a scalable pilot testbed, and evaluate a collaboration-based approach to the demand-side management of a community of electricity consumers that jointly targets green consumption. The design of the framework architecture is centralized via the so-called aggregator, which optimizes the demand scheduled by consumers along with their time frame preferences towards the maximization of the consumption of renewables. On the pilot, we opt for lightweight, yet efficient platforms such as Raspberry Pi... [more]

Generation Units Maintenance in Combined Heat and Power Integrated Systems Using the Mixed Integer Quadratic Programming Approach
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: CHP-based systems, combined heat and power (CHP), demand response (DR), feasible operation region (FOR) of CHP, generation maintenance scheduling (GMS), maintenance scheduling.
Yearly generation maintenance scheduling (GMS) of generation units is important in each system such as combined heat and power (CHP)-based systems to decrease sudden failures and premature degradation of units. Imposing repair costs and reliability deterioration of system are the consequences of ignoring the GMS program. In this regard, this research accomplishes GMS inside CHP-based systems in order to determine the optimal intervals for predetermined maintenance required duration of CHPs and other units. In this paper, cost minimization is targeted, and violation of units’ technical constraints like feasible operation region of CHPs and power/heat demand balances are avoided by considering related constraints. Demand-response-based short-term generation scheduling is accomplished in this paper considering the maintenance intervals obtained in the long-term plan. Numerical simulation is performed and discussed in detail to evaluate the application of the suggested mixed-integer quadra... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: dynamic programming, Genetic Algorithm, heuristic method, hydropower generation, optimal generation scheduling, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
The optimal generation scheduling (OGS) of hydropower units holds an important position in electric power systems, which is significantly investigated as a research issue. Hydropower has a slight social and ecological effect when compared with other types of sustainable power source. The target of long-, mid-, and short-term hydro scheduling (LMSTHS) problems is to optimize the power generation schedule of the accessible hydropower units, which generate maximum energy by utilizing the available potential during a specific period. Numerous traditional optimization procedures are first presented for making a solution to the LMSTHS problem. Lately, various optimization approaches, which have been assigned as a procedure based on experiences, have been executed to get the optimal solution of the generation scheduling of hydro systems. This article offers a complete survey of the implementation of various methods to get the OGS of hydro systems by examining the executed methods from various... [more]

A Fast-Algorithmic Probabilistic Evaluation on Regional Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF) for Operational Planning of High Renewable Penetrated Power Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: cumulant-based method (CBM), linear sensitivity-based method (LSM), model-based operational planning, regional RoCoF, renewable energy sources (RESs).
The high rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) issue incurred by the integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into a modern power system significantly threatens the grid security, and thus needs to be carefully examined in the operational planning. However, severe fluctuation of regional frequency responses concerned by system operators could be concealed by the conventional assessment based on aggregated system frequency response. Moreover, the occurrence probability of a high RoCoF issue is actually a very vital factor during the system planner’s decision-making. Therefore, a fast-algorithmic evaluation method is proposed to determine the probabilistic distribution of regional RoCoF for the operational planning of a RES penetrated power system. First, an analytical sensitivity (AS) that quantifies the relationship between the regional RoCoF and the stochastic output of the RES is derived based on the generator and network information. Then a linear sensitivity-based analytical me... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: aluminum products, approaches for CCEP, CO2 Constrained Energy Planning (CCEP), CO2 emissions, electricity planning.
The production of primary aluminum is an energy-intensive industry which produces large amounts of direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions, especially from electricity consumption. Carbon Emissions Constrained Energy Planning proved to be an efficient tool for reducing energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. This study focuses on energy planning constrained by CO2 emissions and determines the required amount of CO2 emissions from electricity sources in order to meet specified CO2 emission benchmark. The study is demonstrated on and applied to specific aluminum products, aluminum slugs and aluminum evaporator panels. Three different approaches of energy planning are considered: (i) an insight-based, graphical targeting approach, (ii) an algebraic targeting approach of cascade analysis, and (iii) an optimization-based approach, using a transportation model. The results of the three approaches show that approximately 2.15 MWh of fossil energy source should be replaced with a zero-ca... [more]

A More Realistic Heat Pump Control Approach by Application of an Integrated Two-Part Control
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: building energy system simulation, distributed energy systems, heat pump control, heat pump scheduling.
Heat pumps are a vital element for reaching the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction targets in the heating sector, but their system integration requires smart control approaches. In this paper, we first offer a comprehensive literature review and definition of the term control for the described context. Additionally, we present a control approach, which consists of an optimal scheduling module coupled with a detailed energy system simulation module. The aim of this integrated two-part control approach is to improve the performance of an energy system equipped with a heat pump, while recognizing the technical boundaries of the energy system in full detail. By applying this control to a typical family household situation, we illustrate that this integrated approach results in a more realistic heat pump operation and thus a more realistic assessment of the control performance, while still achieving lower operational costs.

Sustainability Assessment for Manufacturing Operations
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: multi-criteria decision making, process planning, Sustainability.
Sustainability is becoming more and more important as a decision attribute in the manufacturing environment. However, quantitative metrics for all the aspects of the triple bottom line are difficult to assess. Within the present paper, the sustainability metrics are considered in tandem with other traditional manufacturing metrics such as time, flexibility, and quality and a novel framework is presented that integrates information and requirements from Computer-Aided Technologies (CAx) systems. A novel tool is outlined for considering a number of key performance indicators related to the triple bottom line when deciding the most appropriate process route. The implemented system allows the assessment of alternative process plans considering the market demands and available resources.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: FPGA implementation, homotopic continuation method, homotopy path planning method, mobile robotics, repulsion parameter.
In recent times, autonomous robots have become more relevant, aiming not only to be an extension of mobility and human performance but also allowing them to independently solve specific problems such as finding free-collision paths within some defined environments. In order to achieve this, several techniques have been developed, like action-reaction algorithms, sampling-based algorithms, and deterministic algorithms such as the Homotopy Path Planning Method (HPPM). This work presents, for the first time, a complete deterministic collision-free path planning scheme implemented in FPGA, which is mounted on a Scribbler 2 robot from Parallax. Then, an automatic algorithm of the repulsion parameter for the HPPM method is presented, using as a reference the minimum distance between the center of each obstacle with respect to the homotopic ideal path; furthermore, an algorithm is proposed for discriminating dead-end routes and collision risk trajectories, which allows us to obtain a feasible... Optimal Regulation of Pumping Station in Water Distribution Networks Using Constant and Variable Speed Pumps: A Technical and Economical Comparison
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: energy saving, optimal scheduling, pumping station, variable speed pump, water distribution network.
Greenhouse gas emission is one of the main environmental issues of today, and energy savings in all industries contribute to reducing energy demand, implying, in turn, less carbon emissions into the atmosphere. In this framework, water pumping systems are one of the most energy-consuming activities. The optimal regulation of pumping systems with the use of variable speed drives is gaining the attention of designers and managing authorities. However, optimal management and operation of pumping systems is often performed, employing variable speed drives without considering if the energy savings are enough to justify their purchasing and installation costs. In this paper, the authors compare two optimal pump scheduling techniques, optimal regulation of constant speed pumps by an optimal ON/OFF sequence and optimal regulation with a variable speed pump. Much of the attention is devoted to the analysis of the costs involved in a hypothetical managing authority for the water distribution sys... [more]

Multiobjective Approach for Medium- and Low-Voltage Planning of Power Distribution Systems Considering Renewable Energy and Robustness
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: general variable neighborhood search, MV/LV distribution system planning, renewable energy sources, robustness of planning.
In this paper, a multiobjective approach to carry out the planning of medium-voltage (MV) and low-voltage (LV) distribution systems, considering renewable energy sources (RES) and robustness, is proposed. Due to the uncertainties associated with RES and demand, the proposed planning methodology takes into account a robust planning index (RPI). This RPI allows us to evaluate the robustness estimation associated with each planning solution. The objective function in the mathematical model considers the costs of investment and operation and the robustness of the planning proposals. Due to the computational complexity of this problem, which is difficult to solve by means of classical optimization techniques, MV/LV planning is solved by a decomposition search and a general variable neighborhood search (GVNS) algorithm. To demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of this methodology, tests are performed in an integrated distribution system with 50 MV nodes and 410 LV nodes. Our numerical re... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: multi-step progressive optimality algorithm, peak shaving, reserve services, sensitive expected output, short-term hydro scheduling.
The integration of large-scale wind and solar power into the power grid brings new challenges to the security and stability of power systems because of the uncertainty and intermittence of wind and solar power. This sensitive expected output has real implications for short-term hydro scheduling (STHS), which provides reserve services to alleviate electrical perturbations from wind and solar power. This paper places an emphasis on the sensitive expected output characteristics of hydro plants and their effect on reserve services. The multi-step progressive optimality algorithm (MSPOA) is used for the STHS problem. An iterative approximation method is proposed to determine the forebay level and output under the condition of the sensitive expected output. Cascaded hydro plants in the Wujiang River are selected as an example. The results illustrate that the method can achieve good performance for peak shaving and reserve services. Scheduled Pre-Heating of Li-Ion Battery Packs for Balanced Temperature and State-of-Charge Distribution
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: battery cell grouping, battery pre-heating, dynamic battery model, idle period insertion, lithium ion battery, mutual pulse heating, thermal model.
Lithium-ion batteries exhibit significant performance degradation such as power/energy capacity loss and life cycle reduction in low-temperature conditions. Hence, the Li-ion battery pack is heated before usage to enhance its performance and lifetime. Recently, many internal heating methods have been proposed to provide fast and efficient pre-heating. However, the proposed methods only consider a combination of unit cells while the internal heating should be implemented for multiple groups within a battery pack. In this study, we investigated the possibility of timing control to simultaneously obtain balanced temperature and state of charge (SOC) between each cell by considering geometrical and thermal characteristics of the battery pack. The proposed method schedules the order and timing of the charge/discharge period for geometrical groups in a battery pack during internal pre-heating. We performed a pack-level simulation with realistic electro-thermal parameters of the unit battery... [more]

Multi-Objective Optimisation for Power System Planning Integrating Sustainability Indicators
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: electricity, environmental, financial, Genetic Algorithm, multi-objective optimisation, power system expansion planning, social, Sustainability.
The increase in global electricity demand, along with its impact on climate change, call for integrating sustainability aspects in the power system expansion planning. Sustainable power generation planning needs to fulfill different, often contradictory, objectives. This paper proposes a multi-objective optimisation model integrating four objective functions, including minimisation of total discounted costs, carbon emissions, land use, and social opposition. Other factors addressed in the model include renewable energy share, jobs created, mortality rates, and energy diversity, among others. Single-objective linear optimisations are initially performed to investigate the impact of each objective function on the resulting power generation mix. Minimising land use and discounted total costs favoured fossil fuels technologies, as opposed to minimising carbon emissions, which resulted in increased renewable energy shares. Minimising social opposition also favoured renewable energy shares,... [more]

Energy Vision Strategies for the EU Green New Deal: A Case Study of European Cities
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: city, climate change, decarbonisation, strategic energy planning.
There are three strategic levels for successful energy planning in cities: 1) Integration strategy for integrating energy planning into urban planning institutions; 2) Practice strategy for developing suitable energy planning practices in urban planning institutions, and 3) Vision strategy for the creation and integration of energy visions and scenarios required for long-term decarbonisation. The vision strategy is critical but not well researched and is the focus of this article. Using Strategic Energy Planning (SEP) as an analytical framework, the vision strategy of eight forerunner European cities are analysed. Some critical elements of SEP include the use of long-term targets, holistic energy system thinking, and retention of scenarios. The results indicate that the level of understanding and practice of the vision strategy is still deficient in the cities. Cities often use the practice of urban planning, which does not fit very well with energy planning, particularly with the visi... [more]

A Robust q-Rung Orthopair Fuzzy Information Aggregation Using Einstein Operations with Application to Sustainable Energy Planning Decision Management
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: aggregation operators, Einstein norms, q-rung orthopair fuzzy numbers, sustainable planning decision management.
A q-rung orthopair fuzzy set (q-ROFS), an extension of the Pythagorean fuzzy set (PFS) and intuitionistic fuzzy set (IFS), is very helpful in representing vague information that occurs in real-world circumstances. The intention of this article is to introduce several aggregation operators in the framework of q-rung orthopair fuzzy numbers (q-ROFNs). The key feature of q-ROFNs is to deal with the situation when the sum of the qth powers of membership and non-membership grades of each alternative in the universe is less than one. The Einstein operators with their operational laws have excellent flexibility. Due to the flexible nature of these Einstein operational laws, we introduce the q-rung orthopair fuzzy Einstein weighted averaging (q-ROFEWA) operator, q-rung orthopair fuzzy Einstein ordered weighted averaging (q-ROFEOWA) operator, q-rung orthopair fuzzy Einstein weighted geometric (q-ROFEWG) operator, and q-rung orthopair fuzzy Einstein ordered weighted geometric (q-ROFEOWG) operato... Plug-In Electric Bus Depot Charging with PV and ESS and Their Impact on LV Feeder
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bus depot operator, energy storage system, limited/unlimited charge scheduling algorithm, low voltage feeder, plug-in electric bus.
Plug-in electric buses (PEBs) are a promising alternative to conventional buses to provide a sustainable, economical, and efficient mode of transportation. However, electrification of public transportation leads to a phenomenon of peak load that impacts the stability of low voltage (LV) feeders. In this context, the effective integration of an energy storage system (ESS) and photovoltaic (PV) in a bus depot charging ecosystem can lead to i) peak load reduction and ii) charging cost reduction with low carbon emission. Therefore, a limited PEB charge scheduling algorithm is proposed for: i) bus depot operator (BDO) profit maximization and ii) grid stability enhancement considering the constraints of PEB charging and grids. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for BDO profit maximization has been formulated and analyzed using IBM ILOG studio with CPLEX solver. Simulation has been performed for SkyBus electric fleet using real-world data such as actual bus arrival and departure... [more]

Actors play a crucial role in sustainable energy development yet interaction in different contexts is an area that has not received much scholarly attention. Sustainable energy transitions theories such as the Multi-Level Perspective, for instance, have been criticized for not describing precisely the nature of the interactions between actors and institutions within socio-technical systems. The goal of this study was to empirically examine local actors’ engagement and its impact on the planning and implementation of sustainable energy initiatives in the villages and remote areas in Ghana. Using the mixed methodology approach, interviews were performed, focus discussion groups were held, and archival data were collected, and social network modeling and case study analysis was performed. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: battery scheduling, KiBaM, lithium-ion battery, reinforcement learning, thermal modeling.
This paper presents a reinforcement learning framework for solving battery scheduling problems in order to extend the lifetime of batteries used in electrical vehicles (EVs), cellular phones, and embedded systems. Battery pack lifetime has often been the limiting factor in many of today’s smart systems, from mobile devices and wireless sensor networks to EVs. Smart charge-discharge scheduling of battery packs is essential to obtain super linear gain of overall system lifetime, due to the recovery effect and nonlinearity in the battery characteristics. Additionally, smart scheduling has also been shown to be beneficial for optimizing the system’s thermal profile and minimizing chances of irreversible battery damage. The recent rapidly-growing community and development infrastructure have added deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to the available tools for designing battery management systems. Low-Capacity Exploitation of Distribution Networks and Its Effect on the Planning of Distribution Networks
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: capital investment, exploitation capacity, feeder’s efficiency, planning of distribution networks, power distribution networks.
The continuous variation and dispersion of the load demand during a 24-h day are uncontrolled aspects that affect the efficiency, operational conditions, and total cost of the power distribution network. The cost of the network is strongly related to the peak of demand, but the available capacity of the network is not used efficiently during the day because feeders and branches usually work under 70% of their full capacity. In this way, it is necessary to measure how efficiently the distribution network capacity is used and to identify the aspects that can be modified to improve it. This article proposes a new exploitation capacity index to measure the efficiency of a/the whole distribution network throughout the day in relation to the total available capacity of the branches that compose the network. A Long-Term Evaluation on Transmission Line Expansion Planning with Multistage Stochastic Programming
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: decomposition method, mixed-integer linear programming, multistage stochastic optimisation, transmission line expansion planning.
The purpose of this paper is to apply multistage stochastic programming to the transmission line expansion planning problem, especially when uncertain demand scenarios exist. Since the problem of transmission line expansion planning requires an intensive computational load, dual decomposition is used to decompose the problem into smaller problems. Following this, progressive hedging and proximal bundle methods are used to restore the decomposed solutions to the original problems. Mixed-integer linear programming is involved in the problem to decide where new transmission lines should be constructed or reinforced. However, integer variables in multistage stochastic programming (MSSP) are intractable since integer variables are not restored. Therefore, the branch-and-bound algorithm is applied to multistage stochastic programming methods to force convergence of integer variables. In addition, this paper suggests combining progressive hedging and dual decomposition in stochastic integer pr... MILP-PSO Combined Optimization Algorithm for an Islanded Microgrid Scheduling with Detailed Battery ESS Efficiency Model and Policy Considerations
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: battery energy storage system, islanded microgrid, linear programming, optimal scheduling, Particle Swarm Optimization.
This paper presents the optimal scheduling of a diesel generator and an energy storage system (ESS) while using a detailed battery ESS energy efficiency model. Optimal scheduling has been hampered to date by the nonlinearity and complexity of the battery ESS. This is due to the battery ESS efficiency being a multiplication of inverter and battery efficiency and the dependency of an inverter and any associated battery efficiencies on load and charging and discharging. We propose a combined mixed-integer linear programming and particle swarm optimization (MILP-PSO) algorithm as a novel means of addressing these considerations. In the algorithm, MILP is used to find some initial points of PSO, so that it can find better solution. Moreover, some additional algorithms are added into PSO to modify and, hence, improve its ability of dealing with constraint conditions and the local minimum problem. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than MILP and PSO alone... [more]
