Improved Optimal Control of Transient Power Sharing in Microgrid Using H-Infinity Controller with Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ABC, artificial bee colony algorithm, droop control, H∞ optimal controller, microgrid, Optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization, power sharing.
The microgrid has two main steady-state modes: grid-connected mode and islanded mode. The microgrid needs a high-performance controller to reduce the overshoot value that affects the efficiency of the network. However, the high voltage value causes the inverter to stop. Thus, an improved power-sharing response to the transfer between these two modes must be insured. More important points to study in a microgrid are the current sharing and power (active or reactive) sharing, besides the match percentage of power sharing among parallel inverters and the overshoot of both active and reactive power. This article aims to optimize the power response in addition to voltage and frequency stability, in order to make this network’s performance more robust against external disturbance. This can be achieved through a self-tuning control method using an optimization algorithm. Here, the optimized droop control is provided by the H-infinity (H∞) method improved with the artificial bee colony algorit... [more]

Design Optimization of Centralized−Decentralized Hybrid Solar Heating System Based on Building Clustering
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: density-based clustering, Genetic Algorithm, minimum spanning tree, solar heating system, system optimization.
Clean heating has not been widely applied in rural Chinese areas. Considering the abundance of solar energy resources, harvesting solar energy for heating can be an effective solution to the problem of space heating in most rural areas. As the disperse building distribution in rural areas makes it difficult to implement centralized heating on a large scale, deploying centralized−decentralized hybrid solar heating system can achieve the best result from both the technical and economic perspectives. Taking a virtual village in Tibet as an example, this paper explores how to obtain optimal design of centralized−decentralized hybrid solar heating system based on building clustering. The results show that: (1) Compared with the fully centralized system and fully decentralized system, the centralized−decentralized hybrid solar heating system in the studied case could achieve a life cycle cost (LCC) saving of 4.8% and 2.3%, respectively; (2) The LCC of centralized−decentralized hybrid solar h... BESS Primary Frequency Control Strategies for the West Africa Power Pool
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), mixed integer linear programming, primary frequency control, renewable energy sources, SOC restoration.
In recent years, power systems have been moving from conventional power plants toward the integration of renewable energy sources (RES). This trend is taking shape in many developing economies, including in the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP). The integration of RES, however, stresses grid security and stability due to the variability and intermittency of the underlying renewable sources. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) have been identified as a possible solution to address the frequency control challenges in the WAPP Interconnected Transmission System (WAPPITS) in order to help to accommodate high levels of RES. This paper analyzes the application and effectiveness of BESS in providing primary frequency control reserves in the WAPPITS. The analyses are based on numerical simulations that were performed using an open-loop model based on historic frequency measurements from the WAPPITS. The simplified model provided a first-order analysis of the frequency control and state of charge... [more]

Optimization of a Membraneless Microfluidic Fuel Cell with a Double-Bridge Flow Channel
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: double-bridge channel, membraneless microfluidic fuel cell, mixing region, numerical model, Optimization.
In this work, a design optimization study was conducted to improve the performance of a membraneless microfluidic fuel cell with a double-bridge cross-section of the flow channel. Governing equations including Navier−Stokes, mass-transport, and Butler−Volmer equations were solved numerically to analyze the electrochemical phenomena and evaluate the performance of the fuel cells. Optimization was performed to maximize the peak power density using a genetic algorithm combined with a surrogate model constructed by radial basis neural network. Two sub-channel widths of the flow channel were selected as design variables for the optimization. As a result, a large increase in the inner channel width and a small decrease in the outer channel width effectively increased the peak power density of the MMFC. The optimal design increased the peak power density by 57.6% compared to the reference design.

Multistage Optimization toward a Nearly Net Zero Energy Building Due to Climate Change
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy retrofit, multistage optimization, net zero energy building, NSGA-II, retrofit, TOPSIS.
Climate change is one of the major problems of the planet. The atmosphere is overloaded with carbon dioxide caused by fossil fuels that are burned for energy. Almost 40 percent of the total energy worldwide is used by the building sector, which comes from non-renewable sources and contributes up to 30% of annual greenhouse gas emissions globally. The building sector in Iran accounts for 33.8% of Iran’s total energy usage. Within the building sector, the energy consumption of Iranian educational buildings is 2.5 times higher than educational buildings in developed countries. One of the most effective ways of reducing global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions is retrofitting existing buildings. This study aims to investigate whether a particular energy-optimized design under the present climate conditions would respond effectively to future climate change. This can help designers make a better decision on an optimal model, which can remain optimal over the years based on cli... [more]

Efficient District Heating in a Decarbonisation Perspective: A Case Study in Italy
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: building renovation, district heating, dynamic conditions, Modelica language, Optimization.
The European and national regulations in the decarbonisation path towards 2050 promote district heating in achieving the goals of efficiency, energy sustainability, use of renewables, and reduction of fossil fuel use. Improved management and optimisation, use of RES, and waste heat/cold sources decrease the overall demand for primary energy, a condition that is further supported by building renovations and new construction of under (almost) zero energy buildings, with a foreseeable decrease in the temperature of domestic heating systems. Models for the simulation of efficient thermal networks were implemented and described in this paper, together with results from a real case study in Italy, i.e., University Campus of Parma. Activities include the creation and validation of calculation codes and specific models in the Modelica language (Dymola software), aimed at investigating stationary regimes and dynamic behaviour as well. Hybrid Energy Efficiency Friendly Frequency Domain TR Algorithm Based on PSO Algorithm Evaluated by Novel Maximizing HPA Efficiency Evaluation Criteria
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: 5G, Energy Efficiency, HPA, IBO, MER, OFDM, PAPR, PSO, PSO, TR.
Smart Grids (SGs) expedite secure, large-scale and efficient two-way communication between the power supply and management, but under a sophisticated 5G communication infrastructure, the multi carrier system is the principle system. The high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is one of the significant limitations of the 5G multi carrier (MC) system, as it impedes the efficient design of the 5G analogue front end. Tone reservation (TR) is a highly efficient scheme without signal distortion, which is designed by increasing the freedom in the frequency domain for PAPR reduction. In this paper, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based TR (PSO-TR) scheme proceeding with an optimal input power back off-modulation error ratio (IBO-MER) convergence criterion is proposed to improve high power amplifier (HPA) efficiency for OFDM systems. A probabilistic analysis of TR predistribution and freedom in the frequency domain, in relationship with the amplitude of its constituent samples, is carried o... [more]

Assessment and Integral Indexing of the Main Indicators of Oil and Gas Companies by Circular Convolution
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: circular convolution, competitive advantage, hierarchical analysis, integral index, investments, minimax, optimization model, share distribution.
In the oil and gas industry, which is the basis of the Russian energy market, a significant and urgent question arises: How to distribute companies according to their investment attractiveness? Accordingly, quantitative indicators are needed. Lacking extensive experience in the practical implementation of fundamental rating tools, work is needed to develop methodologies of weighting coefficients and lists, built on the experience of the “big three” rating agencies. The article proposes an algorithm for forming an integral rating of companies based on financial reporting indicators and the author’s rules of fuzzy logic based on the principle of “circular convolution”, from the best to the slave, deepening the analysis to the center, when all companies are exhausted and places in the rating are distributed. The problem of assessing and integrally indexing the indicators of large companies in leading sectors of the economy (e.g., oil and gas, banks, electricity) is becoming manifest, whil... [more]

Probabilistic Optimization Techniques in Smart Power System
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: chance constrained optimization, distributional robust optimization, energy management, probabilistic optimization, robust optimization, smart grid, Stochastic Optimization.
Uncertainties are the most significant challenges in the smart power system, necessitating the use of precise techniques to deal with them properly. Such problems could be effectively solved using a probabilistic optimization strategy. It is further divided into stochastic, robust, distributionally robust, and chance-constrained optimizations. The topics of probabilistic optimization in smart power systems are covered in this review paper. In order to account for uncertainty in optimization processes, stochastic optimization is essential. Robust optimization is the most advanced approach to optimize a system under uncertainty, in which a deterministic, set-based uncertainty model is used instead of a stochastic one. The computational complexity of stochastic programming and the conservativeness of robust optimization are both reduced by distributionally robust optimization.Chance constrained algorithms help in solving the constraints optimization problems, where finite probability get... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: floating wind farm, full field, layout optimization, offshore, random search, wake model, wind farm.
By optimizing the positions of wind turbines in a wind farm, the power loss caused by wake effects can be reduced maximally. A new methodology of layout optimization is proposed utilizing a full-field wake model that integrates the near-field and far-field wake models after modifications, and a random search (RS) algorithm improved with a scale factor for acceleration in high-density layouts. The methodology is applied to a floating wind farm composed of modular platforms, which have a novel configuration and the ability to face toward the wind direction. The applicability and efficiency of the methodology and the improved RS algorithm are validated. The power production of optimized layouts shows a flat crest with an increased number of wind turbines. There is a layout with maximal output power in the wind farm. The real optimal layout should be determined in consideration of both output power and cost. Two sizes of platforms with different number of modules are compared in the applic... [more]

A Study on Improving Economy Efficiency of Pumping Stations Based on Tariff Changes
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: economic efficiency, energy tariff, pumping stations.
In this paper, research on improving the economic efficiency of 38 drainage pumping stations was undertaken. Particular attention was paid to the effectiveness of activities without considering any expenditures. Energy costs for this type of machine are usually high, approximately 45% of the total maintenance cost. The main assumption of this work was the selection of appropriate energy tariffs to reduce operating costs. Liquid transport in any economy consumes significant amounts of electricity, estimated at 20−30% of the total electricity production. The optimization of the energy consumption of pumping processes is, therefore, very important. While analyzing the choice of energy tariffs, we designed profitability ratios (PR) specifically for different daily time zones. With the forecasted distribution of energy demands for different daily time zones (usually 2 or 3 zones), it was possible to compare multi-zone tariffs with 24 h tariffs. The profitability of the tariffs was decided b... [more]

Time-Interval-Varying Optimal Power Dispatch Strategy Based on Net Load Time-Series Characteristics
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: carbon credit, net load, power system optimization, renewable power consumption, time-interval-varying optimal power dispatch, wind power.
In China, with the increasing permeability of wind power, the power supply capacity is enough overall, but has shortage in partial-time. During peak hours, the capability of wind power consumption is poor and the power balance becomes more difficult. In order to maximize the utilization of wind power, the net loads are chosen as the response objectives, which contain significant uncertainties and have no probabilistic distribution characteristics. Under the traditional day-ahead power dispatch mode with fixed length time intervals and in the regions with insufficient hydroelectricity, the thermal generators take charge of the peak-load shaving. The frequent adjustments of thermal power output affect the system operation safety, economic benefits, and environmental benefits. Thus, a time-interval-varying optimal power dispatch strategy based on net load time-series characteristics is proposed in this paper. The net loads respond differently to intervals. The length of each time interval... [more]

An Improved Partial Shading Detection Strategy Based on Chimp Optimization Algorithm to Find Global Maximum Power Point of Solar Array System
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA), global maximum power point tracking (GMPPT), load variations, modified perturb and observe, partial shading conditions, photovoltaic system.
A PV system’s operation highly depends on weather conditions. In case of varying irradiances or load changes, there is a power mismatch between various modules of the PV array. This power mismatch causes instability in the output of the PV system and deteriorates the overall system efficiency. To overcome instability and lower efficiency problems, and to extract maximum power from the PV system, various maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques are employed. The success of these techniques depends on the identification of the actual operating conditions of the system. This article proposes a hybrid maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique that is capable of efficiently differentiating between uniform irradiance, non-uniform irradiance, and load variations on the PV system. Based on the identified operating conditions, the proposed method uses modified perturb and observe (Modified P&O) to cope with uniform irradiance variations and chimp optimization algorithms (ChOA) for non... Optimizing Multi Cross-Docking Systems with a Multi-Objective Green Location Routing Problem Considering Carbon Emission and Energy Consumption
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: cross-docking, multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO), non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II).
Cross-docking is an excellent way to reduce the space required to store goods, inventory management costs, and customer order delivery time. This paper focuses on cost optimization, scheduling incoming and outgoing trucks, and green supply chains with multiple cross-docking. The three objectives are minimizing total operating costs, truck transportation sequences, and carbon emissions within the supply chain. Since the linear programming model is an integer of zero and one and belongs to NP-hard problems, its solution time increases sharply with increasing dimensions. Therefore, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) and the multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) were used to find near-optimal solutions to the problem. Then, these algorithms were compared with criteria such as execution time and distance from the ideal point, and the superior algorithm in each criterion was identified.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: DC microgrid, electric vehicle, Optimization, partial observability.
Many electric vehicles (EVs) are using today’s distribution grids, and their flexibility can be highly beneficial for the grid operators. This flexibility can be best exploited by DC power networks, as they allow charging and discharging without extra power electronics and transformation losses. From the grid control perspective, algorithms for planning EV charging are necessary. Keywords: demand response, dynamic electricity pricing scheme, linear regression, Particle Swarm Optimization, renewable energy resources.
The green innovations in the energy sector are smart solutions to meet the excessive power requirements through renewable energy resources (RERs). These resources have forwarded the revolutionary relief in control of carbon dioxide gaseous emissions from traditional energy resources. The use of RERs in a heuristic manner is necessary to meet the demand side management in microgrids (MGs). The pricing scheme limitations hinder the profit maximization of MG and their customers. A Heuristic Charging Cost Optimization Algorithm for Residential Charging of Electric Vehicles
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: charging cost, electric vehicles, heuristic algorithm, Optimization, real-time price.
The charging loads of electric vehicles (EVs) at residential premises are controlled through a tariff system based on fixed timing. The conventional tariff system presents the herding issue, such as with many connected EVs, all of them are directed to charge during the same off-peak period, which results in overloading the power grid and high charging costs. Besides, the random nature of EV users restricts them from following fixed charging times. Consequently, the real-time pricing scenarios are natural and can support optimizing the charging load and cost for EV users. This paper aims to develop charging cost optimization algorithm (CCOA) for residential charging of EVs. The proposed CCOA coordinates the charging of EVs by heuristically learning the real-time price pattern and the EV’s information, such as the battery size, current state-of-charge, and arrival & departure times. In contrast to the holistic price, the CCOA determines a threshold price value for each arrival and depart... [more]
