Oscar Danilo Montoya, Walter Gil-González, Edwin Rivas-Trujillo
April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: battery energy storage system, economic dispatch problem, mathematical optimization, nonlinear programming formulation, optimal reallocation of batteries
This paper deals with the problem of optimal location and reallocation of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in direct current (dc) microgrids with constant power loads. The optimization model that represents this problem is formulated with two objective functions. The first model corresponds to the minimization of the total daily cost of buying energy in the spot market by conventional generators and the second to the minimization of the costs of the daily energy losses in all branches of the network. Both the models are constrained by classical nonlinear power flow equations, distributed generation capabilities, and voltage regulation, among others. These formulations generate a nonlinear mixed-integer programming (MINLP) model that requires special methods to be solved. A dc microgrid composed of 21-nodes with existing BESS is used for validating the proposed mathematical formula. This system allows to identify the optimal location or reallocation points for these batteries by im... [more]

April 25, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: fuel economy, hybrid electric vehicle, Particle Swarm Optimization, power-split
This research focused on real-time optimization control to improve the fuel consumption of power-split hybrid electric vehicles. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) was implemented to reduce fuel consumption for real-time optimization control. The engine torque was design-variable to manage the energy distribution of dual energy sources. The AHS II power-split hybrid electric system was used as the powertrain system. The hybrid electric vehicle model was built using Matlab/Simulink. The simulation was performed according to US FTP-75 regulations. The PSO design objective was to minimize the equivalent fuel rate with the driving system still meeting the dynamic performance requirements. Through dynamic vehicle simulation and PSO, the required torque value for the whole drivetrain system and corresponding high-efficiency engine operating point can be found. With that, the two motor/generators (M/Gs) supplemented the rest required torques. The composite fuel economy of the PSO algorithm was... [more]

Keywords: Harris hawks, optimal power flow, Optimization, RDS, solar PV, transmission loss
The restructuring of power systems and the ever-increasing demand for electricity have given rise to congestion in power networks. The use of distributed generators (DGs) may play a significant role in tackling such issues. DGs may be integrated with electrical power networks to regulate the drift of power in the transmission lines, thereby increasing the power transfer capabilities of lines and improving the overall performance of electrical networks. In this article, an effective method based on the Harris hawks optimization (HHO) algorithm is used to select the optimum capacity, number, and site of solar-based DGs to reduce real power losses and voltage deviation. The proposed HHO has been tested with a complex benchmark function then applied to the IEEE 33 and IEEE 69 bus radial distribution systems. The single and multiple solar-based DGs are optimized for the optimum size and site with a unity power factor. It is observed that the overall performance of the systems is enhanced wh... [more]

Aleksandra Komorowska
April 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: capacity adequacy, capacity market, decarbonisation, energy transition, linear programming
In recent years, numerous countries have introduced or considered capacity markets as remuneration mechanisms for long-term capacity adequacy. Since adequacy is frequently linked with thermal power generation, there is an ongoing debate as to whether this instrument could impact decarbonisation. In this context, the paper presents a quantitative assessment of the consequences of introducing a capacity market on decarbonisation pathways. The Polish power system is taken as an example due to its heavy dependence on fossil fuels. To this end, a computable model of the Polish power system is developed and applied to the study of two research scenarios. The first scenario presents the power system without introducing a capacity market, while the latter considers the system with a capacity market in place. The analysis shows that the introduction of a capacity market delays the decarbonisation of the power system and has a negative impact on carbon neutrality. Even though coal-fired units ar... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: efficient reduction of emissions, linear optimization, smart energy neighborhood
The Clean Energy for all Europeans Package by the EU aims, among other things, to enable collective self-consumption for various forms of energy. This step towards more prosumer-based and decentralized energy systems comes at a time when energy planning at a neighborhood scale is on the rise in many countries. It is widely assumed that—from a prosumer’s cost-perspective—shared conversion and storage technologies supplying more than a single building can be advantageous. However, it is not clear whether this is the case generally or only under certain conditions. By analyzing idealized building clusters at different degrees of urbanization (DOU), a linear-optimization approach is used to study the cost difference between shared energy infrastructure (smart energy neighborhoods, SENs) and individually planned buildings. This procedure is carried out for various emission reduction targets. The results show, that with higher emission reduction targets the advantage of SENs increases within... [more]

CO2 capture and reinjection process (CCRP) can reduce the used CO2 amount and improve the CO2 storage efficiency in CO2 EOR projects. To select the best CCRP is an important aspect. Based on the involved equipment units of the CCRP, a novel techno-economic model of CCRP for produced gas in CO2 EOR and storage project was established. Five kinds of CO2 capture processes are covered, including the chemical absorption using amine solution (MDEA), pressure swing adsorption (PSA), low-temperature fractionation (LTF), membrane separation (MS), and direct reinjection mixed with purchased CO2 (DRM). The evaluation indicators of CCRP such as the cost, energy consumption, and CO2 capture efficiency and purity can be calculated. Taking the pilot project of CO2 EOR and storage in XinJiang oilfield China as an example, a sensitivity evaluation of CCRP was conducted based on the assumed gas production scale and the predicted yearly gas production. Finally, the DRM process was selected as the main CC... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: DC microgrid, differential evolution, overcurrent protection
DC microgrids have advantages over AC microgrids in terms of system efficiency, cost, and system size. However, a well-designed overcurrent protection approach for DC microgrids remains a challenge. Recognizing this, this paper presents a novel differential evolution (DE) based protection framework for DC microgrids. First, a simplified DC microgrid model is adopted to provide the analytical basis of the DE algorithm. The simplified model does not sacrifice performance criterion in steady-state simulation, which is verified through extensive simulation studies. A DE-based novel overcurrent protection scheme is then proposed to protect the DC microgrid. This DE method provides an innovative way to calculate the maximum line current, which can be used for the overcurrent protection threshold setting and the relay coordination time setting. The detailed load condition and solar irradiance for each bus can be obtained by proposed DE-based method. Finally, extensive case studies involving f... [more]

Cogeneration of heat and power systems based on the organic Rankine cycle (ORC-CHP) has been proven to be an effective way to utilize waste heat at medium and low temperatures. In this work, three ORC-CHP (combined heat and power based on organic Rankine cycle) systems are simulated and compared, including the SS (serial system), the CS (the condensation system), and the SS/CS. The multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) is used to optimize the three systems respectively to achieve higher exergy efficiency and profit ratio of investment (PRI). The optimal thermal-economic performance is obtained. Twelve organic fluids are adopted to evaluate their performance as working fluids. The calculation results show that SS has the highest exergy efficiency, while SS/CS has the best economic performance. Compared with the highest exergy efficiency of SS and the best economic performance of SS/CS, CS will be the optimal solution considering these two objective functions. Under the optimal workin... A successful transformation of the energy and transportation sector is one of the main targets for our society today. Battery electric vehicles can play a key role in future renewable-based energy supply systems because of their ability to store electrical power. Additionally, they provide significant charging flexibility due to the long parking durations. In this paper, we provide insights into the temporal and power-specific flexibility behavior of three different vehicle fleets. These fleets are pool vehicles of office employees, a public authority, and a logistics company. Several parameters, such as the average charging power per charging event or the average plug-in duration per charging event, are discussed. Additionally, we investigate different charging rates and their impact on the temporal flexibility of the charging events. The data analysis shows that the logistics site has the most homogeneous charging profile as well as high charging flexibility, in contrast to the offic... [more]

Keywords: aggregator, data-driven models, demand response, energy flexibility, mixed-integer linear programming
This paper presents a novel framework architecture for an online, real-time flexibility assessment and activation platform targeted at unlocking the flexibility potential of commercial buildings and smaller industrial sites, thereby enabling greater levels of renewable grid integration. Renewable integration targets in Europe of up to 40% of power generation from renewable sources by 2030 and over 90% by 2050 aim to decarbonize the electrical grid and increase electrification of transport, industry, and buildings. As renewable integration targets increase, participation in flexibility programs will be required from a much greater range of buildings and sites to balance grids hosting high levels of renewable generation. In this paper, an online implementation of a standardized flexibility assessment methodology, previously developed for offline contract negotiations between stakeholders, is modified to automate the assessment. The automated assessment is then linked to an aggregator-bas... [more]

Keywords: artificial bee colony, axial induction, differential evolution, hexagonal layouts, Particle Swarm Optimization, regular layouts, turbulence intensity, wind plant power maximization
Layout optimization is capable of increasing turbine density and reducing wake effects in wind plants. However, such optimized layouts do not guarantee fixed T-2-T distances in any direction and would be disadvantageous if reduction in computational costs due to turbine set-point updates is also a priority. Regular turbine layouts are considered basic because turbine coordinates can be determined intuitively without the application of any optimization algorithms. However, such layouts can be used to intentionally create directions of large T-2-T distances, hence, achieve the gains of standard/non-optimized operations in these directions, while also having close T-2-T distances in other directions from which the gains of optimized operations can be enjoyed. In this study, a regular hexagonal turbine layout is used to deploy turbines within a fixed area dimension, and a turbulence intensity-constrained axial induction-based plant-wide optimization is carried out using particle swarm, art... Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ancillary services, CCP, distribution system, robust optimization, sequential SOCP
Distributed generators providing auxiliary service are an important means of guaranteeing the safe and economic operation of a distribution system. In this paper, considering an energy storage system (ESS), switchable capacitor reactor (SCR), step voltage regulator (SVR), and a static VAR compensator (SVC), a two-stage multi-period hybrid integer second-order cone programming (SOCP) robust model with partial DGs providing auxiliary service is developed. If the conic relaxation is not exact, a sequential SOCP is formulated using convex−concave procedure (CCP) and cuts, which can be quickly solved. Moreover, the exact solution of the original problem can be recovered. Furthermore, in view of the shortcomings of the large computer storage capacity and slow computational rate for the column and constraint generation (CCG) method, a method direct iteratively solving the master and sub-problem is proposed. Increases to variables and constraints to solve the master problem are not needed. For... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: genetic algorithms, hybrid method, SIMP-GA, structural lightweight design, topology optimization
Topological optimization is an innovative method to realize the lightweight design. This paper proposes a hybrid topology optimization method that combines the SIMP (solid isotropic material with penalization) method and genetic algorithm (GA), called the SIMP-GA method. In the method, SIMP is used to update the chromosomes, which can accelerate convergence. The filtering scheme in the SIMP method can filter unconnected elements to ensure the connectivity of the structure. We studied the influence of varying the filtering radius on the optimized structure. Simultaneously, in the SIMP-GA method, each element is regarded as a gene, which controls the population number to a certain extent, reduces the amount of calculation, and improves the calculation efficiency. The calculation of some typical examples proves that the SIMP-GA method can obtain a better solution than the gradient-based method. Compared with the conventional genetic algorithm and GA-BESO (Bi-directional Evolutionary Struc... [more]

SCASA is a patented technique commercialized as a surge protector device (SPD) that adheres to UL-1449 test standards. Apart from the novel use of supercapacitors, SCASA design incorporates a coupled-inductor wound to a specially selected magnetic material of powdered-iron. In this study, we investigate the limitations of the present design under transient operation and elucidate ways to eliminate them with the use of air-gapped ferrite cores. In modelling the operation under 50 Hz AC and transient conditions, a permeance-based approach is used; in addition, non-ideal characteristics of the transformer core are emphasized and discussed with empirical validations. The experimental work was facilitated using a lightning surge simulator coupled with the 230 V AC utility mains; combinational surge-waveforms (6 kV/3 kA) defined by IEEE C62.41 standards were continuously injected into SPD prototypes during destructive testing. Subject: Optimization
Keywords: air water generator, atmospheric water condensation, panel cleaning optimization, photovoltaic cleaning
Photovoltaic panel efficiency can be heavily affected by soiling, due to dust and other airborne particles, which can determine up to 50% of energy production loss. Generally, it is possible to reduce that impact by means of periodic cleaning, and one of the most efficient cleaning solutions is the use of demineralized water. As pauperization of traditional water sources is increasing, new technologies have been developed to obtain the needed water amount. Water extracted from the air using air to water generator (AWG) technology appears to be particularly suitable for panel cleaning, but its effective employment presents issues related to model selection, determining system size, and energy efficiency. To overcome such issues, the authors proposed a method to choose an AWG system for panel cleaning and to determine its size accordingly, based on a cleaning time optimization procedure and tailored to AWG peculiarities, with an aim to maximize energy production. In order to determine th... [more]

Keywords: AFWA, fault analysis of secondary system of smart substation, H-mine, parameter optimization of association rules
The fault data of the secondary system of smart substations hide some information that the association analysis algorithm can mine. The convergence speed of the Apriori algorithm and FP-growth algorithm is slow, and there is a lack of indicators to evaluate the correlation of association rules and the method to determine the parameter threshold. In this paper, the H-mine algorithm is used to realize the fast mining of fault data. The algorithm can traverse data faster by using the data structure of the H-struct. This paper also sets the lift and CF value to screen the association rules with good correlation. When setting the three key parameters of association analysis, namely, support threshold, confidence threshold, and lift threshold, an objective function composed of weighted average lift, CF value, and data coverage rate was selected, and the adaptive fireworks algorithm was used to optimize the parameters in the association analysis. In particular, the rule screening strategy is... [more]

In recent years, wind farm layout optimization (WFLO) has been extendedly developed to address the minimization of turbine wake effects in a wind farm. Considering that increasing the degrees of freedom in the decision space can lead to more efficient solutions in an optimization problem, in this work the WFLO problem that grants total freedom to the wind farm area shape is addressed for the first time. We apply multi-objective optimization with the power output (PO) and the electricity cable length (CL) as objective functions in Horns Rev I (Denmark) via 13 different genetic algorithms: a traditionally used algorithm, a newly developed algorithm, and 11 hybridizations resulted from the two. Turbine wakes and their interactions in the wind farm are computed through the in-house Gaussian wake model. Results show that several of the new algorithms outperform NSGA-II. Length-unconstrained layouts provide up to 5.9% PO improvements against the baseline. When limited to 20 km long, the obta... [more]

Keywords: behavioral economics, energy dispatching strategy, household energy storage, multi-objective optimization
Power systems optimization is generally subject to the compromise between performance and cost. The 2021 Texas grid outage illustrates the worldwide dangers for the regional-centralized power grid, with comparable advantages to safety and flexibility for the distributed energy system. The storage of household batteries helps balance grid load and increase system stability and flexibility. However, household storage battery is still not widely used today because of its high costs. Currently, research on increasing household battery storage applicability is focused largely on optimizing economic strategies, such as configuration, dispatching and subsidy policies, which rely substantially more on technologies and financial perspectives. Consumers are not ‘rational’ individuals, and non-economic incentives can affect their decisions without raising prices. This paper consequently proposes to encourage users to acquire household battery storage to increase efficiency of power dispatching an... [more]

To relieve the peak operating power of the electric grid for an electric bus fast-charging station, this paper proposes to install a stationary energy storage system and introduces an optimization problem for obtaining the optimal sizes of an energy buffer. The charging power demands of the fast-charging station are uncertain due to arrival time of the electric bus and returned state of charge of the onboard energy storage system can be affected by actual traffic conditions, ambient temperature and other factors. The introduced optimization is formulated as a stochastic program, where the power matching equality of the total charging demands of connected electric buses is described as a chance constraint by denoting a satisfaction probability, then a stochastic supremum for the operating power of the electric grid is defined by actual data and the problem finally can be solved by convex programming.
