Design Optimization of Multi-Layer Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines for Electric Vehicle Applications
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, multi-layer permanent magnet machines, optimal design, synchronous machines.
This paper presents a comparison between two design methodologies applied to permanent magnet synchronous machines for hybrid and electric vehicles (HEVs and EVs). Both methodologies are based on 2D finite element models and coupled to a genetic algorithm to optimize complex non-linear geometries such as multi-layer permanent magnet machines. To reduce the computation duration to evaluate Induced Voltage and Iron Losses for a given electrical machine configuration, a new methodology based on geometrical symmetries and magnetic symmetries are used and is detailed. Two electromagnetic models have been developed and used in the design stage. The first model was the stepped rotor position finite element analysis called abc model which considered the spatial harmonics without any approximation of the waveform of flux linkage inside the stator, and the second model was based on a fixed rotor position called dq model, with the approximation that the waveform of flux linkage inside the stator... A Smart Strategy for Sizing of Hybrid Renewable Energy System to Supply Remote Loads in Saudi Arabia
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: demand response, hybrid, Particle Swarm Optimization, pumped hydro energy storage, renewable, sizing, smart grid.
The use of hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) has become the best option for supplying electricity to sites remote from the central power system because of its sustainability, environmental friendliness, and its low cost of energy compared to many conventional sources such as diesel generators. Due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy resources, there is a need however for an energy storage system (ESS) to store the surplus energy and feed the energy deficit. Most renewable sources used battery storage systems (BSS), a green hydrogen storage system (GHSS), and a diesel generator as a backup for these sources. Batteries are very expensive and have a very short lifetime, and GHSS have a very expensive initial cost and many security issues. In this paper, a system consisting of wind turbines and a photovoltaic (PV) array with a pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) system as the main energy storage to replace the expensive and short lifetime batteries is proposed. The proposed... [more]

Optimal Chiller Loading by Team Particle Swarm Algorithm for Reducing Energy Consumption
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy consumption, optimal chiller loading (OCL) problem, particle swarm optimization (PSO), team particle swarm optimization (TPSO).
Energy saving is an important issue for multiple-chiller systems. Optimal chiller loading (OCL) in multiple-chiller systems has been investigated with many optimization algorithms to save energy. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm has been successful in solving this problem in some cases, but not in all. This study innovatively added a team evolution to the original particle swarm optimization algorithm, called team particle swarm optimization (TPSO). The TPSO enhances the effectiveness of original particle swarm optimization to better solve the OCL problem. The TPSO algorithm is composed of two evolutions: particle evolution and team evolution. The partial load ratio (PLR) of each operating chiller and the on-off state of each chiller are the particle evolution parameters and team evolution parameters, respectively. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, this paper adopts three case studies so the results generated from the proposed algorithm TPSO, the original p... [more]

Magnetic Coupler Optimization for Inductive Power Transfer System of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: coupling coefficient, inductive power transfer (IPT), magnetic coupler, PQI cores, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely used in military and civilian applications. However, the insufficient cruising range restricts the development of UAVs due to the limitation of their battery. Inductive power transfer (IPT) is an effective way to charge the battery and solve this problem. Magnetic coupler is a key component of the IPT system, which greatly affects the power transfer and efficiency of the IPT. This paper proposes a new magnetic coupler with vertical spiral coils and ferrite PQI cores for the IPT system of UAVs, which can enhance the magnetic coupling and improve the performance of the IPT system. Finite element simulations are used to investigate the magnetic field distribution and coupling capability of the proposed magnetic coupler. In addition, an experimental platform is built to prove the validity of the IPT system using the proposed magnetic coupler. The results show that the coupling coefficient can reach 0.98, and the system transfer efficiency is... [more]

Evaluation of Primary User Power Impact for Joint Optimization of Energy Efficiency in Cognitive Radio Networks
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, optimal sensing ratio, primary user reactivation, sensing performance, spectrum sensing.
Energy efficiency (EE) is of great concern in cognitive radio networks since the throughput and energy consumption of secondary users (SUs) vary with the sensing time. However, the conditions of the detection probability and false alarm probability should be respected to better protect primary users (PUs) and to improve the sensing performance of SUs. Additionally, the PUs’ minimum averaged power provision should also be regarded as a key problem of interactive linking to SUs. Therefore, an integrated design between the PU and SUs is desired for the coordination of the whole cognitive radio system, especially regarding the satisfaction of EE and performance metrics. This study formulates sensing constraints in a unified way and calculates the minimum SNR of SUs, based on which the essential PU power provision is computed. Furthermore, EE is proved as a decreasing function with the PU’s active ratio, where the maximum EE is obtained corresponding to the minimum QoS requirements of the s... [more]

Exergoeconomic Optimization of Polymeric Heat Exchangers for Geothermal Direct Applications
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: direct heating system, exergoeconomic analysis, geothermal energy, plastic plate heat exchanger.
The highest economic costs of a geothermal plant are basically related to well drilling and heat exchanger maintenance cost due to the chemical aggressiveness of geothermal fluid. The possibility to reduce these costs represents an opportunity to push toward geothermal plants development. Such challenges are even more important in the sites with a low-medium temperature geothermal fluids (90−120 °C) availability, where the use of these fluids for direct thermal uses can be very advantageous. For this reason, in this study, a direct geothermal heating system for a building will be investigated by considering a plastic plate heat exchanger. The choice of a polymeric heat exchanger for this application is upheld by its lower purchase cost and its higher fouling resistance than the common metal heat exchangers, overcoming the economic issues related to conventional geothermal plant. Thus, the plastic plate heat exchanger was, firstly, geometrical and thermodynamical modeled and, after, exe... [more]

Design of Low-Cost Ethanol Production Medium from Syngas: An Optimization of Trace Metals for Clostridium ljungdahlii
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bioethanol, Clostridium ljungdahlii, pareto chart, Plackett-Burman, syngas fermentation, trace elements, Wood-Ljungdahl pathway.
Syngas fermentation via the Wood-Ljungdahl (WL) pathway is a promising approach for converting gaseous pollutants (CO and CO2) into high-value commodities. Because the WL involves several enzymes with trace metal components, it requires an adequate supply of micronutrients in the fermentation medium for targeted bioprocessing such as bioethanol production. Plackett-Burman statistical analysis was performed to examine the most efficient trace elements (Ni, Mg, Ca, Mn, Co, Cu, B, W, Zn, Fe, and Mo) and their concentrations for Clostridium ljungdahlii on ethanol production. Overall, 1.5 to 2.5 fold improvement in ethanol production could be achieved with designed trace element concentrations. The effects of tungsten and copper on ethanol and biomass production were determined to be the most significant, respectively. The model developed was statistically significant and has the potential to significantly decrease the cost of trace element solutions by 18−22%. This research demonstrates th... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ambient temperature, circulating cooling water system, operating cost, optimal water supply temperature, optimization model, working medium flow.
The circulating cooling water system is widely used in various industrial production fields, and its operating cost largely depends on external factors, such as ambient temperature and working medium flow. Considering the relative elevation of the heat exchanger, this study establishes a total system operation cost analysis and optimization model based on the superstructure method. The model uses ambient dry bulb temperature, ambient wet bulb temperature, and working medium flow as random variables. Water supply temperature is adopted as the decision variable, and the minimum operating cost of the system is used as the objective function. An analysis of the effect of the three random variables on the operation cost shows that the effect of ambient dry bulb temperature on the operation cost is negligible, and the effect of ambient wet bulb temperature and working medium flow on the operation cost is significant. In addition, a control equation of water supply temperature is established... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: apriori algorithm, association rules, gas risks warning, k-means algorithm, outlier detection.
In the process of gas prediction and early warning, outliers in the data series are often discarded. There is also a likelihood of missing key information in the analysis process. To this end, this paper proposes an early warning model of coal face gas multifactor coupling relationship analysis. Optimizing the initial cluster center of all data is achieved using the cluster center of the preorder data subset, so as to optimize the k-means algorithm. The optimized algorithm is used to filter out the outliers in the collected data set to obtain the data set of outliers. Then, the Apriori algorithm is optimized so that it can identify more important information that appears less frequently in the events. It is also used to mine and analyze the association rules of abnormal values and obtain interesting association rule events among the gas outliers i... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: analytic model, CHP, design optimization, figure of merit, heat exchanger, thermoelectric, waste heat recovery.
We analyzed the potential of thermoelectrics for electricity generation in a combined heat and power (CHP) waste heat recovery system. The state-of-the-art organic Rankine cycle CHP system provides hot water and space heating while electricity is also generated with an efficiency of up to 12% at the MW scale. Thermoelectrics, in contrast, will serve smaller and distributed systems. Irreversible thermal resistances connected to the thermoelectric legs determine the energy conversion performance. The exit temperatures of fluids through the heat exchanger are important for the system efficiency to match the applications. Multi-Objective Immune-Commensal-Evolutionary Programming for Total Production Cost and Total System Loss Minimization via Integrated Economic Dispatch and Distributed Generation Installation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial immune system, commensalism, distributed generation installation, economic dispatch, evolutionary programming, multi-objective optimization, symbiotic organisms search.
Economic Dispatch (ED) problems have been solved using single-objective optimization for so long, as Grid System Operators (GSOs) previously only focused on minimizing the total production cost. In modern power systems, GSOs require not only optimizing the total production cost but also, at the same time, optimizing other important objectives, such as the total emissions of the greenhouse gasses, total system loss and voltage stability. This requires a suitable multi-objective optimization approach in ensuring the ED solution produced is satisfying all the objectives. This paper presents a new multi-objective optimization technique termed Multi-Objective Immune-Commensal-Evolutionary Programming (MOICEP) for minimizing the total production cost and total system loss via integrated Economic Dispatch and Distributed Generation installation (ED-DG). This involved the application of a weighted-sum multi-objective approach that combined with an optimization technique called Immune-Commensal... [more]

Co-Optimization of CO2 Storage and Enhanced Gas Recovery Using Carbonated Water and Supercritical CO2
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: carbonated water, CCUS, CO2 storage, enhanced gas recovery, Optimization.
CO2-based enhanced gas recovery (EGR) is an appealing method with the dual benefit of improving recovery from mature gas reservoirs and storing CO2 in the subsurface, thereby reducing net emissions. However, CO2 injection for EGR has the drawback of excessive mixing with the methane gas, therefore, reducing the quality of gas produced and leading to an early breakthrough of CO2. Although this issue has been identified as a major obstacle in CO2-based EGR, few strategies have been suggested to mitigate this problem. We propose a novel hybrid EGR method that involves the injection of a slug of carbonated water before beginning CO2 injection. While still ensuring CO2 storage, carbonated water hinders CO2-methane mixing and reduces CO2 mobility, therefore delaying breakthrough. We use reservoir simulation to assess the feasibility and benefit of the proposed method. Through a structured design of experiments (DoE) framework, we perform sensitivity analysis, uncertainty assessment, and opti... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: AC breakdown characteristics, arresters, electric field calculation, icing conditions, lightning protection insulator.
As a result of lightning strikes, pollution, and ice, overhead distribution wires might be short-circuited and trip. As a result, researchers have developed a new lightning protection composite insulator. There is still a need to test its pollution and icing performance. Based on the finite element and field test method, this paper studies the electric field distribution and AC (Alternating Current) breakdown characteristics of polluted novel lightning protection insulators under icing conditions. Optimization of Window Design for Daylight and Thermal Comfort in Cold Climate Conditions
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: daylight, energy optimization, IDA ICE, thermal comfort.
Window design affects the overall performance of a building. It is important to include window design during the initial stages of a project since it influences the performance of daylight and thermal comfort as well as the energy demand for heating and cooling. The Norwegian building code facilitates two alternative methods for achieving a sufficient daylight, and only guidelines for adequate indoor thermal comfort. In this study, a typical Norwegian residential building was modeled to investigate whether the criteria and methods facilitate consistent and good performance through different scenario changes and furthermore, how the national regulations compare to European standards. A better insulated and more air-tight building has usually a lower annual heating demand, with only a marginal decrease in the daylight performance when the window design is unchanged. A more air-tight construction increases the risk of overheating, even in cold climates. This study confirms that a revision... [more]
