February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: adaptive-ECMS strategy, predictive energy management, range-extended vehicles, start–stop optimization, vehicle velocity forecast
Range-extended Electric Vehicles (REVs) have become popular due to their lack of emissions while driving in urban areas, and the elimination of range anxiety when traveling long distances with a combustion engine as the power source. The fuel consumption performance of REVs depends greatly on the energy management strategy (EMS). This article proposes a practical energy management solution for REVs based on an Adaptive Equivalent Fuel Consumption Minimization Strategy (A-ECMS), wherein the equivalent factor is dynamically optimized by the battery’s State of Charge (SoC) and traffic information provided by Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Furthermore, a penalty function is incorporated with the A-ECMS strategy to achieve the quasi-optimal start−stop control of the range extender. The penalty function is designed based on more precise vehicle velocity forecasting through a nonlinear autoregressive network with exogeneous input (NARX). A model of the studied REV is established in... [more]

February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: convex optimization, exact convex relaxations, power flow, wind farms
Offshore wind farms have boomed worldwide due to the sustainability of wind power and ocean resources. Power grid companies should consider the wind power consumption problem with more power generated. Power-flow calculation is the most fundamental tool in energy management. This paper proposes the convex-relaxation-based method for offshore wind farms’ power flow. In this method, the traditional equations’ problem solving is transferred into standard convex optimization, which can be solved efficiently with unique optimum. Second-order cone relaxations are imposed to describe the quadratic relationship. The exactness of the relaxation is guaranteed with the special definition of the objective function. The superiority of the proposed method is tested on the case study, for which a computational efficiency improvement is shown. Moreover, the reliability of the power-flow results is verified within the precision tolerance.

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: amount of emissions created, conveyor belt, energy consumption, optimization of the haulage system, underground mining plant
One of the main elements that shape the production process in an underground mining plant is, in the broadest sense of the word, transport. Currently, a large amount of rolling stock from cable cars or suspended railways is maintained in mining plants, along with extensive infrastructure used for transporting crew and materials. The development of conveyor belt transport systems, as well as system process management, is increasing efficiency levels. Mining transport is a complex process, requiring large amounts of energy, which incurs significant production costs. We conduct a comparative analysis of the human transport system using a suspended railway with belt transport at Lubelski Węgiel “Bogdanka” Spółka Akcyjna (the largest hard coal mine in Poland), in terms of energy efficiency levels. We found that the process of transporting the crew in an underground mining plant to the production site using a conveyor belt system was less energy-intensive, and therefore created less emission... February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electromagnetic field optimization (EFO), multilevel inverter, selective harmonic elimination
Multilevel inverters (MLIs), both symmetrical and asymmetrical, have shown to be useful in a number of applications. Continuous improvements in output voltage waveform control and converter size reduction have made this practicable. The output voltage is managed using a low frequency modulation technique called selective harmonic elimination. This paper investigates an unique selective harmonic elimination (SHE) control that uses electromagnetic field optimization (EFO). The major features of the EFO guarantee that the targeted harmonics are removed via computation of the ideal angles, such as its easier compilation procedure and capacity for single-stage local and global searches. Additionally, a comparison with well-known algorithms namely Genetic Algorithm and Differential Evolution in accessing performance based on Total Harmonic Distortion demonstrates the EFO’s competence. The suggested algorithm’s performance has been tested using a symmetric cascaded H-Bridge MLI structure. In... [more]

There are considerable power losses in Indonesia’s SUMBAGUT 150 kV transmission High Voltage Alternating Current Network (HVAC) system. These power losses and the voltage profile are critical problems in the transmission network system. This research provides one possible way to reduce power losses involving the use of a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) network system. Determining the location to convert HVAC into HVDC is very important. The authors of the current study used Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to determine the optimal location on the 150 kV SUMBAGUT HVAC transmission network system. The study results show that, before using the HVDC network system, the power loss was 68.41 MW. On the other hand, power loss with the conversion of one transmission line to HVDC was 57.31 MW for “Paya Pasir−Paya Geli” (efficiency 16.22%), 51.79 MW for “Paya Pasir−Sei Rotan” (efficiency 24.29%), and 60.8 MW for “Renun−Sisikalang” (efficiency 110.12%). The power loss with the conversion of t... [more]

Solar pyrolysis is a promising technology as it combines use of biomass and solar energy to generate transportable and storable fuels, as well as chemicals of interest. The most desired product of rapid pyrolysis of microalgae is bio-oil, a liquid and viscous mixture composed of hundreds of chemicals. Among these compounds are many oxygenates that usually bring some undesirable properties to bio-oil, e.g., instability. This study aimed to investigate the potential of Spirulina platensis to produce bio-oil from catalytic solar pyrolysis assisted by Fresnel lens. The performance of the mixed oxides derived from hydrocalumite was evaluated, aiming to improve the yield and quality of the liquid product. The effects of reaction time and percentage of catalyst on the product distribution and bio-oil composition were quantified. An optimization study was performed using the differential evolution (DE) algorithm in order to maximize the bio-oil yield. The results showed that the highest liquid... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: interval uncertainty, linear, nonlinear, security limits method
This paper expresses the output power of renewable generators and load demand as interval data and develops the interval economic dispatch (IED), as well as interval reactive power optimization (IRPO) models. The two models are generalized into a specific type of linear interval programming (LIP) and nonlinear interval programming (NLIP), respectively. A security limits method (SLM) is proposed to solve LIP and NLIP problems. As for the LIP, the maximum radii of the interval variables are first calculated by the optimizing-scenarios method (OSM) for defining security limits, and the LIP is transformed into deterministic linear programming (LP), for which its constraints are the security limits, which can be solved by the simplex method. As for the NLIP, Monte Carlo simulations were used to obtain the maximum radii of the interval variables, and the average interval ratio of the interval variables is defined to compute the security limits for transforming the NLIP to deterministic nonli... Slotting effect in electric machines reduces flux per pole that effect magnetic flux density distribution in the air gap which induces harmonics in magnetic flux density causing flux pulsation, that in turn generates dominant torque pulsation in the form of cogging torque and torque ripples. To overcome the abovesaid demerits, a novel outer rotor field-excited flux-switching machine (OR-FSFSM) with a combined semi-closed and open slots stator is proposed in this study. The developed OR-FEFSM offers a high-power factor, due to the utilization of the semi-closed slot for armature coils. The open slot stator structure was chosen for the field excitation coil, which effectively suppresses leakage reluctance that causes flux pulsation. Thus, the influence of torque ripples is reduced, and the average torque is improved. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed OR-FEFSM, a detailed study of stator slot and rotor pole combinations are performed. Based on simplified mathematic... [more]

A variety of variables influence the optimal tilt angle of a PV panel, including the characteristics of the panel, the local seasonal weather variations, the number of daylight hours the panel is exposed to and the ambient temperature of the surroundings. In this study, the optimal PV tilt angle and maximum energy output of PV arrays was calculated for every county in the United States and compared against the practice of setting the PV tilt angle to be equivalent to the latitude angle of the PV geographic location. A PVWatts API, implemented through Python, was used in conjunction with the SciPy optimization package to find the optimal tilt angle for each county using a direct line search algorithm. Most counties (95.8%) showed a difference between the location latitude and the optimal tilt of more than one degree. Many counties showed a deviation of 2−6° lower than the location latitude. The variation of daylight hours had the largest influence on tilt angle and seasonal cloud cover... [more]

Keywords: analytical method, NSGA-II, pareto optimization, SPMSM
In contrast to internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs) obtain the power required for the compressor of air conditioning system from an electric source. Therefore, an optimal design for electric motor, the main component of an electric compressor, is essential for improving EV mileage. A multi-objective optimal design is required because the characteristics of the motor are in a trade-off relationship with each other. When the finite element method (FEM) is used, multi-objective optimal designs for the motor take a significant amount of time because of the diversity analyses required for the optimal-model search. To solve this problem, in this study, a multi-objective optimal design method of an SPMSM for an EVs air conditioner system compressor was proposed and applied using the NSGA-II and an analytical method. The validity of the proposed method was confirmed by comparing the characteristics of the optimal design model with those of the initially designed model.
