A Tensile Rotary Airborne Wind Energy System—Modelling, Analysis and Improved Design
Oliver Tulloch, Hong Yue, Abbas Mehrad Kazemi Amiri, Roderick Read.
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airborne wind energy (AWE), multi-spring dynamic model, optimisation design, rotary kite turbine, spring-disc dynamic model, steady-state TRPT model, system analysis, tensile rotary power transmission (TRPT), tether drag model.
A unique rotary kite turbine designed with tensile rotary power transmission (TRPT) is introduced in this work. Power extraction, power transmission and the ground station are modelled in a modular framework. The TRPT system is the key component of power transmission, for which three models with different levels of complexity are proposed. The first representation is based on the stationary state of the system, in which the external and internal torques of a TRPT section are in equilibrium, referred to as the steady-state TRPT model. The second representation is a simplified spring-disc model for dynamic TRPT, and the third one is a multi-spring model with higher degrees of freedom and more flexibility in describing TRPT dynamics. To assess the torque loss on TRPT, a simple tether drag model is written for the steady-state TRPT, followed by an improved tether drag model for the dynamic TRPT. This modular framework allows for multiple versions of the rotor, tether aerodynamics and TRPT... [more]
An Aero-Structural Model for Ram-Air Kite Simulations
Paul Thedens, Roland Schmehl.
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airborne wind energy, dynamic relaxation, fluid-structure interaction, ram-air kite, SkySails Power, virtual wind tunnel.
Similar to parafoils, ram-air kites are flexible membrane wings inflated by the apparent wind and supported by a bridle line system. A major challenge in estimating the performance of these wings using a computer model is the strong coupling between the airflow around the wing and the deformation of the membrane structure. In this paper, we introduce a staggered coupling scheme combining a structural finite element solver using a dynamic relaxation technique with a potential flow solver. The developed method proved numerically stable for determining the equilibrium shape of the wing under aerodynamic load and is thus suitable for performance measurement and load estimation. The method was validated with flight data provided by SkySails Power. Measured forces on the tether and steering belt of the robotic kite control pod showed good resemblance with the simulation results. As expected for a potential flow solver, the kite’s glide ratio was overestimated by 10−15%, and the measured teth... [more]
Comprehensive Thermodynamic Evaluation of the Natural Gas-Fired Allam Cycle at Full Load
Lorenzo Colleoni, Alessio Sindoni, Silvia Ravelli.
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Allam cycle, decarbonization, net electric efficiency, thermodynamic modeling.
In this study, thermodynamic modeling and simulations were used to optimize the design point performance of the Allam cycle. The topic fits perfectly with the strategies for power sector decarbonization toward net zero emission. In fact, it offers an environmentally friendlier alternative to natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) plants. The focus is on oxyfuel combustion that, combined with supercritical CO2 (sCO2) stream as working fluid, produces high-purity CO2, electricity, and water by means of a highly recuperated Brayton cycle. The former is ready for sequestration, pipeline injection, or other applications, such as enhanced oil recovery or industrial processes. Being designed within the last decade, large-scale plants are poorly documented in the published literature and not yet ready for operation. Accordingly, a thermodynamic model was developed for a net power (Pn) output of 300 MW. After validation against the little data available from academic studies, simulation sets were co... [more]

Pengcheng Ni, Zhiyuan Ye, Can Cao, Zhimin Guo, Jian Zhao, Xing He.
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: collaborative optimal control, cooperative game, digital twins, wide-area distributed energy.
With the wide use of renewable energy sources and the requirement for energy storage technology, the field of power systems is facing the need for further technological innovation. This paper proposes a wide-area distributed energy model based on digital twins. This model was constructed to more fully optimize the coordination of wide-area distributed energy in order to rationally deploy and utilize new energy units. Moreover, the minimization of the power deviation between the dispatch command and the actual power regulation output was also taken into account. In contrast to previous dispatch research, the cooperative game co-optimization algorithm was applied to this model, enabling a distributed approach that can quickly obtain a high-quality power command scheduling scheme. Finally, the simulation and comparison experiments using this algorithm with the wide-area distributed energy (WDE) model showed that it had the advantages of significantly reducing the tracking error, average e... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid-following converter, grid-forming converter, power coupling, short circuit ratio, static power transmission limit.
The development trend of high shares of renewables and power electronics has increased the demand for new energy converters in the power system, but there is a lack of systematic research on the stability of different types of converters when transmitting power, which is worth exploring in depth. In this study, the power transfer capabilities of grid-forming and grid-following converters are investigated separately through an equivalent circuit diagram and phasor diagram when connected to the grid, and a quantitative relationship between converters’ power transmission limit and short circuit ratio under static stability conditions is obtained, leading to the conclusion that, in terms of power transmission, grid-forming converters are more suitable for weak grids with high damping and low inertia, whereas grid-following converters are more suitable for strong grids with high inertia. The conclusions are further verified by constructing the converter grid-connected models for different g... [more]

Keywords: blockage, LMFR, MOOSE, Pronghorn, SFR, subchannel, validation.
Pronghorn-SC is a subchannel code within the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). Initially designed to simulate flows in water-cooled, square lattice, subchannel assemblies, Pronghorn-SC has been expanded to simulate liquid-metal-cooled flows in triangular lattices, hexagonal subchannel assemblies. For this purpose, the algorithm of Pronghorn-SC was adapted to solve the subchannel equations as they are applicable to a hexagonal wire-wrapped sodium-cooled fast reactor. Cheng−Todreas models for pressure drop and cross-flow models were adopted and a coolant heat conduction term was added. To solve these equations, an improved implicit algorithm was developed robust enough to deal with the numerical issues, associated with low flow and recirculation phenomena. To confirm the prediction capability of Pronghorn-SC, calculations and comparisons with available experimental data of 19- and 37-pin assemblies were performed, as well as other subchannel codes. Finally, a f... [more]
A Direct Numerical Simulation Assessment of Turbulent Burning Velocity Parametrizations for Non-Unity Lewis Numbers
Vishnu Mohan, Marco Herbert, Markus Klein, Nilanjan Chakraborty.
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct numerical simulations, flame surface area, Lewis number, turbulent burning velocity, turbulent premixed Bunsen flame.
The predictions of turbulent burning velocity parameterizations for non-unity Lewis number flames have been assessed based on a single-step chemistry Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) database of premixed Bunsen flames for different values of characteristic Lewis numbers ranging from 0.34 to 1.2. It has been found that the definition of the turbulent burning velocity is strongly dependent on the choice of projected flame brush area in the Bunsen burner configuration. The highest values of normalized turbulent burning velocity are obtained when the projected flame brush area is evaluated using the area of the isosurface of the Reynolds averaged reaction progress variable of 0.1 out of different options, namely the Favre averaged and Reynolds averaged isosurfaces of reaction progress variable of 0.5 and integral of the gradient of Favre and Reynolds averaged reaction progress variable. Because of the axisymmetric nature of the mean flame brush, the normalized turbulent burning velocity h... [more]
The Induction Motor MRAS-Based Speed Estimator Capable of Modelling the Slip Frequency Dependent Variability of the Rotor Impedance
Grzegorz Utrata, Jaroslaw Rolek.
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep-bar effect, equivalent circuit, induction motors, MRAS, speed estimation.
Speed feedback is indispensable not only for closed-loop controlled induction motors (IM) but also for the state monitoring systems of open-loop controlled IMs. Replacing speed sensors with speed estimations has many advantages including, e.g., hardware complexity reduction, sensor cabling elimination, and reduction of IM drive costs. From the various methods for IM speed estimation proposed in the literature, the model reference adaptive system (MRAS)-based speed estimator stands out because of its straightforward synthesis technique and lower computational complexity. On the other hand, this estimator is inherently sensitive to mismatching of IM equivalent circuit parameters. During transients, when the slip frequency cannot be temporarily controlled over the assumed operating point, rotor impedance varies with the slip frequency changes. This phenomenon is even more significant for open-loop controlled high-slip IMs (NEMA design D IMs), which operate under the cycling load like in,... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD analysis, combustion chamber modification, combustion simulation, cylinder temperature, heat release rate.
This study numerically analyses the effects of chamber modifications to investigate the improvement of in-cylinder combustion characteristics of the diesel engine using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. Five different modified chambers, namely, the double swirl combustion chamber (DSCC), bathtub combustion chamber (BTCC), double toroidal re-entrant combustion chamber (DTRCC), shallow depth combustion chamber (SCC), and stepped bowl combustion chamber (SBCC) were developed and compared with a reference flat combustion chamber (FCC). The effects of chamber modifications on temperature formation, velocity distribution, injection profiles, and in-cylinder turbulent motions (swirl and tumble ratio) were investigated. During the compression stroke, near top dead centre, the SCC showed a peak temperature of 970 K, followed by the FCC (968 K), SBCC (967 K), and DTRCC (748 K to 815 K). The DSCC and the SCC showed a high swirl ratio above 0.6, whereas the DTRCC and the BTCC showed a... [more]

Keywords: ensemble methods, Gulong sag, machine learning models, random forest, shale lithofacies, Songliao basin, well log, XGBoost.
Lithofacies identification and classification are critical for characterizing the hydrocarbon potential of unconventional resources. Although extensive applications of machine learning models in predicting lithofacies have been applied to conventional reservoir systems, the effectiveness of machine learning models in predicting clay-rich, lacustrine shale lithofacies has yet to be tackled. Here, we apply machine learning models to conventional well log data to automatically identify the shale lithofacies of Gulong Shale in the Songliao Basin. The shale lithofacies were classified into six types based on total organic carbon and mineral composition data from core analysis and geochemical logs. We compared the accuracy of Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Random Forest models. We mitigated the bias of imbalanced data by applying oversampling algorithms. Our results show that ensemble methods (XGBoost and Random Forest) hav... [more]
A Literature Review on Methods and Metrics for the Analysis of Outdoor Air Displacement Conditions in the Urban Environment

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, natural ventilation, street canyon, turbulence models, urban building design, urban ventilation, urban ventilation metrics, wind tunnel.
The ongoing pandemic has driven the attention of both policy makers and professionals of the building sector towards the need for proper ventilation of the indoor environment. Despite accurate ventilation control only being available with mechanical ventilation systems, in several countries worldwide the renovation of indoor air relies mainly on natural solutions. In this context, in the design of new or renovated buildings, conventional natural ventilation rates are typically assumed to be in agreement with available technical standards, sometimes regardless of the actual external conditions. For instance, local wind speed and direction, as well as buoyancy-driven air displacements, are not considered, even if they can significantly affect the ventilation efficacy for the designed buildings. Moreover, the local outdoor temperature and the presence of pollutants are rarely accounted for, even though they can represent interesting inputs not only for naturally ventilated buildings but a... Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, experiment, mass transfer, membrane humidifier, POD, Surrogate Model.
To achieve high efficiency and low degradation of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC), it is necessary to maintain an appropriate level of humidification in the fuel cell membrane. Thus, membrane humidifiers are typically used in PEMFC systems. Parameter studies are important to evaluate membrane humidifiers under various operating conditions to reduce the amount of physical tests. However, simulative studies are computationally expensive when using detailed models. To reduce the computational cost, surrogate models are set up. In our study, a 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of a hollow fibre membrane humidifier is presented and validated using measurement data. Based on the results of the validated CFD model, a surrogate model of the humidifier is constructed using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) in combination with different interpolation methods. To evaluate the surrogate models, their results are compared against reference solutions from the CFD model. Our res... [more]

Keywords: electric generators, induced electric potential, reverse claw pole, vehicle.
A new type of brushless reverse claw-pole electrically excited generator is proposed for the problems of the low sine degree of the induced electromotive force waveform and the high harmonic content of the output voltage of the conventional electrically excited claw-pole generator. The design uses the equivalent magnetic network method to establish the equivalent magnetic circuit model of the motor and determines the equation for calculating the magnetoresistance of the isosceles trapezoidal variable section claw-pole structure. It derives the mathematical model of the no-load induced electric potential of the generator and completes to optimize the motor parameters with the no-load induced electric potential as the target. This study shows that the brushless reverse claw-pole electrically excited generator has the advantages of uniform magnetic field distribution, high harmonic fundamental amplitude of induced electromotive force and low harmonic content. It can better meet the applic... [more]

Keywords: current injection power flow, polar coordinates, power flow analysis, PV representation.
This article presents an alternative Newton-Raphson power flow method version. This method has been developed based on current injection equations formulated in polar coordinates. Likewise, the fast decoupled power flow, elaborated using current injection (BX version), is presented. These methods are tested considering electrical power systems composed of 57-, 118-, and 300-bus, as well as a realistic system of 787-bus. For the robustness analysis, simulations were performed considering different loading conditions and R/X ratios of the transmission line. Based on the simulations that were realized, there is evidence that the performance of the proposed current injection methods is similar to the power injection methods.

Keywords: emulsion stability, heavy oil reservoir, numerical simulation, shut off capacity, W/O emulsion.
Viscosity-reducer flooding is an effective method to improve oil recovery after the water flooding of heavy oil, and water-in-oil emulsion (W/O emulsion) is easily formed during this process. W/O emulsion has a strong ability to improve mobility ratio and block off high permeability layers, which can effectively improve sweep coefficient and enhance oil recovery. The microscopic visual glass model is mainly used to study the microscopic oil displacement mechanism of dilute oil; however, there are few studies on the emulsification mechanism and influencing factors of heavy oil. The purpose of this paper is to study the mechanism of heavy oil emulsification caused by viscosity reducer at the microscopic level, and the effect of emulsification on heavy oil recovery. The visible physical experiments with the glass microscopic models with different permeability and pore sizes were carried out to study the mechanism and main controlling factors of emulsification and the oil displacement effe... Keywords: Alberta Basin, CO2 sequestration, coupled 3D modeling, fracturing, induced seismicity, injectivity, mechanical earth models, subsurface risk.
Reliable regional-scale permeability data and minimum sustained injectivity rate estimates are key parameters required to mitigate economic risk in the site selection, design, and development of commercial-scale carbon sequestration projects, but are seldom available. We used extensive publicly available disposal well data from over 4000 disposal wells to assess and history-match regional permeability estimates and provide the frequency distribution for disposal well injection rates in each of 66 disposal formations in the Alberta Basin. We then used core data and laboratory analyses from over 3000 cores to construct 3D geological, geomechanical and petrophysical models for 22 of these disposal formations. We subsequently used these models and the history-matched regional permeability estimates to conduct coupled geomechanical and reservoir simulation modeling (using the ResFrac™, Palo Alto, CA, USA, numerical simulator) to assess: (i) well performance in each formation when injecting... April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: generation mechanism, Longmaxi Formation shale, numerical simulation, overpressure evolution.
Strong overpressure conditions are widely distributed in the deep Longmaxi Formation (Fm) shale reservoirs in the Southern Sichuan Basin, with pressure coefficients ranging from 1.75 to 2.45. Overpressure plays a positive role in the high yield of shale gas, but a detailed study of its generation mechanism, evolution history, and potential impact on pore development is still lacking. This study’s evidence from theoretical analysis and the logging response method indicates that hydrocarbon generation expansion is the main generation mechanism for strong overpressure. Through the combined analysis of basin modeling, inclusions analysis, and numerical simulation, pressure evolution at different stages is quantitatively characterized. The results show that, during the shale’s long-term subsidence process, the shale reservoir’s pressure coefficient increased to 1.40 because of oil generated by kerogen pyrolysis. Then it increased to 1.92 due to gas generated by residual oil cracking. During... [more]

Keywords: information quality, information quality assessment, information quality management, traffic light power system, uncertainty modelling.
Information quality management (IQM) is crucial in critical Information and Communications Technology (ICT) systems since our lives and health often depend on the quality of information that the systems provide. Especially in the field of transport, we can speak about critical systems. Worldwide, a small number of scientists take on these problems. This is because information quality (IQ) measurement is a very complex process, and IQM is impossible without IQ measurement. In the article, the authors used a method for IQ measurement created by one of them. This method for IQ measurement makes it possible to create IQM and IQ assessment (IQA). This article proposes a method for IQA that makes IQM possible. The authors demonstrated the possibility of searching for IQ modelling imperfections and offered a computation example for a road traffic light power system. In the final section authors present simulation results for two models. The results of this research can be used to optimise inf... [more]
Simulation of Series Resistance Increase through Solder Layer Cracking in Si Solar Cells under Thermal Cycling

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: FE simulation, series resistance, Si solar cell, solder layer cracking, thermal cycling.
In solar cell modules, thermal cycling stresses can cause cracking in the ribbon wire, leading to an increase in series resistance and a drop in the power output of the module. Quantitative analysis was conducted to study the increase in series resistance, considering two cracking models: continuous and random. In the continuous model, it was expected that if all the ribbon wires on the front side of the module cracked, the current would decrease linearly from 0 to 100%, and the series resistance would increase exponentially to infinity. In the random crack model, the current dropped slowly, and the series resistance increased less compared with that in the continuous one. A mathematical model based on the bypass mechanism of the currents was proposed to explain the differences between the two models. The study found that cracking in the solder layer under thermal cycling can be described by a combination of continuous and random models, which can represent the upper and lower levels o... [more]

Keywords: crude oil sea–river transshipment, discrete event system modeling, entity–relationship diagram, witness simulation software, Yangtze River Basin.
China’s Yangtze River Basin has an increasingly strong demand for crude oil. As a seaborne import port for crude oil, Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is under pressure to undertake the transshipment of crude oil to various oil terminals in the Yangtze River Basin. To alleviate the stress of crude oil transportation in Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, the port operator proposed the crude oil sea−river transshipment scheme in Nantong Port. Therefore, this paper aims to verify the feasibility of this scheme. We used the discrete event system modeling and entity relationship diagram method to construct the hierarchical and concept models of the Yangtze River Basin’s crude oil sea−river transportation system. Furthermore, we developed corresponding simulation modules on the Witness platform and carried out a simulation experiment of the crude oil sea−river transfer scheme. In the experiment, we analyzed the influence of the transshipment ratio on berth utilization, waiting time, and sailing time of other ports b... [more]
CFD-Based Prediction of Combustion Dynamics and Nonlinear Flame Transfer Functions for a Swirl-Stabilized High-Pressure Combustor

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, instability, network, nonlinear, thermoacoustics, turbulence.
Thermoacoustic instabilities in gasturbine combustor systems can be predicted in the design phase with a thermoacoustic network model. In this model, the coupling between acoustic pressure fluctuations and the combustion rate is described by the Flame Transfer Function. The present paper introduces a new, efficient, and robust method for deriving the FTF from CFD predictions by means of a discrete multi-frequency sinusoidal fuel flow excitation method. The CFD-based FTF result compares well with experimental data for the time delay, but for the gain, only up to 400 Hz. Above 400 Hz, the CFD result reveals a smooth low-amplitude gain, which is not found in the measured data. A novel, accurate continuous correlation function for the FTF gain is computed based on the results for discrete frequencies. When this is implemented into a 1D acoustic network model, the stability map shows, below 600 Hz, two eigenfrequencies, by both the experiment and CFD-based FTF, that are identical. The CFD-b... Keywords: coupled electromagnetic–thermal modelling, demagnetization, flux gaps, irreversible demagnetization, modular SPM machine.
This paper presents coupled electromagnetic (EM)−thermal modelling of the steady-state dynamic performances, such as torque speed curve and the efficiency map, for surface-mounted permanent magnet machines. One important feature of such a model is that it considers the demagnetization caused by magnet temperature rise at different rotor speeds. EM-only simulations, which often assume that the machines operate under constant temperature, have been widely used in the literature. However, the interaction between EM and thermal performances could lead to very different dynamic performance prediction. This is because the material properties, e.g., magnet remanence, coercivity, and copper resistivity are temperature-dependent. The temperature rise within electrical machines reduces torque/power density, PM eddy current losses, and iron losses but increases copper loss. Therefore, the coupled EM−thermal modelling is essential to determine accurate temperature variation and to obtain accurate... [more]

Assets deteriorate over time, as well as being covered, corroded, or becoming old in less obvious ways. Maintenance can extend the remaining useful life (RUL) of an asset system, but sooner or later it must surely be replaced. In this study, we propose a new RUL estimation methodology to assist in decision making for the maintenance and replacement of assets from prioritizing equipment in a renovation plan. Our methodology uses advanced data analysis techniques that consider multiple competing criteria with the goal of maximizing values of the asset throughout its life cycle, while considering the rules of remuneration and service quality of the current regulation, as well as the values at risk according to the decisions and actions taken. Experimental results with real datasets show the efficiency of the proposed approach. Finally, this work also presents the development of an analytical tool to optimize asset renewal decisions applying the RUL estimation methodology proposed and its... [more]

This paper presents an analysis and simulation of the mathematical model associated to the DC/DC Boost converter−full-bridge Buck inverter system to regulate the voltage output of the DC/DC Boost converter allowing bipolar voltages higher than the input voltage via the full-bridge Buck inverter. To validate the model, the differential flatness property is applied via the flat outputs of the system (energy for the DC/DC Boost converter and the voltage of the full-bridge Buck inverter) considering the complete dynamics, in conjunction with fixed and time-variant trajectory planning. In the simulation results, it is observed that the error signals of the states versus the reference trajectories are acceptable. Regarding the validation of the model, this is performed with open-loop simulations at the circuit level using the SimPowerSystems Toolbox of Matlab-Simulink. The simulation results validate the good performance of the system under study. In this way, the main contribution of this w... [more]
Application of the Calcium Looping Process for Thermochemical Storage of Variable Energy

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calcium looping, CO2 storage, Energy Storage, supercritical CO2.
The calcium looping (CaL) process, which exploits the reversible calcination of calcium carbonate, has been proposed as a solution to the challenges facing deployment of concentrated solar power (CSP). As an extension of the work undertaken to date, this project proposes a novel configuration of the CSP-CaL process which may offer advantages over other proposed configurations, including a reduction in process equipment requirements, elimination of pressure differentials between vessels, and a reduction in compression duty during the energy discharge period. The results obtained through process simulation indicate that the proposed process can achieve round-trip efficiencies in the range of 32−46% and energy storage densities in the range of 0.3−1.0 GJ/m3. These parameters are strongly dependent on the residual conversion of the CaO sorbent as well as the efficiency of the power cycles used to remove heat on the carbonator side of the process.
