Generalized Circuit Model of Shielded Capacitive Power Transfer
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacitive power transfer, Modelling, shielded capacitive power transfer.
A capacitive power transfer (CPT) system wirelessly transfers energy between coupling plates and performance issues related to CPT systems are resonance conditions, matching impedance, voltage stress, and power loss. A generalized circuit model is proposed for shielded capacitive power transfer (S-CPT) using an algebraic method. The proposed generalized S-CPT model is analyzed based on the symmetric and asymmetric configurations, and the relationship between the parameters of S-CPT is obtained with respect to the resonance condition, matching impedance, voltage stress, and efficiency. The best configuration of a symmetric S-CPT is recommended, and an asymmetric S-CPT is proposed based on the analysis results. Asymmetric-S-CPT hardware was constructed and demonstrated an operating frequency of 13.56 MHz. The hardware experimental result shows the validity and effectiveness of the proposed generalized model for designing S-CPT.

Direct Analytical Modeling for Optimal, On-Design Performance of Ejector for Simulating Heat-Driven Systems
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, ejector, Energy, heat recovery, low-grade heat, R245fa, Simulation, system, thermal.
This paper describes an ejector model for the prediction of on-design performance under available conditions. This is a direct method of calculating the optimal ejector performance (entrainment ratio or ER) without the need for iterative methods, which have been conventionally used. The values of three ejector efficiencies used to account for losses in the ejector are calculated by using a systematic approach (by employing CFD analysis) rather than the hit and trial method. Both experimental and analytical data from literature are used to validate the presented analytical model with good agreement for on-design performance. R245fa working fluid has been used for low-grade heat applications, and Engineering Equation Solver (EES) has been employed for simulating the proposed model. The presented model is suitable for integration with any thermal system model and its optimization because of its direct, non-iterative methodology. This model is a non-dimensional model and therefore requires... [more]

Recent Developments in the Modelling of Transformer Windings
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: frequency response analysis (FRA), Modelling, transformer winding.
The paper provides a review of the modelling techniques used to simulate the frequency response of transformer windings. The aim of the research and development of modelling methods was to analyze the influence of deformations and faults in the windings on the changes in the frequency response. All described methods are given with examples of the modelling results performed by the authors of this paper and from literature sources. The research is prefaced with a thorough literature review. There are described models based on lumped parameters with input data coming from direct calculations based on the winding geometry and obtained from FEM modelling software and models considering the wave phenomena in the windings. The analysis was also performed for practical problems in winding modelling: the influence of windings other than the modelled one and the influence of parallel wires in a winding.

Analysis of Performance of the Wind-Driven Pulverizing Aerator Based on Average Wind Speeds in the Conditions of Góreckie Lake
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: lake restoration, Podsiadłowski method, savonius rotor, wind energy.
In the introduction to this paper, the characteristics of Góreckie lake and the construction and operation of the wind-driven pulverizing aerator are presented. The purpose of this manuscript is to determine the efficiency of the pulverizing aerator unit in the windy conditions of Góreckie Lake. The efficiency of the pulverization aerator depends on the wind conditions at the lake. It was necessary to conduct thorough research to determine the efficiency of water flow through the pulverization segment (water pump). It was necessary to determine the rotational speed of the paddle wheel, which depended on the average wind speed. Throughout the research period, measurements of hourly average wind speed were carried out. It was possible to determine the efficiency of the machine by developing a dedicated mathematical model. The latest method was used in the research, consisting of determining the theoretical volumetric flow rates of water in the pulverizing aerator unit, based on average h... [more]

Classification of Flow Modes for Natural Convection in a Square Enclosure with an Eccentric Circular Cylinder
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: enclosure, inner cylinder, map of flow structures, natural convection.
The present study investigated the natural convection for a hot circular cylinder embedded in a cold square enclosure. The numerical simulations are performed to solve a two-dimensional steady natural convection for three Rayleigh numbers of 103, 104 and 105 at a fixed Prandtl number of 0.7. This study considered the wide range of the inner cylinder positions to identify the eccentric effect of the cylinder on flow and thermal structures. The present study classifies the flow structures according to the cylinder position. Finally, the present study provides the map for the flow structures at each Rayleigh number (Ra). The Ra = 103 and 104 form the four modes of the flow structures. These modes are classified by mainly the large circulation and inner vortices. When Ra = 105, one mode that existed at Ra = 103 and 104, disappears in the map of the flow structures. The new three modes appear, resulting in total six modes of flow structures at Ra = 105. New modes at Ra = 105 are characteriz... [more]

Experimental Investigation on the Characteristic Mobilization and Remaining Oil Distribution under CO2 Huff-n-Puff of Chang 7 Continental Shale Oil
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 huff-n-puff, NMR, oil recovery factor, pore scale, remaining oil distribution.
The Chang 7 continental shale oil reservoir is tight. The recovery factor is extremely low, the remaining oil is very high, and injecting water to improve oil recovery effectiveness is too hard. Therefore, in this paper, physical simulation experiments of CO2 huff-n-puff shale oil and NMR tests were conducted to study the cycle numbers and permeability on the recovery degree, as well as the characteristics of shale oil mobilization and the remaining oil micro distribution. The results showed that the cumulative oil recovery factors (ORFs) gradually increased in the natural logarithmic form, the single cycle ORFs decreased rapidly in exponential form with the huff-n-puff cycle number, and the biggest economic cycle numbers were between approximately 3 and 5. Furthermore, the higher the permeability, the higher the ORF, but the difference of ORF decreased between the two experimental samples with the cycles. In addition, the gap of production and recovery degree was large between the dif... [more]

Application of the BORUTA Algorithm to Input Data Selection for a Model Based on Rough Set Theory (RST) to Prediction Energy Consumption for Building Heating
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: BORUTA algorithm, building energy modeling, building load prediction, data selection, rough set theory, thermal improvement of buildings.
Energy prediction used for building heating has attracted particular attention because it is often required in the development of various strategies to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, especially those undergoing thermal improvements. The complexity, dynamics, uncertainty, and nonlinearity of existing building energy systems create a great need for modeling techniques. One of them is machine learning models, which are based on input data consisting of features that describe the objects under study. The data describing actual buildings used to build the model may be characterized by missing values, duplicate or inconsistent features, noise, and outliers. Therefore, an extremely important aspect of the prediction model development effort is the proper selection of features to simplify the prediction of energy consumption for heating. In this connection, the goal was to evaluate the usefulness of a model describing the final energy demand rate for building heating using groups... [more]

Improved IMPES Scheme for the Simulation of Incompressible Three-Phase Flows in Subsurface Porous Media
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: full mass conservation, standard IMPES scheme, three-phase flow, unbiased IMPES scheme.
In this work, an improved IMplicit Pressure and Explicit Saturation (IMPES) scheme is proposed to solve the coupled partial differential equations to simulate the three-phase flows in subsurface porous media. This scheme is the first IMPES algorithm for the three-phase flow problem that is locally mass conservative for all phases. The key technique of this novel scheme relies on a new formulation of the discrete pressure equation. Different from the conventional scheme, the discrete pressure equation in this work is obtained by adding together the discrete conservation equations of all phases, thus ensuring the consistency of the pressure equation with the three saturation equations at the discrete level. This consistency is important, but unfortunately it is not satisfied in the conventional IMPES schemes. In this paper, we address and fix an undesired and well-known consequence of this inconsistency in the conventional IMPES in that the computed saturations are conservative only for... [more]

New Deterministic Mathematical Model for Estimating the Useful Energy Output of a Medium-Sized Solar Domestic Hot Water System
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deterministic mathematical model, energy simulations, solar domestic hot water system, thermal solar collectors, useful energy output.
According to the authors of this paper, the mathematical point of view allows us to see what sometimes cannot be seen from the designer’s point of view. The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of the most important parameters (volume of heat storage tanks, daily consumption of domestic hot water, optical efficiency, heat loss coefficient, and total area of a solar collector) on the thermal power output of solar domestic hot water (SDHW) system in European climatic conditions. Three deterministic mathematical models of these relationships for Madrid, Budapest, and Helsinki were created. The database for the development of these models was carried out using computer simulations made in the TRNSYS software environment. The SDHW system located at the Bialystok University of Technology (Poland) was the source of the measurement results used to validate the simulation model. The mathematical optimization procedure showed that the maximum annual useful energy output that can be ob... [more]

Modeling and Analysis of Transient Reactive Power Characteristics of DFIG Considering Crowbar Circuit under Ultra HVDC Commutation Failure
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: commutation failure, crowbar circuit, DFIG, overvoltage protection, transient characteristic, ultra high voltage direct current.
Ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission is an effective means of long-distance transmission of renewable power generation, which has obtained a lot of research and practical applications. The commutation failure is a common DC transmission fault, which will cause the voltage amplitude of the sending ac grid in UHVDC system to first decrease then increase. The existing transient mathematical models of the wind power generation system (WPGS) are difficult to apply to scenarios where the grid voltage changes continuously. A mathematical model suitable for commutation failure is established to analyze the transient reactive power characteristics of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based WPGS with the consideration of the crowbar circuit trigger. The correctness of the mathematical model is validated by an experiment based on the control hardware-in-loop (CHIL) platform. Based on the proposed mathematical model, the influence of the crowbar parameters on the reactive... [more]

Proposed Management System and Response Estimation Algorithm for Motorway Incidents
April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: data mining, distributed sensory systems, incident response systems, IoT, knowledge mining, location management, Machine Learning, Resources Management Systems, smart algorithms.
Motorway’s personnel tasks management and incidents monitoring, and response are critical processes that contribute to the motorway’s orderly and smooth operation. Existing management practices utilize SCADA technologies that control motorway actuator systems as well as various means of personnel communications mobile technologies. Nevertheless, contemporary motorways lack a unified incident response solution that tracks resources, sends notification alerts when necessary, and automates incident resolution. This paper presents a new holistic and unified management and response system called Resources Management System (RMS). This system was originally implemented as a generic motorways resources management system for the EGNATIA ODOS motorway that uses it in Greece. The implemented RMS provides real-time resources tracking, personnel utilization algorithms, and data mining capabilities towards incident confrontation. It operates as an incidents’ collection and resources central communi... [more]

Quality and Reliability-Exploitation Modeling of Power Supply Systems
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: exploitation, power supply, power supply continuity quality, quality, reliability.
This article describes the issues related to the analysis of the reliability-exploitation of power supply systems in transport telematics devices (PSSs in TTDs). This paper characterizes solutions, which are applied in supply systems, and describes a PSS in a TTD from a main source and a standby one. This enables determining the dependencies denoting the probabilities of the system staying in full ability state, safety threat state, and safety unreliability state. A quality analysis of the PSS in TTD was conducted, and the indicator value of the supply continuity quality was evaluated. This indicator allows the demonstration of continuity quality of power supply (CQoPS) dependency on many quality dimensions, not just reliability. An example demonstrates the calculation of CQoPS factor for both the main and the standby power supply, employing three observations, each influencing the quality. The presented considerations in the field of quality and reliability-exploitation modeling of a... [more]

Impact of Geometry of Toothed Segments of the Innovative KOMTRACK Longwall Shearer Haulage System on Load and Slip during the Travel of a Track Wheel
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: load, longwall shearer haulage system, slippage, toothed segment, toothed wheel.
Longwall shearers operating in the underground mine workings move along the longwall face along the conveyor troughs. The haulage system, which is made up of two kinematic pairs in the form of track wheels installed in shearer movers, cooperating with the toothed route built in the conveyor’s throughs, is responsible for moving the shearer. The currently used solutions of longwall shearers’ haulage systems do not ensure proper cooperation of the track wheels with toothed segments, which results in failures and breakdowns in the operation of the longwall systems, causing significant financial losses. Rigid solution of the gear components used is the reason. The solution of the flexible toothed segment, allowing it to adapt to the longitudinal and transverse curvature of the AFC (armored face conveyor) route during cooperation with the track wheel, was developed as part of the research project jointly implemented by KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology, AGH University of Science and Tech... Dynamic Simulation of High-Speed Induction Motor
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: blood centrifuge, dynamic, induction motor.
In the drives of high-speed devices, such as a blood centrifuge, dynamic states also play an important role in terms of the time and quality of the tests performed. The article presents the application of modified equations resulting from the mathematical model of an induction motor to model dynamic phenomena during motor start-up, both with mains supply and with frequency start-up. The applied solution considers the phenomenon of current displacement in the rotor bar and the phenomenon of saturation. The comparison of the obtained results with the experiment shows that the method is sufficiently accurate. The obtained results can also be extended to higher power machines and to modeling other dynamic states.

Cooling Design for PEM Fuel-Cell Stacks Employing Air and Metal Foam: Simulation and Experiment
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cooling, fuel cell, metal foam, PEM, stacks.
A new study investigating the cooling efficacy of air flow inside open-cell metal foam embedded in aluminum models of fuel-cell stacks is described. A model based on a commercial stack was simulated and tested experimentally. This stack has three proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, each having an active area of 100 cm2, with a total output power of 500 W. The state-of-the-art cooling of this stack employs water in serpentine flow channels. The new design of the current investigation replaces these channels with metal foam and replaces the actual fuel cells with aluminum plates. The constant heat flux on these plates is equivalent to the maximum heat dissipation of the stack. Forced air is employed as the coolant. The aluminum foam used had an open-pore size of 0.65 mm and an after-compression porosity of 60%. Local temperatures in the stack and pumping power were calculated for various air-flow velocities in the range of 0.2−1.5 m/s by numerical simulation and were determined by... [more]

Constraints of Parametrically Defined Guide Vanes for a High-Head Francis Turbine
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Francis turbine, guide vanes, parametric design.
This paper is focused on the guide vane cascade as one of the most crucial stationary sub-systems of the hydraulic turbine, which needs to provide efficient inflow hydraulic conditions to the runner. The guide vanes direct the flow from the spiral casing and the stay vanes towards the runner, regulating the desired discharge. A parametric design tool with normalized geometrical constraints was created in MATLAB, suitable for generating guide vane cascade geometries for Francis turbines. The goal is to determine the limits of these constraints, which will lead to future faster prediction of initial guide vane configurations in the turbine optimal operating region. Several geometries are developed using preliminary design data of the turbine and are investigated using CFD simulations close to the best efficiency point (BEP) of the turbine. Numerical Simulation of Low Salinity Water Flooding on Core Samples for an Oil Reservoir in the Nam Con Son Basin, Vietnam
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: enhanced oil recovery, geochemical coupling, low salinity water flooding (LSWF), Nam Con Son Basin, numerical core flooding simulation.
Low-salinity water flooding (LSWF) is environment-friendly and operates similarly to conventional waterflooding without the need for synthetic chemical materials. The application of LSWF makes sense in Vietnam as HC production has steadily declined since 2002, and the majority of main oil fields have become near mature and mature fields. In the next years, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) should be a top priority for Petro Vietnam to boost its oil production, for which the key issue is how to select a suitable EOR technology. In this study, LSWF of the Lower Miocene sand using low salinity water from Lower Oligocene sand was investigated. Previously at the Ruby field in the Cuu Long Basin, an LSWF feasibility study was carried out based on a conventional core flooding experiment, which is time-consuming and costly. This study targets the Chim Sao field in the Nam Con Son Basin, for which a cheaper and faster assessing method is required. As a result, a numerical code written in Matlab was d... [more]

A New Model for Estimation of Bubble Point Pressure Using a Bayesian Optimized Least Square Gradient Boosting Ensemble
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bubble point pressure correlation, least square gradient boosting ensemble, Machine Learning.
Accurate estimation of crude oil Bubble Point Pressure (Pb) plays a vital rule in the development cycle of an oil field. Bubble point pressure is required in many petroleum engineering calculations such as reserves estimation, material balance, reservoir simulation, production equipment design, and optimization of well performance. Additionally, bubble point pressure is a key input parameter in most oil property correlations. Thus, an error in a bubble point pressure estimate will definitely propagate additional error in the prediction of other oil properties. Accordingly, many bubble point pressure correlations have been developed in the literature. However, they often lack accuracy, especially when applied for global crude oil data, due to the fact that they are either developed using a limited range of independent variables or developed for a specific geographic location (i.e., specific crude oil composition). Heat Capacities and Enthalpies of Normal Alkanes in an Ideal Gas State
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analytical dependences, enthalpy, heat capacity, ideal gas state, normal alkanes.
The reference literature contains data on the ideal gas-phase heat capacities and enthalpies of substances obtained experimentally. In this brief report, the highly accurate and simple unified analytical dependences of the heat capacity and enthalpy of normal alkanes larger than propane in the ideal gas state on temperature and the number of carbon atoms in a molecule are derived based on the analysis of the structure of chemical groups in the molecules and on the reference values of heat capacity and enthalpy for any two selected normal alkanes at one temperature. The dependences include a single set of coefficients for all normal alkanes and can be applied even to normal alkanes with the number of carbon atoms larger than 20, for which there is no data available. The dependences are thoroughly checked against two different sets of experimental data and two different sets of computational data obtained by low- and high-level theoretical methods: PM6 and G4. April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axisymmetric cavity, combustion efficiency, Computational Fluid Dynamics, scramjet engine, total pressure loss, transverse injection.
This paper presents the effect of cavity-based injection in an axisymmetric supersonic combustor using numerical investigation. An axisymmetric cavity-based angled and transverse injections in a circular scramjet combustor are studied. A three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) equation along with the k-ω shear-stress transport (SST) turbulence model and species transport equations are considered for the reacting flow studies. The numerical results of the non-reacting flow studies are validated with the available experimental data and are in good agreement with it. The performance of the injection system is analyzed based on the parameters like wall pressures, combustion efficiency, and total pressure loss of the scramjet combustor. Electric Shared Mobility Services during the Pandemic: Modeling Aspects of Transportation
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: COVID-19 pandemic, electric mobility, transportation modeling.
The global spread of the COVID-19 virus has led to difficulties in many branches of the economy, including significant effects on the urban transport industry. Thus, countries around the world have introduced different mobility policies during the pandemic. Due to government restrictions and the changed behaviors of transport users, companies providing modern urban mobility solutions were forced to introduce new business practices to their services. These practices are also apparent in the context of the electric shared mobility industry. Although many aspects and problems of electric shared mobility have been addressed in scientific research, pandemic scenarios have not been taken into account. Noticing this research gap, we aimed to update a previously developed model of factors that influence the operation of electric shared mobility by incorporating aspects related to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on this industry. Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Kaplan turbine, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, small water turbines.
This paper demonstrates the procedure of blade adjustment in a Kaplan-type water turbine, based on calculations of the flow system. The geometrical adjustment of a twisted blade with varying chord length is described in the study. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was used to characterise aerofoil and turbine performance. Furthermore, two turbines, with a different number of blades, were designed, manufactured, and tested experimentally. The numerical model results were then compared with the experimental data. Modeling of Ethiopian Wind Power Production Using ERA5 Reanalysis Data
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ERA5, measurement, Modelling, reanalysis, wind speed.
Ethiopia has huge wind energy potential. In order to be able to simulate the power system operation, hourly time series of wind power is needed. These can be obtained from ERA5 data but first a realistic model is needed. Therefore, in this paper ERA5 reanalysis data were used to model wind power production at two topographically different and distant regions of Ethiopian wind farms—Adama II and Ashegoda. Wind speed was extracted from the ERA5 nearest grid point, bi-linearly interpolated to farms location and statistically down-scaled to increase its resolution at the site. Finally, the speed is extrapolated to hub-height of turbine and converted to power through farm specific power curve to compare with actual data for validation. The results from the model and historical data of wind farms are compared using performance error metrics like hourly mean absolute error (MAE) and hourly root mean square error (RMSE). A Case Study of an Industrial Power Plant under Cyberattack: Simulation and Analysis
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: critical infrastructure, electric parameter, electro energetic system, power transformer, SCADA, simulation and analysis of cyber attack.
For critical infrastructures, technological developments regarding real-time data transmission and processing improve the system’s operability and reliability. However, vulnerabilities are introduced in the case of implementing new remote access methods or where redundancy is low. At the national level, most critical infrastructures are connected, and, therefore, achieving a level of security and resilience is based on identifying a multitude of risks. In this respect, the reduction of risk to acceptable levels directly affects the quality of citizens’ lives and decreases losses in the industry. This study starts from the threats to power systems, namely cyberattacks, which are much more dangerous, although less visible, to operators, and almost invisible to the public or the media. From this point of view, it was proved that the most vulnerable parts of the power system were human−machine interfaces, electrical equipment, Surveillance, Control, and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
