Impact of Dual Substrate Limitation on Biodenitrification Modeling in Porous Media
Mostafa Abaali, Jérôme Harmand, Zoubida Mghazli
November 11, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: biodenitrification, convection-diffusion-reaction equations, finite element method, Modelling
In this work, we consider a model of the biodenitrification process taking place in a spatially-distributed bioreactor, and we take into account the limitation of the kinetics by both the carbon source and the oxidized nitrogen. This model concerns a single type of bacteria growing on nitrate, which splits into adherent bacteria or free bacteria in the liquid, taking all interactions into account. The system obtained consists of four diffusion-convection-reaction equations for which we show the existence and uniqueness of a global solution. The system is approximated by a standard finite element method that satisfies an optimal a priori error estimate. We compare the results obtained for three forms of the growth function: single substrate limiting, “multiplicative” form, and “minimum” form. We highlight the limitation of the ‘ single substrate limiting model”, where the dependency of the bacterial growth on the nitrate is neglected, and find that the “minimum” model gives numerical re... Lattice Boltzmann Simulation of Ferrofluids Film Boiling
Mohammad Yaghoub Abdollahzadeh Jamalabadi
November 11, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: boiling, ferrofluids, Lattice Boltzmann method, numerical simulation
In the present investigation, two phase film boiling of ferrofluids under an external field delivered around a two-dimensional square cross-section heater was investigated using the lattice Boltzmann technique. The purpose of this work is to find the effect of magnetic field magnitude and direction on the Nusselt number in single and double heater geometry. The improving thermal efficiency in the horizontal and vertical placement of heaters is also presented. The governing equations of mass conservation, momentum conservation, and energy conservation are solved by using a central-moments-based Lattice Boltzmann scheme. The air pocket generated around heater raised incorporating magnetic effects. The heat transfer through this advancement has been explored quantitatively and abstractly. The results shows that with the development in the volumetric applied force at the bubble-fluid interface, the bubble boundary layer thickness around the square heater lessened which cause the Nusselt nu... Zhenfeng Zhou, Qiujie Yi, Ruihao Wang, Guang Wang, Chunyuan Ma
November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: burnout, Coal, oxygen temperature, raceway, TGR-OBF
The cooling effect of room-temperature oxygen in oxygen blast furnaces with top gas recycling (TGR-OBF) delays the coal combustion process. To further explore the oxygen−coal combustion mechanism and intensify coal combustion in TGR-OBF, the effect of oxygen temperature on coal combustion was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A three-dimensional model was developed to simulate the lance−blowpipe−tuyere−raceway of TGR-OBF. The effect of oxygen temperature at the same oxygen velocity and mass flow on coal combustion was investigated. Results showed the cooling effect of room-temperature oxygen was weakened, and the coal burnout was greatly increased with the increase in oxygen temperature. In particular, the coal burnout increased from 21.64% to 81.98% at the same oxygen velocity when the oxygen temperature increased from 300 to 500 K. The results provide useful reference for the development of TGR-OBF and coal combustion technology.

Biao Zhou, Ximing He, Hui Yang, Zuchao Zhu, Yikun Wei, Yan Zhang
November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: centrifugal fan, large eddy simulation, pressure fluctuation, surge, unsteady flow
The steady and unsteady flow characteristics of internal flow in a backward centrifugal fan of double inlet at low flow-rate condition are investigated by computational fluid dynamics in this paper. The investigation aims to reveal insights into generation mechanisms and our physical understanding of the rotating stall and surge. The numerical results mainly demonstrate that, with decreasing flow rate, a large number of vortex flows almost increasingly occupy the internal flow of the impeller. The reverse flow and separation vortices increasingly appear near the outlet of volute, and the internal flow of the impeller is completely blocked by the separated vortex flow at low flow-rate conditions. Results indicate that, due to a synchronization of the impeller rotation and separation vortex, these separated vortices act intensely on the pressure surface of the blade with time evolution, and the interaction between the separated vortices and surface of blade increasingly yields small-scal... November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: bioprinting, bioprinting material, commercial bioink, computational simulation, Fluid Dynamics, level-set, temperature
Bioinks are usually cell-laden hydrogels widely studied in bioprinting performing experimental tests to tune their rheological properties, thus increasing research time and development costs. Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) is a powerful tool that can minimize iterations and costs simulating the material behavior using parametric changes in rheological properties under testing. Additionally, most bioinks have specific functionalities and their properties might widely change with temperature. Therefore, commercial bioinks are an excellent way to standardize bioprinting process, but they are not analyzed in detail. Therefore, the objective of this work is to study how three temperatures of the Cellink Bioink influence shear stress pressure and velocity through computational simulation. A comparison of three conical nozzles (20, 22, and 25G) for each temperature has been performed. The results show that shear stress, pressure, and velocity vary in negligible ranges for all combination... [more]

November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, droplets distribution, exhaust gas cleaning, nozzles distribution, sodium-alkali method
According to regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the sulfur content of vessels must not exceed 0.5% outside the Emission Control Areas (ECAs) starting from 2020. The marine exhaust gas desulfurization (De-SOx) system is the most feasible technology to meet the increasing regulations, but there is always a large swirl at the bottom of the scrubber causing uneven flow past the sprays. Solving this problem by adjusting the spray is a feasible method. The exhaust gas at 485 K and injection liquid at 305 K are simulated to optimize the flow field in a De-SOx scrubber. The results indicated that the flue gas was easily concentrated in the left side area of the scrubber and this part of hot gas could escape from the scrubber. By controlling the nozzles distribution and the nozzles angle, it was possible to reduce the droplets to hit the wall and improve the utilization rate of the washing liquid. The nozzles were arranged up and down in different positions, which r... [more]

Yu Huang, Jian Ruan, Chenchen Zhang, Chuan Ding, Sheng Li
November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: 2D piston machine, experimental research, force analysis, mathematical model, mechanical losses
Since many studies on axial piston pumps aim at enhancing their high power-weight ratio, many researchers have focused on the generated mechanical losses by the three friction pairs in such pumps and attempted to diminish them through abundant and new structural designs of the pump’s components. In this paper, a high-speed 2D piston pump is introduced and its architecture is specifically described. Afterward, a mathematical model is established to study the pump’s mechanical efficiency, including the mechanical losses caused by the viscosity and stirring oil. Additionally, in this study the influences of the rotational speed, the different load pressures, and the rolling friction coefficient between the cone roller and the guiding rail are considered and discussed. By building a test rig, a series of experiments were carried out to prove that the mechanical efficiency was accurately predicted by this model at low load pressures. However, there was an increasing difference between the t... [more]

November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: badgir, indoor air quality, natural ventilation, passive cooling, windcatcher
Windcatchers are considered as promising passive ventilation and cooling strategy, but the ventilation performance of this system is still of concern in areas with low speed and unpredictable winds. The air short circuiting in windcatchers can reduce its ventilation performance and ability to introduce clean air and remove stale air. The current work aimed to evaluate the indoor environmental quality (IEQ) performance of a two-sided windcatcher fitted with an anti-short-circuit device (ASCD) for improving its performance in low wind speed conditions. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed for different ASCD configurations. The CFD method was verified using grid-sensitivity analysis and validated by comparing the simulation results with wind tunnel data. The results indicated that the average difference between CFD results and previous experimentation was below 10%, therefore indicating good agreement. Building on the findings of the previous research, the study f... [more]
Numerical Simulation of Water Based Ferrofluid Flows along Moving Surfaces
Gabriella Bognár, Krisztián Hriczó
November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: ferrofluid, fluid flow, non-uniform magnetic field, Nusselt number, Sakiadis flow, skin friction coefficient, stretching sheet
The steady two-dimensional boundary layer flow past a stretching flat sheet in a water-based ferrofluid is investigated. The spatially varying magnetic field is created by two line currents. The similarity method is applied to transform the governing equations into a system of coupled ordinary differential equations. Numerical investigations are performed for ferrofluids, the suspensions of water, and three types of ferroparticles (magnetite, cobalt ferrite, and Mn-Zn ferrite). The impact of the solid volume fraction, the surface stretching parameter, and the ferromagnetic coefficient on the dimensionless velocity and temperature profiles, the skin friction coefficient, and the local Nusselt number are analysed for the three types of ferrofluid.

November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, moving surface, nanofluid, Nusselt number, Sakiadis flow, similarity method, skin friction
Viscous nanofluid flow due to a sheet moving with constant speed in an otherwise quiescent medium is studied for three types of nanofluids, such as alumina (Al2O3), titania (TiO2), and magnetite (Fe3O4), in a base fluid of water. The heat and mass transfer characteristics are investigated theoretically using the boundary layer theory and numerically with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The velocity, temperature, skin friction coefficient, and local Nusselt number are determined. The obtained results are in good agreement with known results from the literature. It is found that the obtained results for skin friction and for the Nusselt number are slightly greater than those obtained via boundary layer theory.

Arne Teiwes, Maksym Dosta, Michael Jacob, Stefan Heinrich
November 9, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: gas pulsation, gas–solid processes, heat and mass transfer, particle dynamics, spray processes
Although the benefits of pulsating multiphase flows and the concomitant opportunity to intensify heat and mass transfer processes for, e.g., drying, extraction or chemical reactions have been known for some time, the industrial implementation is still limited. This is particularly due to the lack of understanding of basic influencing factors, such as amplitude and frequency of the pulsating flow and the resulting particle dynamics. The pulsation generates oscillation of velocity, pressure, and temperature, intensifying the heat and mass transfer by a factor of up to five compared to stationary gas flow. With the goal of process intensification and targeted control of sub-processes or even the development of completely new processing routes for the formation, drying or conversion of particulate solids in pulsating gas flows as utilized in, e.g., pulse combustion drying or pulse combustion spray pyrolysis, the basic understanding of occurring transport processes is becoming more and more... Keywords: DEVSS, Finite Volume Method, Log-Conformation Reformulation, OpenFOAM, Rolie-Poly Constitutive Model, Shear-banding
The flow of viscoelastic fluids may, under certain conditions, exhibit shear-banding characteristics that result from their susceptibility to unusual flow instabilities. In this work, we explore both the existing shear banding mechanisms in the literature, namely; constitutive instabilities and flow-induced inhomogeneities. Shear banding due to constitutive instabilities is modelled via either the Johnson−Segalman or the Giesekus constitutive models. Shear banding due to flow-induced inhomogeneities is modelled via the Rolie−Poly constitutive model. The Rolie−Poly constitutive equation is especially chosen because it expresses, precisely, the shear rheometry of polymer solutions for a large number of strain rates. For the Rolie−Poly approach, we use the two-fluid model wherein the stress dynamics are coupled with concentration equations. We follow a computational analysis approach via an efficient and versatile numerical algorithm. The numerical algorithm is based on the Finite Volume... [more]

Keywords: bubble, bubble plume, Computational Fluid Dynamics, gas–liquid flow, oscillation and offset characteristic
Based on low-cost and easy to enlarge, the bubble column device has been widely concerned in chemical industry. This paper focuses on bubble plumes in laboratory-scale three-dimensional rectangular air-water columns. Static behavior has been investigated in many experiments and simulations, and our present investigations consider the dynamic behavior of bubble plume offset in three dimensions. The investigations are conducted with a set of closure models by the Euler−Euler approach, and subsequently, literature data for rectangular bubble columns are analyzed for comparison purposes. Moreover, the transient evolution characteristics of the bubble plume in the bubble column and the gas phase distribution in sections are introduced, and the offset characteristics and the oscillation period of the plume are analyzed. In addition, the distributions of the vector diagram of velocity and vortex intensity in the domain are given. The effects of different fluxes and column aspect ratios on bub... [more]

October 26, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, equilibrium points, Hydrogen, mathematical model, methane, numerical simulation, stability analysis, two-phases process
We propose a new mathematical model describing a biotechnological process of simultaneous production of hydrogen and methane by anaerobic digestion. The process is carried out in two connected continuously stirred bioreactors. The proposed model is developed by adapting and reducing the well known Anaerobic Digester Model No 1 (ADM1). Mathematical analysis of the model is carried out, involving existence and uniqueness of positive and uniformly bounded solutions, computation of equilibrium points, investigation of their local stability with respect to practically important input parameters. Existence of maxima of the input−output static characteristics with respect to hydrogen and methane is established. Numerical simulations using a specially elaborated web-based software environment are presented to demonstrate the dynamic behavior of the model solutions.

Keywords: CFD-DEM coupling, dust suppression, experiment, spiral hopper
A new dust suppression hopper with a spiral guide plate embedded in the conventional hopper is proposed for the dust suppression of hopper transfer processes in this article. The Computational Fluid Dynamics-Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) coupling numerical method is used to investigate the particle motion and flow field distribution of the hopper transfer process. The experiment is undertaken to determine dust suppression performance. The results show that the maximum particle velocity for the spiral hopper is dropped by 1.6 m/s compared to the conventional hopper, which means the collision of the particles and the spiral hopper is weakened. The axial airflow velocity of the spiral is reduced. In addition, the maximum dust concentration of the spiral hopper inlet is reduced by 56.9% due to the impact velocity of particles is small, and the secondary fugitive dust is controlled inside a semi-closed space formed by the spiral guide plate. It is thus concluded that the spiral hopper p... [more]

October 26, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: delay differential equations, HIV, immune system, mathematical model
A mathematical model composed of two non-linear differential equations that describe the population dynamics of CD4 T-cells in the human immune system, as well as viral HIV viral load, is proposed. The invariance region is determined, classical equilibrium stability analysis is performed by using the basic reproduction number, and numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate stability results. Thereafter, the model is modified with a delay term, describing the time required for CD4 T-cell immunological activation. This generates a two-dimensional integro-differential system, which is transformed into a system with three ordinary differential equations. For the new model, equilibriums are determined, their local stability is examined, and results are studied by way of numerical simulation.

Keywords: extra-column dispersion, Fluid Dynamics, mechanistic modelling, peak broadening, preparative chromatography
Chromatography equipment includes hold-up volumes that are external to the packed bed and usually not considered in the development of chromatography models. These volumes can substantially contribute to band-broadening in the system and deteriorate the predicted performance. We selected a bubble trap of a pilot scale chromatography system as an example for a hold-up volume with a non-standard mixing behavior. In a worst-case scenario, the bubble trap is not properly flushed before elution, thus causing the significant band-broadening of the elution peak. We showed that the mixing of buffers with different densities in the bubble trap device can be accurately modeled using a simple compartment model. The model was calibrated at a wide range of flow rates and salt concentrations. The simulations were performed using the open-source software CADET, and all scripts and data are published with this manuscript. The results illustrate the importance of including external holdup volumes in ch... [more]

Keywords: Bingham fluid, drag and lift coefficients, LBB-stable finite element pair, yield stress
A CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis was carried out for the Bingham viscoplastic fluid flow simulations around cylinders of circular and square shapes. The governing equations in space were discretized with the finite element approach via a weak formulation and utilizing Ladyzhenskaya−Babuška−Brezzi-stable pair Q 2 / P 1 disc for approximation of the velocity and pressure profiles. The discrete non-linear system was linearized through Newton’s method, and a direct linear solver was iterated as an inner core solver. The study predicts the functional dependence and impact of Bingham number, B n , on the drag coefficient and lift coefficient. The effect of the shape of an obstacle is also provided by providing comparative data for the hydrodynamic forces with the published results.

Keywords: channel tapering, flow distribution, interdigitated flow field, lubrication theory, Modelling, pressure drop, redox flow battery
Optimization of flow fields in redox flow batteries can increase performance and efficiency, while reducing cost. Therefore, there is a need to establish a fundamental understanding on the connection between flow fields, electrolyte flow management and electrode properties. In this work, the flow distribution and pressure drop characteristics of interdigitated flow fields with constant and tapered cross-sections are examined numerically and experimentally. Two simplified 2D along-the-channel models are used: (1) a CFD model, which includes the channels and the porous electrode, with Darcy’s viscous resistance as a momentum sink term in the latter; and (2) a semi-analytical model, which uses Darcy’s law to describe the 2D flow in the electrode and lubrication theory to describe the 1D Poiseuille flow in the channels, with the 2D and 1D sub-models coupled at the channel/electrode interfaces. The predictions of the models are compared between them and with experimental data. The results s... [more]

October 26, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, finned tube, heat transfer
The heat transfer was experimentally and numerically studied in this article. Characteristics of circular fins over a bent tube at different tube orientations and air velocities were investigated, and then compared with analytical results from the literature. For the experimental investigation, a simple setup was compiled inside of a wind tunnel, where the velocity and the inlet temperature of the air; the volume flow rate; and the inlet and outlet temperatures of the water were measured. Three different orientations were investigated with the set-up: the bent tube in line with the air flow with the same and opposite water inlet positions, and the bent tube perpendicular to the air flow. According to the results, the position has a significant effect on the heat transfer coefficient. A numerical study was also performed in accordance with the measurements in ANSYS-CFX computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The results of the CFD showed an acceptable correlation with the results o... [more]

Keywords: blast furnace, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fuel injection, Natural Gas, numerical simulation, RAFT
During recent years, there has been great interest in exploring the potential for high-rate natural gas (NG) injection in North American blast furnaces (BFs) due to the fuel’s relatively low cost, operational advantages, and reduced carbon footprint. However, it is well documented that increasing NG injection rates results in declining raceway flame temperatures (a quenching effect on the furnace, so to speak), with the end result of a functional limit on the maximum injection rate that can be used while maintaining stable operation. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of the BF raceway and shaft regions developed by Purdue University Northwest’s (PNW) Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation (CIVS) have been applied to simulate multi-phase reacting flow in industry blast furnaces with the aim of exploring the use of pre-heated NG as a method of widening the BF operating window. Simulations predicted that pre-heated NG injection could increase the flow of sensib... [more]
A Detailed Mathematical Model for Evaluation of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Performance Degradation

Keywords: Degradation rate, Long-term performance, Optimal operation, SOFCs
The performance of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) degrades due to various reactions. Lack of a general model based on these reactions that predicts SOFCs long-time performance with few assumptions, limits commercialization of SOFCs. In this work, a detailed mathematical model is constructed to evaluate SOFCs long-term performance with regard to operating conditions. Most of the reactions that greatly deteriorates SOFCs components; such as Ni coarsening and oxidation, anode pore diameter changes, deterioration of anode conductivity and electrolyte conductivity, and sulfur poisoning are considered in this model to ensure that it yields reliable and precise results. A broad literature survey indicated that previously developed models only account for a part of these reactions and hence they do not provide accurate results. Rest of the models, on the other hand, are regression models that have been fitted to experimental data and thus are valid in a limited range of operating parameters.... [more]

The hybrid photovoltaic/thermal solar collector has attracted research attention for more than five decades. Its capability to produce thermal energy simultaneously with electrical energy is considered attractive since it provides higher total efficiency than stand-alone photovoltaic or thermal systems separately. This paper describes theoretical and experimental studies of a finned single pass air-type photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) solar collector. The performance of the system is calculated based on one dimensional (1D) steady-state analysis using one dimensional energy balance equations, where simulation was carried out using MATLAB. Experiments were carried out to observe the performance of the solar collector under changes in air mass flow rate. Experimental values on photovoltaic panel temperature and air temperature on both air inlet and outlet, together with the ambient temperature and solar radiation were measured. The simulation results were validated against the results obtain... [more]

Keywords: bubble burst, gas-liquid-solid three-phase particle flow, micro-jet, PLIC-VOF, wall effect
The bubble bursting process existing in the particle flow is a complex gas-liquid-solid three-phase coupling dynamic problem. The bubble bursting mechanism, including dynamic characteristics and wall effects, is not clear. To address the above matters, we present a modeling method for the piecewise linear interface calculation-volume of fluid (PLIC-VOF) based bubble burst. The bubble bursting process near or on the wall is analyzed to reveal the dynamic characteristics of bubble bursting and obtain the effect of a bubble bursting on the surrounding flow field. Then a particle image velocimetry (PIV) based self-developed experimental observation platform is established, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified. Research results indicate that, in the high-speed turbulent environment, a large pressure difference existed in the bubble tail, which induces the bubble burst to occur; the distance between the wall and the bubble decreases; the higher the flow velocity is, the l... The basic principles of geological risk calculation through probability of success (PoS) are mostly applied to numerical estimation of additional hydrocarbon existence in proven reservoirs or potential hydrocarbon discoveries in selected geological regional subsurface volumes. It can be adapted and validated for a comprehensive input dataset collected in the selected petroleum province, by dividing up geological events into several probability categories and classes. Such methodology has been widely developed in the last decades in the Croatian subsurface—mostly in the Croatian Pannonian Basin System (CPBS). Through the adaptation of geological categories, it was also applied in hybrid, i.e., stochastic, models developed in the CPBS (Drava Depression), mostly for inclusion of porosity values. As the robustness of this methodology is very high, it was also modified to estimate the influence of water-flooding in increasing oil recovery in some proven Neogene sandstone reservoirs in the C...
