Macroscopic Behavior and Microscopic Structure Evolution of Marine Clay in One-Dimensional Compression Revealed by Discrete Element Simulation
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: clay platelet, discrete element method, double layer repulsive interaction, fabric, marine clay, van der Waals attractive interaction
Marine clay has been attracting in-depth research on its mechanical behavior and internal structure evolution, which are crucial to marine infrastructure safety. In the formation process of marine clay, including the sedimentation and consolidation stages, the compression behavior and internal structure evolution are highly dependent on the pore water salinity. Discrete element method (DEM) simulation is a powerful tool to study the microscopic mechanics behind the complicated macroscopic mechanical behavior of marine clay. In this study, a DEM simulation scheme is systematically proposed to numerically study the macroscopic beahvior and microscopic structure evolution of marine clay in one-dimensional compression that mimics the marine clay formation process. First, the proposed calculation scheme for double layer repulsive interaction and van der Waals interaction is introduced. Then, the developed DEM simulation scheme is validated by satisfactorily reproducing the experimentally ob... [more]

Optimisation of a Side Inlet for H2 Entry into an Ultrasonic Spray Pyrolysis Device
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ANSYS CFX, computer fluid dynamics, fluid flow simulation, gas mixing, Hydrogen, N2, USP device
An ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) device consists of an evaporation and two reaction zones of equal length, into which an aerosol with a precursor compound enters, and where nanoparticles are formed in the final stage. As part of this research, we simulated the geometry of a side inlet, where the reaction gas (H2) enters into the reaction tube of the device by using numerical methods. Mixing with the carrier gas (N2) occurs at the entry of the H2. In the initial part, we performed a theoretical calculation with a numerical simulation using ANSYS CFX, while the geometries of the basic and studied models were prepared with Solidworks. The inlet geometry of the H2 included a study of the position and radius of the inlet with respect to the reaction tube of the USP device, as well as a study of the angle and diameter of the inlet. In the simulation, we chose the typical flows of both gases (N2, H2) in the range of 5 L/min to 15 L/min. The results show that the best geometry is with the H... [more]

Turbulence Enhancement and Mixing Analysis for Multi-Inlet Vortex Photoreactor for CO2 Reduction
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Genetic Algorithm, molar rate control, multi-inlet vortex reactor, residence time distribution
In this article, we describe a prototype photoreactor of which the geometrical configuration was obtained by Genetic Algorithms to maximize the residence time of the reactant gases. A gas reaction mixture of CO2:H2O (1:2 molar ratio) was studied from the fluid dynamic point of view. The two main features of this prototype reactor are the conical shape, which enhances the residence time as compared to a cylindrical shape reference reactor, and the inlet heights and position around the main chamber that enables turbulence and mass transfer control. Turbulence intensity, mixing capability, and residence time attributes for the optimized prototype reactor were calculated with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and compared with those from a reference reactor. Turbulence intensity near the envisioned catalytic bed was one percentage point higher in the reference than in the optimized prototype reactor. Finally, the homogeneity of the mixture was guaranteed since both types of react... [more]

Analysis of the Dispersion of Viscoelastic Clusters in the Industrial Rotor-Stator Equipment
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, rheology, rotor-stator mixer, shear modulus, viscoelasticity
Materials with complex rheology and viscoelasticity may require special equipment for processing, such as for dispergation. Rheological and mechanical data of the material can help with finding the required equipment or designing equipment. For highly viscous and complex material, a rotor-stator mixer can be a good choice for dispergation. Due to the laminar or creeping mechanism of flow inside the equipment, the dispergation mechanism is assumed to be a combination of the shear stress and slicing of the material by the rotor and stator blades. For the validation of the theory, the mechanical properties of the viscose identified in a previous work were used for comparison with the data from the CFD simulation of the rotor-stator mixer. The comparison showed that the rotor-stator device can overcome the complex shear modulus and ultimate strength of the material and homogenize the solution through a combination of the shear stress and slicing. The theory was also confirmed on the proces... [more]

Moving Multiscale Modelling to the Edge: Benchmarking and Load Optimization for Cellular Automata on Low Power Microcomputers
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Cellular Automata, distributed computing, edge computing, NVidia Jetson, RaspberryPi
Numerical computations are usually associated with the High Performance Computing. Nevertheless, both industry and science tend to involve devices with lower power in computations. This is especially true when the data collecting devices are able to partially process them at place, thus increasing the system reliability. This paradigm is known as Edge Computing. In this paper, we propose the use of devices at the edge, with lower computing power, for multi-scale modelling calculations. A system was created, consisting of a high-power device—a two-processor workstation, 8 RaspberryPi 4B microcomputers and 8 NVidia Jetson Nano units, equipped with GPU processor. As a part of this research, benchmarking was performed, on the basis of which the computational capabilities of the devices were classified. Two parameters were considered: the number and performance of computing units (CPUs and GPUs) and the energy consumption of the loaded machines. Then, using the calculated weak scalability a... February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twins, direct-drive, Industry 4.0, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind energy, wind turbines
The Industry 4.0 concept of a Digital Twin will bring many advantages for wind energy conversion systems, e.g., in condition monitoring, predictive maintenance and the optimisation of control or design parameters. A virtual replica is at the heart of a digital twin. To construct a virtual replica, appropriate modelling techniques must be selected for the turbine components. These models must be chosen with the intended use case of the digital twin in mind, finding a proper balance between the model fidelity and computational load. This review article presents an overview of the recent literature on modelling techniques for turbine aerodynamics, structure and drivetrain mechanics, the permanent magnet synchronous generator, the power electronic converter and the pitch and yaw systems. For each component, a balanced overview is given of models with varying model fidelity and computational load, ranging from simplified lumped parameter models to advanced numerical Finite Element Method (F... Oscillating Combustion—Primary Measure to Reduce Nitrogen Oxide in a Grate Furnace−Experiments and Simulations
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD-simulation, combustion, grate furnace, oscillation, reduction of NOx
The emission from industries and the mobility sector is under strong legal regulations in many countries worldwide. In Germany, the amendment to the 17th BlmSchV (Federal pollution control ordinance), which has been in force for waste incineration plants since 2013, has given rise to a new limit for nitrogen oxides of 150 mg/m3 as the daily mean level from 2019 on. A similar focus is on biomass-fired plants. According to the MCP (medium combustion plant) guideline of the EU, as a consequence, existing plants are required to either increase their consumption of ammonia water for nitrogen oxide reduction (SNCR process) or back fit SCR catalysts as secondary measures, which is a costly procedure. This paper presents a novel two-stage process in which an oscillating supply of secondary air allows nitrogen oxides to be reduced by approx. 50% at a good burnout level, which may obviate the need for secondary measures. Besides experimental investigations in a fixed bed reactor, CFD simulations... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), hydrogen pre-cooling system, hydrogen refueling station, shell and tube heat exchanger
In the fast filling process, in order to control the temperature of the vehicle-mounted storage tank not to exceed the upper limit of 85 °C, it is an effective method to add a hydrogen pre-cooling system upstream of the hydrogenation machine. In this paper, Fluent is used to simulate the heat transfer process of high-pressure hydrogen in a shell-and-tube heat exchanger and the phase change process of refrigerant R23. The accuracy of the model is proven by a comparison with the data in the references. Using this model, the temperature field and gas volume fraction in the heat transfer process are obtained, which is helpful to analyze the heat transfer mechanism. At the same time, the influence of hydrogen inlet temperature, hydrogen inlet pressure, and refrigerant flow rate on the refrigeration performance was studied. The current work shows that the model can be used to determine the best working parameters in the pre-cooling process and reduce the operating cost of the hydrogen refuel... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Absorption, Carbon Dioxide Capture, N-(2-Hydroxyethyl) piperazine, reboiler heat duty, regeneration energy
-(2-Hydroxyethyl) piperazine (HEPZ) has a chemical structure similar to PZ and has less volatility. It is not easy to volatilize in a continuous operation device. It is studied to replace PZ as a promotor to increase the CO2 capture rate. This paper researches the lowest energy consumption and absorbent loss of HEPZ/H2O in the absorption-regeneration process, and compares it with another five amines, including PZ, MEA, 1-MPZ, AMP and DMEA. Based on the thermodynamic model, this work establishes a process simulation based on the equilibrium stage, assuming that all stages of the absorption and desorption towers reach thermodynamic equilibrium and CO2 recovery in the absorption tower is 90%. By optimizing the process parameters, the lowest thermodynamic energy consumption and absorbent loss of process operation are obtained. Our results show that HEPZ as a promotor to replace PZ and MEA has significant economic value. The lowest reboiler energy consumption of HEPZ with the optimal proces... [more]

Modeling Transient Flow in CO2 Injection Wells by Considering the Phase Change
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CO2 flow, CO2 fracturing, phase transition, supercritical CO2, wellbore temperature
A transient model to simulate the temperature and pressure in CO2 injection wells is proposed and solved using the finite difference method. The model couples the variability of CO2 properties and conservation laws. The maximum error between the simulated and measured results is 5.04%. The case study shows that the phase state is primarily controlled by the wellbore temperature. Increasing the injection temperature or decreasing the injection rate contributes to obtaining the supercritical state. The variability of density can be ignored when the injection rate is low, but for a high injection rate, ignoring this may cause considerable errors in pressure profiles.

Numerical Simulation of Dyeing Process of Cotton with Natural Dye
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Adsorption, Darcy’s law, diffusion, mass transport, multiscale model, reactive dye
Cotton dyeing is a very complex process with many variables in which different phenomena occur simultaneously. This study aimed to describe the cotton dyeing process by natural dye, using a mathematical model that consists of three mass conservation equations that depict dyeing cotton in cones, taking a representative volume element at the micro, meso, and macroscales. The first equation describes the concentration changes of the dye in the solution, taking into account the diffusive, convective, adsorptive, and reactive effects. The second equation describes the changes in dye concentration in cotton fiber, considering the diffusive, adsorptive, and reactive effects within an intermediate scale. The last equation describes changes in the concentration of dye in the solution on the macroscale, based on the characteristics of the equipment and the difference in concentration before and after passing through the fiber. In addition, a fluid continuity equation was incorporated, taking int... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Altair® AcuSolve™, Computational Fluid Dynamics, multi-phase flow, slug flow
Selection of inlet perturbations, multiphase equations, and the turbulence equation may affect the development of slug flow using computational fluid dynamic simulation tools. The inlet perturbation, such as sinusoidal and random perturbations, play an essential role in inducing slug formation. Multiphase equations such as volume of fluid and level set methods are used to track and capture the gas-liquid immiscible interface. Similarly, turbulence equations such as Spalart Allmaras (SA), Detached Eddy Simulations (DES), k-omega, and k-epsilon can be used to predict the evolution of turbulence within the flow. At present, no direct comparison is available in the literature on the selection of (i) types of inlet perturbations, (ii) the choice of multiphase equations, and (iii) the turbulence equation on the development of slug flow using the Altair computational package. This article aims to compare the effects of the selection of inlet perturbations, multiphase models and turbulence equ... [more]

Applicability of Constitutive Models to Describing the Compressibility of Mining Backfill: A Comparative Study
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compressibility, constitutive models, mining backfill, numerical modeling
The compressibility of mining backfill governs its resistance to the closure of surrounding rock mass, which should be well reflected in numerical modeling. In most numerical simulations of backfill, the Mohr−Coulomb elasto-plastic model is used, but is constantly criticized for its poor representativeness to the mechanical response of geomaterials. Finding an appropriate constitutive model to better represent the compressibility of mining backfill is critical and necessary. In this paper, Mohr−Coulomb elasto-plastic model, double-yield model, and Soft Soil model are briefly recalled. Their applicability to describing the backfill compressibility is then assessed by comparing numerical and experimental results of one-dimensional consolidation and consolidated drained triaxial compression tests made on lowly cemented backfills available in the literature. The comparisons show that the Soft Soil model can be used to properly describe the experimental results while the application of the... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cells, finite element method, Modelling
Power supply systems based on air-cooled proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stacks are becoming more popular as power sources for mobile applications. We try to create a PEMFC model that allows for predicting the PEMFC operation in various climatic conditions. A total of two models were developed and used: the membrane electrode assemble (MEA) model and the PEMFC stack model. The developed MEA model allows to determine the influence of external factors (temperature) on the PEMFC power density. The data obtained using the developed model correlate with experimental data at low ambient temperatures (10−30 °C). The difference between the simulation and experimental data is less than 10%. However, the accuracy of the model during PEMFC operation at high (>30 °C) and negative ambient temperatures remains in doubt and requires improvement. The obtained data were integrated into the air-cooled PEMFC stack model. Data of the temperature fields distribution will help to manage the proce... [more]

Numerical Study of Effect of Sawtooth Riblets on Low-Reynolds-Number Airfoil Flow Characteristic and Aerodynamic Performance
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: airfoil, Computational Fluid Dynamics, drag reduction, riblets
Riblets with an appropriate size can effectively restrain turbulent boundary layer thickness and reduce viscous drag, but the effects of riblets strongly depend on the appearance of the fabric that is to be applied and its operating conditions. In this study, in order to improve the aerodynamic performance of a low-pressure fan by using riblet technology, sawtooth riblets on NACA4412 airfoil are examined at the low Reynolds number of 1 × 105, and the airfoil is operated at angles of attack (AOAs) ranging from approximately 0° to 12°. The numerical simulation is carried out by employing the SST k−ω turbulence model through the Ansys Fluent, and the effects of the riblets’ length and height on aerodynamic performance and flow characteristics of the airfoil are investigated. The results indicate that the amount of drag reduction varies greatly with riblet length and height and the AOA of airfoil flow. By contrast, the riblets are detrimental to the airfoil in some cases. Roof Cutting Parameters Design for Gob-Side Entry in Deep Coal Mine: A Case Study
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: gob-side entry, mechanical model, numerical simulation, parameters determination, roof cutting
Roof cutting is an effective technique for controlling the deformation and failure of the surrounding rock in deep gob-side entry. The determination of the roof cutting parameters has become a popular research subject. Initially, two mechanical models are established for the non-roof-cutting and roof-cutting of gob-side entry in deep mining conditions. On this basis, the necessity and significance of roof cutting is revealed by analysing the stress and displacement of roadside prop. The Universal Distinct Element Code numerical simulation model is established to determine the key roof-cutting parameters (cutting angle and cutting height) according to the on-site situation of No. 2415 headentry of the Suncun coal mine, China. The numerical simulation results show that with the cutting angle and height increase, the vertical stress and horizontal displacement of the coal wall first increase and then decrease, as in the case of the vertical stress and displacement of roadside prop. February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: east Inner Mongolia power system, large-scale wind power integration, probabilistic load flow, vine-copula, voltage state assessment
With the increasing rate of wind power installed capacity, voltage state assessment with large-scale wind power integration is of great significance. In this paper, a vine-copula based voltage state assessment method with large-scale wind power integration is proposed. Firstly, the nonparametric kernel density estimation is used to fit the wind speed distribution, and vine-copula is used to construct the wind speed joint distribution model of multiple regions. February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal pump, internal energy dissipation, rotating stall, vortex flow
Dredge pumps are usually operated at part-load conditions, in which the low-solidity centrifugal impeller could experience large internal energy dissipation, related to flow separation and vortices. In this study, SST k-ω and SAS-SST turbulence models were used, in steady and unsteady simulations, for a low-head centrifugal pump with a three-bladed impeller. The main focus of the present work was to investigate the internal energy dissipation in rotating an impeller at part-load operating conditions, related to flow separation and stall. The unsteady nature of these operating conditions was investigated. Performance experiments and transient wall pressure measurements were conducted for validation. A methodology for internal energy dissipation analysis has been proposed; and the unsteady pressure fluctuations were analyzed in the rotating impeller. The internal power losses in the volute and the impeller were mostly found in the centrifugal pump. The rotating stall phenomenon occurred... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: complex terrain, design of experiments (DoE), unmanned aircraft system (UAS), unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS), wind simulation
This investigation presents a modelling strategy for wind-energy studies in complex terrains using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A model, based on an unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach with a modified version of the standard k-ε model, is applied. A validation study based on the Leipzig experiment shows the ability of the model to simulate atmospheric boundary layer characteristics such as the Coriolis force and shallow boundary layer. By combining the results of the model and a design of experiments (DoE) method, we could determine the degree to which the slope, the leaf area index, and the forest height of an escarpment have an effect on the horizontal velocity, the flow inclination angle, and the turbulent kinetic energy at critical positions. The DoE study shows that the primary contributor at a turbine-relevant height is the slope of the escarpment. In the second step, the method is extended to the WINSENT test site. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD simulations, small-size wind turbines, wind tunnel blockage, wind tunnel tests
Blockage corrections for the experimental results obtained for a small-scale wind turbine in a wind tunnel are required in order to estimate how the same turbine would perform in real conditions. The tunnel blockage is defined as the ratio of the wind turbine swept area to the wind tunnel cross-section area. Experimental measurements of the power coefficient were performed on a horizontal-axis wind turbine with two rotors of diameter equal to 2 m and different numbers of blades, namely three and five. Measurements were carried out for different tip speed ratios in the closed circuit open test section wind tunnel of the University of Perugia (Italy). The obtained experimental results were compared with the numerical ones carried out in free conditions by using a CFD approach based on the steady-RANS method with the SST k-ω turbulence model, adopting the multiple reference frame (MRF) strategy to reduce the computational effort. Local Energy Storage and Stochastic Modeling for Ultrafast Charging Stations
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electric vehicle (EV), Energy Storage, fast charging station, stochastic charging demand
Multi-stall fast charging stations are often thought to require megawatt-range grid connections. The power consumption profile of such stations results in high cost penalties due to monthly power peaks and expensive linkage fees. A local energy storage system (ESS) can be used to address peak power demands. However, no appropriate sizing method is available to match specific constraints, such as the contracted power available from the grid and the projected recharging demand. A stochastic distribution of charging events was used in this paper to model power demand profiles at the station, with a one minute resolution. Based on 100 simulated months, we propose an optimum number of charging points, and we developed an algorithm to return the required local ESS capacity as a function of the available grid connection. The role of ESSs in the range of 100 kWh to 1 MWh was studied for all stations with up to 2000 charging events per week. The relevance of ESS implementation was assessed alon... [more]
