A SAR Micromixer for Water-Water Mixing: Design, Optimization, and Analysis
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, microfluidic, micromixer, mixing effectiveness, pressure drop, SAR
A numerical investigation of the mixing performance and fluid flow in a new split and recombine (SAR) Y−U micromixer is presented in this work. A parameter called connecting angle βis varied from 0° to 90° to analyze the effect on the SAR process and mixing performance. Thenumerical data shows that the SAR process strongly depends on the connecting angle (β) and maximum efficiency (93%) can be achieved when the value of β is 45°. The Y−U45° the mixer also offers higher efficiency and lower pressure drop than a known SAR ‘H−C’ mixer irrespective of Reynolds numbers. The split and recombine process, the influence of secondary flow, and pressure drop characteristics at various Reynolds numbers are also studied. In addition, mixing effectiveness is also computed, and among all examined mixers, Y−U45° is by far the best performing one.

Comprehensive Optimization of the Dispersion of Mixing Particles in an Inert-Particle Spouted-Bed Reactor (IPSBR) System
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD-DPM simulation, gas–liquid reactor, hydrodynamics, inert mixing particles, particle dispersion, response surface methodology
Effective gas dispersion and liquid mixing are significant parameters in the design of an inert-particle spouted-bed reactor (IPSBR) system. Solid particles can be used to ensure good mixing and an efficient rate of mass and heat transfer between the gas and liquid. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) coupled with the discrete phase model (DPM) were developed to investigate the effect of the feed gas velocity (0.5−1.5 m/s), orifice diameter (0.001−0.005 m), gas head (0.15−0.35 m), particle diameter (0.009−0.0225 m), and mixing-particle-to-reactor-volume fraction (2.0−10.0 vol.%) on the solid mass concentration, average solid velocity, and average solid volume fraction in the upper, middle, and conical regions of the reactor. Statistical analysis was performed using a second-order response surface methodology (RSM) with central composite design (CCD) to obtain the optimal operating conditions. Selected parameters were optimized to maximize the responses in the middle and u... [more]

Modeling the Effects of Seasonal Weathering on Centrifuged Oil Sands Tailings
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dewatering, evaporation, fluid fine tailings, freeze–thaw, Modelling, seasonal weathering
The oil sands industry employs different technologies at pilot and commercial demonstration scales in order to improve the dewatering rate of fluid fine tailings. Of these technologies, centrifugation has advanced to the commercial scale and is playing a major role in the fluid fine tailings management strategy. However, centrifuge technology on its own may not develop the required strength to ensure fine tailings can be incorporated into dry landform reclamation, which requires water contents close to their plastic limit. Hence, it is paramount to combine more than one technology to maximize post-depositional dewatering. Management of the tailings deposit to promote seasonal weathering (freeze−thaw, evaporation and self-weight consolidation) can promote further dewatering. Properly assessing the contributions of the seasonal weathering components is vital to optimizing this strategy. Using the geotechnical properties of centrifuged tailings, the effects of seasonal weathering on taili... [more]

The Role of Stochastic Time-Variations in Turbulent Stresses When Predicting Drop Breakup—A Review of Modelling Approaches
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: emulsification, emulsion, high-pressure homogenizer, high-shear mixer, intermittency, rotor-stator mixer, turbulence, turbulent drop breakup
Many industrially relevant emulsification devices are of the high-energy type, where drop deformation and subsequent breakup, take place due to intense turbulent fluid−drop interactions. This includes high-pressure homogenizers as well as rotor-stator mixers (also known as high-shear mixers) of various designs. The stress acting on a drop in a turbulent flow field varies over time, occasionally reaching values far exceeding its time-averaged value, but only during limited stretches of time, after which it decreases down to low values again. This it is one factor separating turbulent from laminar emulsification. This contribution reviews attempts to take this intermittently time-varying stress into account in models predicting the characteristic drop diameter resulting from emulsification experiments, focusing on industrially applicable emulsification devices. Two main frameworks are discussed: the Kolmogorov−Hinze framework and the oscillatory resonance framework. Modelling suggestions... [more]

A Suitable Shape of the Suction Head for a Cleaning Process in a Factory Developed by Computational Fluid Dynamics
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: airflow, cleaning process, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), discrete phase, Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings, large eddy simulation, shear stress transport k-ω, sound noise, suction head
The previous shape of the suction head (SH) employed in a cleaning process in a factory had a low performance, removed fewer particles, and generated an annoying noise. Therefore, new shapes of SH have been proposed to solve the issues and the cleaning performance was investigated by the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-ω turbulence, Discrete Phase (DP), Large Eddy Simulation (LES), and Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings (FW−H) models in a transient state of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The SST k-ω and DP models were applied to determine the airflow, suspension velocity, cleaning region, and particle trace. In addition, the LES and FW−H models were used to evaluate the noise, sound pressure level, and frequency generated from the proposed shapes. All simulation results were validated with the air velocity and noise measurements and were analyzed to find a suitable shape. The simulation and experimental results revealed that the shapes of the SH affected the cleaning performance and nois... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air drying, fruit, impingement, Modelling, Optimization, rehydration, texture
This study deals with the improvement in drying process performances and the quality of the final product for industrial equipment in the food industry. Designers need to optimize the design parameters of devices to create synergies between the greater energy efficiency of the process and high-quality dried products. Air impingement drying was carried out on apple cylinders at 323 K and with air velocities ranging between 30 and 60 m s−1. The studied drying process presents a particular setup of jets as they are multiple rectangular slot jets issued from triangular nozzles. The effect of four design jet parameters (slot width, nozzle-to-surface height, nozzle-to-nozzle spacing, and airflow) on the drying process performances and the quality of the final product was analyzed and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). A minimal influence of design jet parameters on the process performances was shown, while an important impact was observed on the quality of dried apple. The s... [more]

Hydraulic Characteristics, Residence Time Distribution, and Flow Field of Electrochemical Descaling Reactor Using CFD
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, electrochemical descaling, flow field analysis, hydraulic characteristics, reactor, residence time distribution
This paper uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate flow field distribution inside an electrochemical descaling reactor in three dimensions. First, the reactor flow field was obtained by steady-state simulation, and the grid independence was verified. Then, the steady state of the flow field was judged to ensure the accuracy of the simulation results. Transient simulations were performed on the basis of steady-state simulations, and residence time distribution (RTD) curves were obtained by a pulse-tracing method. The effects of plate height and plate spacing on reactor hydraulic characteristics (flow state and backmixing) were investigated using RTD curves, and the results showed that increasing the plate height and decreasing the plate spacing could make the flow more similar to the plug flow and reduce the degree of backmixing in the reactor. The flow field details provided by CFD were used to analyze the reactor flow field and were further verified to obtain the distribut... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CLAHE, deep learning, industrial control, plastic injection molding, process automation, surface inspection, YOLO
Manufacturers are eager to replace the human inspector with automatic inspection systems to improve the competitive advantage by means of quality. However, some manufacturers have failed to apply the traditional vision system because of constraints in data acquisition and feature extraction. In this paper, we propose an inspection system based on deep learning for a tampon applicator producer that uses the applicator’s structural characteristics for data acquisition and uses state-of-the-art models for object detection and instance segmentation, YOLOv4 and YOLACT for feature extraction, respectively. During the on-site trial test, we experienced some False-Positive (FP) cases and found a possible Type I error. We used a data-centric approach to solve the problem by using two different data pre-processing methods, the Background Removal (BR) and Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE). We have experimented with analyzing the effect of the methods on the inspection with... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: chemical enhanced oil recovery, computational fluid dynamic simulations, microfluidics, surfactant flooding
A selection flowchart that assists, through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, the design of microfluidic experiments used to distinguish the performance in Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery (CEOR) of two surfactants with very similar values of interfacial tension (IFT) was proposed and its use demonstrated. The selection flowchart first proposes an experimental design for certain modified variables (X→: porosity, grain shape, the presence of preferential flowing channels, and injection velocity). Experiments are then performed through CFD simulations to obtain a set of response variables (Y→: recovery factor, breakthrough time, the fractal dimension of flow pattern, pressure drop, and entrapment effect). A sensitivity analysis of Y→ regarding the differences in the interfacial tension (IFT) can indicate the CFD experiments that could have more success when distinguishing between two surfactants with similar IFTs (0.037 mN/m and 0.045 mN/m). Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Adsorption, adsorption heat storage system, Modelling, residential heat supply, zeolite 13X
An open system based on physical adsorption phenomena with humid air and zeolite 13X is herein discussed for residential heat storage purposes. A model has been developed to describe the conservation of mass and heat in the system. A simplified approach of a complete model describing both mass conservation in the macroporous and microporous domains is used based on the linear driving force (LDF) model. Local mass and heat transfer properties have been used. To describe the equilibrium, the Aranovich−Donohue isotherm model is selected. As an example, the developed model is compared and fitted to experimental data from a pilot scale system. A parametric study on operating and design parameters is given to understand their effect on the amount and/or duration of heat supply, concentration, and temperature profiles. Effective Method for Evaluating Airflow Rate of Oscillating-Water-Column Pilot Plants
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: airflow rate, Computational Fluid Dynamics, oscillating water column, wave energy converter
In this study, a method for effectively estimating the airflow rate of the turbine of an oscillating water column (OWC) pilot plant was developed. The validity of the proposed method was verified through computational fluid dynamics simulations. The method was applied to estimate the airflow rate in irregular wave states based on the operation data obtained for the Yongsoo OWC pilot plant installed in the western seas of Jeju Island, South Korea. As an alternative to estimating the airflow rate of the OWC pilot plant, the impulse turbine performance chart-based interpolation method is introduced, and it is shown that the airflow rate time series calculated using the two methods were in good agreement.

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twin, manufacturing, mRNA, pDNA, process analytical technology, SARS-COVID-19, vaccines
SARS-COVID-19 vaccine supply for the total worldwide population has a bottleneck in manufacturing capacity. In this work, three manufacturing concepts for mRNA-based vaccines are evaluated: Batch, full-continuous and semi-continuous. Technical transfer from batch single-use to semi-continuous stainless-steel, i.e., plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid (pDNA) in batch and mRNA in continuous operation mode, is recommended, in order to gain: faster plant commissioning and start-up times of about 8−12 months and a rise in dose... Application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulation for the Effective Design of Food 3D Printing (A Review)
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: additive layer manufacturing (ALM) model, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), die swell, extrusion process, food 3D printing, residual stress, viscoelastic flow simulation
The progress of food 3D printing (3DP) applications demands a full understanding of the printing behavior of food materials. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation can help determine the optimum processing conditions for food 3DP such as layer height, deposit thickness, volume flow rate, and nozzle shape and diameter under varied material properties. This paper mainly discusses the application of CFD simulation for three core processes associated with 3DP: (1) flow fields in the nozzle during the extrusion process; (2) die swelling of materials at the die (the exit part of the nozzle); and (3) the residual stress of printed products. The major achievements of CFD simulation in food 3DP with varied food materials are discussed in detail. In addition, the problems and potential solutions that modelers encountered when utilizing CFD in food 3DP were explored.

Mini-Refinery Vacuum Unit: Functional Analysis and Improvement of Vacuum Overhead System
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: liquid ring vacuum pump, mini-refinery, rectification, steam ejection pumps, Unisim Design R451, universal modeling program, vacuum distillation unit, vacuum overhead
The purpose of this study was to analyze the functioning of the vacuum distillation unit of a mini-refinery and to develop recommendations for improving the vacuum overhead system with the aim to reduce the cost of creating and maintaining a vacuum in the fuel oil separation column. A calculation model of the vacuum unit was developed in the Unisim Design R451 software package, which was identified by comparing the calculated data with the data from an industrial study for two operating modes of the installation. Replacing the existing steam-ejector pump with a liquid-ring vacuum pump was proposed. A numerical experiment was carried out on the developed model, the purpose of which was to determine the “bottlenecks” of the scheme. The peculiarity of the experiment was that the vacuum column and the vacuum overhead system were considered as a single whole. As a result, it was determined that the “bottleneck” is the condenser, which was proposed to be replaced. During the technical and ec... [more]

Pairing Experimental and Mathematical Modeling Studies on Fluidized Beds for Enhancement of Models Predictive Quality: A Current Status Overview
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: advanced measurement techniques, CFD techniques, fluidized bed, mathematical modeling, modulus of elasticity
Modeling of gas-solid fluidized systems has been a prevailing challenge over the last few decades. With different approaches and implementing different sub-models to capture the essential multiphase and multiscale phenomena in these systems, major advances have been achieved, even though most models are only subject to a practical validation of macroscopic parameters. The current description of fluidized beds through mathematical models relies on the inclusion of vast sub-models, leading to an unquantifiable degree of uncertainty on the models’ applicability for extrapolation studies. Furthermore, each closure and fitting parameter in the model represents a possible source of deviation, and their optimization, hence, becomes another major challenge. The recent advances in measurement techniques can enable us to troubleshoot and optimize the implemented models and sub-models based on local scale measurements. Local multiphase hydrodynamic information obtained by advanced measurement tec... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: axial hydrocyclone separator, guide vane, separation, Simulation
An innovative axial hydrocyclone separator was designed in which a guide vane was installed to replace a conventional tangential inlet, potentially aggravating inlet turbulence. The characteristics of velocity distribution, concentration distribution, and pressure distribution inside the separator were obtained through the numerical simulation of the turbulent flow of oil and water. The results showed that the flow field presented good symmetry, which eliminated the eccentric turbulence phenomenon in the conventional hydrocyclone separators and was beneficial for the oil−water separation.

CFD Modeling of Flame Jump across Air Gap between Evasé and Capture Duct for Ventilation Air Methane Abatement
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: evasé, flame jump, regenerative thermal oxidizer, secondary explosion, underground mines, ventilation air–methane
The ventilation air−methane (VAM) released from underground mines is often transported into regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO) devices and burnt into heat energy. This study numerically investigates the scenarios where explosion occurs inside the RTO and the flame and pressure waves propagate back quickly towards the VAM discharge duct. Possibilities of secondary explosion in the discharge duct, hence in the downstream underground mines, are examined. The results critically showed that when the methane concentration accumulated in the RTO reached 7.5% or above, the flame generated from the explosion jumped to the evasé of the discharge section (over a distance of 29.4 m) and could induce explosions in underground mines.

Infection Units: A Novel Approach for Modeling COVID-19 Spread
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: mechanistic models, pandemic spread, symptomatic and asymptomatic COVID-19
A novel mechanistic model of COVID-19 spread is presented. The pool of infected individuals is not homogeneously mixed but is viewed as a passage into which individuals enter upon the contagion, through which they pass (in the manner of “plug flow”) and exit at their recovery points within a fixed time. Our novel concept of infection unit is defined. The model separately considers various population pools: two of symptomatic and asymptomatic infected patients; three different pools of recovered individuals; of assisted hospitalized patients; of the quarantined; and of those who die from COVID-19. Transmission of this disease is described by an infection rate function, modulated by an encounter frequency function. This definition makes redundant the addition of a separate pool for the exposed, as done in several other models. Simulations are presented. The effects of social restrictions and of quarantine policies on pandemic spread are demonstrated. The model differs conceptually from o... [more]

Keywords: dynamic stiffness, machine tool, modal characteristics, position correlation, sensitive components
Dynamic parameters are the intermediate information of the entirety of machine dynamics. The differences between components have not been combined with the structural vibration in the cutting process, so it is difficult to directly represent the dynamic characteristics of the whole machine related to spatial position. This paper presents a method to identify sensitive parts according to the dynamic stiffness-sensitivity algorithm, which represents the dynamic characteristics of the whole machine tool. In this study, two experiments were carried out, the simulation verification experiment (dynamic experiment with variable stiffness) and modal analysis experiment (vibration test of five-axis gantry milling machine). The key modes of sensitive parts obtained by this method can represent the position-related dynamic characteristics of the whole machine. The characteristic obtained is that the inherent properties of machine-tool structure are independent of excitation. The method proposed i... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ANSYS CFX, computer fluid dynamics, fluid flow simulation, gas mixing, Hydrogen, N2, USP device
An ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) device consists of an evaporation and two reaction zones of equal length, into which an aerosol with a precursor compound enters, and where nanoparticles are formed in the final stage. As part of this research, we simulated the geometry of a side inlet, where the reaction gas (H2) enters into the reaction tube of the device by using numerical methods. Mixing with the carrier gas (N2) occurs at the entry of the H2. In the initial part, we performed a theoretical calculation with a numerical simulation using ANSYS CFX, while the geometries of the basic and studied models were prepared with Solidworks. The inlet geometry of the H2 included a study of the position and radius of the inlet with respect to the reaction tube of the USP device, as well as a study of the angle and diameter of the inlet. In the simulation, we chose the typical flows of both gases (N2, H2) in the range of 5 L/min to 15 L/min. The results show that the best geometry is with the H... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Genetic Algorithm, molar rate control, multi-inlet vortex reactor, residence time distribution
In this article, we describe a prototype photoreactor of which the geometrical configuration was obtained by Genetic Algorithms to maximize the residence time of the reactant gases. A gas reaction mixture of CO2:H2O (1:2 molar ratio) was studied from the fluid dynamic point of view. The two main features of this prototype reactor are the conical shape, which enhances the residence time as compared to a cylindrical shape reference reactor, and the inlet heights and position around the main chamber that enables turbulence and mass transfer control. Turbulence intensity, mixing capability, and residence time attributes for the optimized prototype reactor were calculated with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software and compared with those from a reference reactor. Turbulence intensity near the envisioned catalytic bed was one percentage point higher in the reference than in the optimized prototype reactor. Finally, the homogeneity of the mixture was guaranteed since both types of react... [more]

Analysis of the Dispersion of Viscoelastic Clusters in the Industrial Rotor-Stator Equipment
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, rheology, rotor-stator mixer, shear modulus, viscoelasticity
Materials with complex rheology and viscoelasticity may require special equipment for processing, such as for dispergation. Rheological and mechanical data of the material can help with finding the required equipment or designing equipment. For highly viscous and complex material, a rotor-stator mixer can be a good choice for dispergation. Due to the laminar or creeping mechanism of flow inside the equipment, the dispergation mechanism is assumed to be a combination of the shear stress and slicing of the material by the rotor and stator blades. For the validation of the theory, the mechanical properties of the viscose identified in a previous work were used for comparison with the data from the CFD simulation of the rotor-stator mixer. The comparison showed that the rotor-stator device can overcome the complex shear modulus and ultimate strength of the material and homogenize the solution through a combination of the shear stress and slicing. The theory was also confirmed on the proces... [more]

Numerical computations are usually associated with the High Performance Computing. Nevertheless, both industry and science tend to involve devices with lower power in computations. This is especially true when the data collecting devices are able to partially process them at place, thus increasing the system reliability. This paradigm is known as Edge Computing. In this paper, we propose the use of devices at the edge, with lower computing power, for multi-scale modelling calculations. A system was created, consisting of a high-power device—a two-processor workstation, 8 RaspberryPi 4B microcomputers and 8 NVidia Jetson Nano units, equipped with GPU processor. As a part of this research, benchmarking was performed, on the basis of which the computational capabilities of the devices were classified.
