Influence of Macroscopic Wall Structures on the Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer in Fixed Bed Reactors with Small Tube to Particle Diameter Ratio
Thomas Eppinger, Nico Jurtz, Matthias Kraume.
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD-DEM simulation, fixed bed reactor, Fluid Dynamics, heat transfer, wall structure
Fixed bed reactors are widely used in the chemical, nuclear and process industry. Due to the solid particle arrangement and its resulting non-homogeneous radial void fraction distribution, the heat transfer of this reactor type is inhibited, especially for fixed bed reactors with a small tube to particle diameter ratio. This work shows that, based on three-dimensional particle-resolved discrete element method (DEM) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, it is possible to reduce the maldistribution of mono-dispersed spherical particles near the reactor wall by the use of macroscopic wall structures. As a result, the lateral convection is significantly increased leading to a better radial heat transfer. This is investigated for different macroscopic wall structures, different air flow rates (Reynolds number Re = 16 ...16,000) and a variation of tube to particle diameter ratios (2.8, 4.8, 6.8, 8.8). An increase of the radial velocity of up to 40%, a reduction of the thermal entry... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalyst layer, CFD simulation, gas diffusion layer, multi-phase fuel cells modelling, PEM testing, PEM validation, polymeric membrane, Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
The large-scale adoption of fuel cells system for sustainable power generation will require the combined use of both multidimensional models and of dedicated testing techniques, in order to evolve the current technology beyond its present status. This requires an unprecedented understanding of concurrent and interacting fluid dynamics, material and electrochemical processes. In this review article, Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) are analysed. In the first part, the most common approaches for multi-phase/multi-physics modelling are presented in their governing equations, inherent limitations and accurate materials characterisation for diffusion layers, membrane and catalyst layers. This provides a thorough overview of key aspects to be included in multidimensional CFD models. In the second part, advanced diagnostic techniques are surveyed, indicating testing practices to accurately characterise the cell operation. These can be used to validate models, complementing the... Real-World Failure Prevention Framework for Manufacturing Facilities Using Text Data
Jonghyuk Park, Eunyoung Choi, Yerim Choi.
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, facility failure, pattern mining, pre-failure alert, smart manufacturing, text data analysis
In recent years, manufacturing companies have been continuously engaging in research for the full implementation of smart factories, with many studies on methods to prevent facility failures that directly affect the productivity of the manufacturing sites. However, most studies have only analyzed sensor signals rather than text manually typed by operators. In addition, existing studies have not proposed an actual application system considering the manufacturing site environment but only presented a model that predicts the status or failure of the facility. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a real-world failure prevention framework that alerts the operator by providing a list of possible failure categories based on a failure pattern database before the operator starts work. The failure pattern database is constructed by analyzing and categorizing manually entered text to provide more detailed information. The performance of the proposed framework was evaluated utilizing actual manufa... [more]
Machine Learning-Based Energy System Model for Tissue Paper Machines
Huanhuan Zhang, Jigeng Li, Mengna Hong.
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption, energy system, modeling and simulation, pulp and paper
With the global energy crisis and environmental pollution intensifying, tissue papermaking enterprises urgently need to save energy. The energy consumption model is essential for the energy saving of tissue paper machines. The energy consumption of tissue paper machine is very complicated, and the workload and difficulty of using the mechanism model to establish the energy consumption model of tissue paper machine are very large. Therefore, this article aims to build an empirical energy consumption model for tissue paper machines. The energy consumption of this model includes electricity consumption and steam consumption. Since the process parameters have a great influence on the energy consumption of the tissue paper machines, this study uses three methods: linear regression, artificial neural network and extreme gradient boosting tree to establish the relationship between process parameters and power consumption, and process parameters and steam consumption. Then, the best power cons... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Henry’s coefficient, hydrogen sulfide, ionic liquid, reaction equilibrium constant, solubility
The solubility of hydrogen sulfide in different mole ratios of ferric chloride and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ionic liquid (rFeCl3/[bmim]Cl, r = 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4) at temperatures of 303.15 to 348.15 K and pressures of 100 to 1000 kPa was determined. The total solubility increased with the increase of pressure and the decrease of temperature. The solubility data were fitted using the reaction equilibrium thermodynamic model (RETM). The mean relative error between the predicted value and the measured value was less than 4%. Henry’s coefficient and the equilibrium constant of chemical reaction at each temperature were calculated. Henry’s coefficient first decreased and then increased with the increase of mole ratio, and increased with the increase of temperature. The equilibrium constant of the chemical reaction followed the same law as Henry’s coefficient. The chemical solubility was related to both Henry’s coefficient and the chemical equilibrium constant. H2S had the h... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: IGVF, multiphase pump, numerical simulation, power capability, pressure load
The gas volume fraction (GVF) often changes from time to time in a multiphase pump, causing the power capability of the pump to be increasingly affected. In the purpose of revealing the pressure load characteristics of the multiphase pump impeller blade with the gas-liquid two-phase case, firstly, a numerical simulation which uses the SST k-ω turbulence model is verified with an experiment. Then, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software is employed to investigate the variation characteristics of static pressure and pressure load of the multiphase pump impeller blade under the diverse inlet gas volume fractions (IGVFs) and flow rates. The results show that the effect of IGVF on the head and hydraulic efficiency at a small flow rate is obviously less than that at design and large flow rates. The static pressure on the blade pressure side (PS) is scarcely affected by the IGVF. However, the IGVF has an evident effect on the static pressure on the impeller blade suction side (SS). Mo... Estimating Breakup Frequencies in Industrial Emulsification Devices: The Challenge of Inferring Local Frequencies from Global Methods
Andreas Håkansson.
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: breakup frequency, emulsification, fragmentation rate, high-pressure homogenizer, rotor-stator mixer, turbulent drop breakup
Experimental methods to study the breakup frequency in industrial devices are increasingly important. Since industrial production-scale devices are often inaccessible to single-drop experiments, breakup frequencies for these devices can only be studied with “global methods”; i.e., breakup frequency estimated from analyzing emulsification-experiment data. However, how much can be said about the local breakup frequencies (e.g., needed in modelling) from these global estimates? This question is discussed based on insights from a numerical validation procedure where set local frequencies are compared to global estimates. It is concluded that the global methods provide a valid estimate of local frequencies as long as the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy is fairly homogenous throughout the device (although a residence-time-correction, suggested in this contribution, is needed as long as the flow is not uniform in the device). For the more realistic case of an inhomogeneous breaku... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: in silico modeling, pharmaceutical crystallization, pilot-scale, scale-up, uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, validation
There are many published models for predicting crystal size distribution (CSD) in the literature. However, none of them have been independently and comprehensively tested, which is important for industrial acceptance and confidence of these models. Therefore, in this study, using solubility and kinetic data from the literature, an in silico tool for predicting the crystallization process performance of a model compound system (paracetamol in ethanol) was developed and challenged by independent experiments at the 50 L pilot scale. The solute concentration was tracked, and the final CSD was quantified using three measurement techniques including a novel image analysis tool. The reported parameter uncertainties were also addressed using Monte Carlo simulations. The results showed that, when the models were used within their validity range (e.g., suspended solids), they were able to describe the observed process trends/dynamics (CSD and solute concentration) under varying experimental cond... Fahsai Kantawong.
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chromatin remodeling, epigenetics, hydrogels, reprogramming, transdifferentiation
Currently there is a big drive to generate neurons from differentiated cells which would be of great benefit for regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and drug screening. Most studies used transcription factors, epigenetic reprogramming and/or chromatin remodeling drugs which might reflect incomplete reprogramming or progressive deregulation of the new program. In this review, we present a potential different method for cellular reprogramming/transdifferentiation to potentially enhance regeneration of neurons. We focus on the use of biomaterials, specifically hydrogels, to act as non-invasive tools to direct transdifferentiation, and we draw parallel with existing transcriptional and epigenetic methods. Hydrogels are attractive materials because the properties of hydrogels can be modified, and various natural and synthetic substances can be employed. Incorporation of extracellular matrix (ECM) substances and composite materials allows mechanical properties and degradation rate to b... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DEM, interaction properties, rapeseed, response surface methodology, Simulation
The discrete element method (DEM) for modeling the behavior of particulate material is highly dependent on the use of appropriate and accurate parameters. In this study, a seed metering DEM simulation was used to measure, calibrate, and verify the physical and interactional parameters of rapeseed. The coefficients of restitution and static friction between rapeseeds and three common materials (aluminum alloy, acrylic, and high-density polyethylene) were measured using free drop and sliding ramp tests, respectively. The angle of repose was determined using a hollow cylinder experiment, which was duplicated using a DEM simulation, to examine the effects of static and rolling friction coefficients on the angle of repose. Response surface optimization was performed to determine the optimized model parameters using a Box−Behnken design test. A metering device was made with three materials, and rapeseed seeding was simulated at different working speeds to verify the calibrated parameters. Th... [more]
Ontology-Based Process Modelling-with Examples of Physical Topologies

Keywords: computational engineering, digital twin, model-based, process simulation
Reductionism and splitting application domain into disciplines and identify the smallest required model-granules, termed ”basic entity” combined with systematic construction of the behaviour equations for the basic entities, yields a systematic approach to process modelling. We do not aim toward a single modelling domain, but we enable to address specific application domains and object inheritance. We start with reductionism and demonstrate how the basic entities are depending on the targeted application domain. We use directed graphs to capture process models, and we introduce a new concept, which we call ”tokens” that enables us to extend the context beyond physical systems. The network representation is hierarchical so as to capture complex systems. The interacting basic entities are defined in the leave nodes of the hierarchy, making the overall model the interacting networks in the leave nodes. Multi-disciplinary and multi-scale models result in a network of networks. We identify... [more]

Keywords: cell production, confluence estimation, deep learning, laboratory automation, mesenchymal stem cells
Laboratory automation is a key driver in biotechnology and an enabler for powerful new technologies and applications. In particular, in the field of personalized therapies, automation in research and production is a prerequisite for achieving cost efficiency and broad availability of tailored treatments. For this reason, we present the StemCellDiscovery, a fully automated robotic laboratory for the cultivation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in small scale and in parallel. While the system can handle different kinds of adherent cells, here, we focus on the cultivation of adipose-derived hMSCs. The StemCellDiscovery provides an in-line visual quality control for automated confluence estimation, which is realized by combining high-speed microscopy with deep learning-based image processing. We demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm to detect hMSCs in culture at different densities and calculate confluences based on the resulting image. Furthermore, we show that the StemCellD... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: baffles, output power, SCPPS, velocity uniformity
The solar chimney power plant system (abbreviated as SCPPS) is a clean and pollution-free facility for generating electric power. To improve the generating efficiency, a bank of baffles can be arranged under the collector in SCPPS. ANSYS Fluent 18.2 was used to numerically simulate 3D models of SCPPS with or without baffles, and an experimental apparatus was built for verification. There are seven different types of model discussed here: the SCPPS without baffles (prototype), and other six types of models with different baffles (a-type, b-type, c-type, d-type, e-type, and f-type). The pressure fields, temperature fields, velocity fields, and power outputs of different models under the different baffles are discussed. It is shown that the addition of baffles in the system can increase the temperature field, pressure field, velocity field, and power output to varying degrees, but b-type baffles better improve the temperature and velocity uniformity of the system, and intensify the output... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate change, heat resource effectiveness, hourly accumulated temperature simulation, rice potential yield
During the rice growing season, farmers’ decisions about cropping systems and seed varieties directly affect the utilization of heat resource, and eventually affect the potential yield. In this study, we used the hourly accumulated temperature model to calculate the available heat resource as well as the effective heat resource in southern China. We conducted a spatiotemporal analysis of the heat resource effectiveness during rice growing season and an impact assessment of heat resource effectiveness on rice potential yield and cereal yield reduction. The results showed that, during the period of 1951−2015, heat resource effectiveness generally declined in the rice cropping area of southern China. And this decrease worsened during the most recent three decades compared with the period of 1951−1980. A strong correlation was detected between heat resource effectiveness and rice potential yield in the study area. When the effective heat resource during the growing season increased by 1 °C... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: betel nuts, carbon cycle, enhanced vegetation index, GHG flux measurements
Perennial woody crops could have a positive impact on carbon balance, absorbing carbon during growing season and storing it for several years, whereas annual crops do not have this particular effect. Usually, techniques for GHG (greenhouse gases) flux measurements have limited spatial representativeness, with some difficulties to extend leaf measurements to field scale. Models, especially if supported by remote sensing data, allow for upscaling the monitoring of these fluxes. The aim of this work was to evaluate the carbon fluxes (gross primary production, GPP; net ecosystem production, NEP) of the betel nut cultivars in Taiwan by a vegetation photosynthesis model (VPM). The model permitted estimating seasonal dynamics of GPP in a moist tropical evergreen forest. These plantations are very common in Taiwan and their role could be significant in environmental and development policies even though, until now, the consumption of the fruit of this tree is at the center of controversy due to... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow rate, multiphase pump, numerical simulation, pressurized unit, turbulence dissipation rate
The turbulence dissipation will cause the increment of energy loss in the multiphase pump and deteriorate the pump performance. In order to research the turbulence dissipation rate distribution characteristics in the pressurized unit of the multiphase pump, the spiral axial flow type multiphase pump is researched numerically in the present study. This research is focused on the turbulence dissipation rate distribution characteristics in the directions of inlet to outlet, hub to rim, and in the circumferential direction of the rotating impeller blades. Numerical simulation based on the RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier−Stokes equations) and the k-ω SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model has been carried out. The numerical method is verified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental data. Results show that the regions of the large turbulence dissipation rate are mainly at the inlet and outlet of the rotating impeller and static impeller, while it is almost zero from th... [more]

Multipurpose stirring and blending vessels equipped with various impeller systems are indispensable in the pharmaceutical industry because of the high flexibility necessary during multiproduct manufacturing. On the other hand, process scale-up and scale-down during process development and transfer from bench or pilot to manufacturing scale, or the design of so-called scale-down models (SDMs), is a difficult task due to the geometrical differences of used vessels. The present work comprises a hybrid approach to predict mixing times from pilot to manufacturing scale for geometrical nonsimilar vessels equipped with single top, bottom or multiple eccentrically located impellers. The developed hybrid approach is based on the experimental characterization of mixing time in the dedicated equipment and evaluation of the vessel-averaged energy dissipation rate employing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using single-phase steady-state simulations. Obtained data are consequently used to develop... [more]

Keywords: discrete element method, flight configuration, industrial wastewaters, operational conditions, rotary drum dryer
In this study, a new type of rotary dryer filled with inert alumina ceramic bead (ACB) fillers was introduced to treat the industrial wastewater, e.g., the high-salt wastewater and landfill leachate. Numerical simulations based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) on the motion trajectory of ACB fillers in the rotary dryer were conducted, and the parameters of flight structure, rotational speed, and filling degree on the dynamic behavior of ACB fillers were optimized. Keywords: biochar, heavy metals, HYDRUS modeling, stormwater treatment
This research investigated the removal of heavy metal ions (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) and metalloid (As) common to stormwater runoff onto biochar-based media arranged in multiple configurations. Laboratory scale column experiments were conducted to quantify heavy metal removal efficiencies using sand, biochar, and nZVI-modified biochar (BC-nZVI) in four media configurations: a homogeneous mixture of sand and biochar (BCM); biochar layered in sand (BCL); BC-nZVI layered in sand (BCZ); and sand as a control. An inverse modeling approach was implemented to measured moisture and experimental data to determine media hydraulic parameters (θr, θs, α, n and Ks) and adsorption coefficients. The experiment was conducted using laboratory synthesized stormwater over 200 days at a rate of 5 cm/day. BCZ exhibited an excellent removal (99%) of As due to the high attachment to nZVI, via surface complexations. Biochar with abundant surface oxygen functional groups exhibited a great (99%) removal of Cd and Zn... [more]

Keywords: CFD–DEM coupling method, Fluid Dynamics, heat transfer, liquid-solid stirred tanks
The heat transfer and hydrodynamics of particle flows in stirred tanks are investigated numerically in this paper by using a coupled CFD−DEM method combined with a standard k-e turbulence model. Particle−fluid and particle−particle interactions, and heat transfer processes are considered in this model. The numerical method is validated by comparing the calculated results of our model to experimental results of the thermal convection of gas-particle flows in a fluidized bed published in the literature. This coupling model of computational fluid dynamics and discrete element (CFD−DEM) method, which could calculate the particle behaviors and individual particle temperature clearly, has been applied for the first time to the study of liquid-solid flows in stirred tanks with convective heat transfers. This paper reports the effect of particles on the temperature field in stirred tanks. The effects on the multiphase flow convective heat transfer of stirred tanks without and with baffles as w... In situ Bio-Methanation (BM) is a recently developed biogas upgrading technique which finds application also in the Power to Gas (P2G) field. In this study a novel configuration of BM digester, the randomly packed Gas Stirred Tank Reactor (GSTR), was modelled. A 49 L reactor, in thermophilic conditions (55 °C) and at atmospheric pressure, was filled up with random packing on which the microbial populations could adhere. The feedstock used was Second Cheese Whey (SCW), liquid waste of cheese factories, rich in lactose (38 g/L), and its flowrate was chosen to obtain a Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) of 30 days. The process was analyzed for different hydrogen inlet flowrates of 10 mL/min and 50 mL/min. The produced biogas was also recirculated in the reactor in order to transfer, into the liquid phase, as much hydrogen as possible. The model parameters were estimated by means of stationary state information of the reactor working without hydrogen injection, while a dynamical fitting was ne... [more]

Keywords: cell optimization, gravure printing, shear-thickening liquid, VOF method
Based on the actual measurement of the shear-thickening properties of water-based inks, in order to improve the ink transfer rate, the PLIC (Piecewise Linear Interface Construction) interface tracking method and the VOF (Volume of Fluid) method are used to simulate the transfer process of the shear-thickening liquid between the U-shaped cell and the upwardly moving plate. The effects of substrate surface wettability, cell contact angle, and cell depth on liquid transfer were studied. The results showed that all can increase the liquid transfer rate, and the change of the cell contact angle also led to the difference in the breaking time of the liquid filament. In addition, the shallow plate effect was discovered in the study of cell depth. The shallow plate effect is a phenomenon by which the amount of liquid transferred and the liquid transfer rate are greatly improved when the depth of the cell decreases to a certain limit value. In addition, for the U-shaped cell, the optimization m... [more]

Keywords: cake filtration, CFD-DEM, direct numerical simulation, lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM), pressurized housing experiments, solid-liquid separation, woven filter media
In cake filtration processes, where particles in a suspension are separated by forming a filter cake on the filter medium, the resistances of filter cake and filter medium cause a specific pressure drop which consequently defines the process energy effort. The micromechanics of the filter cake formation (interactions between particles, fluid, other particles and filter medium) must be considered to describe pore clogging, filter cake growth and consolidation correctly. A precise 3D modeling approach to describe these effects is the resolved coupling of the Computational Fluid Dynamics with the Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM). This work focuses on the development and validation of a CFD-DEM model, which is capable to predict the filter cake formation during solid-liquid separation accurately. The model uses the Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) to directly solve the flow equations in the CFD part of the coupling and the DEM for the calculation of particle interactions. The developed mode...
