February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning, doubly-fed induction generators, Machine Learning, power electronic control system, renewable energy sources, smart grid, wind energy, wind turbine standards
Wind-driven turbines utilizing the doubly-fed induction generators aligned with the progressed IEC 61400 series standards have engrossed specific consideration as of their benefits, such as adjustable speed, consistent frequency mode of operation, self-governing competencies for voltage and frequency control, active and reactive power controls, and maximum power point tracking approach at the place of shared connection. Such resource combinations into the existing smart grid system cause open-ended problems regarding the security and reliability of power system dynamics, which needs attention. There is a prospect of advancing the art of wind turbine-operated doubly-fed induction generator control systems. This section assesses the smart grid-integrated power system dynamics, characteristics, and causes of instabilities. These instabilities are unclear in the wind and nonlinear load predictions, leading to a provisional load-rejection response. Here, machine learning computations and tr... [more]

Natural Ventilation Enhancement of a Roof Solar Chimney with Wind-Induced Channel
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: inclination angle, numerical simulation, roof solar chimney, ventilation rate
A novel roof solar chimney with wind-induced channel was designed herein to augment indoor natural ventilation under combined action of wind and solar energy. Compared with the traditional solar chimney, the new rooftop solar chimney improves the air flow due to the wind-induced channel. The effects of channel width ratio, chimney inclination at different outdoor wind speeds on the natural ventilation performance of the roof solar chimney were studied by numerical simulation. Finite-volume method was used for the numerical calculation. It was found that the trends of ventilation rate are different when the channel widths increase. The mass flow rate of the new structure increases with the increase in the inclination angle. When the inclination angles increase from 30° to 90°, the ventilation rate increases by 212% for U = 1.0 m·s−1, 166% for U = 2.0 m·s−1, and 127% for U = 3.0 m·s−1 under the condition of and the solar radiation I = 600 W·m−2.

Design of Energy-Saving Duct for JBC to Reduce Ship Resistance by CFD Method
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD resistance test, energy-saving device (ESD), nominal wake, stern duct, viscous flow, viscous free surface simulation
The present work is to modify the stern duct of Japan bulk carrier (JBC) to reduce the ship total resistance for Froude number 0.142. The research method is to use the CFD (computational fluid dynamics) tool OpenFOAM to predict the total resistance and viscous flow field around the ship hull considering the free surface. First, the V&V (verification and validation) analysis was conducted to ensure our CFD method is reliable, and to estimate its error and uncertainty range for the original JBC with and without the original stern duct. Second, the angle of attack (AoA) of the foil section of the stern duct was adjusted, thus forming a series of different ducts axisymmetric along the propeller shaft axis. The CFD simulations were performed for each duct appended behind the ship hull. By comparing the total resistance with and without the duct, the ship hull resistance reduction effect caused by the duct would be obtained. Finally, the duct with 7° AoA achieved the best resistance reductio... [more]

Real-Time Methane Prediction in Underground Longwall Coal Mining Using AI
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: artificial intelligence (AI), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), methane prediction, modified long short-term memory, real-time, time series prediction, underground coal mines
Detecting the formation of explosive methane−air mixtures in a longwall face is still a challenging task. Even though atmospheric monitoring systems and computational fluid dynamics modeling are utilized to inspect methane concentrations, they are not sufficient as a warning system in critical regions, such as near cutting drums, in real-time. The long short-term memory algorithm has been established to predict and manage explosive gas zones in longwall mining operations before explosions happen. This paper introduces a novel methodology with an artificial intelligence algorithm, namely, modified long short-term memory, to detect the formation of explosive methane−air mixtures in the longwall face and identify possible explosive gas accumulations prior to them becoming hazards. The algorithm was trained and tested based on CFD model outputs for six locations of the shearer for similar locations and operational conditions of the cutting machine. Results show that the algorithm can predi... [more]

Current Source Converter as an Effective Interface to Interconnect Microgrid and Main Grid
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: current source converter, dwell time, nine-switch, space vector modulation
Back-to-back current source converters play an important role in high power applications. However, this back-to-back converter system uses a larger number of power switches, which is associated with more cost and the power density of the converter system can be affected. To address this issue, in this paper, a novel nine-switch back-to-back current source converter is proposed. To realize proper modulation of this nine-switch converter system, the concept of ampere balance is revisited at first. Then, its relationship with the traditional modulation scheme is revealed. Moreover, based on the ampere balance, the real-time dwell time calculation method is developed, where the tracking of rectifier current and inverter current is taken into consideration simultaneously. Finally, simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed modulation scheme.

CFD Modeling of Pressure Drop through an OCP Server for Data Center Applications
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, data center, OCP server, OpenFoam, porosity modeling
Modeling IT equipment is of critical importance for the simulations of flow and thermal structures in air cooled data centers. Turbulent flow undergoes a significant pressure drop through the server due to the energy losses originating from the internal components. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a fast and an accurate method for the calculation of pressure losses inside server components for data center applications. In this study, high resolution numerical simulations were performed on an OCP (Open Compute Project) server under various inlet flow rates for inactive and active conditions. Meanwhile, one key challenge of modeling complete geometry of the server results from using an intense mesh even for a single server. To address this challenge, the server was modeled as a porous zone to mimic inertia and viscous resistance in a realistic way. Comparison of the results of porous and complete models showed that the proposed model could calculate pressure drop accurately... [more]

Simulation and Study of DC Corona Discharge Characteristics of Bar-Plate Gap
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air, bar-plate gap, DC negative corona, discharge morphology, heavy particles distribution, plasma model
In this paper, the corona discharge process of the bar-plate gap at −1 kV DC voltage is simulated using a two-dimensional axisymmetric plasma module. We analyze the variation of air negative corona discharge current, and the distribution morphology of microparticles in different discharge stages in detail. The significance of plasma chemical reactions at some typical time and the distribution characteristics of heavy particles are investigated according to reaction rates. Results show that, in the current rising stage, the collision ionization reactions (e.g., R1 and R2) and electron adsorption reaction (e.g., R3) play a major role, which lead to the increase in charged particles and the formation of an electron avalanche. In the current drop stage, all reaction rates decreased, except for collision ionization and electron attachment, partial charge transfer reactions (e.g., R8, R10, R11, and R14), and composite reactions (e.g., R16, R17, and R18), which come into play and gradually re... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air pollution, air quality modeling, ANN, PM10 forecasting
Air pollution has a major impact on human health, especially in cities, and elevated concentrations of PMx are responsible for a large number of premature deaths each year. Therefore, the amount of PM10 in the air is monitored and forecasts are made to predict the air quality. In Poland, mainly deterministic models are used to predict air pollution. Accordingly, research efforts are being made to develop other models to forecast the ambient PM10 levels. The aim of the study was to compare the machine learning models for predicting PM10 levels in the air in the city of Lublin. The following machine learning models were used: Linear regression (LR), K-Nearest Neighbors Regression (KNNR), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Regression Trees (RT), Gaussian Process Regression Models (GPR), Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Long Short-Term Memory network (LSTM). The collected data for three consecutive years (January 2017 to December 2019) were used to develop the models. In total, 19 parameters... [more]

CFD Simulation of Co-Planar Multi-Rotor Wind Turbine Aerodynamic Performance Based on ALM Method
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aerodynamic performance, CFD numerical simulation, co-planar, multi-rotor wind turbine, near-wake flow
Considering requirements such as enhanced unit capacity, the geometric size of wind turbine blades has been increasing; this, in turn, results in a rapid increase in manufacturing costs. To this end, in this paper, we examine the aerodynamics of co-planar multi-rotor wind turbines to achieve higher unit capacity at a lower blade length. The multiple wind rotors are in the same plane with no overlaps. The ALM-LES method is used to investigate the interaction effect of the blade tip vortices, by revealing the regulation of aerodynamic performance and flow field characteristics of the multi-rotor wind turbines. The simulated results suggest an observable reduction in the blade tip vortices generated by blades located closely together, due to the breaking and absorption of the blade tip vortices by the two rotors. This results in increased aerodynamic performance and loads on the multi-rotor wind turbine. The influence between the blade tip vortex is mainly located in the range of 0.2 R fr... [more]

Uniformity of Supply Air in the Plenum for Under-Floor Air Distribution Ventilation in a Circular Conference Room: A CFD Study
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD simulation, non-uniformity coefficient, underfloor air distribution, uniform air supply
Underfloor air distribution (UFAD) systems are increasingly used for their advantages in improving energy savings, indoor air quality, and thermal comfort. In UFAD systems, an underfloor plenum delivers conditioned air to the air supply diffusers. The distribution of internal air velocity and static pressure in plenums determines the uniformity of the airflow to the occupied zones. As a result, the plenum has a detrimental effect on the characteristics of the supply air and, thus, the resulting indoor air quality and thermal comfort. Nevertheless, most existing studies on underfloor plenums focused on small-scale plenums with a single internal air duct. Large plenums and multiple air ducts in UFAD equipped in large premises are underexplored. In this study, a circular underfloor plenum with a large scale (radius of 15 m, height difference of 0.9−2.9 m) and 503 under-seat diffusers in a conference room was studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation (ANSYS Fluent (16.0))... Numerical Investigation on Thermal−Hydraulic Performance of a Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger for Liquid Air Energy Storage System
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: compressed air–water heat transfer, Computational Fluid Dynamics, printed circuit heat exchanger, thermal–hydraulic performance, wavy channel
A printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) is utilized to cool the compressor inlet air to increase the compression efficiency in a liquid air energy storage and liquid natural gas (LNG) coupled system, which can offer large-scale energy storage with significantly improved exergy efficiency and round-trip efficiency. In this work, the effect of pressure of air, incline angle, and hydraulic diameter on the performance of a compressed air−water PCHE with a semicircle cross-section was studied. The results show that PCHE can realize the intermediate cooling of air compression in the liquid air energy storage system, and the pressure variation of air shows a limited effect on the heat transfer of PCHE; however, the hydraulic diameter and the incline angle both affect the heat transfer and the flow resistance of PCHE, and the best incline angle is 15°.

Impact of Passive-Components’ Models on the Stability Assessment of Inverter-Dominated Power Grids
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: inverter-based resources, line modelling, load modelling, modular multilevel converters, power system analysis, small-signal stability, transient stability
Power systems are experiencing some profound changes, which are posing new challenges in many different ways. One of the most significant of such challenges is the increasing presence of inverter-based resources (ibrs), both as loads and generators. This calls for new approaches and a wide reconsideration of the most commonly established practices in almost all the levels of power systems’ analysis, operation, and planning. This paper focuses specifically on the impacts on stability analyses of the numerical models of power system passive components (e.g., lines, transformers, along with their on-load tap changers). Traditionally, loads have been modelled as constant power loads, being this both a conservative option for what concerns stability results and a computationally convenient simplification. However, compared to their counterparts above, in some operating conditions ibrs can effectively be considered real constant power loads, whose behaviour is much more complex in terms of t... [more]

Theoretical Prediction on Hydraulic Lift of a Coandă Effect-Based Mining Collector for Manganese Nodule
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Coandă effect, collector, curved wall jets, deep-sea mining, manganese nodules, pick-up device
The undersea collecting vehicle is one of the three main parts in the deep-sea exploitation system. The Coandă effect-based collector picks up manganese nodules by providing an adverse pressure difference over the nodule, through the jet flowing around a curved wall. In order to overcome the drawbacks of repeated prototyping and experimenting in the traditional design procedure of the Coandă effect-based collector, the theoretical guide should be well placed to ensure correct design of the strongly related parameters of the collector. In this paper, a simplified model of curved wall jets was developed and the solution of approximate closed form was obtained to predict the lift force of the nodules. The variational tendencies of velocity, pressure and single-particle lift index perpendicular to the curved wall were investigated and the Coandă effects were found to be stronger with higher initial velocity, higher non-dimensional jet slot height and lower non-dimensional wall height. Adaptive Control of Streetlights Using Deep Learning for the Optimization of Energy Consumption during Late Hours
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: adaptive control, deep learning, energy consumption, image processing, power saving, streetlights
This paper presents an adaptive control scheme for streetlights by optimizing the energy consumed using deep learning during late hours at night. A city’s infrastructure is not complete without a proper lightening system for streets and roads. The streetlight systems often consume up to 50% of the electricity utilized by the city. Due to this reason, it has a huge financial impact on the electricity generation of the city. Furthermore, continuous luminosity of the streetlights contributes to the environmental pollution as well. Economists and ecologists around the globe are working hard to reduce the global impact of continued utilization of streetlights at night. In regard to a developing country which is already struggling to produce enough electrical energy to fulfill its industry requirements, proposing a system to lessen the load of the energy utilization by the streetlights should be beneficial. Therefore, an innovative and novel energy efficient streetlight control system is pre... [more]

Full Implementation of Electric Mobility in a Countryside Region of Spain
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charging stations, e-mobility, electric vehicles, Simulation, transportation
The ongoing spread of electric sustainable mobility is transforming the local ways of transport in metropolitan areas. This is meant to be extended outside of big cities in the near future thanks to new technological developments. Little towns should adapt to these changes, as they are located geographically far from the big cities and are generally characterized by low economic and demographic indicators. Hence, little towns must keep pace with these changes in mobility to avoid being isolated from the main cities in a country. People living in the countryside usually move toward big cities for various reasons, either related to work or living necessities. Therefore, it must be possible to conduct usual displacements through the use of electric vehicles (EVs), i.e., reaching the destinations and supplying the batteries through charging infrastructures. This paper studies the full implementation of electric mobility applied in the case of Cuenca, a city located in middle Spain. A brief... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: direct methanol fuel cell, methanol oxidation reaction, Modelling, nanocatalysts, oxygen reduction reaction, passive feed
Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) have attracted much attention due to their potential application as a power source for portable devices. Their simple construction and operation, associated with compact design, high energy density, and relatively high energy-conversion efficiency, give the DMFCs an advantage over other promising energy production technologies in terms of portability. Nowadays, research on DMFCs has received increased attention in both academics and industries. However, many challenges remain before these systems become commercial, including their costs and durability. As a key material with a high-value cost, noble metal catalysts for both the anode and cathode sides face several problems, which hinder the commercialisation of DMFCs. This paper provides a detailed comprehensive review of recent progress in the development of nanocatalysts (NCs) for the anode and cathode reactions of DMFCs, based on Platinum, Platinum-hybrid, and Platinum-free materials. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twin, hybrid analysis and modeling, offshore wind turbine, reduce order model
Predicting the output power of wind generators is essential to improve grid flexibility, which is vulnerable to power supply variability and uncertainty. Digital twins can help predict the output of a wind turbine using a variety of environmental data generated by real-world systems. This paper dealt with the development of a physics-based output prediction model (P-bOPM) for a 10 MW floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) for a digital twin. The wind power generator dealt with in this paper was modeled considering the NREL 5 MW standard wind turbine with a semi-submersible structure. A P-bOPM of a 10 MW FOWT for a digital twin was designed and simulated using ANSYS Twin Builder. By connecting the P-bOPM developed for the digital twin implementation with an external sensor through TCP/IP communication, it was possible to calculate the output of the wind turbine using real-time field data. As a result of evaluating the P-bOPM for various marine environments, it showed good accuracy. The d... [more]
