Intentions to Use Prosumer Photovoltaic Technology in Poland
Anna Mularczyk, Iwona Zdonek, Marian Turek, Stanisław Tokarski
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumer attitude, purchase intention, solar photovoltaic technology, structural equation modeling
The energy transition that Poland is facing directs investment and research efforts towards renewable energy sources (RES). This topic has gained importance due to environmental and climate reasons and, recently, the ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine. All these issues affect the availability and prices of fossil fuels, on which electricity production in Poland currently depends. Therefore, to change the current state of affairs, it is necessary to turn to other sources of energy, including RES. Particularly high hopes are placed on prosumer photovoltaic (PV) technology. Therefore, it becomes important to study the factors of acceptance of this technology among the Polish society. The aim of this paper is to answer two research questions: (1) what factors shape intentions to invest in prosumer PV technology and (2) what factors shape attitudes towards this technology. The research was conducted using a questionnaire on a sample of 430 people. Data analysis was perform... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole stability, disturbance state concept, elastic–plastic deformation, finite element method, numerical simulation
This paper carries out a study on the numerical simulation of borehole instability based on the disturbance state concept. By introducing the disturbance damage factor into the classical Mohr−Coulomb yield criterio, we establish a finite element hydro-mechanical coupling model of borehole instability and program the relevant field variable by considering elastic−plastic deformation in borehole instability, the distribution of the damage disturbance area, the variation of porosity and permeability with the disturbance damage factor, etc. Numerical simulation shows that the borehole stability is related to the action time of drilling fluid on the wellbore, stress anisotropy, the internal friction angle of rock, and borehole pressure. A higher horizontal stress difference helps suppress shear instability, and a higher rock internal friction angle enhances shear failure around the borehole along the maximum horizontal principal stress. When considering the effect of the internal friction a... [more]

Miguel Louro, Luís Ferreira
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cable failure types, classification, Machine Learning, MV cable networks
Electrical utilities performance is measured by various indicators, of which the most important are very dependent on the interruption time after a failure in the network has occurred, such as SAIDI. Therefore, they are constantly looking for new techniques to decrease the fault location and repair times. A possibility to innovate in this field is to estimate the failed network component when a fault occurs. This paper presents the conclusion of an analysis carried out by the authors with the aim to estimate failure types of underground MV networks based on observable indirect variables. The variables needed to carry out the analysis must be available shortly after the failure occurrence, which is facilitated by a smart-grid infrastructure, to allow for a quick estimation. This paper uses the groundwork already carried out by the authors on ambient variables, historical variables, and disturbance recordings to design an estimator to predict between four MV cable network failure types.... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex systems, electricity demand, empirical mode decomposition, energy systems, nonlinear analysis, recurrence plot, time series
In the new energy systems’ modeling paradigm with high temporal and spatial resolutions, the complexity of renewable resources and demand dynamics is a major obstacle for the scenario analysis of future energy systems and the design of sustainable solutions. Most advanced models are indeed currently restricted by past temporal energy demand data, improper for the analysis of future systems and often insufficient in terms of quantity or spatial resolution. A deeper understanding on energy demand dynamics is thus necessary to improve energy system models and expand their possibilities. The present study introduces noise-assisted multivariate empirical mode decomposition and recurrence quantification analysis for the study of this problematic variable with a case study of Japan’s electricity demand data per region. These tools are adapted to nonlinear, complex systems’ data and are already applied in a wide range of scientific fields including climate studies. The decomposition of electri... [more]
Intake System Performance Stability as a Function of Flow Throttling
Adam Kozakiewicz, Stanisław Kachel, Michał Frant, Maciej Majcher
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, flow modeling, intake vortex, jet engine intake system, unstable engine operation
This paper presents a numerical analysis of the stability of the flow parameters along the intake duct of an aircraft jet turbine engine. This problem has been investigated by many research teams and was included in the literature analysis. The unstable operation of a turbojet intake system can be the consequence of many adverse factors, including an intake vortex. The investigated intake system, due to its low location to the plane of the airport, is highly susceptible to the formation of an intake vortex. The phenomenon of an intake vortex can, in the worst-case scenario, result in the surging of the turbojet, and even engine stalling. This paper presents a developed model of the forward section of an aircraft, complete with its intake duct, and the method of its discretization. The intake-system model and numerical analysis were performed in Ansys Fluent. The flow parameters adopted for numerical simulations, under specific boundary conditions, corresponded to the operating conditio... [more]

Keywords: heat reflectivity, nanospheres, polymer insulation, thermal conductivity
In this paper, a method to determine the thermal conductivity coefficient λ in a 200 μm thick heat reflective paint layer, filled with polymer nanospheres with a Total Solar Reflectance (TSR) of 86.95%, is proposed and presented. For this purpose, a “hot box”-type (cube-shaped) test rig was built to carry out experimental tests to measure the temperature distribution on the surface of a double-layer wall containing the material under investigation. Together with the experimental studies, a CFD numerical model was prepared to understand the nature of flow and heat transfer inside the cube—the test chamber. Based on the proposed measurement and analysis method, the thermal conductivity coefficient of the heat reflective coating layer was λ = 0.0007941 W/m∙K.

Wenlei Lian, Yu Zhu, Zijian Sun
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow boiling, heat transfer characteristics, numerical simulation, rotating liquid film, visual experimental research
A three-dimensional numerical model is established to study the flow boiling heat transfer characteristics of the liquid film in a rotating pipe, and the effectiveness of the model is verified by a comparison between the numerical results and the experimental results. The effects of rotational speed, heat flux, and Coriolis force on the characteristics of heat transfer of the rotating liquid film are investigated. The conclusions are drawn as follows: (1) The convection of the rotating liquid film is enhanced while the nucleate boiling in the rotating liquid film is inhibited by the increase in the rotational speed; (2) With the influence of these two factors, the heat transfer coefficient increases with centrifugal acceleration increasing from 20 g to 40 g, then decreases with centrifugal acceleration increasing from 40 g to 120 g; (3) The turbulent intensity of the flow with Coriolis force is obviously increased compared to that without Coriolis force when the centrifugal acceleratio... Keywords: blade optimization, CO2 power cycle, computational fluid dynamic (CFD), preliminary design, radial outflow turbine
Recently, the CO2 power cycle has attracted attention because of tightening environmental regulations. The turbine is a factor that greatly affects the efficiency of the cycle. The radial outflow turbine is a turbomachine with the various advantages of an axial flow turbine and a radial inflow turbine, but the design theory for the turbine is uncertain. In this study, a preliminary design algorithm for a radial outflow turbine with a multi-stage configuration is presented. To verify the preliminary design algorithm, a preliminary design for a two-stage radial outflow turbine for a CO2 power cycle was carried out, and a computational fluid dynamic analysis was performed. Consequently, values close to the target performance were obtained, but blade optimization was performed to obtain more satisfactory results. The final geometry of the radial outflow turbine was obtained through optimization considering the blade exit angle related to the deviation angle, blade maximum thickness-true ch... [more]

Sami Ernez, François Morency
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aircraft ground deicing (AGD), extended enthalpy–porosity technique, multi-region model, particulate two-phase flows, spray tip penetration (STP), spraying parameters
The aircraft ground deicing (AGD) process is a mandatory step before taking off in a cold climate. The development of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) tools to simulate AGD could help the industry reduce its costs and limit pollution. Previous works have modelled some parts of the AGD process. Building on these previous works, this paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) CFD algorithm to simulate the process in full scale. The algorithm comprises a multi-region model where a Lagrangian method solves the spray particle equations, and an enthalpy−porosity approach with an Eulerian method simulates the ice melting. The multi-region approach is verified in this paper through a spray-tip penetration (STP) test. The STP predicted using the multi-region model had 99% agreement with the STP predicted using a Lagrangian method. Therefore, the multi-region technique correctly modeled the particle momentum between the two regions. This paper also presents a numerical calibration of the permeabi... [more]

Keywords: ConnectFlow, DFN, fracture, GDF, hydrogeochemistry, repository, transport
A new method for simulating solute transport and geochemical interactions within fractured rock is presented. This will be an important capability for assessing the safety of radioactive waste disposal facilities that are located within fractured crystalline bedrock. Specifically, the discrete fracture network (DFN) module within the ConnectFlow groundwater flow and transport software has been updated to: (i) simulate the advection and diffusion of more than one solute species (with the flow and transport equations coupled by the evolving density and viscosity); (ii) model the diffusion of solutes into the rock matrix between fractures; and (iii) utilise the iPhreeqc library to model chemical reactions involving solutes, minerals on fracture/pore surfaces and rock minerals. The performance of ConnectFlow’s DFN module has also been significantly improved via parallelisation which allows more complex calculations to be attempted. These developments are significant because hydrogeochemist... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: inductive power and data transmission, interconnected oscillators, wireless sensors
An inductively powered passive transmitter architecture for wireless sensornodes is presented in this paper. The intended applications are inductively powered internally illuminated photoreactors. The application range of photoreactors is wide. They are used, e.g., for microalgae cultivation or for photochemistry, just to name two important fields of use. The inductive powering system used to transmit energy to the wireless internal illumination system is to be additionally used to supply the here presented transmitter. The aim of expanding the named internal illuminated photoreactors with wireless sensors is to obtain a better insight into the processes inside it. This will be achieved by measuring essential parameters such as, e.g., the temperature, pH value, or gas concentrations of the medium inside the reactor, which for algal cultivation would be water. Due to the passive architecture of the transmitter electronics, there is no need for batteries, and therefore, no temporal limit... [more]

Keywords: Bayesian deep learning, capture uncertainty, electric vehicle charging station, load forecasting, long short-term memory (LSTM) network
In recent years, replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles has been a significant option for supporting reducing carbon emissions because of fossil fuel shortage and environmental contamination. However, the rapid growth of electric vehicles (EVs) can bring new and uncertain load conditions to the electric network. Precise load forecasting for EV charging stations becomes vital to reduce the negative influence on the grid. To this end, a novel day-ahead load forecasting method is proposed to forecast loads of EV charging stations with Bayesian deep learning techniques. The proposed methodological framework applies long short-term memory (LSTM) network combined with Bayesian probability theory to capture uncertainty in forecasting. Based on the actual operational data of the EV charging station collected on the Caltech campus, the experiment results show the superior performance of the proposed method compared with other methods, indicating significant potenti... Keywords: all-sky imagers, forecasting, ramp events, solar irradiance ramp event forecasting
Solar forecasting constitutes a critical tool for operating, producing and storing generated power from solar farms. In the framework of the International Energy Agency’s Photovoltaic Power Systems Program Task 16, the solar irradiance nowcast algorithms, based on five all-sky imagers (ASIs), are used to investigate the feasibility of ASIs to foresee ramp events. ASIs 1−2 and ASIs 3−5 can capture the true ramp events by 26.0−51.0% and 49.0−92.0% of the cases, respectively. ASIs 1−2 provided the lowest (<10.0%) falsely documented ramp events while ASIs 3−5 recorded false ramp events up to 85.0%. On the other hand, ASIs 3−5 revealed the lowest falsely documented no ramp events (8.0−51.0%). ASIs 1−2 are developed to provide spatial solar irradiance forecasts and have been delimited only to a small area for the purposes of this benchmark, which penalizes these approaches. These findings show that ASI-based nowcasts could be considered as a valuable tool for predicting solar irradiance r... [more]

Keywords: auger reactor, electric heating, mathematical modelling, non-stationary temperature field, numerical analysis, shafted helical screw equipment
The non-stationary heat transfer inside a cylindrical channel of a shafted screw conveyor, electrically heated, and filled with a moving biomass was analyzed. The problem of non-stationary heat transport is encountered in the processes of biomass pyrolysis and food products’ sterilization. To solve the heat conduction equation with initial and boundary conditions, the methods of the expansion of the given and unknown functions into a Fourier series in the angular coordinate, and Fourier and Laplace integral transforms in the axial coordinate and time, respectively, were used. As a result of solving this problem, it is shown that the temperature in the reactor consists of two main terms. The first of them is proportional to time, and the second is a superposition of quasi-monochromatic heat pulses decaying with time. Numerical analysis of the temperature distribution in space and time depending on various specific parameters of the system was carried out. The obtained numerical results... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hot dry rock (HDR), temperature field, UNet
Hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal energy, as a clean and renewable energy, has potential value in meeting the rapid demand of the social economy. Predicting the temperature distribution of a subsurface target zone is a fundamental issue for the exploration and evaluation of hot dry rock. Numerical finite−element simulation is currently the mainstream method used to study the variation in underground temperature fields. However, it has difficulty in dealing with multiple geological elements of deep and complex hot dry rock models. A Unity networking for hot dry rock temperature (HDRT−UNet) is proposed in this study that incorporates the matrix rock temperature field equation for relating the three parameters of density, specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity. According to the numerical geological structures and rock parameters of cap rocks, faults and magma intrusions, a new dataset simulated by the finite element method was created for training the HDRT−UNet. The temperature simul... [more]

Keywords: computer programming, dq transformation method, permeance space harmonics, stepping motors
This paper presents a simple mathematical and Simulink model of a two-phase hybrid stepper motor, where ignoring the permeance space harmonics of the hybrid stepper motor is regarded as the main physical assumption in this article. Moreover, the dq transformation method is adopted as the main mathematical approach for the derivation of the proposed model, where simple voltages, currents, and torque equations are obtained and used to build the proposed Simulink and circuit model of the stepper motor. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed model are examined by comparing its results with the results collected from the Simulink model in the library of Matlab. The obtained simulation results showed that the proposed model achieved a high simplicity and high accuracy when compared with conventional models.

Keywords: equivalent circuit, high power electromagnetics, micro-strip, pyramid horn antenna, SPICE model, vector fitting, vector norm, wireless communication system
High power electromagnetics (HPEMs) pose a potential threatening risk to the wireless communication system, especially according to the main coupling path of the RF front-end channel. SPICE modeling of the responses coupled on the RF channel is crucial for the EM risk assessment, which helps us learn more about how the pulse conducts on the RF channel. A simplified linear RF channel with pyramid horn antenna is taken as an example by the selection of the key electronic modules of the actual wireless system. This paper proposes a system-level SPICE circuit model for the simplified RF channel according to the hybrid methods of the antenna electromagnetic simulation and SPICE modeling of the RF circuit. The equivalent circuits of the horn antenna illuminated by HPEMs are established with the Vector Fitting method based on Thevenin and Norton theorems. The short current response as the excitation files for the SPICE models are obtained by the commercial electromagnetic simulation of the ho... [more]

Keywords: anomaly detection, deep learning, high-dimensional energy consumption, time series analysis
With the increase of energy demand, energy wasteful behavior is inevitable. To reduce energy waste, it is crucial to understand users’ electricity consumption habits and detect abnormal usage behavior in a timely manner. This study proposes a high-dimensional energy consumption anomaly detection method based on deep learning. The method uses high-dimensional energy consumption related data to predict users’ electricity consumption in real time and for anomaly detection. The test results of the method on a publicly available dataset show that it can effectively detect abnormal electricity usage behavior of users. Keywords: reservoir numerical simulation, tight sandstone gas reservoirs, water block damage, water block release
Compared with oil, natural gas has been the focus of the energy industry in recent years. Renewable energy is the goal and trend of future developments, and it has made considerable progress; however, it has not reached the ideal popularization rate. Therefore, natural gas is still very important so far. In this paper, the influence of thermal gas injection and room temperature gas injection on gas reservoir recovery is analyzed, and the method of water plugging by hot gas injection in tight gas reservoir is put forward. Indoor simulation experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of hot-gas injection in cut pore water and the degree of water blockage. On this basis, the numerical simulation of removing water blockage by hot-gas injection was carried out. The changes in core temperature and remaining water saturation were discussed by using simulation models. Results of this study can provide a theoretical basis for removing water blockage in actual oil and gas reservoirs.

Keywords: axial piston pump, data-driven method, leakage monitoring, Machine Learning, virtual sensor
The leakage of the tribological contact in axial piston pumps significantly impacts the pump efficiency. Leakage observations can be used to optimize the pump design and monitor the behavior of the tribological contact. However, due to assembly limitations, it is not always feasible to observe the leakage of each tribological contact individually with a flow rate sensor. This work developed a data-driven virtual flow rate sensor for monitoring the leakage of cradle bearings in axial piston pumps under different operating conditions and recess pressures. The performance of neural network, support vector regression, and Gaussian regression methods for developing the virtual flow rate sensor was systematically investigated. In addition, the effect of the number of datasets and label distribution on the performance of the virtual flow sensor were systematically studied. The findings are verified using a data-driven virtual flow rate sensor to observe the leakage. In addition, they show tha... [more]

Keywords: electrical heating, heat transfer characteristics, heavy oil reservoir, preheating, steam-assisted gravity-drainage (SAGD)
It is necessary to establish effective communication between two horizontal wells during the preheating period of steam-assisted gravity-drainage (SAGD). However, the preheating time is usually very long, which results in high steam consumption and CO2 emissions. There is little research on the effects of different wellbore fluids during the preheating period. The heat transfer and heating characteristics of different wellbore fluids−water, heat-conduction oil, and air−were explored by using physical experiments and numerical simulations. In this study, the results indicated that the heat-transfer performance of heat-conduction oil is the best. The numerical simulation’s results indicated that compared with the wellbore saturated with water, the heat-conduction oil reduced the viscosity of crude oil, and energy consumption was not obvious during the preheating stage. The super-heavy oil flowed into the wellbore due to the solubility of the heat-conduction oil and its own gravity. As a... [more]

Keywords: bubble lift-off diameter, force analysis, subcooled boiling flow
Bubble lift-off diameter is characterized as the size of a bubble rising from a wall, which is vital in the boundary condition of heat transfer model and interfacial area transport equation. In this paper, mechanistic force analysis was conducted to explore a predictive model for bubble lift-off diameter in a vertical channel of subcooled boiling flow. Specifically, the component of growth force normal to the wall and the shear lift force lead to the lift-off of a bubble on the vertical surface. Through force analysis, we found that bubble lift-off diameter is arranged to be related to wall superheat, latent heat, liquid velocity, fluid properties, bulk liquid subcooling, etc. To account for the contribution of the influencing factors, the dimensionless bubble lift-off diameter was correlated with dimensionless parameters, including the Prandtl number, the Reynolds number, the Jacob number, and dimensionless subcooling. The proposed correlation was assessed according to experimental da... [more]
