February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analysis of energy consumption, Computational Fluid Dynamics, hydraulic system design, numerical simulation, Simulink, tunable check valve
The article presents a study of the flow through a tunable check valve used as a hydraulic lock in a system with an actuator. Special attention is given to energy losses of the liquid stream in the poppet gap. In the first stage of the research, CFD methods were used to determine the speed and pressure distributions for the fixed values of the input flow rate and the poppet position. The values of the jet angle and pressures determined based on the CFD results were used to build a simulation model of the entire hydraulic system in Matlab/Simulink environment. The influence of the spring parameters pressing the poppet against the valve seat on the pressure drop and thus on the amount of energy lost was investigated. In particular, the spring stiffness and initial tension were studied. The obtained results were used to develop guidelines for constructing a valve prototype. Finally, the results of simulation tests were verified based on the actual valve characteristic obtained on a test b... [more]

With the advantage of integrating distributed energy, storage and DC load with high efficiency, the DC distribution network recently attracted wide attention in the field of nearly zero energy buildings. Considering the large number of buildings and the enormous energy-saving potential, the distribution form and the revenue distribution are key factors affecting energy efficiency and operational economy. Aiming at the characteristics of AC and DC distribution topologies in nearly zero energy buildings, an energy efficiency evaluation method is proposed based on time-sequential power flow simulation, where the piecewise linear efficiency function of converters and dynamic line power loss model are established. Based on a DC distribution demonstration project, an AC power distribution system with the same boundary conditions is designed. The results show that the efficiency of DC distribution topology is about 6% higher than the AC system, while the efficiency advantage in office, hotel,... [more]

Keywords: economic analysis, greenhouse heating, heat pump, pellet boiler, TRNSYS
Although smart farms are considered an alternative to traditional agriculture, they require large amounts of energy and high investment costs, hindering their efficient implementation. In the Republic of Korea, the energy supply is primarily for heating rather than cooling, necessitating the accurate prediction of the greenhouse internal temperature to determine the feasibility of agricultural management while using renewable energy. This study developed a model (TRNSYS) for predicting the internal temperature of a greenhouse using building energy simulation. A greenhouse heating experiment was conducted using a hybrid heating system simulated by TRNSYS to analyze the prediction model. The regression analysis of the experimental and simulation results revealed an R2 and RMSE of 0.8834 and 3.61, respectively. A comparative analysis was conducted with the existing hot air heating system to evaluate the heating performance and economic feasibility of the hybrid system. Overall, the heatin... [more]

Keywords: multi-floater WEC platform, numerical simulation, potential flow theory, Wave Energy
In order to solve the hydrodynamic characteristics of the multi-floater truss-type wave energy convertor (WEC) platform, the mathematical model is established by using the high-order boundary element method based on potential flow theory, in which the floater and the platform are connected by the floating arm based on the lever principle. The mathematical model is applied to study the heave motion response of each floater of the multi-floater truss-type WEC platform, and the effects of the floater number and the floater arrangement on the motion responses of floaters, as well as the power generation of the WEC platform are analyzed. The effect of the hydraulic cylinder on the floater is simulated by linear damping, and then, the work of the hydraulic cylinder is used to generate electricity, so as to achieve the purpose of simulating the multi-floater WEC power generation device. Some useful conclusions are obtained through calculation, which can provide data support for the correspond... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brick roughness, CFD-models, convective heat transfer, lattice setting density, pumping power, tunnel kilns
This paper investigates the combined effect of the kiln or brick surface roughness and the brick lattice setting density on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in tunnel kilns. The flow uniformity, pressure drop, convective heat transfer coefficient (CHTC), and pumping power are studied. A high-density setting (HDS), which comprises 768 bricks, and a low-density setting (LDS), which comprises 512 bricks, are tested for kiln boundaries and brick surface roughness levels of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm. The investigation is conducted using a 3D-CFD model with the k-ω turbulence model. The surface roughness changes from 0 to 4 mm for either kiln walls or bricks while fixing the other. The results show that increasing the tunnel kiln surface roughness from 0 to 4 mm increases the pressure drop of both the HDS and LDS by about 13.5%. It also increases the established CHTC value of the LDS more than the HDS by about 23% for all tested roughness levels. Changing the brick surface roughne... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: degradation, Fuel Cells, HT-PEM, lifetime
In this paper, the performance of a high-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) was modeled using literature data. The paper attempted to combine different sources from the literature to find trends in the degradation mechanisms of HT-PEMFCs. The model focused on the activation and ohmic losses. The activation losses were defined as a function of both Pt agglomeration and loss of catalyst material. The simulations revealed that the loss of electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) was a major contributor to the total voltage loss. The ohmic losses were defined as a function of changes of acid doping level in time. The loss of conductivity increased significantly on a percentage basis over time, but its impact on the overall voltage degradation was fairly low. It was found that the evaporation of phosphoric acid caused the ohmic overpotential to increase, especially at temperatures above 180 °C. Therefore, higher temperatures can lead to shorter lifetimes but inc... [more]

Keywords: anomaly detection, empirical models, Machine Learning, physics models
To facilitate the automated online monitoring of power plants, a systematic and qualitative strategy for anomaly detection is presented. This strategy is essential to provide credible reasoning on why and when an empirical versus hybrid (i.e., physics-supported) approach should be used and to determine the ideal mix of these two approaches for a defined anomaly detection scope. Empirical methods are usually based on pattern, statistical, and causal inference. Hybrid methods include the use of physics models to train and test data methods, reduce data dimensionality, reduce data-model complexity, augment data, and reduce empirical uncertainty; hybrid methods also include the use of data to tune physics models. The presented strategy is driven by key decision points related to data relevance, simple modeling feasibility, data inference, physics-modeling value, data dimensionality, physics knowledge, method of validation, performance, data availability, and suitability for training and te... Keywords: courtyard, Energy Efficiency, residential buildings, Saudi Arabia, Simulation
The aim of this research is to develop an architectural style commensurate with the requirements of residential buildings in the hot and dry climate of Najran. The courtyard concept is one of the most important passive design strategies most in tune with the desert climate. The courtyard concept also meets the sociocultural requirements of the region. The success of this strategy can be verified by selecting a typical residential unit (villa) and assessing its indoor environmental conditions and energy performance. The villa can then be redesigned with the same functional and spatial determinants while creating a courtyard at the heart of the new villa configuration. To determine the level of improvement resulting from the proposed solution, the energy consumption per square meter is measured, and the results are compared with the DesignBuilder simulation program. The results indicate that with the proposed design focused mainly on the courtyard and some passive design strategies, the... [more]

Keywords: air heat pump, Computational Fluid Dynamics, finned heat exchanger, friction factor, individual correlations, Nusselt number
Currently, when designing finned heat exchangers (FHE), the average value of the entire heat transfer coefficient (HTC) is considered. However, each row of the heat exchanger (HEX) has different hydraulic-thermal characteristics. The novelty of this research is to present the differentiation of the individual air-side Nusselt number and Darcy-Weisbach friction factor correlations in each row of FHE using CFD modelling. FHE has four-rows, circular tubes, and continuous fins with a staggered tube arrangement. Relationships for the Nusselt number and D-W friction factor derived for the entire exchanger based on CFD modelling were compared with those available in the literature, determined using experimental data. The maximum relative differences between the Nusselt number for a four-row FHE determined experimentally and by CFD modelling are in the range from 22% for a Reynolds number based on a tube outside diameter of 1000 to 30% for a Reynolds number of 13,000. The maximum relative diff... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, dynamic stall, pitch oscillating airfoil, unsteady aerodynamics
In this paper, a thorough 2D unsteady computational fluid dynamic analysis was performed on a pitching airfoil to properly comprehend the dynamic stall and aerodynamic forces. The computational software ANSYS Fluent was used to solve the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes equations. Low Reynolds number flows were modeled using the k-ω shear stress transport turbulence model. Aerodynamic forces, fluid flow structures, and flow separation delay angles were explored as a function of the Reynolds number, reduced frequency, oscillation amplitude, and mean angle of attack. The maximum aerodynamic forces, including lift, drag, and the onset of the dynamic stall, were all influenced by these variables. The critical parameters that influenced the optimum aerodynamic forces and ended up causing dynamic stall delay were oscillation amplitude and mean angle of attack. The stall angle was raised by 9° and 6°, respectively, and a large increment in the lift coefficient was also noted in both c... [more]

Keywords: co-injection, hydrochar, numerical simulation, the interaction mechanism
In this paper, the combustion behavior of low rank coal and its product after hydrothermal carbonization with paper sludge hydrochar were studied. The Raman technique was used to compare the structural differences between raw coal and the product. Thermogravimetric analysis was employed to conduct experiments of single sample and their mixtures with different proportions at a heating rate of 20 °C/min, the activation energy of chemical reactions was calculated. The results showed that upgraded product had higher carbon ordering degree than raw coal and the ignition temperature and burnout temperature of the product were advanced. Compared with raw coal, the combustion characteristic parameters C and S of the product were higher, indicating that its combustibility was better. As for the mixture, when the paper sludge hydrochar ratio was not more than 10%, the mixed fuel combustion curve was still similar to coal curve. After the paper sludge hydrochar ratio exceeded 10%, the activation... [more]

Keywords: bivalent heat pump, building simulation, decarbonization, field test, hybrid heat pump
Unrenovated multifamily houses in Germany are mostly heated by fossil heat generators; therefore, measures are required for CO2 emission reduction. The use of air−water heat pumps is restricted by high required flow temperatures and heat output but can be mitigated by hybrid heat pumps. To limit additional operation costs by the heat pump, a new operation strategy is introduced in this study, which allows to maintain a target CO2 emission. The operation strategy is applied in a field trial in a small unrenovated multifamily house built in 1964. A thermohydraulic simulation model is verified and is used in full-year simulations to apply improvement measures and compare the new control strategy with existing optimizing strategies. The results show that the control onto target emissions is possible and limits additional costs but can also result in higher CO2 mitigation costs, making it less favorable. The hybrid heat pump reduces the direct fossil CO2 emissions by 61% (in total by 22%);... [more]

Keywords: carbonate cavern reservoir application, model, pre-stack inversion
Although pre-stack inversion has been carried out on reservoir prediction, few studies have focused on the application of pre-stack for seismic inversion in fractured-cavity carbonate reservoirs. In carbonate rock, complicated combinations and fluid predictions in karst caves are remain unclear. Post-stack methods are commonly used to predict the position, size, and fillings of caves, but pre-stack inversion is seldom applied in carbonate karst reservoirs. This paper proposes a pre-stack inversion method for forward modeling data and oil survey seismic data, using both points to indicate the application of pre-stack inversion in karst caves. Considering influence of cave size, depth, and filler on prediction, three sets of models (different caves volume; different fillings velocity of caves; complicated combination of caves) are employed and inverted by pre-stack inversion. We analyze the pre-stack results to depict Ordovician oil bearing and characterize caves. Geological model parame... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: numerical simulation, porous media, thermoelectricity, waste heat recovery
This paper presents a numerical study of waste heat recovery from a fluid stream using thermoelectric devices. The system consisted of a square section duct with spherical porous media placed in its central region. Hot air circulates continuously through the duct and exchanges energy with the solid matrix and subsequently with the thermoelectric modules. The mathematical model of the system was solved using ANSYS/FLUENT software, requiring the implementation of user-defined functions (UDFs) and user-defined scalars (UDS) regarding porous media and thermoelectric generation modelling. From the simulations carried out, global efficiency and electrical power values were obtained in the range of [0.11−4.51] [%] and [0.01−12.77] [W], respectively. Furthermore, for the set of variables analysed, it was observed that the performance of the system is favoured by an increase in the fluid inlet temperature and speed, as well as by a higher external heat transfer coefficient.

Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), E-Machines, multi phase analysis, phase change materials (PCM), ribs
The cooling of E-machines was investigated using phase change material (PCM). The PCM is widely used in the cooling of electronic components because of its heat-absorbing and cooling properties. In this study, PCM OM35 (50:50) and OM35 (60:40) were used for the cooling of E-Machines, which are commonly known as electric vehicle motors. Three different configurations, viz. no rib, two ribs, and four ribs, were studied to understand the impact of thermal behaviour on bracket cooling. The ribs were added in between the brackets to enhance the heat transfer. Numerical simulations were performed using the volume of fluid multiphase analysis approach to model the behaviour of phase change inside the brackets for 18 KW E-Machines. Based on the study, a four rib configuration showed good performance compared to no rib and two rib configurations, and heat transfer improved by 6%. Heat transfer is thus improved by increasing the number of ribs placed between the brackets. The cyclic heat load wa... [more]

Keywords: dissimilar metals, FEA, LFW, thermal simulation
Linear Friction Welding (LFW) is a unique welding process which enables dissimilar materials to be welded without filler material. In this study, bi-metallic Ti-64-CCM joints were manufactured utilizing LFW and subsequently analyzed. A coupled thermal-deformation model was created to accurately model both thermal and deformation profiles along the weld interface. Ti-64 and CCM stock were machined in accordance with ASTM standards for tensile testing. Temperature distribution of the two material surfaces were measured using an IR camera. Tensile testing was then performed to analyze weldability and bonding strength. A transient decoupled thermomechanical simulation model was generated to simulate the LFW process. The simulation model produced results within 5% error of both experimental results. The tensile testing results indicate that successful bonding of Ti-64 to CCM is possible for an oscillation amplitude of 2 mm under large forging pressure. The results also show that parameter o... The main objective of this study was to conduct multi-stage and multi-variant prognostic research to assess the impact of e-mobility development on the Polish power system for the period 2022−2027. The research steps were as follows: forecast the number of electric vehicles (using seven methods), forecast annual power demand arising solely out of the operation of the forecast number of electric vehicles, forecast annual power demand with and without the impact of e-mobility growth (using six methods), forecast daily profiles of typical days with and without the impact of e-mobility growth (using three methods). For the purpose of this research, we developed a unique Growth Dynamics Model to forecast the number of electric vehicles in Poland. The application of Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) to the extrapolation of non-linear functions (to the forecast number of electric vehicles and forecast annual power demand without the impact of e-mobility growth) is our original, unique proposal to... Keywords: competitive propagation, conglomerate reservoirs, flow distribution, multi-fracture, numerical simulation
Mahu oilfield is a typical tight gravel oil reservoir. At present, long-stage multi-cluster fracturing is widely used for reservoir stimulation, and multiple-clusters treatment is realized through cluster perforation. Field monitoring indicates that not all perforation clusters produce hydraulic fractures in the fracturing process, and each cluster of hydraulic fractures in the section will expand unevenly. The unbalanced expansion of multiple clusters of fractures in the section seriously affects the effect of reservoir reconstruction of horizontal wells. Aiming at the long-stage multi-cluster fracturing of horizontal wells, a multi-fracture propagation calculation model considering wellbore flow, performance friction, different fracture criteria at the tip, and the interaction stress among multiple fractures is established in this paper. In order to improve the calculation efficiency, an explicit Runge Kutta Legendre algorithm is proposed to solve the structural mesh, and the solutio... [more]

Keywords: asymmetric pulsating flow, Computational Fluid Dynamics, enhancement of heat transfer, in-line tube bundle
The pulsating flow is one of the techniques that can enhance heat transfer, therefore leading to energy saving in tubular heat exchangers. This paper investigated the heat transfer and flow characteristics in a two-dimensional in-line tube bundle with the pulsating flow by a numerical method using the Ansys Fluent. Numerical simulation was performed for the Reynolds number Re = 500 with different frequencies and amplitude of pulsation. Heat transfer enhancement was estimated from the central tube of the tube bundle. Pulsation velocity had an asymmetrical character with a reciprocating flow. The technique developed by the authors to obtain asymmetric pulsations was used. This technique allows simulating an asymmetric flow in heat exchangers equipped with a pulsation generation system. Increase in both the amplitude and the frequency of the pulsations had a significant effect on the heat transfer enhancement. Heat transfer enhancement is mainly observed in the front and back of the cylin... [more]
