Evaluation of the Transient Overvoltages of HVDC Transmission Lines Caused by Lightning Strikes
Amr S. Zalhaf, Ensheng Zhao, Yang Han, Ping Yang, Abdulrazak H. Almaliki, Reda M. H. Aly.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: back-flashover, DC towers, HVDC transmission, lightning overvoltages, lightning strikes, shielding failure, transient analysis.
High-voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems are considered an outstanding solution due to high electrical losses emerging from long-distance transmission. However, HVDC transmission lines (TLs) are vulnerable to lightning strikes. In this work, the Yunnan-Guizhou 500 kV HVDC transmission system is used as a case study to evaluate the impact of lightning strikes on DC-TL overvoltages, as no research studies have been conducted to assess the lightning transient behavior of DC-TLs. A comprehensive investigation of the 500 kV DC-TL transient performance during lightning strikes is performed, taking into account different technical aspects that have not been studied in detail by previous researchers. Additionally, analysis of the back-flashover phenomenon has not been conducted well in previous work, and results on the effect of changing the lightning strike current peak and tower grounding resistance on shielding-failure flashover are quite limited. The distributed-parameter mo... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deflector optimization, numerical simulation, optimizing design, selective catalytic reduction, zonal ammonia spraying.
Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and denitrification are the best technologies for nitrogen oxides (NOx) control in coal-fired power plants, and their denitration efficiency and ammonia escape rate are closely related to their internal flow characteristics. By adding a deflector to the SCR device, the flow field in the curve can be effectively improved, and the stable and efficient operation of the SCR device can be realized. Based on the numerical simulation method, the SCR system of a coking coal-fired boiler in a steel plant was simulated using k-ε (the turbulence model), and three design schemes of deflectors were proposed and numerically simulated simultaneously. After optimization, the ammonia injection grid’s downstream velocity variance coefficient CV was 6.69, the catalyst upper cross-section velocity variance coefficient was 11.84, the cross-sectional temperature average was 499 K, the maximum temperature deviation was 9 °C, the maximum-to-minimum temperature interval span... Keywords: cavitation, electrical energy, heat energy, mathematical model, terminal velocity, translational−rotational motion of a flow, vortex heat generator.
The paper presents the results of analytical and experimental studies of the hydrodynamics of the translational−rotational motion of incompressible gas flow within a working space of a variable-geometry vortex heat generator. The terminal velocity and pressure have been identified analytically. The effect of vortex generation on the ratio of the parameters has been analyzed. A mathematical model has been developed with a simplified design scheme that simulates the movement inside a vortex channel with fixed elements. On the basis of mathematical modelling, the influence of the apparatus-constructive (AC) design of the working space of a vortex heat generator on the generation of vortices inside the apparatus has been analyzed. The influence of the main geometric and hydrodynamic parameters of the device on the indicators of its energy efficiency has been investigated. The obtained models show the critical regions where the most intense cavitation zones are possible. An analysis of the... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANSYS, fluid flow, heat exchange plate, heat transfer coefficient, hydrodynamics, Modelling.
This article presents the possibility of evaluating the efficiency of the heat exchange element with a special stamping plate, which is based on the results of computer simulation. The method is based on a comparative analysis of convective heat transfer models implemented in ANSYS using a k-ε turbulence model. To conduct the study, 3D models of three different types of cavity geometry formed between two heat exchange plates (flat plate, chevron plate, and plate with conical stampings) were built. Simulation was performed by finite element analysis in ANSYS for channels formed by the three types of plates, one of which is a new configuration. The results of hydrodynamic and heat exchange parameters allowed for establishing the efficiency of convective heat exchange for plates of known structures and to compare them with the proposed one. It was found that the plates with conical stamping form the smallest channels through which the fluid moves. The velocity of the coolant is uniform th... [more]

Ziming Xu, Jun Xu, Zhechen Guo, Haitao Wang, Zheng Sun, Xuesong Mei.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery thermal management, digital twin, Gaussian process regression, microchannel structure.
In order to avoid high-temperature and large rate discharge impact on the performance of battery modules, a microchannel liquid cooling battery thermal management system (BTMS) and BTMS virtual model of the microchannel structure based on digital twin (DT) is proposed. On the basis of accurate virtual simulation model, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model and the Gaussian process regression algorithm were combined to drive the optimization process in order to improve the cooling capacity of the system. The results show that the microchannel plates can greatly enhance the cooling capacity of the direct cooling system and effectively improve the uniformity of the coolant. The width of the microchannel plates and the side spacing actually represent the amount of coolant flowing through the inside and outside of the battery module, which significantly impacts the maximum temperature and maximum temperature difference. Increasing the coolant flow can only effectively improve the coo... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D geomechanical model, caprock, finite element method, Smeaheia, tensile failure.
Injection-induced rock mechanical failure risks are critical in CO2 sequestration, and thus there is a need to evaluate these occurrences to ensure safe and reliable subsurface storage. A stress−strain-based numerical simulation can reveal the potential mechanical risks of any CO2 sites. This study investigated the hydromechanical effect on geomechanical failure due to injection-induced stress and pore pressure changes in the prospective CO2 storage site Smeaheia, offshore Norway. An inverted-seismic-property-driven 3D field-scale geomechanical model was carried out in the Smeaheia area to evaluate the rock failure and deformation risks in various pressure-build-up scenarios. A one-way coupling between the before- and after-injection pressure scenarios of nine different models has been iterated using the finite element method. The effect of the sensitivity of total pore volume and pore compressibility on rock mechanical deformation is also evaluated. Although various models illustrated... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annual simulation, CO2 emissions, hybrid power system, micro-CHP system, power to gas, residential energy systems, SOFC.
Renewable energy sources based on solar and wind energy provide clean and efficient energy. The intermittent behaviour of these sources is challenging. At the same time, the needs for efficient, continuous and clean energy sources are increased for serving both electricity and thermal demands for residential buildings. Consequently, complimentary systems are essential in order to ensure a continuous power generation. One of the promising energy sources that helps in reducing CO2 emissions, in addition to providing electrical and thermal energy efficiently, is a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system operated in a combined heat and power (CHP) mode, due to high electrical efficiencies (in full and part load) and the fuel flexibility. Currently, most studies tend to focus on fuel cell model details with basic information about the building’s energy requirements. Nevertheless, a deep understanding of integrating fuel cell micro-CHP systems with renewable energy systems for the residential se... [more]
Thermal Draft Load Coefficient for Heating Load Differences Caused by Stack-Driven Infiltration by Floor in Multifamily High-Rise Buildings
Juhyun Bak, Jabeom Koo, Sungmin Yoon, Hyunwoo Lim.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heating load, infiltration, multifamily high-rise buildings, stack effect, thermal draft load coefficient.
The stack effect is dominant in multifamily high-rise buildings (MFHRBs) in winter because of the considerable height of MFHRBs, which causes a difference in the infiltration amount between floors. This difference causes a heating load difference between floors in a MFHRB. However, there are no indicators to quantify the heating load differences in previous studies. In this article, an indicator—the thermal draft load coefficient (TDLC)—is proposed that can be used to estimate and evaluate the differences between floors in a MFHRB. The TDLC is built on a theoretical model of the stack effect and leakage area of the airflow paths, considering the entire building airflow in a MFHRB. The theoretical model was validated by comparison with a simulation model. The winter average coefficient of variation of the root mean square error and the normalized mean bias error of the theoretical model were acceptable (17.1% and 9.3%, respectively). The TDLC resulted in a maximum of 2.5 and a minimum o... [more]
Estimation of Grid Reinforcement Costs Triggered by Future Grid Customers: Influence of the Quantification Method (Scaling vs. Large-Scale Simulation) and Coincidence Factors (Single vs. Multiple Application)
Bernd Thormann, Thomas Kienberger.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution power networks, electric vehicle, grid reinforcement, grid simulation, heat pump, photovoltaic.
The integration of future grid customers, e.g., electric vehicles, heat pumps, or photovoltaic modules, will challenge existing low-voltage power grids in the upcoming years. Hence, distribution system operators must quantify future grid reinforcement measures and resulting costs early. On this account, this work initially evaluates different methods to quantify future grid reinforcement needs, applied by the current state of research. Thereby, it indicates the significance of large-scale grid simulations, i.e., simulating several thousand low-voltage grids, to quantify grid reinforcements accurately. Otherwise, a selected area’s total grid reinforcement costs might be misjudged significantly. Due to its fast application, deterministic grid simulations based on coincidence factors are most commonly used in the current state of research to simulate several thousand grids. Hence, in the second step, recent studies’ approaches to applying grid customers’ coincidence factors are evaluated:... [more]

Liang Feng, Huafeng Zhu, Ying Song, Wenchen Cao, Ziyuan Li, Wenlong Jia.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: large elevation difference pipe, oil transmission pipeline, Simulation, two-phase flow.
Oil pipeline construction and operation in mountainous areas have increased in southwestern China, with oil consumption increasing. Such liquid pipelines laid in mountainous areas continuously undulate along the terrain, resulting in many large elevation difference pipe segments. Serious gas block problems often occur during the commissioning process of these pipelines due to the gas/air accumulation at the high point of the pipe, which causes pipeline overpressure and vibration, and even safety accidents such as bursting pipes. To solve this problem, the gas−liquid replacement model and its numerical solution are established with consideration of the initial gas accumulation formation and the gas segment compression processes in a U-shaped pipe during the initial start-up operation. Additionally, considering the interactions of the gas-phase transfer in the continuous U-shaped pipe, and the influence of the length, inclination angle, and backpressure on the air vent process, the gas m... Jianmeng Sun, Ping Feng, Peng Chi, Weichao Yan.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: numerical simulation, pore structure, resistivity, saturation, tight sandstone.
Core samples of the tight sandstone reservoir in the Bonan Oilfield were analyzed by using multiple petrophysical experimental techniques, then a multi-scale three-dimensional digital rock model was constructed. The pore structure parameters of tight sandstone and homogeneous Berea sandstone were compared. The electrical simulation method based on the digital rock model was utilized to quantitatively reveal the influence of five micro-pore structure parameters (pore size, throat size, pore-throat size, coordination number, and shape factor) on the rock’s electrical properties. In addition, the saturation of tight sandstone reservoirs was evaluated in combination with the three-component automatic mixed-connection conductivity model. The results show that the “non-Archie” phenomenon in sandstone is obvious, which is mainly caused by the small radius of the maximum connected pore throat and the complex structure of the pore throat. We noted that: with an increase in pore radius, throat r... [more]
Modeling and Design of High-Power Enhanced Leakage-Inductance-Integrated Medium-Frequency Transformers for DAB Converters
Xinsheng Zhang, Fei Xiao, Ruitian Wang, Wei Kang, Beichao Yang.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DAB converter, inductor integration, medium-frequency transformer, optimal design.
For dual active bridge (DAB) converters, integrating the phase-shifting inductance (PSI) in the medium-frequency transformer (MFT) is an effective way to improve the overall power density. Different from the existing leakage-inductance-integrated (LII) structure, a concentric-winding (CW) enhanced leakage-inductance-integrated (ELII) structure, which includes an additional core, is proposed in this paper. In order to explain the operating mode of CW ELII MFT, a magnetic circuit model is established, and the analysis is carried out under the typical DAB excitation. The total leakage inductance of CW ELII MFT is divided into the winding leakage inductance and the additional leakage inductance for calculation. The integrated structure makes the heat dissipation of the MFT challenging. Therefore, the air−water combined cooling method is adopted in the design. A thermal resistance model is built for the winding air channel under forced convection. On this basis, MFT designs with different i... [more]

Meifang Wei, Youyue Deng, Min Long, Yahui Wang, Yong Li.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy transaction, multi-energy microgrid, smart contract, Stackelberg game.
To improve the coordination and complementarity of multiple energy sources, balancing the interests of different participants in a multi-energy system is of great importance. However, traditional centralized optimization can hardly reflect the game relationship between supply side and demand sides. A trading model based on the Stackelberg game model is proposed in this paper to balance the interests of the supply side and demand side and reduce the carbon emissions. First of all, the process of trading between the supply side and demand side based on smart contracts is described. A contractual consensus is obtained through an internal game, and the transaction is completed automatically. Secondly, a bilevel optimization model is established to coordinate the benefits of both parties based on the Stackelberg game model. The energy operator acts as a leader, and considers the two objectives, i.e., maximizing net income and minimizing carbon emissions, and uses the linear weighting method... [more]

Keywords: aeroacoustics, axial fan, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fan noise, sensitivity, URANS.
The noise generated by different types of fans used in the turbomachinery industry is a topic that has been studied for many years. However, researchers are still looking for a universal solution to reduce noise while maintaining the performance of these machines. This paper, as a contribution to the research, presents the results of numerical investigations of an axial fan installed in a pipeline with a circular cross-section. Giorgio Previati, Giampiero Mastinu, Massimiliano Gobbi.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrified vehicle, thermal management, thermal modeling, thermal optimization.
Vehicle electrification demands a deep analysis of the thermal problems in order to increase vehicle efficiency and battery life and performance. An efficient thermal management of an electrified vehicle has to involve every system of the vehicle. However, it is not sufficient to optimize the thermal behavior of each subsystem, but thermal management has to be considered at system level to optimize the global performance of the vehicle. The present paper provides an organic review of the current aspects of thermal management from a system engineering perspective. Starting from the definition of the requirements and targets of the thermal management system, each vehicle subsystem is analyzed and related to the whole system. In this framework, problems referring to modeling, simulation and optimization are considered and discussed. The current technological challenges and developments in thermal management are highlighted at vehicle and component levels.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ensemble prediction system, Machine Learning, numerical weather prediction, quantile regression, solar power forecast, support vector regression.
Although the recent development of solar power forecasting through machine learning approaches, such as the machine learning models based on numerical weather prediction (NWP) data, has been remarkable, their extreme error requires an increase in the amount of reserve capacity procurement used for the power system safety. Hence, a reduction of the serious overestimation is necessary for efficient grid operation. However, despite the importance of the above issue, few studies have focused on the model design, suppressing serious errors, to the best of the authors’ knowledge. This study investigates a prediction model that can reduce the huge overestimation of the solar irradiance, which poses a risk to the power system. The specific approaches used are as follows: the employment of Support Vector Quantile Regression (SVQR), the utilization of Meso-scale Ensemble Prediction System (MEPS, Meso-scale EPS for the regions of Japan) data, which is based on the forecasts from Meso-scale Model... Learning-Aided Optimal Power Flow Based Fast Total Transfer Capability Calculation
Ji’ang Liu, Youbo Liu, Gao Qiu, Xiao Shao.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep learning, interior point method, surrogate assisted method, total transfer capability, transient stability.
Total transfer capability (TTC) is a vital security indicator for power exchange among areas. It characterizes time-variants and transient stability dynamics, and thus is challenging to evaluate efficiently, which can jeopardize operational safety. A leaning-aided optimal power flow method is proposed to handle the above challenges. At the outset, deep learning (DL) is utilized to globally establish real-time transient stability estimators in parametric space, such that the dimensionality of dynamic simulators can be reduced. The computationally intensive transient stability constraints in TTC calculation and their sensitivities are therewith converted into fast forward and backward processes. The DL-aided constrained model is finally solved by nonlinear programming. The numerical results on the modified IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms several model-based methods in accuracy and efficiency.

Keywords: crystalline rock, discrete fracture network, faulted basement, flow properties, fracture network properties, geothermal reservoirs, heat storage reservoirs, structural analogues, Upper Rhine Graben.
Fracture network is a crucial element to address in any model of the thermo-hydro-mechanical behaviour of a reservoir rock. This study aims to provide quantified datasets and a further understanding of the critical parameters of the fracture network pattern in crystalline rocks. In the Northern Upper Rhine Graben, such rock units are targeted for multiple energy applications, from deep geothermal heat extraction to heat storage. Eleven outcrops were investigated with a combined LiDAR and 2D profiles analysis to extract faults and fracture network geometrical parameters, including length distribution, orientation, connectivity, and topology. These properties are used to decipher the structural architecture and estimate the flow properties of crystalline units. Fracture networks show a multi-scale power-law behaviour for length distribution. Fracture topology and orientation are mainly driven by both fault networks and lithology. Fracture apertures and permeability tensors were then calc... [more]

Zhongliang Meng, Yun Chen, Shizhen Li.
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AQWA simulation, heave plate, model test, Wave Energy.
The development and utilization of wave energy is inseparable from the wave energy converter, and its stability is an important condition for operation. Heave is the biggest factor affecting the stable power generation of wave energy converters. The key method to solve this problem is to install a suitable heave plate. Therefore, the design of the heave plate is particularly important. Based on a new type of horizontal rotor wave energy converter, this paper proposes three different shapes of heave plate design schemes and completes the calculation and modeling of the engineering prototype. First, the three types of heave plate devices were numerically simulated using hydrodynamic calculation software to compare their stable performances and verify the feasibility of the scheme. Subsequently, an experimental model was made according to the parameters of the engineering prototype, and a tank experiment was carried out under the same working conditions to further study the influence of t... Keywords: building energy saving solutions, building energy simulation, Machine Learning, optimisation algorithms.
Accurate prediction of building energy need plays a fundamental role in building design, despite the high computational cost to search for optimal energy saving solutions. An important advancement in the reduction of computational time could come from the application of machine learning models to circumvent energy simulations. With the goal of drastically limiting the number of simulations, in this paper we investigate the regression performance of different machine learning models, i.e., Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, and Extreme Gradient Boosting, trained on a small data-set of energy simulations performed on a case study building. Among the XX algorithms, the tree-based Extreme Gradient Boosting showed the best performance. Overall, we find that machine learning methods offer efficient and interpretable solutions, that could help academics and professionals in shaping better design strategies, informed by feature importance.
A Closed Form Selected Mapping Algorithm for PAPR Reduction in OFDM Multicarrier Transmission

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical solution, peak-to-average-power ratio, power lines communication, selected mapping.
Nowadays, the demand for communication multi-carriers’ channels, where the sub-channels are made mutually independent by using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), is widespread both for wireless and wired communication systems. Even if OFDM is a spectrally efficient modulation scheme, due to the allowed number of subcarriers, high data rate, and good coverage, the transmitted signal can present high peak values in the time domain, due to inverse fast Fourier transform operations. This gives rise to high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) with respect to single carrier systems. These peaks can saturate the transmitting amplifiers, modifying the shape of the OFDM symbol and affecting its information content, and they give rise to electromagnetic compatibility issues for the surrounding electric devices. In this paper, a closed form PAPR reduction algorithm is proposed, which belongs to selected mapping (SLM) methods. These methods consist in shifting the phases of the comp... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bidirectional fluid-structure interaction, computational fluid dynamic, high-speed supercavitating projectiles, motion characteristics, structural response effect, tail-slap motion.
High-speed supercavitating projectiles receive tremendous hydrodynamic force when flying underwater in tail-slap mode, and have obvious structural deformation and structural vibration. To study the motion characteristics of high-speed supercavitating projectiles, a bidirectional fluid-structure interaction model was established, and validated by comparing with the existing results. The motion, supercavitation flow field, and structural deformation response process of a supercavitating projectile were numerically investigated under the conditions of initial speed within 800−1600 m/s. It was found that the tail-slap motion of high-speed supercavitating projectiles is correlated with a high-frequency structural vibration. Further, the amplitude of the structural vibration increases with the initial speed. When flying with an initial speed higher than 1200 m/s, supercavitating projectiles encounter a great structural deformation under the action of the huge hydrodynamic load, which exerts... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic mesh, hydrodynamic performance, shut-off condition, slanted axial-flow pump, sluice gate.
Increasing extreme rainfall events caused by global climate change have had a significant impact on urban drainage systems. As a critical component of a pumping station, a large-scale slanted axial-flow pump (SAFP) featuring high specific speed plays a critical role in mitigating urban flooding and waterlogging. In this study, to reveal the transient characteristics of a SAFP at shut-off conditions, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based approach with dynamic mesh was proposed. Multiple shut-off conditions with various shut-down speeds of the sluice gate (SG) were modeled. Our analysis demonstrated that both the shut-off conditions and the slanted structure have conspicuous impacts on the hydrodynamic performance of a SAFP. Reducing the shut-down speed leads to a greater reverse flow rate and higher runner speed. The water hammer effect was simulated with different shut-down speeds, increasing the water head by 5.07−10.42 m, the axial force by 163.46−297.06 kN∙m, and the axial mome... [more]

Keywords: DDPM-KTGF, erosion modelling, erosion reduction, gas–solid two-phase flow, Rosin–Rammler distribution.
The purpose of the present study is to simulate the continuous bend erosion process in different directions, using the dense discrete particle model (DDPM). The influence of the length of the straight pipe in the middle of the continuous bend is investigated. The Rosin−Rammler method is introduced to define the diameter distribution of erosion particles, which is theoretically closer to the actual engineering erosion situation. The numerical model is based on the Euler−Lagrange method, in which the continuous phase and the particle phase are established on a fixed Euler grid. The Lagrange model is used to track the particles, and the interaction between particles is simulated by particle flow mechanics theory. The velocity field distribution, pressure variation, and turbulent kinetic energy of gas−solid two-phase flow, composed of natural gas and gravel in the pipeline, are studied. The simulation results, using the one-way coupled DPM and the four-way coupled DDPM, are compared and an... [more]
