Self-Learning Pipeline for Low-Energy Resource-Constrained Devices
Fouad Sakr, Riccardo Berta, Joseph Doyle, Alessandro De Gloria, Francesco Bellotti
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: autonomous systems, decision tree, edge computing, k-NN, Machine Learning, on-device training, resource-constrained devices, self-learning, STM32 NUCLEO
The trend of bringing machine learning (ML) to the Internet of Things (IoT) field devices is becoming ever more relevant, also reducing the overall energy need of the applications. ML models are usually trained in the cloud and then deployed on edge devices. Most IoT devices generate large amounts of unlabeled data, which are expensive and challenging to annotate. This paper introduces the self-learning autonomous edge learning and inferencing pipeline (AEP), deployable in a resource-constrained embedded system, which can be used for unsupervised local training and classification. AEP uses two complementary approaches: pseudo-label generation with a confidence measure using k-means clustering and periodic training of one of the supported classifiers, namely decision tree (DT) and k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), exploiting the pseudo-labels. We tested the proposed system on two IoT datasets. The AEP, running on the STM NUCLEO-H743ZI2 microcontroller, achieves comparable accuracy levels as sa... [more]

Keywords: ammonia, chemiluminescence, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Hydrogen, methane, radicals
Recent studies have demonstrated that ammonia is an emerging energy vector for the distribution of hydrogen from stranded sources. However, there are still many unknown parameters that need to be understood before ammonia can be a substantial substitute in fuelling current power generation systems. Therefore, current attempts have mainly utilised ammonia as a substitute for natural gas (mainly composed of methane) to mitigate the carbon footprint of the latter. Co-firing of ammonia/methane is likely to occur in the transition of replacing carbonaceous fuels with zero-carbo options. Hence, a better understanding of the combustion performance, flame features, and radical formation of ammonia/methane blends is required to address the challenges that these fuel combinations will bring. This study involves an experimental approach in combination with numerical modelling to elucidate the changes in radical formation across ammonia/methane flames at various concentrations. Radicals such as OH... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aerodynamics, delta-wing CFD, landing aerodynamics, SST vehicle, supersonic aircraft, vortex-lift
Supersonic flight for commercial aviation is gaining a renewed interest, especially for business aviation, which demands the reduction of flight times for transcontinental routes. So far, the promise of civil supersonic flight has only been afforded by the Concorde and Tupolev T-144 aircraft. However, little or nothing can be found about the aerodynamics of these aeroshapes, the knowledge of which is extremely interesting to obtain before the development of the next-generation high-speed aircraft. Therefore, the present research effort aimed at filling in the lack of data on a Concorde-like aeroshape by focusing on evaluating the aerodynamics of a complete aircraft configuration under low-speed conditions, close to those of the approach and landing phase. In this framework, the present paper focuses on the CFD study of the longitudinal aerodynamics of a Concorde-like, tailless, delta-ogee wing seamlessly integrated onto a Sears−Haack body fuselage, suitable for civil transportation. March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, DPM, elbow erosion, tee pipe, two-phase flow
Erosion caused by solid particles in a pipeline is one of the main problems endangering the safety production of the oil and gas industry, which may lead the equipment to malfunction or even fail. However, most of the previous studies focused on the standard elbow, and the erosion law of right-angle elbow and blind tee is rarely reported in the literature. This work aims to investigate the erosion law of different pipeline structures including 90° elbow, right-angle pipe, and tee pipe based on the production characteristics and engineering parameters of the gas field. An integrated CFD-DPM method is established including a realizable k-ε turbulence model, discrete phase model, and erosion rate prediction model. The accuracy of the model is evaluated by a series of experimental data of flow conditions of our previous work. Further, the erosion rate, pressure distributions, and particle trajectories in 90° elbow, right-angle pipe, and tee pipe under different flow velocities, particle ma... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Aspen Plus, biocrude, critical diameter, hydrothermal liquefaction
Hydrothermal liquefaction can directly and efficiently convert wet biomass into biocrude with a high heating value. We developed a continuous hydrothermal liquefaction model via Aspen Plus to explore the effects of moisture content of Chlorella, reaction pressure and temperature on thermodynamic equilibrium yields, and energy recoveries of biocrude. We also compared the simulated biocrude yield and energy recoveries with experiment values in literature. Furthermore, vertical and horizontal transportation characteristics of insoluble solids in Chlorella were analyzed to determine the critical diameters that could avoid the plugging of the reactor at different flow rates. The results showed that the optimum moisture content, reaction pressure, and reaction temperature were 70−90 wt%, 20 MPa, and 250−350 °C, respectively. At a thermodynamic equilibrium state, the yield and the energy recovery of biocrude could be higher than 56 wt% and 96%, respectively. When the capacity of the hydrother... [more]

Keywords: adaptive capability, customized loss function, deep learning, Remedial Action Scheme (RAS), security margin
The Remedial Action Scheme (RAS) is designed to take corrective actions after detecting predetermined conditions to maintain system transient stability in large interconnected power grids. However, since RAS is usually designed based on a few selected typical operating conditions, it is not optimal in operating conditions that are not considered in the offline design, especially under frequently and dramatically varying operating conditions due to the increasing integration of intermittent renewables. The deep learning-based RAS is proposed to enhance the adaptivity of RAS to varying operating conditions. During the training, a customized loss function is developed to penalize the negative loss and suggest corrective actions with a security margin to avoid triggering under-frequency and over-frequency relays. Simulation results of the reduced United States Western Interconnection system model demonstrate that the proposed deep learning−based RAS can provide optimal corrective actions f... [more]

Keywords: electrodynamic suspension (EDS), Halbach array, magnetic levitation, magnetic levitation trains (maglev), permanent magnet span
In high-speed magnetic railways, it is necessary to create the forces that lift the train. This effect is achieved by using active (EMS) or passive (EDS) magnetic systems. In a passive system, suspension systems with permanent magnets arranged in a Halbach array can be used. In this paper, an original Halbach array with various alternately arranged horizontally and vertically magnetized magnets is proposed. Correctly selected geometry allows us to obtain higher values of levitation forces and lower braking forces in relation to a system with identical horizontally and vertically magnetized elements. The effect of such a shape of the magnetic arrangement is the reduction of instantaneous power consumption while traveling due to the occurrence of lower braking forces. In order to perform a comparative analysis of the various geometries of the Halbach array, a simulation model was developed in the ANSYS Maxwell program. The performed calculations made it possible to determine the optimal... [more]

Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), energy harvester, galloping, numerical simulation
According to the engineering phenomenon of the galloping of ice-coated transmission lines at certain wind speeds, this paper proposes a novel type of energy harvester based on the galloping of a flexible structure. It uses the tension generated by the galloping structure to cause periodic strain on the piezoelectric cantilever beam, which is highly efficient for converting wind energy into electricity. On this basis, a physical model of fluid−structure interaction is established, and the Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes equation and SST K -ω turbulent model based on ANSYS Fluent are used to carry out a two-dimensional steady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation. First, the CFD technology under different grid densities and time steps is verified. CFD numerical simulation technology is used to simulate the physical model of the energy harvester, and the effect of wind speed on the lateral displacement and aerodynamic force of the flexible structure is analyzed. March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computer simulations, drone electronics system, impulse generator, induced overvoltages, lightning, Modelling
This paper presents the results of experimental tests of the impulse response of selected, essential components of a drone. A standardized lightning pulse that is often used during immunity tests of electronic devices in the aviation industry was applied. A single-stroke voltage impulse generator, MIG0618SS, was capable of producing the desired pulses. The input voltage was injected into selected electronic circuits of the drone system and pulses were observed in different parts of the machine. This allowed us to build a model based on the transmittance of the circuits most exposed to lightning overvoltages. The conducted tests were supported by impedance measurements carried out with an LCR-8110G meter. The obtained results made possible the development of a preliminary drone simulation model, allowing us to determine the size of the disturbances arising in individual circuits during nearby lightning. A discussion of the influence of close lightning discharges on expected induced over... [more]

Keywords: aeroelasticity, Computational Fluid Dynamics, optical flow, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind tunnel test
Despite their simplicity, photovoltaic (PV) modules are often arranged in structures that can be affected by severe and complex wind loads: in this context, the wind flow and the dynamic excitation induced by vortex shedding can introduce unexpected aeroelastic responses. This work introduces a novel wind tunnel application of experimental techniques to address this issue by the use of flow visualisation and video postprocessing, through the optical flow algorithm. Numerical simulations based on unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) models are performed and compared against the experimental wind tunnel tests on a PV panel that was also instrumented with pressure taps. A setup with a 65∘ tilt angle was examined because, based on preliminary analyses, it was considered interesting for the free flow−wake transition associated with the dynamic response of the PV panel. The comparison of the experimental and numerical average wind fields supported that the proposed optical flow me... [more]
Combustion of Fuel Surrogates: An Application to Gas Turbine Engines

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fuel, gas turbine, kerosene, numerical analysis
The previously developed approaches for fuel droplet heating and evaporation processes, mainly using the Discrete Multi Component Model (DMCM), are investigated for the aerodynamic combustion simulation. The models have been recently improved and generalised for a broad range of bio-fossil fuel blends so that the application areas are broadened with an increased accuracy. The main distinctive features of these models are that they consider the impacts of species’ thermal conductivities and diffusivities within the droplets in order to account for the temperature gradient, transient diffusion of species and recirculation. A formulation of fuel surrogates is made using the recently introduced model, referred to as “Complex Fuel Surrogate Model (CFSM)”, and analysing their heating, evaporation and combustion characteristics. The CFSM is aimed to reduce the full composition of fuel to a much smaller number of components based on their mass fractions, and to formulate fuel surrogates. Such... [more]

Increasing restrictions on the emission of greenhouse gases by the standards and the European Union’s policy aims at increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the energy mix of the Member States. Subsequently, we observe a rapid increase in the installed capacity of the renewable energy sources. Renewable energy sources are currently the fastest growing sectors of energy generation, specifically the photovoltaic sector. In 2005, the total installed capacity in photovoltaic installations in the European Union was about 2.17 GW, while in 2019 it was already over 130 GW. Currently, due to many forms of incentive governmental measures the construction of photovoltaic installations is rapidly increasing with installations mounted on private houses and buildings. The article presents selected issues concerning the failure modes of photovoltaic installations and a comparative assessment of the estimated and the real measured electrical production of an operational photovoltaic insta... Keywords: base oil, decision tree, Machine Learning, random forest, SVR, XGBoost
The quality of feedstock used in base oil processing depends on the source of the crude oil. Moreover, the refinery is fed with various blends of crude oil to meet the demand of the refining products. These circumstances have caused changes of quality of the feedstock for the base oil production. Often the feedstock properties deviate from the original properties measured during the process design phase. To recalculate and remodel using first principal approaches requires significant costs due to the detailed material characterizations and several pilot-plant runs requirements. To perform all material characterization and pilot plant runs every time the refinery receives a different blend of crude oil will simply multiply the costs. Due to economic reasons, only selected lab characterizations are performed, and the base oil processing plant is operated reactively based on the feedback of the lab analysis of the base oil product. However, this reactive method leads to loss in production... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air cooling assisted heat pipe (ACAH), computational fluid dynamic (CFD), heat pipe, lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery, thermal management system (TMS)
This paper presents the concept of a hybrid thermal management system (TMS) including natural convection, heat pipe, and air cooling assisted heat pipe (ACAH) for electric vehicles. Experimental and numerical tests are described to predict the thermal behavior of a lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery cell in a fast discharging process (8C rate). Specifications of different cooling techniques are deliberated and compared. The mathematical models are solved by COMSOL Multiphysics® (Stockholm, Sweden), the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. The simulation results are validated against experimental data with an acceptable error range. The results specify that the maximum cell temperatures for the cooling systems of natural convection, heat pipe, and ACAH reach 56, 46.3, and 38.3 °C, respectively. We found that the maximum cell temperature experiences a 17.3% and 31% reduction with the heat pipe and ACAH, respectively, compared with natural convection.

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discontinuity factors, generalized equivalence theory, nodal expansion method, transport-corrected SP3
The Simplified Spherical Harmonic (SPN) approximation was first introduced as a three-dimensional (3D) extension of the plane-geometry Spherical Harmonic (PN) equations. A third order SPN (SP3) solver, recently implemented in the Nodal Expansion Method (NEM), has shown promising performance in the reactor core neutronics simulations. This work is focused on the development and implementation of the transport-corrected interface and boundary conditions in an NEM SP3 solver, following recent published work on the rigorous SPN theory for piecewise homogeneous regions. A streamlined procedure has been developed to generate the flux zero and second order/moment discontinuity factors (DFs) of the generalized equivalence theory to minimize the error introduced by pin-wise homogenization. Moreover, several colorset models with varying sizes and configurations are later explored for their capability of generating DFs that can produce results equivalent to that using the whole-core homogenizatio... Keywords: power line communications, power line intelligent metering evolution, simulations, traffic analysis, web applications
AMIs (Advanced Metering Infrastructures) present an important role in Smart City environments, especially from the point of view of distribution and customers, offering control and monitoring capabilities. The use of PLC (Power Line Communication) technology offers a wide range of advantages in AMI, including not needing to deploy an additional communication infrastructure. However, the electrical network was not initially designed for communications, as these networks pose problems depending on the connected loads, such as network impedance variation, frequency selectivity or noise. For this reason, the use of simulators is proposed to facilitate the deployments based on PLC networks, and analysis and diagnosis tools for the identification of problems in operating networks are also required. This paper presents a toolkit for evaluating and analyzing the performance of PLC networks. This toolkit is composed of SimPRIME, a simulator for the evaluation of NB-PLC PRIME (PoweR line Intelli... Keywords: cavity, chemical reaction, decomposition, heat transfer, methane, numerical simulation, optical, reactor, Solar Thermal
This study aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere and effectively utilize wasted resources by converting methane, the main component of biogas, into hydrogen. Therefore, a reactor was developed to decompose methane into carbon and hydrogen using solar thermal sources instead of traditional energy sources, such as coal and petroleum. The optical distributions were analyzed using TracePro, a Monte Carlo ray-tracing-based program. In addition, Fluent, a computational fluid dynamics program, was used for the heat and mass transfer, and chemical reaction. The cylindrical indirect heating reactor rotates at a constant speed to prevent damage by the heat source concentrated at the solar furnace. The inside of the reactor was filled with a porous catalyst for methane decomposition, and the outside was surrounded by insulation to reduce heat loss. The performance of the reactor, according to the cavity model, was calculated when solar heat was concentrated on the reactor surf... [more]

Oxygen production from air belongs to energy-intense processes and, as a result, possibilities for its decrease are a frequent topic of optimization studies, often performed with simulation software such as Aspen Plus or Aspen HYSYS. To obtain veritable results and sound solutions, a suitable calculation method hand in hand with justified assumptions and simplifications should form the base of any such studies. Thus, an analysis of the study by Hamayun et al., Energies 2020, 13, 6361, has been performed, and several weak spots of the study, including oversimplified assumptions, improper selection of a thermodynamic package for simulation and omission of certain technological aspects relevant for energy consumption optimization studies, were identified. For each of the weak spots, a recommendation based on good praxis and relevant scientific literature is provided, and general recommendations are formulated with the hope that this comment will aid all researchers utilizing Aspen Plus an... Keywords: dual-stator, linear compressor, permanent magnet motor, ring-type magnet
This paper presents the modular topologies of the dual-stator dual-winding permanent magnet (PM) linear motors for linear compressors used in the electrified transportation application. Compared to the conventional PM linear motor in compressor, the proposed modular model is designed with the same volume but a higher thrust force density and a further higher air pressure in air cylinder, which are competitive in the compressor industry. The proposed compact PM linear motors are constructed with tubular windings in both inner and outer stators, as well as the ring-type magnet in mover. Simulation results of motor characteristics are compared by three-dimensional finite element method (3D FEM). Finally, the prototypes of the proposed PM linear motors are manufactured and tested for the linear compressor application.

Keywords: aircraft, commutator device, differential equations, Fokker–Planck equation, starter-generator
The article describes the method of predicting the reliability and durability of an aircraft commutator, which is a primary source of electric energy in helicopters. Tests were conducted for 10 starter-generators. From this research it follows that the technical condition of brushes and bearings has a significant impact on the reliability of starter-generators. The reliability of starter-generators was determined based on the method consisting of two stages that was adopted: the first stage involved determining the density function of changes in diagnostic parameter depending on the operating time, but the second stage included the assessment of the reliability of bearings of the starter-generator taking into account the real flight profile. The first stage of the adopted method consisted of defining the dynamic model of changing the length of the starter-generator’s brush, which became the probabilistic model. Subsequently, based on differential equations, Fokker−Planck partial differ... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Adsorption, diffusion, huff-n-puff, hysteresis, ultratight reservoir
Cyclic solvent injection, known as solvent huff-n-puff, is one of the promising techniques for enhancing oil recovery from shale reservoirs. This study investigates the huff-n-puff performance in ultratight shale reservoirs by conducting large-scale numerical simulations for a wide range of reservoir fluid types (retrograde condensate, volatile oil, and black oil) and different injection gases (CO2, C2H6, and C3H8). A dual-porosity compositional model is utilized to comprehensively evaluate the impact of multicomponent diffusion, adsorption, and hysteresis on the production performance of each reservoir fluid and the retention capacity of the injection gases. The results show that the huff-n-puff process improves oil recovery by 4−6% when injected with 10% PV of gas. Huff-n-puff efficiency increases with decreasing gas-oil ratio (GOR). C2H6 provides the highest recovery for the black oil and volatile oil systems, and CO2 provides the highest recovery for retrograde condensate fluid typ... [more]
Co-Gasification Characteristics of Coal and Biomass Using CO2 Reactant under Thermodynamic Equilibrium Modelling
M. Shahabuddin, Sankar Bhattacharya
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aspen plus modelling, Biomass, co-gasification, CO2 reactant, Coal, Syngas
This study assessed the entrained flow co-gasification characteristics of coal and biomass using thermodynamic equilibrium modelling. The model was validated against entrained flow gasifier data published in the literature. The gasification performance was evaluated under different operating conditions, such as equivalence ratio, temperature, pressure and coal to biomass ratio. It is observed that the lower heating value (LHV) and cold gas efficiency (CGE) increase with increasing temperature until the process reaches a steady state. The effect of pressure on syngas composition is dominant only at non-steady state conditions (<1100 °C). The variation in syngas composition is minor up to the blending of 50% biomass (PB50). However, the PB50 shows a higher LHV and CGE than pure coal by 12%and 18%, respectively. Overall, biomass blending of up to 50% favours gasification performance with an LHV of 12 MJ/kg and a CGE of 78%.
