DCM Boost PFC for High Brightness LED Driver Applications
Tal Tayar, Alexander Abramovitz, Doron Shmilovitz.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AC-DC conversion, boost converter, DCM, LED driver, PFC.
This paper is concerned with the derivation of a discontinuous conduction mode boost PFC rectifier as a driver for high-power LED lighting applications. The proposed driver is operated in the current mode regime while emulating a resistance towards the line, thus attaining a near unity power factor and low total harmonic distortion of the line current. Theoretical analysis is reported and conditions for the low LED flicker are derived. A method of design for minimum THD is also suggested. Simulation and experimental results are reported.

Rajendra S. Rajpoot, Shanmugam. Dhinakaran, Md. Mahbub Alam.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bluff body, heated square cylinder, mixed convection, mixture model, nanofluids.
The present study deals with the numerical simulation of mixed convective heat transfer from an unconfined heated square cylinder using nanofluids (Al2O3-water) for Reynolds number (Re) 10−150, Richardson number (Ri) 0−1, and nanoparticles volume fractions (φ) 0−5%. Two-phase modelling approach (i.e., Eulerian-mixture model) is adopted to analyze the flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids. A square cylinder with a constant temperature higher than that of the ambient is exposed to a uniform flow. The governing equations are discretized and solved by using a finite volume method employing the SIMPLE algorithm for pressure−velocity coupling. The thermo-physical properties of nanofluids are calculated from the theoretical models using a single-phase approach. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids are studied for considered parameters and compared with those of the base fluid. The temperature field and flow structure around the square cylinder are visualized... [more]
Procedure for the Accurate Modelling of Ring Induction Motors
Krzysztof Tomczyk, Tomasz Makowski, Małgorzata Kowalczyk, Ksenia Ostrowska, Piotr Beńko.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accurate modelling, modelling of ring induction motors, Monte Carlo method.
This paper proposes a procedure for the accurate modelling of the ring induction motors (RIMs), based on the Monte Carlo (MC) method and the relations presented in the relevant metrology guidelines. Modelling was carried out based on the measured data for the torque-slip characteristic (TSC) and using the equivalent circuit for the RIM. The parameters included an extended Kloss equation (EKE) and the associated uncertainties were determined using the MC method. The polynomial procedure was applied as a numerical tool to complement the MC method to determine the power losses in the stator iron and the relevant uncertainty. This is in line with international standards for the theory of uncertainty application in the field of engineering. The novelty of this paper refers to the accurate modelling of the RIMs obtained by determining the corresponding uncertainties. The procedure presented in this paper was developed based on the assumption that the parameters of the equivalent circuit are... [more]

Salah Vaisi, Saleh Mohammadi, Kyoumars Habibi.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building heat demand and generation, district heat network, GIS energy mapping, heat balance, heat map, Ireland, thermal energy modelling, university campus.
District heating (DH) has a major potential to increase the efficiency, security, and sustainability of energy management at the community scale. However, there is a huge challenge for decision makers due to the lack of knowledge about thermal energy demand during a year. Thermal energy demand is strongly dependent on the outdoor temperature, building area, and activities. In this context, this paper presents an innovative monthly thermal energy mapping method to calculate and visualize heat demand accurately for various types of buildings. The method includes three consecutive phases: (i) calculating energy loss, (ii) completing a dataset that includes energy and building information, and (iii) generating the monthly heat demand maps for the community. Determining the amount of demand and the best location for energy generators from the perspective of energy efficiency in a DH system in an urban context is one of the important applications of heat maps. Exploring heat demand character... [more]
Evolution of Fundamental Price Determination within Electricity Market Simulations
Lothar Wyrwoll, Moritz Nobis, Stephan Raths, Albert Moser.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: counterintuitive flows, electricity price modeling, flow-based market coupling, Lagrangian relaxation, market coupling.
Electricity prices are the key instrument for coordinating electricity markets. For long-term market analyses, price determination based on fundamental unit commitment simulations is required. Within the European wholesale market, electricity prices result from a market clearing, which finds a welfare-optimal price−quantity tuple considering a coupling of multiple market areas with limited transmission capacity. With increasing exchange capacities in Europe, the precise modeling of the market coupling is required. Many market simulation models use multi-stage approaches with a separation of market coupling and price determination. In this paper, we analyze a new single-stage approach that combines both steps and theoretically and empirically demonstrate its precision by a backtest. For this purpose, we compare a simulated versus a historical electricity price distribution. Moreover, we explain the necessary adjustments for future regulatory developments of the European electricity mark... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: COMSOL multiphysics, large eddy simulations, liquid metal blanket, magneto-convection, MHD benchmarking, turbulent MHD.
Liquid metal breeding blankets are extensively studied in nuclear fusion. In the main proposed systems, the Water Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) and the Dual Coolant Lithium Lead (DCLL), the liquid metal flows under an intense transverse magnetic field, for which a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effect is produced. The result is the alteration of all the flow features and the increase in the pressure drops. Although the latter issue can be evaluated with system models, 3D MHD codes are of extreme importance both in the design phase and for safety analyses. To test the reliability of COMSOL Multiphysics for the development of MHD models, a method for verification and validation of magnetohydrodynamic codes is followed. The benchmark problems solved regard steady state, fully developed flows in rectangular ducts, non-isothermal flows, flow in a spatially varying transverse magnetic field and two different unsteady turbulent problems, quasi-two-dimensional MHD turbulent flow and 3D turbulent MHD f... Decline in Share Prices of Energy and Fuel Companies on the Warsaw Stock Exchange as a Reaction to the COVID-19 Pandemic
Beata Bieszk-Stolorz, Iwona Markowicz.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy sector, fuels sector, modelling the risk of decline in share prices, survival analysis.
Many factors influence the prices of energy commodities and the value of energy and fuel companies. Among them there are the following factors: economic, social, environmental and political, and recently also the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the paper is to examine what the probability and intensity of a decrease in the prices of shares of energy and fuel companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (Poland) was during the first wave of the pandemic in the first quarter of 2020. The study used the survival analysis methods: the Kaplan-Meier estimator, the test of equality of duration curves and the Cox non-proportional hazards model. The analysis showed that the probability and intensity of price decline of energy and fuel companies in the initial period was the same as that of other companies. The differences become apparent only after 50 days from the established maximum of their value. The risk of price declines in energy and fuel companies increased significantly. This situation... Energy efficiency is a huge opportunity for both the developed and the developing world, and ICT will be the key enabler towards realising this challenge, in a huge variety of ways across the full range of industries. In the telecommunications space in particular, power consumption and the resulting energy-related pollution are becoming major operational and economical concerns. The exponential increases in network traffic and the number of connected devices both make energy efficiency an increasingly important concern for the mobile networks of the (near) future. More specifically, as 5G is being deployed at a time when energy efficiency appears as a significant matter for the network ability to take into account and to serve societal and environmental issues, this can play a major role in helping industries to achieve sustainability goals. Within this scope, energy efficiency has recently gained its own role as a performance measure and design constraint for 5G communication networks... [more]
Numerical Investigation of the Influence of Vegetation on the Aero-Thermal Performance of Buildings with Courtyards in Hot Climates

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD Fluent, courtyard, nature ventilation, thermal performance, vegetation.
Natural ventilation is an energy-efficient way to provide fresh air and enhance indoor comfort levels. The wind-driven natural ventilation in courtyards has been investigated by many researchers, particularly the influence of the spatial configuration and environmental parameters on the ventilation and thermal comfort performance. However, previous research has mainly focused on the courtyard region instead of the indoor spaces surrounding it. Additionally, as a microclimate regulator, courtyards are rarely assessed in terms of the impact of vegetation, including its impact on energy consumption and thermal comfort. Evapotranspiration from vegetation can help lower air temperature in the surrounding environment and, therefore, its influence on the ventilation and thermal comfort in buildings with courtyards should be evaluated. The present study investigates the impact of vegetation on the aero-thermal comfort conditions in a courtyard and surrounding buildings in hot climates. Computa... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annual performance, curved baffle design, photovoltaic thermal, TRNSYS simulation.
A Photovoltaic Thermal (PVT) collector produces heat and electricity simultaneously. Air-type PVT collector uses air as a transfer medium to take heat from PV back side surface. The performance of the air-type PVT collector is affected by design elements such as PV types, inside structures in heat collecting space (baffle or fins), the shape of the air pathway, etc. In this study, an advanced air-type PVT collector was designed with curved baffles (absorber) to improve thermal performance. Within the air-type PVT collector, PV cells were arranged in an interspaced design, and the curved baffles were located in the collecting space to increase heat efficiently. The absorber received solar radiation directly and was utilized as baffles for improving thermal performance. The air-type PVT collector was fabricated and tested in an outdoor environment considering the climatic conditions of Daejeon, Republic of Korea. In addition, based on experiment parameters and data, the annual thermal an... [more]
Effect of Operating Conditions on the Performance of Gas−Liquid Mixture Roots Pumps
Qing Guo, Kai Luo, Daijin Li, Chuang Huang, Kan Qin.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, energy systems, multiphase flow, Roots pump.
The performance of the gas−liquid mixture Roots pump at different operating conditions is investigated in this paper. The pump efficiency was first increased from 48% to 64%, and then decreased to 59% with the increased inlet CO2 volume fraction (from 0.8 to 1). The increased rotational speed (from 1000 rpm to 4000 rpm) and pressure ratio (from 2 to 10) can lead to a reduction in the pump’s efficiency from 67% to 43% and from 48% to 33%, respectively. The variation in the pump’s efficiency is affected by the volumetric efficiency and the flow efficiency simultaneously. The high pressure and the CO2 volume fraction in the outlet zone can increase the leakage, leading to a reduction in the volumetric efficiency. The flow efficiency decreases with the increase in the local pressure at the outlet zone and the backflow density. The outlet zone pressure can also affect the fluid properties by changing the density of the gas phase. Therefore, the combined effect of the outlet zone pressure an... [more]

Armando Castillejo-Cuberos, José Miguel Cardemil, Rodrigo Escobar.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: atmospheric modeling, Chile, irradiance attenuation, Linke turbidity, solar eclipse.
Solar eclipses are astronomic phenomena in which the Earth’s moon transits between the planet and the Sun, projecting a shadow onto the planet’s surface. As solar power installed capacity increases, detailed studies of this region-wide phenomenon’s effect in irradiance is of interest; however, the literature mainly reports its effects on localized scales. A measurement campaign spanning over 1400 km was pursued for the 2 July 2019 total solar eclipse in Chile, to register the event and establish a modeling framework to assess solar eclipse effects in irradiance over wide regional scales. This work describes the event and presents an estimation framework to decompose atmospheric and eclipse effects on irradiance. An analytical model was applied to study irradiance attenuation throughout the Chilean mainland territory, using satellite-derived and astronomical data as inputs compared to ground measurements in eight stations. Results showed good agreement between model and observations, wi... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamic, internal combustion engine, rotor, two-stage turbocharger, variable geometry turbocharger.
The modern internal combustion engine (ICE) has to meet several requirements. It has to be reliable with the reduced emission of pollutant gasses and low maintenance requirements. What is more, it has to be efficient both at low-load and high-load operating conditions. For this purpose, a variable turbine geometry (VTG) turbocharger is used to provide proper engine acceleration of exhaust gases at low-load operating conditions. Such a solution is also efficient at high-load engine operating conditions. In this paper, the result of an unsteady, three-dimensional (3D) simulation of the variable two-stage turbine system is discussed. Three different VTG positions were considered for those simulations, along with three different turbine speeds. The turbine inlet was modeled as six equally placed exhaust pipes for each cylinder to eliminate the interference of pressure waves. The flow field at the outlet of the 1st stage nozzle vane and 2nd stage rotor was investigated. The simulations show... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: daily pattern, district heating demand, heat load modelling, probability distribution, seasonal linear regression, stochastic analysis, superimposition approach.
Modelling heat load is a crucial challenge for the proper management of heat production and distribution. Several studies have tackled this issue at building and urban levels, however, the current scale of interest is shifting to the district level due to the new paradigm of the smart system. This study presents a stochastic procedure to model district heat load with a different number of buildings aggregation. The proposed method is based on a superimposition approach by analysing the seasonal component using a linear regression model on the outdoor temperature and the intra-daily component through a bi-parametric distribution of different times of the day. Moreover, an empirical relationship, that estimates the demand variation given the average demand together with a user aggregation coefficient, is proposed. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, the study of a group of residential users connected to the district heating system of Bozen-Bolzano is carried out. In... [more]

Keywords: CO2 sequestration, Farnsworth Unit, GEM, multi-phase fluid flow, reactive solute transport, STOMP, TOUGHREACT.
The objectives of this study were (1) to assess the fate and impact of CO2 injected into the Morrow B Sandstone in the Farnsworth Unit (FWU) through numerical non-isothermal reactive transport modeling, and (2) to compare the performance of three major reactive solute transport simulators, TOUGHREACT, STOMP-EOR, and GEM, under the same input conditions. The models were based on a quarter of a five-spot well pattern where CO2 was injected on a water-alternating-gas schedule for the first 25 years of the 1000 year simulation. The reservoir pore fluid consisted of water with or without petroleum. The results of the models have numerous broad similarities, such as the pattern of reservoir cooling caused by the injected fluids, a large initial pH drop followed by gradual pH neutralization, the long-term persistence of an immiscible CO2 gas phase, the continuous dissolution of calcite, very small decreases in porosity, and the increasing importance over time of carbonate mineral CO2 sequestr... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control system design, molten salt reactor plant, nonlinear dynamic model, normal and accident conditions, transient characteristics analysis.
A molten salt reactor (MSR) has unique safety and economic advantages due to the liquid fluoride salt adopted as the reactor fuel and heat carrier fluid. The operation scheme and control strategy of the MSR plant are significantly different from those of traditional solid-fuel reactors because of the delayed neutron precursors drift with the liquid-fuel flow. In this paper, a simulation platform of the MSR plant is developed to study the control characteristics under normal and accident conditions. A nonlinear dynamic model of the whole system is built in the platform consisting of a liquid-fuel reactor with a graphite moderator, an intermediate heat exchanger and a steam generator. A new control strategy is presented based on a feed-forward and feedback combined scheme, a power control system and a steam temperature control system are designed to regulate load changes of the plant. Three different types of operation conditions are simulated with the control systems, including transien... [more]

Keywords: dynamic simulation, experimental testing, neonatal incubators, Peltier effect, thermal comfort, thermoelectric system.
This work describes the design, construction and testing of a thermo-electric conditioning device installed in a neonatal incubator with the aim of improving the precision in the regulation of the interior air temperature, reducing noise and interior vibration, and improving the life of the neonate. A simplified one-dimensional thermal model has been developed, made up of resistances and thermal capacities that simulate the thermal behaviour of all the elements of the system from end to end. All the equations of the model are obtained in a nodal way, allowing the mathematical relationship between the input and output to be known. This model makes it possible to improve temperature control, avoiding the deviations that occur in the traditional model controlled by sensors at both ends. The computational model allows to predict the variation of temperatures in transient and permanent regime. This model allows the design and sizing of the thermoelectric system for different outdoor environ... [more]

Keywords: efficiency improvement, electric vehicle, electric vehicle sizing, fuel cell, hybrid sources.
Hybrid vehicles are now more common in response to increasing global warming. The hybridization of energy sources and energy storage units enables improving the sustainability, reliability, and robustness of power systems. To reach the objective of zero emissions, a proton exchange membrane hydrogen fuel-cell was utilized as an energy source. The aim of this research was to create an accurate optimal sizing procedure for determining the nominal rating of the necessary sources. We modeled the fuel cell and the battery pack using data from real experimental results to create the generic database. Then, we added data on the mission profile, system constraints, and the minimization target function. The mission profile was then analyzed by the sizing algorithm to determine optional minimum and maximum fuel cell ratings. Analyzing the optional solutions using the vehicle real time energy management system controller resulted in a set of solutions for each available rated fuel cell, and the o... [more]

Keywords: complicated flow CFD, dynamic yaw, MRT-LBM, near wake, overall aerodynamic performance, wind turbine.
The dynamic yaw motion of the wind turbine will affect the overall aerodynamic performance of the impeller and the corresponding wake flow, but the current research on this issue is inadequate. Thus, it is very necessary to study the complicated near-wake aerodynamic behaviors during the yaw process and the closely related blade aerodynamic characteristics. This work utilized the multi-relaxation time lattice Boltzmann (MRT-LBM) model to investigate the integral aerodynamic performance characteristics of the specified impeller and the dynamic changes in the near wake under a sine yawing process, in which the normalized result is adopted to facilitate data comparison and understanding. Moreover, considering the complexity of the wake flows, the large eddy simulation (LES) and wall-adapting local eddy-viscosity (WALE) model are also used in this investigation. The related results indicate that the degree of stability of tip spiral wake in the dynamic yaw condition is inversely related to... [more]

Wei Huang, Jiming Ma, Xinlei Guo, Huokun Li, Jiazhen Li, Gang Wang.
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: sensitivity analysis, small oscillation stability, surge tank, throttled orifice, velocity head.
Surge tanks (STs) are important facilities for ensuring the safety of hydropower stations. Reducing the ST size under the premise of ensuring stable mass oscillations within the ST is the main issue. First, according to the basic equations of the mass oscillation for a hydropower station with an ST, a novel expression of the critical stability section of an ST is deduced considering the velocity head and throttle loss. Then, the sensitivity of each influencing factor of the proposed stability criterion is analyzed. Ultimately, through the simulation of small oscillation transients in two case studies, the water level oscillations (WLOs) in an ST based on three stability criteria are compared. The results show that a 20% smaller ST in a hydropower station may result in 10.4% larger oscillations and a 60% smaller ST in a pumped storage power station may result in 14.3% larger oscillations. Compared with the Thoma criterion and the Chinese specification criterion, the stability criterion... [more]

Keywords: bubble-point pressure, CO2 emissions, degassing, gas solubility, geothermal.
With the growing interest in geothermal energy as a renewable and sustainable energy source, nowadays engineers and researchers are facing technological and environmental challenges during geothermal wells’ operation or energy recovery improvement by optimizing surface installations. One of the major problems encountered is the degassing of geothermal brines which are often loaded with dissolved gases, resulting in technical problems (scale formation, corrosion, reduced process efficiency, etc.) and environmental problems through the possible emission of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4 and water vapor) into the atmosphere. In this work, a method to predict, from readily available information such as temperature and GLR, the bubble point pressure of geothermal fluids as well as the GHG emission rate depending on the surface conditions is presented. This method is based on an extended version of the Soreide and Whitson model with new parameters optimized on the solubility data of several gase... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: luminescent solar concentrator, microalgae, power generation in space, solar spectrum splitter.
The full utilization of broadband solar irradiance is becoming increasingly useful for applications such as long-term space missions, wherein power generation from external sources and regenerative life support systems are essential. Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) can be designed to separate sunlight into photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and non-PAR to simultaneously provide for algae cultivation and electric power generation. However, the efficiency of LSCs suffers from high emission losses. In this work, we show that by shaping the LSC in the form of an elliptic array, rather than the conventional planar configuration, emission losses can be drastically reduced to the point that they are almost eliminated. Numerical results, considering the combined effects of emission, transmission and surface scattering losses show the optical efficiency of the elliptic array LSC is 63%, whereas, in comparison, the optical efficiency for conventional planar LSCs is 47.2%.
