Przemysław Motyl, Marcin Wikło, Julita Bukalska, Bartosz Piechnik, Rafał Kalbarczyk
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, stove, thermal measurements
This work proposes a comprehensive approach to modifying the design of wood stoves with a heating power up to 20 kW, including design works, simulations, and experimental research. The work is carried out in two stages. In the first part, a numerical model is proposed of the fireplace insert including fluid flow, the chemical combustion reaction, and heat exchange (FLUENT software is applied to solve the problem). The results of the simulation were compared with the experiment carried out on the test bench. A comparison of the experimental and numerical results was made for the temperature distribution along with the concentration of CO, CO2, and O2. Construction changes were proposed in the second stage, together with numerical simulations whose goal was an increase in the efficiency of the heating devices. The results obtained show that the average temperature in the chimney flue, which has a low value that is a determinant of the higher efficiency of the heating devices, was reduced... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element model, pantograph and catenary, pantograph catenary system, stable current collection, trolley wire overhead electrically actuated LHD
The pantograph catenary system plays an important role in the power performance of electric mining vehicles. A pantograph catenary system combining both a pantograph and a catenary is one of the most promising solutions. As a case study, this paper discusses the dynamic performance and the stable current collection of a pantograph catenary system for a 14 ton underground overhead wire electrical actuated load, haul, dump machine (LHD). First, based on the optimized finite element simulation process, finite element models of the pantograph system and the catenary system are established. Second, the motion equation of the catenary is improved, and the finite element model of the pantograph catenary system is established. Finally, a dynamic simulation experiment is performed to determine the dynamic performance of the pantograph catenary system. The results show that when the radius of the contact wire is set to 0.00564 m and the tension of contact wire is set to 30 KN, the current collec... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption chiller, sconomic analysis, silica gel, solar cooling
Performance assessment of a two-bed silica gel-water adsorption refrigeration system driven by solar thermal energy is carried out under a climatic condition typical of Perth, Australia. A Fourier series is used to simulate solar radiation based on the actual data obtained from Meteonorm software, version 7.0 for Perth, Australia. Two economic methodologies, Payback Period and Life-Cycle Saving are used to evaluate the system economics and optimize the need for solar collector areas. The analysis showed that the order of Fourier series did not have a significant impact on the simulation radiation data and a three-order Fourier series was good enough to approximate the actual solar radiation. For a typical summer day, the average cooling capacity of the chiller at peak hour (13:00) is around 11 kW while the cyclic chiller system coefficient of performance (COP) and solar system COP are around 0.5 and 0.3, respectively. The economic analysis showed that the payback period for the solar a... [more]

Keywords: explosion, finite element analysis, human–machine interface, numerical simulation, pneumatic energy, safety cage, safety shield, tire
The article suggests and supports a simulation-based methodology for determining whether the dynamic strength of tire inflation restraining devices for tire inflation meet quality requirements and ensure operator safety during a potential tire explosion. Dynamic strength tests using an NM-600 safety shield and NK-0728 safety cage during a 29.5 R25X tire explosion at a pressure of 10 bar were presented as an example application of this methodology. The shield was subjected to destructive tests involving the use of a 2200 kg impactor, dropping it so that the minimum kinetic energy reached 20 kJ at the time of impact. Analyzed devices were constructed of S355 steel in accordance with EN 10025. The Cowper−Symonds model of material for strain rate phenomena was used in the calculations. Simulations of a 20 kJ ring impact against the cage were performed. The equivalent stress distribution was determined, and displacement contour lines for the maximum dynamic deformation value and plastic def... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coal and gas outburst, excavation, expansionary evolution, gas energy, numerical modelling, plastic zone
Factors leading to coal and gas outbursts are complicated, and the accuracy of predicting outbursts remains difficult to achieve. Therefore, coal and gas outburst risk are still a scientific challenge in the fields of mining, geology, safe engineering, and rock mechanics. Theories explaining and predicting coal and gas outbursts associated with restored strain and gas energy are hot topics. Based on numerical modelling, the evolution of a plastic zone ahead of an excavation face with change of direction and magnitude of regional pre-mining stress field were analyzed. A mechanical analysis model for the expansionary evolution process of the plastic zone ahead of the excavation face was constructed, and the expansionary evolution characteristics of plastic zone ahead of the excavation face were analyzed. The physical and mechanical process and basic conditions for the initiation and development of coal and gas outbursts induced by evolution of plastic zone were discussed. The research pr... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, classification, electric mobility, missing data imputation, regression, supervised machine learning
Despite a rapid increase of public interest for electric mobility, several factors still impede Battery Electric Vehicles’ (BEVs) acceptance. These factors include their limited range and inconvenient charging. For mitigating these limitations to users, certain BEV-specific services are required. Therefore, such services provide a reliable range prediction and routing, including charging-stop planning. The basis of these services is a precise and reliable Energy Demand (ED) prediction. For that matter, aggregated fleet-vehicle data combined with map-specific data (e.g., road slope) form an energetic map, which can serve for precise ED predictions. However, data coverage is paramount for these predictions, more specifically regarding gapless energetic maps. This work aims to eliminate the energetic map’s gaps using two Machine Learning (ML) approaches: regression and classification. The proposed ML solution builds upon the synergy between map-information and crowdsourced driving profile... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic effects, EHV distribution substation, Monte Carlo simulation, short circuit duration
The paper focuses on finding short circuit duration for computing the dynamic effects in Extra High Voltage (EHV) distribution substations with flexible conductors with the use of probabilistic method. To find fault duration for selected substation points, a risk criterion was involved, namely the expected annual frequency of exceeding the calculated values of dynamic forces. A dedicated simulation model based on the Monte Carlo method was used to analyze the dynamic effects of short circuit current flow in the substation during faults within it and in its vicinity. The short circuit duration model is the key part of the simulation model. Due to the discussion of how the selected factors affect the estimated short circuit duration, indications helpful to find the values of the latter were formulated and some examples for the 220 kV distribution substation were given.

Keywords: breaking wave, Computational Fluid Dynamics, turbine and generator characteristics, wave energy conversion device
A new type of wave energy converter which harnesses electricity from onshore breaking waves has been studied at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) since 2014. This concept has been demonstrated at a coral beach on the Maldives since 2018. Wave energy conversion is possible when waves approaching the shore steepen due to decreased water depth resulting in wave breaks near the surface. A steepened wave reaches the critical velocity of 4~6 m/sec shoreward before it breaks. A rotating blade takes advantage of this breaking phenomenon to convert the wave energy into electricity. The work presented here includes an experimental and numerical investigation of a prototype model of the wave energy converter. The turbine having five blades of variable chord lengths, twist angles, and constant thickness profile from hub to tip was simulated under similar flow as well as testing conditions, to predict the turbine performance. A commercial computational fluid dyn... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compressible turbulent flow, Computational Fluid Dynamics, design rules, energy harvesting, high-pressure methane, tesla turbine
A countless amount of energy has been wasted in all kinds of expansion valves (EV) in industries. In fact, EVs, including regulators, throttling valves, capillary tubes, etc., have been used to intentionally reduce the potential of carrier fluid. City gate stations (CGS) have been recognized as one of the important points with high potential for energy harvesting due to its function for regulating natural gas (NG) pressure by EV. In this study, Tesla turbine (TT) is introduced as a new candidate for substitution of EV, particularly those that have been employed in CGS on high-pressure NG pipelines, as well as those applications in which high-potential fluid must be reduced to a low-potential state to form a complete thermodynamic cycle or to be used at end-user equipment. Although harvesting energy is one of the hottest fields of science and engineering, there are few traces of research on using a TT as an alternative for EVs, even for the industries possessing high-pressure lines. Hanne Kauko, Daniel Rohde, Armin Hafner
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Dynamic Modelling, low temperature district heating, waste heat utilization
District heating enables an economical use of energy sources that would otherwise be wasted to cover the heating demands of buildings in urban areas. For efficient utilization of local waste heat and renewable heat sources, low distribution temperatures are of crucial importance. This study evaluates a local heating network being planned for a new building area in Trondheim, Norway, with waste heat available from a nearby ice skating rink. Two alternative supply temperature levels have been evaluated with dynamic simulations: low temperature (40 °C), with direct utilization of waste heat and decentralized domestic hot water (DHW) production using heat pumps; and medium temperature (70 °C), applying a centralized heat pump to lift the temperature of the waste heat. The local network will be connected to the primary district heating network to cover the remaining heat demand. The simulation results show that with a medium temperature supply, the peak power demand is up to three times hig... [more]

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are becoming one of the main answers to the decarbonization of the transport sector and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) to the decarbonization of the electricity production sector. Nevertheless, their impact on the electric grids cannot be neglected. New paradigms for the management of the grids where they are connected, which are typically distribution grids in Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV), are necessary. A reform of dispatching rules, including the management of distribution grids and the resources there connected, is in progress in Europe. In this paper, a new paradigm linked to the design of reform is proposed and then tested, in reference to a real distribution grid, operated by the main Italian Distribution System Operator (DSO), e-distribuzione. First, in reference to suitable future scenarios of spread of RES-based power plants and EVs charging stations (EVCS), using Power Flow (PF) models, a check of the operation of the distribution grid, in... Keywords: bacteriophage, Biomass, cookstove, D-value, E. coli, US-EPA drinking water standards, water purification
While filtration, chlorination, and UV drinking water treatments are commonplace, globally an estimated 1.2 billion people continue to boil their drinking water over inefficient biomass fires instead because it allows them to use available resources paired with a time-tested and trusted method. Although boiling water is culturally well-established, there is vast potential to improve human health, environmental impact, and efficiency by leveraging the fact that a significant reduction in pathogenic microorganisms occurs at temperatures well below boiling through a process known as pasteurization. This paper presents the evaluation of a community-scale, biomass-powered, flow-through water pasteurization system that was designed to heat water to the temperature required for pasteurization to occur before recuperating heat while cooling treated water down to a safe-to-handle temperature. The system is then compared to other common thermal treatment methods including batch-boiling over open... [more]

Keywords: DH turbine, NACA 0015, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, surface roughness, tidal power, tribology
Although improving the hydrodynamic performance is a key objective in the design of ocean-powered devices, there are some factors that affect the efficiency of the device during its operation. In this study, the impacts of a wide range of surface roughness as a tribological parameter on stream flow around a hydro turbine and its power loss are studied. A comprehensive program of 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling, as well as an expansive range of experiments were carried out on a Darrieus Hydro (DH) turbine in order to measure reduction in hydrodynamic performance due to surface roughness. The results show that surface roughness of turbine blades plays an important role in the hydrodynamics of the flow around the turbine. The surface roughness increases turbulence and decreases the active fluid energy that is required for rotating the turbine, thereby reducing the performance of the turbine. The extent of the negative impact of surface roughness on the drag coefficient, pre... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, flotation tank, gas bubble, oil droplet, oil removal efficiency
A modified computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model has been developed to obtain oil removal efficiency for oily wastewater treatment in large-scale flotation tanks. According to the investigation of oil droplet/bubble interactions in a flotation tank, a modified Bloom−Heindel model is used to calculate the collision and attachment efficiencies between oil droplets and bubbles. Effects of the gas flow rate, oil diameter and oil concentration on oil removal efficiency of flotation tank were analyzed experimentally. The application scope of this modified CFD model is evaluated using experimental results. In addition, the comparison between the existing model and the modified model demonstrates that this modified CFD model can make a good prediction for the separation performance of the flotation tank.

Keywords: clustering, data stream, Machine Learning, smart metering, time series
Currently, thanks to the rapid development of wireless sensor networks and network traffic monitoring, the data stream is gradually becoming one of the most popular data generating processes. The data stream is different from traditional static data. Cluster analysis is an important technology for data mining, which is why many researchers pay attention to grouping streaming data. In the literature, there are many data stream clustering techniques, unfortunately, very few of them try to solve the problem of clustering data streams coming from multiple sources. In this article, we present an algorithm with a tree structure for grouping data streams (in the form of a time series) that have similar properties and behaviors. We have evaluated our algorithm over real multivariate data streams generated by smart meter sensors—the Irish Commission for Energy Regulation data set. There were several measures used to analyze the various characteristics of a tree-like clustering structure (comput... [more]

Keywords: bottom hole assembly (BHA), drill string dynamics, horizontal well, indoor experiment, lateral vibration, motion state
Motion states of bottom hole assembly (BHA) have a great effect on the trajectory control and drilling efficiency while rotary drilling. In order to study the motion states of BHA in horizontal wells, a BHA dynamic model with the finite element method was established. Meanwhile, an indoor experimental setup based on similarity criterion was designed and built to verify the numerical simulation results. Finally, the effects of measuring positions, rotate speeds, weight on bit (WOB), and friction coefficients on the motion states were analyzed in numerical simulation and experiment. The results show that the experimental results can match well with the numerical simulation results. The motion states of BHA in horizontal wells can be divided into three kinds, including circular arc swing, "8" shape swing, and dot-like circular motion. The circular arc swing mainly appears at middle section of BHA and occurs through the collective result of gravity and tangential friction. The dot-like cir... [more]

Keywords: bubble distribution, centrifugal pump, numerical simulation, population balance model
This work aimed to study the bubble distribution in a multiphase pump. A Euler-Euler inhomogeneous two-phase flow model coupled with a discrete particle population balance model (PBM) was used to simulate the whole flow channel of a three-stage gas-liquid two-phase centrifugal pump. Comparison of the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation results with experimental data shows that the model can accurately predict the performance of the pump under various operating conditions. In addition, the liquid phase velocity distribution, gas-phase distribution, and pressure distribution of the second stage impeller at a 0.5 span of blade height under three typical working conditions were compared. Results show that the region with high local gas volume fraction (LGVF) mainly appears on the suction surface (SS) of the blade. With the increase in inlet gas volume fraction (IGVF), vortices and low velocity recirculation regions are generated at the impeller outlet and SS of the blade, the area... [more]

Keywords: bifacial PV modeling, perimeter effect, solar tracker influence
The bifacial photovoltaic (PV) systems have recently met large interest. The performance of such systems heavily depends on the installation conditions and, in particular, on the albedo radiation collected by the module rear side. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to have an accurate performance model. To date, in the scientific literature, numerous models have been proposed and experimental data collected to study and optimize bifacial PV system performance. Currently, 3D and 2D models of bifacial PV devices exist. Though the former are more mathematically complex, they can lead to more accurate results, since they generally allow to fully consider the main aspects influencing a bifacial PV system performance. Recently, we have proposed and validated through experimental data a 3D model tested as a function of module height, tilt angle, and ground albedo. In this work, through such a model, we studied the role played by the perimeter zones surrounding the PV string, by considerin... [more]

Keywords: kernel extreme learning machine algorithm, machine learning techniques, near real time, voltage stability assessment, voltage stability index
This paper presents a novel approach for Voltage Stability Margin (VSM) estimation that combines a Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM) with a Mean-Variance Mapping Optimization (MVMO) algorithm. Since the performance of a KELM depends on a proper parameter selection, the MVMO is used to optimize such task. In the proposed MVMO-KELM model the inputs and output are the magnitudes of voltage phasors and the VSM index, respectively. A Monte Carlo simulation was implemented to build a data base for the training and validation of the model. The data base considers different operative scenarios for three type of customers (residential commercial and industrial) as well as N-1 contingencies. The proposed MVMO-KELM model was validated with the IEEE 39 bus power system comparing its performance with a support vector machine (SVM) and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach. Results evidenced a better performance of the proposed MVMO-KELM model when compared to such techniques. Furthermore... [more]

The paper deals with the three-dimensional theoretical and numerical investigation of the electrical performance of a Photovoltaic System (PV) with active fluid cooling (PVFC) in order to increase its efficiency in converting solar radiation into electricity. The paper represents a refinement of a previous study by the authors in which a one-dimensional theoretical model was presented to evaluate the best compromise, in terms of fluid flow rate, of net power gain in a cooled PV system. The PV system includes 20 modules cooled by a fluid circulating on the bottom, the piping network, and the circulating pump. The fully coupled thermal and electrical model was developed in a three-dimensional geometry and the results were discussed with respect to the one-dimensional approximation and to experimental tests. Numerical simulations show that a competitive mechanism between the power gain due to the cell temperature reduction and the power consumption of the pump exists, and that a best comp... [more]

Keywords: brittle rock, deformation displacement, FE simulation, harmonic dynamic load, stress field
In order to study the deformation displacement and the stress field of brittle rocks under harmonic dynamic loading, a series of systematic numerical simulations are conducted in this paper. A 3D uniaxial compression simulation is carried out to calibrate and determine the property parameters of sandstone and a model of the cylindrical indenter intruding the rock is proposed to analyze the process of elastic deformation. Four main parameters are taken into account, namely the position on the rock, the frequency and the amplitude of dynamic load, the type of indenter and the loading conditions (static and static-dynamic). Based on the analysis undertaken, it can be concluded that both of the deformation displacement and stress field of the rock change in a harmonic manner under the static-dynamic loads. The frequency and the amplitude of harmonic dynamic load determine the period and the magnitude of the rock response, respectively. In addition, the existence of harmonic dynamic load ca... [more]

Keywords: air-cooling systems, climate change, cooling systems, power plants, water scarcity, zero water use
Climate change and the increase of the consumption of energy resources are expected to further strain anticipated water stress scenarios. The operation of existing thermal plants depends greatly on their cooling capacity, for which large amounts of water are withdrawn and consumed. Dry-cooling systems, on the other hand, do not require water, but they are less efficient and more expensive relative to conventional water-based systems, because of their dependency on the ambient temperature. This paper introduces the new idea of replacing water-based cooling systems in thermal power plants with earth-cooling air tunnels. Based on the concept of existing earth-air heat exchangers, the system takes advantage of the low and relatively constant underground temperature for cooling ambient air before it is introduced in the air condenser of the plant. In this work, we present an initial design of such an open-loop system for a 20 MW concentrated solar power plant. A sensitivity study of both ge... [more]

Keywords: buildings, EnergyPlus, heat pumps
Dynamic energy modelling of buildings is a key factor for developing new strategies for energy management and consumption reduction. For this reason, the EnergyPlus software was used to model a near-zero energy building (Smart Energy Buildings, SEB) located in Savona, Italy. In particular, the focus of the present paper concerns the modeling of the ground source water-to-water heat pump (WHP) and the air-to-air heat pump (AHP) installed in the SEB building. To model the WHP in EnergyPlus, the Curve Fit Method was selected. Starting from manufacturer data, this model allows to estimate the COP of the HP for different temperature working conditions. The procedure was extended to the AHP. This unit is a part of the air-handling unit and it is working as a heat recovery system. The results obtained show that the HP performance in EnergyPlus can closely follow manufacturer data if proper input recasting is performed for EnergyPlus simulations.
