Modeling Artificial Ground Freezing for Construction of Two Tunnels of a Metro Station in Napoli (Italy)
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: artificial ground freezing, GEO heating, heat transfer, metro in Napoli, numerical modeling, underground station
An artificial ground freezing (AGF) technique in the horizontal direction has been employed in Naples (Italy), in order to ensure the stability and waterproofing of soil during the excavation of two tunnels in a real underground station. The artificial freezing technique consists of letting a coolant fluid, with a temperature lower than the surrounding ground, circulate inside probes positioned along the perimeter of the gallery. In this paper, the authors propose an efficient numerical model to analyze heat transfer during the whole excavation process for which this AGF technique was used. The model takes into account the water phase change process, and has been employed to analyze phenomena occurring in three cross sections of the galleries. The aim of the work is to analyze the thermal behavior of the ground during the freezing phases, to optimize the freezing process, and to evaluate the thickness of frozen wall obtained. The steps to realize the entire excavation of the tunnels, a... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Halbach permanent magnet array, magnetic field analysis, mathematical model
Analysis of Halbach array placed in open space by using finite element method involves substantial consumption of memory, time, and cost. To address this problem, development of a mathematical modeling and analytic analysis method for Halbach array can be a solution, but research on this topic is currently insufficient. Therefore, a novel mathematical modeling and analytic analysis method for Halbach array in open space is proposed in this study, which is termed as the Ampere model and the Biot−Savart law (AB method). The proposed AB method can analyze the Halbach array rapidly and accurately with minimal consumption of memory. The usefulness of the AB method in terms of accuracy and memory and time consumption is verified by comparing the AB method with finite element method in this paper.

Study on a Dynamic Numerical Model of an Underground Air Tunnel System for Cooling Applications—Experimental Validation and Multidimensional Parametrical Analysis
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cooling capacity, dynamic model, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, underground air tunnel
The underground air tunnel system shows promising potentials for reducing energy consumption of buildings and for improving indoor thermal comfort, whereas the existing dynamic models using the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) method show computational complexity and are user-unfriendly for parametrical analysis. In this study, a dynamic numerical model was developed with the on-site experimental calibration. Compared to the traditional CFD method with high computational complexity, the mathematical model on the MATLAB/SIMULINK platform is time-saving in terms of the real-time thermal performance prediction. The experimental validation results indicated that the maximum absolute relative deviation was 3.18% between the model-driven results and the data from the on-site experiments. Parametrical analysis results indicated that, with the increase of the tube length, the outlet temperature decreases with an increase of the cooling capacity whereas the increasing/decreasing magnitude slow... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: automotive headlight, Computational Fluid Dynamics, finned plate, junction temperature, laminar flow, LED chip, liquid cooling
This research work presents a comparative thermal performance assessment of the laminar flow cooling blocks produced for automotive headlight assembly using a high power Light Emitting Diode (LED) chip. A three-dimensional numerical model with conjugate heat transfer in solid and fluid domains was used. Laminar flow was considered in the present analysis. The validation of the numerical model was realized by using the measured data from the test rig. It was observed that substantial temperature variations were occurred around the LED chip owing to volumetric heat generation. The cooling board with lower height performs better thermal performance but higher pressure drop for the same mass flow rates. The cooling board with the finned cover plate performs better thermal performance but results in an increased pressure drop for the same mass flow rates. Increasing the power of the LED results in higher temperature values for the same mass flow rates. The junction temperature is highly dep... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: destruction, dielectric barrier discharge, ozone, surface discharge, temperature
Ozone, due to its high reactivity cannot be stockpiled, and thus requires to be generated on-demand. The paper reports on laboratory studies of O3 generation in a volume dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) tubular flow-through system with a coaxial-spiral electrode arrangement. Its performance is experimentally verified and compared to a commercial surface DBD O3 source fitted with a three-electrode floating supply arrangement. The presented volume DBD design is capable of steadily producing up to 4180 ppmv O3 at 1 Nl/min unprocessed atmospheric air intake and 10 kV 1.6 kHz sinusoidal high voltage supply corresponding to 67 g/kWh O3 production yield increasing to 93 g/kWh at 100 Nl/min air intake. The effects of high voltage supply tuning are also investigated and discussed together with finite element method simulation results.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: choke, Eddy current losses, FEM method, laminated transformer sheet, Laplace’s transformation
The following article presents a computation procedure that enables us to simulate the dynamic states of electric machines with a laminated magnetic core, with direct consideration of the eddy current losses. The presented approach enables a significant reduction of the simulation process computational complexity. The verification of the obtained data correctness is based on a detailed balance of energy and power in the investigated system. The correctness of the obtained results was also confirmed by comparing them with the results included in norms that describe the losses in laminated sheets. The presented approach is based on expressing the equivalent permeability of transformer metal sheets by using RC or RL circuits. The impedances of these circuits are treated as the transmittance of Infinite Impulse Response filters (IIR) of the Laplace s variable. March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, gyrotron resonator, hydraulic test, mini-channels, pressure drop, Raschig rings
The design and manufacturing of different full-size mock-ups of the resonance cavity of gyrotrons, relevant for fusion applications, were performed according to two different cooling strategies. The first one relies on mini-channels, which are very promising in the direction of increasing the heat transfer in the heavily loaded cavity, but which could face an excessively large pressure drop, while the second one adopts the solution of Raschig rings, already successfully used in European operating gyrotrons. The mock-ups, manufactured with conventional techniques, were hydraulically characterized at the Thales premises, using water at room temperature. The measured pressure drop data were used to validate the corresponding numerical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, developed with the commercial software STAR-CCM+ (Siemens PLM Software, Plano TX, U.S.A.) and resulting in excellent agreement with the test results. March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: capacitance, Energy Storage, ESR, experimental validation, frequency model, Modelling, supercapacitor
Supercapacitors, one of the most promising energy storage technologies for high power density industrial applications, exchange the energy mostly through power electronic converters, operating under high frequency components due to the commutation. The high frequency produces important effects on the performance of the supercapacitors in relation to their capacitance, inductance and internal resistance (ESR). These parameters are fundamental to evaluate the efficiency of this energy storage system. The aim of the paper is to obtain an accurate model of two supercapacitors connected in series (functional and extrapolated unit) to represent the frequency effects for a wide range of frequencies. The methodology is based on the definition of an appropriate equivalent electric circuit with voltage dependance, obtaining their parameters from experimental tests, carried out by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and the use of specific software tools such as EC-Lab® and Stat... Noise Immunity Analysis and Improvement of dq Frame Based Open-Loop Phase Detection Scheme
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coordinate transformation, noise immunity, open-loop phase detection (OPD), voltage phase
To improve the noise immunity of a dq frame based open-loop phase detection (OPD) under high-frequency noise grid conditions, this paper develops a detailed model to quantitatively evaluate the phase detection error and noise immunity. It is found that the OPD behaves differently in terms of noise immunity when the dq frame is in different angle positions with the grid voltage. When the grid voltage coincides with the d axis, the high-frequency noise has the smallest impact on the phase detection accuracy, and the OPD thus has the strongest noise immunity. Inspired by this conclusion, an improved OPD algorithm is proposed in this paper, which can effectively reduce the phase detection error by fine-tuning the rotation angle of the dq frame to ensure that the angle between the voltage vector and d axis is always close to 0. The improved OPD algorithm has a fast and precise character to detect the phase information with less error and is flexible for application. Under heavy noise grid c... [more]

Investigating the System Behaviors of a 10 kW Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Prototype Using Plunger Pump and Centrifugal Pump
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: centrifugal pump, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), plunger pump, pressure drop, system generating efficiency, temperature utilization rate
Based on a 10-kW organic Rankine cycle (ORC) experimental prototype, the system behaviors using a plunger pump and centrifugal pump have been investigated. The heat input is in the range of 45 kW to 82 kW. The temperature utilization rate is defined to appraise heat source utilization. The detailed components’ behaviors with the varying heat input are discussed, while the system generating efficiency is examined. The exergy destruction for the four components is addressed finally. Results indicated that the centrifugal pump owns a relatively higher mass flow rate and pump isentropic efficiency, but more power consumption than the plunger pump. The evaporator pressure drops are in the range of 0.45−0.65 bar, demonstrating that the pressure drop should be considered for the ORC simulation. The electrical power has a small difference using a plunger pump and a centrifugal pump, indicating that the electric power is insensitive on the pump types. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: COSS hysteresis, COSS intrinsic energy losses, LLC resonant converter, soft-switching, Superjunction MOSFET, zero voltage switching
Switching losses of power transistors usually are the most relevant energy losses in high-frequency power converters. Soft-switching techniques allow a reduction of these losses, but even under soft-switching conditions, these losses can be significant, especially at light load and very high switching frequency. In this paper, hysteresis and energy losses are shown during the charge and discharge of the output capacitance (COSS) of commercial high voltage Superjunction MOSFETs. Moreover, a simple methodology to include information about these two phenomena in datasheets using a commercial system is suggested to manufacturers. Simulation models including COSS hysteresis and a figure of merit considering these intrinsic energy losses are also proposed. Simulation and experimental measurements using an LLC resonant converter have been performed to validate the proposed mechanism and the usefulness of the proposed simulation models.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: collapsing cavity model, validation experiment, water hammer with multipoint collapsing, wave velocity of water hammer
The traditional discrete vapor cavity model (DVCM) is widely used in water hammer simulation. Water column separation in pipelines is usually predicted with this model. Nevertheless, the main weaknesses of this model consist of numerical instability and nonconvergence. Regarding the weaknesses of the traditional model, this paper discusses an improved method. The new method uses a new water hammer velocity formula, a new cavity model, and a floating grid method. Through simulations to test the effects of the new model, an experimental platform can be established to realize a water hammer with multipoint collapsing. The numerical simulation was programmed in C++ and the test was carried out with an actual pipeline model built in the laboratory. After certain modelling and calibration, the parameters in the simulation calculation were consistent with the measured parameters in the test. The numerical simulation results were compared with the experimental results. For the hydraulic transi... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, friction factor, Nusselt number, solar air heater, solar collector
In this study, a two-dimensional CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis was performed to investigate the heat-transfer and fluid-friction characteristics in a solar air heater having a transverse triangular block at the bottom of the air duct. The Reynolds number, block height (e), pitch (P), and length (l) were chosen as design parameters. The results are validated by comparing the Nusselt number predicted by simulation with available experimental results. Renormalization-group (RNG) k - ε model with enhanced wall-treatment was selected as the most appropriate turbulence model. From the results, it was found that the presence of a transverse triangular block produces a higher Nusselt number than that of smooth air duct. The enhancement in Nusselt number varied from 1.19 to 3.37, according to the geometric conditions investigated. However, the use of transverse triangular block also results in significantly higher friction losses. The thermohydraulic performance (THPP) w... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coherent structures, pre-multiplied wind velocity spectrum, spatial correlation coefficient field, stability, turbulent boundary layer
Coherent structures in the turbulent boundary layer were investigated under different stability conditions. Qualitative analyses of the flow field, spatial correlation coefficient field and pre-multiplied wind velocity spectrum showed that the dominant turbulent eddy structure changed from small-scale motions to large- and very-large-scale motions and then to thermal plumes as the stability changed from strong stable to neutral and then to strong unstable. A quantitative analysis of the size characteristics of the three-dimensional turbulent eddy structure based on the spatial correlation coefficient field showed that under near-neutral stability, the streamwise, wall-normal and spanwise extents remained constant at approximately 0.3 δ , 0.1 δ and 0.2 δ ( δ , boundary layer height), respectively, while for other conditions, the extent in each direction varied in a log-linear manner with stability; only the spanwise extent under stable conditions was also independent o... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: harmonic state-space, modular multilevel converter, participation factor, small-signal model, stability analysis
The stability of Modular multilevel converter (MMC) itself is the premise of analyzing the stability of MMC cascading with other cells, so this paper addressed the small-signal stability of MMC with dc voltage control mode which is the common operation mode of grid-side MMC in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. Two-Stage Radial Turbine for a Small Waste Heat Recovery Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Plant
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), radial turbine, turbine design, waste heat recovery (WHR)
Looking at the waste heat potential made available by industry, it can be noted that there are many sectors where small scale (< 100 kWe) organic Rankine cycle (ORC) plants could be applied to improve the energy efficiency. Such plants are quite challenging from the techno-economic point of view: the temperature of the primary heat source poses a low cutoff to the system thermodynamic efficiency. Therefore, high-performance components are needed, but, at the same time, they have to be at low cost as possible to assure a reasonable payback time. In this paper, the design of a two-stage radial in-flow turbine for small ORC industrial plants is presented. Compared to commonly applied mono-stage expanders (both volumetric and dynamic), this novel turbine enables plants to exploit higher pressure ratios than conventional plants. Thus, the theoretical limit to the cycle efficiency is enhanced with undoubted benefits on the overall ORC plant performance. The design process involved 1D/2D m... [more]
