Effects of Tip Clearance Size on Energy Performance and Pressure Fluctuation of a Tidal Propeller Turbine
Bao Ngoc Tran, Haechang Jeong, Jun-Ho Kim, Jin-Soon Park, Changjo Yang
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), pressure fluctuation, propeller turbine, tip-clearance size (TCS), tip-leakage vortex (TLV)
Unavoidable tip clearance between blade tip and casing shroud plays an important role in the performance and characteristics of a tidal propeller turbine. In this work, the tip-leakage vortex (TLV) induced in the end-wall region was numerically illustrated by using the shear-stress transport (SST) k−ω turbulence model at various flow conditions and different tip-clearance sizes (TCSs). The swirling strength criterion was employed to visualize the tip-leakage vortex trajectory and investigate vortex evolution according to clearance size change. Although TLV occurs in both design and off-design conditions, vortex intensity develops strongly under excess flow rate with increased tip gap. The extreme influence of TCS on the turbine’s generated power and efficiency was predicted in steady simulations for four TCS cases, namely, δ = 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, and 0.75%. With the extension of the tip gap, turbine performance was drastically reduced because of vigorous turbulent leakage flow combined wi... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: numerical simulation, OpenFOAM, pressurizer relief tank, thermal-hydraulics, turbulence model
Due to the complex geometry and turbulent flow characteristics, it is hard to simulate the process of steam dumping of the pressurizer relief tank (PRT). In this study, we develop a compressible fluid solver PRTFOAM to numerically study the turbulent flow dynamics from a PRT. The PRTFOAM is implemented based on the OpenFOAM and designed to be capable of integrating various turbulence models. Two representative Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) models and a Smagorinsky−Lilly SGS model based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) are coupled and tested with PRTFOAM. The case of a flow past a circular cylinder (Re = 3900) is tested and analyzed comprehensively as a benchmark case. Then, the turbulent steam dumping process in the full geometry of a PRT is analyzed and compared with ANSYS CFX and literature reports. In addition, we tested the WALE model based on the PRT steam dumping process. The results show that SST k-ω model and Smagorinsky−Lilly SGS model-based LES approach are more approp... [more]
An Enhanced Vertical Ground Heat Exchanger Model for Whole-Building Energy Simulation
Matt S. Mitchell, Jeffrey D. Spitler
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: g-Function, ground heat exchanger, ground source heat pump, whole-building energy simulation
This paper presents an enhanced vertical ground heat exchanger (GHE) model for whole-building energy simulation (WBES). WBES programs generally have computational constraints that affect the development and implementation of component simulation sub-models. WBES programs require models that execute quickly and efficiently due to how the programs are utilized by design engineers. WBES programs also require models to be formulated so their performance can be determined from boundary conditions set by upstream components and environmental conditions. The GHE model developed during this work utilizes an existing response factor model and extends its capabilities to accurately and robustly simulate at timesteps that are shorter than the GHE transit time. This was accomplished by developing a simplified dynamic borehole model and then exercising that model to generate exiting fluid temperature response factors. This approach blends numerical and analytical modeling methods. The existing resp... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: annular seal, Computational Fluid Dynamics, dynamic coefficients, fluid forces, nonlinear dynamic model, static eccentricity
Annular seals of turbomachinery usually suffer from various degrees of eccentricities and disturbances due to the rotor−stator misalignment and radial loads, while the discussion of annular seal under both large static eccentricities and dynamic disturbances is relatively limited. In this paper, the applicability of linear assumption and reliability of nonlinear dynamic model for eccentric annular seals under large eccentricities and disturbances is discussed based on the investigation of seals with various rotor motions through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). After the validation of transient CFD methods by comparison with experimental and bulk theory results, the dynamic behaviors of annular seal are analyzed by adopting both direct transient simulations and the nonlinear Muszynska model. The results show that the nonlinear dynamic model based on rotor circular whirls around seal center can predict the fluid excitations of different types of rotor motions well under small static... Ziba Rostami, Sajad Najafi Ravadanegh, Navid Taghizadegan Kalantari, Josep M. Guerrero, Juan C. Vasquez
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: imperialist competitive algorithm, load frequency control, multiple microgrid clusters modeling, regional demand response programs, renewable energy resources and load uncertainties
Preserving the frequency stability of multiple microgrid clusters is a serious challenge. This work presents a dynamic model of multiple microgrid clusters with different types of distributed energy resources (DERs) and energy storage systems (ESSs) that was used to examine the load frequency control (LFC) of microgrids. The classical proportional integral derivative (PID) controllers were designed to tune the frequency of microgrids. Furthermore, an imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) was proposed to investigate the frequency deviations of microgrids by considering renewable energy resources (RERs) and their load uncertainties. The simulation results confirmed the performance of the optimized PID controllers under different disturbances. Furthermore, the frequency control of the microgrids was evaluated by applying regional demand response programs (RDRPs). The simulation results showed that applying the RDRPs caused the damping of frequency fluctuations.

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: experimental base modelling, hybrid sources, real time energy management system, sizing
Hybridization of sources is spreading worldwide by utilizing renewable sources and storage units as standard parts of every grid. The conjunction of energy source and storage type open the door to reshaping the sustainability and robustness of the mains while improving system parameters such as efficiency and fuel consumption. The solution fits existing networks as well as new ones. The study proposes the creation of an accurate optimal sizing procedure for setting the required rating of each type of source. The first step is to model the storage and energy sources by using real experimental results for creating the generic database. Then, data on the mission profile, system constraints, and the minimization target function are inserted. The mission profile is then analyzed to determine the minimum and maximum energy source rating. Next, the real time energy management system controller is used to find the set of solutions for each available energy source and the optimal compatible sto... [more]

Keywords: electrothermal simulations, nonlinear thermal effects, parasitics, power module, silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, SPICE modeling
In this paper, an advanced electrothermal simulation strategy is applied to a 3.3 kV silicon carbide MOSFET power module. The approach is based on a full circuital representation of the module, where use is made of the thermal equivalent of the Ohm’s law. The individual transistors are described with subcircuits, while the dynamic power-temperature feedback is accounted for through an equivalent thermal network enriched with controlled sources enabling nonlinear thermal effects. A synchronous step-up DC-DC converter and a single-phase inverter, both incorporating the aforementioned power module, are simulated. Good accuracy was ensured by considering electromagnetic effects due to parasitics, which were experimentally extracted in a preliminary stage. Low CPU times are needed, and no convergence issues are encountered in spite of the high switching frequencies. The impact of some key parameters is effortlessly quantified. The analysis witnesses the efficiency and versatility of the app... [more]

Bo-Hye Choi, Seung-Yeong Song
March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: curtain wall, thermal bridge, thermal insulation, truss-shaped insulation frame
The purpose of this study was to compare insulation performance between a base case that applied the existing steel pipe frame and an alternative case that reduced thermal bridging by applying a truss-shaped insulation frame (TIF) to a back frame type curtain wall. Insulation performance was compared by obtaining the effective U-factor and the lowest indoor surface temperature through a three-dimensional steady-state heat transfer simulation. In addition, mock-up tests were performed to compare the U-factors of the base case and alternative case. The simulation results showed that the effective U-factor of the alternative case was 36% lower than in the base case, a significant heat loss reduction. The lowest indoor surface temperature of the alternative case was 0.5 °C higher than in the base case, showing that the surface condensation risk also decreased. In the mock-up test results, the alternative case U-factor was 33% lower than in the base case, confirming the associated large hea... [more]

Keywords: CFD simulation, heat island effect, porous media, wind field
The urban heat island (UHI) effect resulted from urbanization as well as industrialization has become a major environmental problem. UHI effect aggravates global warming and endangers human health. Thus, mitigating the UHI effect has become a primary task to address these challenges. This paper verifies the feasibility of a three-dimensional turbulent porous media model. Using this model, the authors simulate the urban canopy wind-heat environment. The temperature and flow field over a city with a concentric circular structure are presented. The impact of three factors (i.e., anthropogenic heat, ambient crosswind speed, and porosity in the central area) on turbulent flow and heat transfer in the central business district of a simplified city model with a concentric circular structure were analyzed. It is found that the three-dimensional turbulent porous media model is suitable for estimating the UHI effect. The UHI effect could be mitigated by reducing the artificial heat and improving... Keywords: low pressure turbine, Machine Learning, multi-objective optimization, transition, turbulence modeling
Existing Reynolds Averaged Navier−Stokes-based transition models do not accurately predict separation induced transition for low pressure turbines. Therefore, in this paper, a novel framework based on computational fluids dynamics (CFD) driven machine learning coupled with multi-expression and multi-objective optimization is explored to develop models which can improve the transition prediction for the T106A low pressure turbine at an isentropic exit Reynolds number of Re2is=100,000. Model formulations are proposed for the transfer and laminar eddy viscosity terms of the laminar kinetic energy transition model using seven non-dimensional pi groups. The multi-objective optimization approach makes use of cost functions based on the suction-side wall-shear stress and the pressure coefficient. A family of solutions is thus developed, whose performance is assessed using Pareto analysis and in terms of physical characteristics of separated-flow transition. Two models are found which bring th... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computational fluid dynamics (CFD), energy simulation (ES), open ceiling space, optimum location
The number of houses with large, continuous spaces has increased recently. With improvements in insulation performance, it has become possible to efficiently air condition such spaces using a single air conditioner. However, the air conditioning efficiency depends on the placement of the air conditioner. The only way to determine the optimal placement of such air conditioners is to conduct an experiment or use computational fluid dynamic analysis. However, because the analysis is performed over a limited period, it is difficult to consider non-stationarity effects without using an energy simulation. Therefore, in this study, energy simulations and computational fluid dynamics analyses were coupled to develop a thermal environment analysis method that considers non-stationarity effects, and various air conditioner arrangements were investigated to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method. The accuracy verification results generally followed the experimental results. A case s... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aquifer drainage, influence function, land subsidence, mining, Modelling
Land subsidence caused by groundwater withdrawal induced by mining is a relatively unknown phenomenon. This is primarily due to the small scale of such movements compared to the land subsidence caused by deposit extraction. Nonetheless, the environmental impact of drainage-related land subsidence remains underestimated. The research was carried out in the “Bogdanka” coal mine in Poland. First, the historical impact of mining on land subsidence and groundwater head changes was investigated. The outcomes of these studies were used to construct the influence method model. With field data, our model was successfully calibrated and validated. Finally, it was used for land subsidence estimation for 2030. As per the findings, the field of mining exploitation has the greatest land subsidence. In 2014, the maximum value of the phenomenon was 0.313 cm. However, this value will reach 0.364 m by 2030. The spatial extent of land subsidence caused by mining-induced drainage extends up to 20 km beyon... [more]

March 29, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: LED, light sources, lighting, lighting simulation, luminaires, photometry, visualization
Currently, built LED luminaires are usually multi-source. This causes a large number of photometric and simulation problems connected with computer lighting visualization. This paper highlights three key issues with these luminaires: a change in the traditional understanding of the coordinate system for these luminaires, the photometric test distance of these luminaires and the need for the photometric separation of a single LED in the computer lighting simulation process. An optical model of a linear LED luminaire used in floodlighting was formulated on this basis. The presented conclusions refer to practical applications. Thus, it is necessary to address the crucial points that specify the coordinate system for the multi-source LED luminaire by its designer and present the information in a datasheet. The other important points concern determining the appropriate photometric test distance for the multi-source LED luminaires of a given type and creating photometric files for the differ... [more]

Keywords: charge transport, DC breakdown, hexagonal boron nitride, micro/nanocomposite, orientation, polyethylene, trap characteristics
In order to improve the thermal conductivity and the insulation properties of polyethylene (PE) used as cable insulation under DC stress, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and inorganic particles have been considered as micro-filler and nano-filler, respectively. As a 2D material, the orientation of h-BN possibly affects the insulation properties of the polymer. It is important to understand the influence of the filler orientation on the insulation performance of the polymer. In this work, a numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the effect of orientation of micro-h-BN on charge transport and DC breakdown of PE-based micro/nano-composites and a comparison between the simulation result and previous literature data has been conducted. The h-BN was designated to be parallel, perpendicular to the normal sample surface vector (the direction of electric field in this work) or randomly distributed in the matrix, and the charge transport behavior and DC breakdown strength in the s... Keywords: Bayesian algorithm, gasoline surrogate, Machine Learning, stratified fuel, surrogate fuel
Many researchers in industry and academia are showing an increasing interest in the definition of fuel surrogates for Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation applications. This need is mainly driven by the necessity of the engine research community to anticipate the effects of new gasoline formulations and combustion modes (e.g., Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, Spark Assisted Compression Ignition) to meet future emission regulations. Since those solutions strongly rely on the tailored mixture distribution, the simulation and accurate prediction of the mixture formation will be mandatory. Focusing purely on the definition of surrogates to emulate liquid phase and liquid-vapor equilibrium of gasolines, the following target properties are considered in this work: density, Reid vapor pressure, chemical macro-composition and volatility. A set of robust algorithms has been developed for the prediction of volatility and Reid vapor pressure. A Bayesian optimization algorithm based on... [more]

Keywords: CBM reservoir, numerical simulation, production, seepage, ultrasonic waves
The matrix pores of a coalbed methane (CBM) reservoir are mostly nanoscale pores, with tiny pore throats and poor connectivity, which belong to the category of low−permeability gas reservoirs. The matrix particles and organic pore surfaces adsorb a large amount of CBM. These problems are the main reasons that limit the increase in CBM production. At present, the primary measure to increase CBM production is hydraulic fracturing. However, due to the technical characteristics and geological conditions of CBM reservoirs, applying this technology to CBM exploitation still has some key issues that need to be resolved. Therefore, it is essential to develop a new technology that can effectively increase the production of CBM. This paper proposed a method that uses ultrasonic waves to improve the seepage characteristics of CBM reservoir and theoretically verifies the feasibility of this idea using numerical simulation. In this paper, we firstly coupled the temperature, pressure, and seepage pa... [more]

Keywords: accidental release, Carbon Dioxide, CO2 pipeline, CO2 transport, dispersion modeling, experimental modeling
Carbon capture and storage is considered an effective mitigation strategy to reduce the most challenging emissions from heavy industries and gas processing. The safe transport of carbon dioxide via pipelines is an important aspect for developing large-scale Carbon Capture and Storage projects. Dispersion modeling for heavy gas such as carbon dioxide is considerably different from natural gas. The set up for modeling simulations is more challenging than conventional natural gas pipeline for several reasons, such as the differences in thermodynamics that must be considered. Moreover, when the carbon dioxide is transported in dense or liquid phase, the rapid phase changing, and possible consequent formation of solids should be considered. Finally, the equation of state required for accurate prediction of parameters is generally different than the ones applicable for natural gas. The main scope of this comprehensive review is to identify the most important parameters, critical events, suit... [more]

The presented paper, which is the first of two parts, shows the results of numerical investigations of a heat exchanger channel in the form of a cylindrical tube with a thin insert. The insert, placed concentrically in the pipe, uses the phenomenon of thermal radiation absorption to intensify the heat transfer between the pipe wall and the gas. Eight geometric configurations of the insert size were numerically investigated using CFD software, varying its diameter from 20% to 90% of the pipe diameter and obtaining the thermal-flow characteristics for each case. The tests were conducted for a range of numbers Re = 5000−100,000 and a constant temperature difference between the channel wall and the average gas temperature of ∆T = 100 °C. The results show that the highest increase in the Nu number was observed for the inserts with diameters of 0.3 and 0.4 of the channel diameter, while the highest flow resistance was noted for the inserts with diameters of 0.6−0.7 of the channel diameter. Keywords: dewatering optimisation, finite difference method, flow model, groundwater, hydrogeological forecast, water recirculation
The layout of the dewatering system in open-cast mining must be adapted to mining assumptions and to the size of expected inflows, which, in turn, depend on natural conditions and the operation of other mines and groundwater intakes, affecting the arrangement of the hydrodynamic field. This case study analyses possible dewatering solutions related to a change in the mining drainage system: decommissioning by flooding of a depleted deposit and dewatering of a new one located in the vicinity. As part of numerical modelling, a solution was sought to minimise the environmental impact of drainage. Forecast calculations for two drainage alternatives were made. One of the solutions follows the classic approach: independent dewatering of the new excavation. The second solution assumes the recirculation of waters from dewatering of the new mine through their discharge into a closed and flooded pit located in the vicinity. The results of the forecasts for both variants point to the modification... [more]

Keywords: rail, stability, vehicle dynamics, vehicle-track, wheel–rail
This article presents a definition of stochastic technical stability that was applied to test a mathematical model of a passenger railroad car crossing a turnout with the speed exceeding 160 km/h. Stability defined in this way allows testing of Lyapunov’s stability with disturbances from the track and for a nonlinear system. The STS test of a nonlinear mathematical model of a passenger car was carried out by perturbing the motion of the mathematical model with irregularities originating from the track gauge change and wheelset motion in the direction transverse to the track axis. The main aim of this paper was to determine the influence of various factors and technical conditions on the assessment of the stability of various means of transport. The analysis presented can be used to assess the dynamics of electric vehicles, whose mechanical parameters differ from those of combustion vehicles at present. The area of stable motion in the Lyapunov sense was defined using the STS method. Si... [more]
