April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aging, capacity fade, incremental capacity, Li-ion, resistance rise, state of health
The estimation of lithium ion capacity fade and impedance rise on real application is always a challenging work due to the associated complexity. This work envisages the study of the battery charging profile indicators (CPI) to estimate battery health indicators (capacity and resistance, BHI), for high energy density lithium-ion batteries. Different incremental capacity (IC) parameters of the charging profile will be studied and compared to the battery capacity and resistance, in order to identify the data with the best correlation. In this sense, the constant voltage (CV) step duration, the magnitudes of the IC curve peaks, and the position of these peaks will be studied. Additionally, the behaviour of the IC curve will be modeled to determine if there is any correlation between the IC model parameters and the capacity and resistance. Results show that the developed IC parameter calculation and the correlation strategy are able to evaluate the SOH with less than 1% mean error for capa... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFL, harmonic distortion, incandescent lamps, LED lamps, low voltage residential grid, neutral current, probabilistic assessment
In the last decade, mainly due to political incentives towards energy efficiency, the share of lamps with power electronic interfaces, like Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps, has significantly increased in the residential sector. Their massive use might have a substantial impact on harmonic currents and, consequently, on the current flowing in the neutral conductor. This paper analyzes the impact of modern energy-efficient lighting technologies on the neutral conductor current by using a synthetic Low Voltage residential grid. Different load scenarios reflecting the transition from incandescent lamps, via CFL, to LED lamps are compared concerning the neutral conductor current at different points in the network. The inherent randomness related to the use of lighting devices by each residential customer is considered employing a Monte Carlo simulation. Obtained results show that the use of CFL has a greater impact on the neutral conductor current of Low... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air arc plasma, fast switch, magnetohydrodynamic simulations, Thomson actuator
This paper is devoted to investigating the effects of high-speed elongation of arcs inside ultra-fast switches (ucontact≈ 5−80 m/s), through a 2-D time-dependent model, in Cartesian coordinates. Two air arcs in series, one between a stationary anode and a moving cathode and the other between a stationary cathode and a moving anode in the arc chamber, are considered. A variable speed experimental setup through a Thomson drive actuator is designed to support this study. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) equations system is solved for fluid velocity, pressure, temperature, and electric potential, as well as the magnetic vector potential. Electron emission mechanisms on the contact surface and induced current density due to magnetic field changes are also considered to describe the arc root formation, arc bending, lengthening, and calculating the arc current density, as well as the contact temperatures, in a better way. Data processing techniques are utilized to derive instantaneous cor... [more]

Keywords: Component Connection Method, power electronics-based systems, stability analysis, state-space methods, virtual synchronous generators
In modern power electronics-based power systems, accurate modeling is necessary in order to analyze stability and the interaction between the different elements, which are connected to it. State space modeling seems a valid approach to study the modes of a certain system and their correlation with its states. Unfortunately, this approach may require complicated calculations and it is difficult to model advanced or emerging control techniques for grid-tied converters, such as cascaded controllers (e.g., voltage and current) and virtual synchronous generators (VSGs). Moreover, this approach does not allow an easy reconfiguration of the modeled system by adding, removing of modifying certain elements. To solve such problems, this paper presents a step-by-step approach to the converter modeling based on the Component Connection Method (CCM). The CCM is explained in detail and a practical example is given, by modeling one exemplary VSG model available in the literature. The obtained model i... [more]

Keywords: coupling vibration, energy-based vibration model, high-speed elevator, precise integration, traction system
Vibration of a high-speed elevator is one of the major factors contributing to a safe, stable and comfortable ride. Vibration control and systematic optimization rely on the establishment of an accurate and reliable model. An energy-based vibration model (EVM) is proposed in this paper to describe the multi-directional coupling properties of high-speed elevators. After analyzing the structural and kinematic characteristics, a combination of the kinematic energy, elastic potential energy and virtual works is implemented to describe the vibrational characteristics. The Gaussian precise integration method is implemented to obtain accurate solutions because of the infinite degrees of freedom and the time-varying parameters. An example study is conducted using the KLK2 high-speed elevator. EVM is established to obtain the Max(Pk)/Pk and A95 indices of the X, Y, Z axis vibrational acceleration through simulations. A comparison is proposed between the proposed EVM method, conventional methods... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 2D piston pump, backflow, leakage, volumetric losses
Axial piston pumps with high rotational speeds are required in many fields to increase the power-to-weight ratio. However, three main sliding friction pairs in the pump restrict the increase in rotational speed. To solve this problem, we propose a 2D piston pump with a balanced force that contains a sliding friction pair. Firstly, the mechanical structure and working principle of the pump are described. Then, the pump volumetric efficiency is studied by mathematical modeling, and volumetric losses containing backflow and leakage are analyzed and discussed from the perspectives of load pressure and rotational speed. A test bench that verifies the mathematical model is built to measure the volumetric efficiency of the tested pump. We have found that the increase in rotational speed can help to increase the pump volumetric efficiency, and the mathematical model is consistent with the tested data for 1000 rpm but demonstrates a remarkable difference from the tested data for 3000 rpm. Thus,... [more]

This paper reports the application of RC dynamic models for assessing thermal performance of buildings from in-situ tests (obtaining the U value for the walls, and the UA value and gA value for the whole buildings). The following aspects which are relevant to this approach have been systematically analyzed: The effect of the solar radiation on the heat flux through the opaque walls versus the performance of the models including this effect, the optimum number of nodes required to represent the thermal systems, the assignment of inputs and outputs and the length of the test period. Additionally, several options modelling relevant effects using unmeasured variables were studied to evaluate the feasibility to reduce the cost and intrusiveness of the measurement devices required to obtain accurate results. Data series recorded under different experimental conditions were considered to analyze the robustness and validity of the results. The performance of the models for each of these differ... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC circuit breaker, DC grids, fault protection, local action, local detection
Fast detection and isolation of direct current (DC) faults are key issues for DC grids. Therefore, it is very necessary to study the fault protection principle for DC grids. This paper firstly presents the main difficulties in DC fault protection. Then, a local protection and local action strategy for isolating the DC faults is proposed. To illustrate the performance of the proposed protection strategy, a four-terminal DC grid with the hybrid high voltage direct current (HVDC) circuit breakers (HVDC CBs) is constructed in the time-domain simulation software PSCAD/EMTDC as the test system. The systematical comparison between the ordinary protection strategy and the proposed strategy is carried out. The protection selectivity of the proposed local detection and local action strategy is thoroughly studied through complete DC line fault scanning of the test system. The simulation results show that the proposed strategy is of high protection selectivity and speed. In addition, the current r... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural network, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, estimator, soot concentration, soot emissions
Soot formation in combustion systems is a growing concern due to its adverse environmental and health effects. It is considered to be a tremendously complicated phenomenon which includes multiphase flow, thermodynamics, heat transfer, chemical kinetics, and particle dynamics. Although various numerical approaches have been developed for the detailed modeling of soot evolution, most industrial device simulations neglect or rudimentarily approximate soot formation due to its high computational cost. Developing accurate, easy to use, and computationally inexpensive numerical techniques to predict or estimate soot concentrations is a major objective of the combustion industry. In the present study, a supervised Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique is applied to predict the soot concentration fields in ethylene/air laminar diffusion flames accurately with a low computational cost. To gather validated data, eight different flames with various equivalence ratios, inlet velocities, and bu... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, demand response, energy consumption optimization, multi-objective model, wastewater treatment, water-energy nexus
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are known to be one of the most energy-intensive industrial sectors. In this work, demand response was applied to the biological phase of wastewater treatment to reduce plant electricity cost, considering that the daily peak in flowrate typically coincides with the maximum electricity price. Compressed air storage system, composed of a compressor and an air storage tank, was proposed to allow energy cost reduction. A multi-objective modelling approach was applied by analyzing different scenarios (with and without anaerobic digestion, AD), considering both plant characteristics (in terms of treated flowrate and influent chemical oxygen demand, COD, concentration) and storage system properties (volume, air pressure), together with the current Italian market economic conditions. The results highlight that air tank volume has a strong positive influence on the obtainable economic savings, with a less significant impact held by air pressure, COD concentra... [more]

Keywords: distributed converters, large photovoltaic fields, state-space average modeling
Distributed power converters represent a technical solution to improve the performance of large or utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) plants. Unfortunately, evaluation of the yield obtained in large PV fields by using distributed converters is a difficult task because of recurring partial unavailability, inaccuracy of power analyzers, operating constraints imposed by the Power Plant Controller and so on. To overcome such issues in real operating scenarios, a new modeling strategy has been introduced and validated in terms of computational complexity and accuracy. This approach is based on the state-space averaging technique which is applied to large PV plants with multiple conversion stages by performing some elaborations in order to get a final integrated model. The new modeling strategy has been tested in MatLab Simulink environment using data coming from a 300 MW PV plant located in Brazil representing the case study of this work. In this plant, one subfield is equipped with central in... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, convective mass transport, current distribution, model validation, strip cell, vanadium redox flow battery
The impact of convection on electrochemical performance, performance distribution, and local pressure drop is investigated via simple strip cell architecture, a cell with a single straight channel. Various channel depths (0.25, 0.5, 1, 2.5 mm) and flow rates (10−50 mL min−1 cm−2) are employed to induce a wide range of electrolyte velocities within the channel and electrode. Computational flow simulation is utilized to assess velocity and pressure distributions; experimentally measured in situ current distribution is quantified for the cell. Although the total current in the cell is directly proportional to electrolyte velocity in the electrode, there is no correlation detected between electrolyte velocity in the channel and the total current. It is found that the maximum achievable current is limited by diffusion mass transport resistance between the liquid electrolyte and the electrode surfaces at the pore level. Low electrolyte velocity induces large current gradients from inlet to o... [more]

Keywords: cold chain, cold-storage container, Computational Fluid Dynamics, numerical analysis, Optimization, temperature distribution
Cold-storage containers are widely used in cold-chain logistics transportation due to their energy saving, environmental protection, and low operating cost. The uniformity of temperature distribution is significant in agricultural-product storage and transportation. This paper explored temperature distribution in the container by numerical simulation, which included ventilation velocity and the fan location. Numerical model/numerical simulation showed good agreement with experimental data in terms of temporal and spatial air temperature distribution. Results showed that the cooling rate improved as velocity increased, and temperature at 45 min was the lowest, when velocity was 16 m/s. Temperature-distribution uniformity in the compartment became worse with the increase in ventilation velocity, but its lowest temperature decreased with a velocity increase. With regard to fan energy consumption, the cooling rate of the cooling module, and temperature-field distribution in the product are... [more]

Keywords: DX A/C system, steady-state performance, variable speed, white-box modeling
When using a certain type of Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, it is primary to obtain their steady-state operating behaviors for achieving a better indoor thermal environment. This paper reports a development of a white-box-based dynamic model for a direct expansion (DX) air conditioning (A/C) system to predict its steady-state operating performance under variable speed operation. The established model consists of five sub-models, i.e., a compressor, an electronic expansion valve, an evaporator, a condenser and a conditioned space. Each sub-model was developed based on partial lumped parameter approach. Using the available data generated from an experimental DX A/C system, both transient and steady-state behaviors predictions agreed well with the experimental ones. With the help of the validated white-box model, the inherent steady-state operating performance expressed in terms of the relationship among total cooling capacity (TCC), equipment sensible heat ratio... Keywords: CFD modeling, elasticity modulus, Euler-two-phase model, spouted bed, validation experiments
With a Euler−Euler (E2P) approach, a mathematical model for predicting the pointwise hydrodynamic behavior of a spouted bed was implemented though computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques. The model considered a bed elasticity approach in order to reduce the number of required sub-models to provide closure for the solids stress strain-tensor. However, no modulus of elasticity sub-model for a bed elasticity approach has been developed for spouted beds, and thus, large deviations in the predictions are obtained with common sub-models reported in literature. To overcome such a limitation, a new modulus of elasticity based on a sensitivity analysis was developed and implemented on the E2P model. The model predictions were locally validated against experimental measurements obtained in previous studies. The experimental studies were conducted using our in-house developed advanced γ-ray computed tomography (CT) technique, which allows to obtain the cross-sectional time-averaged solids h... [more]
A Model to Improve Granular Temperature in CFD-DEM Simulations

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD-DEM, drag force, fluidized beds, granular temperature
CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamic-discrete element method) is a promising approach for simulating fluid−solid flows in fluidized beds. This approach generally under-predicts the granular temperature due to the use of drag models for the average drag force. This work develops a simple model to improve the granular temperature through increasing the drag force fluctuations on the particles. The increased drag force fluctuations are designed to match those obtained from PR-DNSs (particle-resolved direct numerical simulations). The impacts of the present model on the granular temperatures are demonstrated by posteriori tests. The posteriori tests of tri-periodic gas−solid flows show that simulations with the present model can obtain transient as well as steady-state granular temperature correctly. Moreover, the posteriori tests of fluidized beds indicated that the present model could significantly improve the granular temperature for the homogenous or slightly inhomogeneous systems, whi... Keywords: numerical simulation, submerged jet, unsteady flow
A water jet is a kind of high-speed dynamic fluid with high energy, which is widely used in the engineering field. In order to analyze the characteristics of the flow field and the change of law of the bottom impact pressure of the oblique submerged impinging jet at different times, its unsteady characteristics at different Reynolds numbers were studied by using the Wray−Agarwal (W-A) turbulence model. It can be seen from the results that in the process of jet movement, the pressure at the peak of velocity on the axis was the smallest, and the velocity, flow angle, and pressure distribution remain unchanged after a certain time. In the free jet region, the velocity, flow angle, and pressure remained unchanged. In the impingement region, the velocity and flow angle decreased rapidly, while the pressure increased rapidly. The maximum pressure coefficient of the impingement plate changed with time and was affected by the Reynolds number, but the distribution trend remained the same. In th... [more]

Electricity theft and fraud in energy consumption are two of the major issues for power distribution companies (PDCs) for many years. PDCs around the world are trying different methodologies for detecting electricity theft. The traditional methods for non-technical losses (NTLs) detection such as onsite inspection and reward and penalty policy have lost their place in the modern era because of their ineffective and time-consuming mechanism. With the advancement in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), newer and efficient NTL detection methods have been proposed by different researchers working in the field of data mining and AI. The AI-based NTL detection methods are superior to the conventional methods in terms of accuracy, efficiency, time-consumption, precision, and labor required. The importance of such AI-based NTL detection methods can be judged by looking at the growing trend toward the increasing number of research articles on this important development. Keywords: dynamic pore network modeling, shale reservoirs, water imbibition
Spontaneous water imbibition plays an imperative role in the development of shale or tight oil reservoirs. Spontaneous water imbibition is helpful in the extraction of crude oil from the matrix, although it decreases the relative permeability of the hydrocarbon phase dramatically. The dynamic pore-scale network modeling of water imbibition in shale and tight reservoirs is presented in this work; pore network generation, local capillary pressure function, conductance calculation and boundary conditions for imbibition are all presented in detail in this paper. The pore network is generated based on the characteristics of Barnett shale formations, and the corresponding laboratory imbibition experiments are matched using this established dynamic pore network model. The effects of the wettability, throat aspect ratio, viscosity, shape factor, micro-fractures, etc. are all investigated in this work. Keywords: conditional value at risk, electricity pricing, risk management
In dealing with sharp changes in electricity prices, contract planning is considered as a vital risk management tool for stakeholders in deregulated power markets. In this paper, dynamics of spot prices in Turkish electricity market are analyzed, and predictive performance of several models are compared, i.e., time series models and regime-switching models. Different models for derivative pricing are proposed, and alternative portfolio optimization problems using mean-variance optimization and conditional value at risk (CVaR) are solved. Expected payoff and risk structure for different hedging strategies for a hypothetical electricity company with a given demand are analyzed. Experimental studies show that regime-switching models are able to capture electricity characteristics better than their standard counterparts. In addition, evaluations with various risk management models demonstrate that those models are highly competent in providing an effective risk control practice for electri... [more]

Keywords: gas sequestration, geological structure, leakage risk, reservoir modelling, sequestration capacity, trapping mechanisms
A twenty-four-year on-going project of acid gas sequestration in a deep geological structure was subject to detailed modelling based upon a large set of geological, geophysical, and petrophysical data. The model was calibrated against available operational and monitoring data and used to determine basic characteristics of the sequestration process, such as fluid saturations and compositions, their variation in time due to fluid migrations, and the gas transition between free and aqueous phases. The simulation results were analysed with respect to various gas leakage risks. The contribution of various trapping mechanisms to the total sequestrated amount of injected gas was estimated. The observation evidence of no acid gas leakage from the structure was confirmed and explained by the simulation results of the sequestration process. The constructed and calibrated model of the structure was also used to predict the capacity of the analysed structure for increased sequestration by finding... [more]
