Fast Design Procedure for Turboexpanders in Pressure Energy Recovery Applications
Gaetano Morgese, Francesco Fornarelli, Paolo Oresta, Tommaso Capurso, Michele Stefanizzi, Sergio M. Camporeale, Marco Torresi
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, energy recovery, modelling techniques, throttling valves, turboexpander
Sustainable development can no longer neglect the growth of those technologies that look at the recovery of any energy waste in industrial processes. For example, in almost every industrial plant it happens that pressure energy is wasted in throttling devices for pressure and flow control needs. Clearly, the recovery of this wasted energy can be considered as an opportunity to reach not only a higher plant energy efficiency, but also the reduction of the plant Operating Expenditures (OpEx). In recent years, it is getting common to replace throttling valves with turbine-based systems (tuboexpander) thus getting both the pressure control and the energy recovery, for instance, producing electricity. However, the wide range of possible operating conditions, technical requirements and design constrains determine highly customized constructions of these turboexpanders. Furthermore, manufacturers are interested in tools enabling them to rapidly get the design of their products. For these reas... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex shape coils, induction brazing, industrial applications, numerical analysis
The electromagnetic process happening between an induction brazing coil and the brazing assembly was studied and is described in the following pages. Using the tools of numerical analysis, we managed to achieve 3-D simulation of the process, which includes presentation of the magnetic field, thermal heat transfer, and time dependence. The results presented are considered for two of commonly used materials—copper and stainless steel in the shape of pipes. The induction brazing coil is a complex C-shape to match with the real industrial practices. The results obtained from the model are in accordance with the experimental results, as in both the model and the experiment, the required temperature was reached in about 6 s. It was found that during the brazing process, the inductance of the winding increases by about 4 nH and the resistance by 1.5 mΩ, which is important for the coordination of the power supply.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD simulation, electric furnace, heat treatment, tempering, thermal efficiency
Heat treatments, such as steel tempering, are temperature-controlled processes. It allows ferrous steel to stabilize its structure after the heat treatment and quenching stages. The tempering temperature also determines the hardness of the steel, preferably to its optimum working strength. In a tempering furnace, a heat-resistant fan is commonly employed to generate moderate gas circulation to obtain adequate temperature homogeneity and heat transfer. Nevertheless, there is a tradeoff because the overall thermal efficiency is expected to reduce because of the high rotating speed of the fan. Therefore, this study numerically investigates the thermal efficiency changes of an electric tempering furnace due to changes in the rotating speed of the fan and the effects on temperature homogeneity and the heat transfer rate to the load. Heat losses through the walls were calculated from the external temperature measurement of the furnace. Four different speeds were simulated: 720, 990, 1350, an... [more]

Keywords: CIGMA, Computational Fluid Dynamics, conjugate heat transfer, containment vessel, natural convection, thermal hydraulics
In the case of a severe accident, natural convection plays an important role in the atmosphere mixing of nuclear reactor containments. In this case, the natural convection might not in the steady-state condition. Hence, instead of steady-state simulation, the transient simulation should be performed to understand natural convection in the accident scenario within a nuclear reactor containment. The present study, therefore, was aimed at the transient 3-D numerical simulations of natural convection of air around a cylindrical containment with unsteady thermal boundary conditions (BCs) at the vessel wall. For this purpose, the experiment series was done in the CIGMA facility at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). The upper vessel or both the upper vessel and the middle jacket was cooled by subcooled water, while the lower vessel was thermally insulated. A 3-D model was simulated with OpenFOAM®, applying the unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes equations (URANS) model. Different turbule... [more]
Effect of Air-Ducted Blade Design on Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine Performance
Cemil Yigit
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blade design, Computational Fluid Dynamics, horizontal axis wind turbine, power coefficient, response surface optimization
Wind turbines without pitch control are more preferable from economical point of view but aerodynamic stall affects them more and after a critical wind speed local boundary layer separation occurs. Consequently, their power production is relatively low. In this study, air ducts added on the blade and using the airflow from them the kinetic energy of the low-momentum fluid behind the surface was increased and delay of separation of the boundary layer from the surface was examined The Response Surface Optimization method was utilized in order to get the best possible design under the constraints and targets arranged for the parameters termed the diameter, slope, number and angle of attack of the air ducts. By using computational fluid dynamics analysis, optimum parameter values were obtained and air-ducted and air-duct free blade designs were compared. An improvement in power coefficient between 3.4−4.4% depending on wind speed was achieved with the new design. Due to increase in viscous... [more]

Hyeonjin Chung, Young Mi Park, Sunwoo Kim
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-prime array, continuous compressive sensing, direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation, positive atomic norm minimization, super-resolution
A super-resolution direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation algorithm that employs a co-prime array and positive atomic norm minimization (ANM) is proposed. To exploit larger array cardinality, the co-prime array vector is constructed by arranging elements of a correlation matrix. The positive ANM is a technique that can enhance resolution when the coefficients of the atoms are the positive real numbers. A novel optimization problem is proposed to ensure the coefficients of the atoms are the positive real numbers, and the positive ANM is employed after solving the optimization problem. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves high resolution and has lower complexity than the other ANM-based super-resolution DoA estimation algorithm.

Keywords: alternating current component, asynchronous connection, circuit breaker, direct current component, energy system, generator
This paper describes and analyzes the phenomena that occur in the case of a current interruption due to faults in the high voltage circuit breaker. That happens during connection of a generator to the network without meeting the synchronization conditions. This paper also describes and analyzes the important factors that have to be considered during the specification of SF6 circuit breakers for high voltage generators. A high direct current component in the fault current poses a major problem during such interruptions. To investigate this problem and propose possible solutions, simulations were performed on a power network model completed with the network’s data, using software such as EMTP-ATP, PSS-E and MATLAB. Various modes of operation were simulated, which are important for analyzing the strain on circuit breakers near the generator. Based on the performed simulations, it can be concluded that circuit breakers with rapid reactions in interrupting the fault current in an energy sys... [more]

Keywords: dynamic characteristic, output voltage, pressure, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, water content
A greater understanding of the dynamic processes inside the stack is urgently needed to optimize the PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell). In this study, we examined the gas, water and electrochemical processes inside the stack, studied the physical dynamics of system accessories such as gas supplement, flow and pressure-regulating devices, then used Simulink to build a mathematical model of a complete PEMFC system; a segmented testing platform was built to test the spatial distribution of RH (relative humidity) and pressure, which was used to verify the simulation model; based on this model, the complicated phenomena occurring inside the stack during fluctuating operating states were calculated. Our findings showed that the pressure in the gas channel and exhaust manifolds decreased when the external load increased, changing sharply at the moment of load change. The transient pressure difference between the cathode and anode sides (several kPa) had a huge impact on the MEA (memb... [more]

Pascal Brault
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas aggregation source, molecular dynamics, Multiscale Modelling, nanocatalyst, PEM fuel cell electrodes, plasma sputtering
Molecular dynamics simulations (MDs) are carried out for predicting platinum Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell nanocatalyst growth on a model carbon electrode. The aim is to provide a one-shot simulation of the entire multistep process of deposition in the context of plasma sputtering, from sputtering of the target catalyst/transport to the electrode substrate/deposition on the porous electrode. The plasma processing reactor is reduced to nanoscale dimensions for tractable MDs using scale reduction of the plasma phase and requesting identical collision numbers in experiments and the simulation box. The present simulations reproduce the role of plasma pressure for the plasma phase growth of nanocatalysts (here, platinum).
Modeling of Selected Lighting Parameters of LED Panel

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, junction temperature, LED panel, lighting parameters, thermal modeling
Semiconductor light sources are currently the fastest growing and most energy efficient group of light sources used in lighting technology. Their lighting parameters, such as luminous flux, correlated color temperature and color rendering index depend on the value of the forward current, as well as the temperature of the junction. LED source manufacturers usually specify, in data sheets, the effect of junction temperature and forward current on the luminous flux for individual light sources. The difficulty, however, is the correct determination of temperature and then lighting parameters, by simulation methods for multi-source lighting systems. Determining the junction temperature which affects lighting parameters is particulary important in the case of LED panels and luminaires, where thermally coupled LED sources shaping the output lighting parameters are in close proximity to each other. Additionally, other factors influencing the temperature distribution of sources, such as the des... [more]

Keywords: DC microgrid, HIL, marine propulsion, model-based design, multi physics simulation, ship dynamic, shipboard power systems
Recent and strict regulations in the maritime sector regarding exhaust gas emissions has led to an evolution of shipboard systems with a progressive increase of complexity, from the early utilization of electric propulsion to the realization of an integrated shipboard power system organized as a microgrid. Therefore, novel approaches, such as the model-based design, start to be experimented by industries to obtain multiphysics models able to study the impact of different designing solutions. In this context, this paper illustrates in detail the development of a multiphysics simulation framework, able to mimic the behaviour of a DC electric ship equipped with electric propulsion, rotating generators and battery energy storage systems. The simulation platform has been realized within the retrofitting project of a Ro-Ro Pax vessel, to size components and to validate control strategies before the system commissioning. It has been implemented on the Opal-RT simulator, as the core component... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, dimensioning, heat exchanger, heat transfer, micro tubes, Modelling, wire structure
The main objective of this study is to calculate and determine design parameters for a novel wire cloth micro heat exchanger. Wire cloth micro heat exchangers offer a range of promising applications in the chemical industry, plastics technology, the recycling industry and energy technology. We derived correlations to calculate the heat transfer rate, pressure drop and temperature distributions through the woven structure in order to design wire cloth heat exchangers for different applications. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations have been carried out to determine correlations for the dimensionless Euler and Nusselt numbers. Based on these correlations, we have developed a simplified model in which the correlations can be used to calculate temperature distributions and heat exchanger performance. This allows a wire cloth micro heat exchanger to be virtually designed for different applications.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chemical simulation, high temperature, NOx emission, staged combustion, strong reducing atmosphere
Staged combustion is an effective technology to control NO emissions for coal-fired boilers. In this paper, the characteristics of NO emissions under a high temperature and strong reducing atmosphere conditions in staged air and O2/CO2 combustion were investigated by CHEMKIN. A methane flame doped with ammonia and hydrogen cyanide in a tandem-type tube furnace was simulated to detect the effects of combustion temperature and stoichiometric ratio on NO emissions. Mechanism analysis was performed to identify the elementary steps for NO formation and reduction at high temperatures. The results indicate that in both air and O2/CO2 staged combustion, the conversion ratios of fuel-N to NO at the main combustion zone exit increase as the stoichiometric ratio rises, and they are slightly affected by the combustion temperature. The conversion ratios at the burnout zone exit decrease with the increasing stoichiometric ratio at low temperatures, and they are much higher than those at the main com... [more]

Keywords: absorption chiller, cogeneration, electric-load tracking, energy saving
Hospitals are very attractive for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) applications, due to their high and continuous demand for electric and thermal energy. However, both design and control strategies of CHP systems are usually based on an empiric and very simplified approach, and this may lead to non-optimal solutions. The paper presents a novel approach based on the dynamic simulation of a trigeneration system to be installed in a hospital located in Puglia (South Italy), with around 600 beds, aiming to investigate the energy and economic performance of the system, for a given control strategy (electric-load tracking). The system includes a natural gas fired reciprocating engine (with a rated power of 2.0 MW), a single-stage LiBr-H2O absorption chiller (with a cooling capacity of around 770 kW), auxiliary gas-fired boilers and steam generators, electric chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, storage tanks and several additional components (pipes, valves, etc.). Keywords: ALPG, electricity, household, load profiles, LPG, Modelling, residential, Wepro model
It is important to understand residential energy use as it is a large energy consumption sector and the potential for change is of great importance for global energy sustainability. A large energy-saving potential and emission reduction potential can be achieved, among others, by understanding energy consumption patterns in more detail. However, existing studies show that it requires many input parameters or disaggregated individual end-uses input data to generate the load profiles. Therefore, we have developed a simplified approach, called weighted proportion (Wepro) model, to synthesise the residential electricity load profile by proportionally matching the city’s main characteristics: Age group, labour force and gender structure with the representative households profiles provided in the load profile generator. The findings indicate that the synthetic load profiles can represent the local electricity consumption characteristics in the case city of Amsterdam based on time variation a... [more]
A Calibration Procedure for an Analytical Wake Model Using Wind Farm Operational Data
Jian Teng, Corey D. Markfort
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical wake model, power prediction, wake modeling, wind energy, wind farm optimization
Wind energy is one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources in the U.S. Wind turbine wakes change the flow field within wind farms and reduce power generation. Prior research has used experimental and computational methods to investigate and model wind farm wake effects. However, these methods are costly and time-consuming to use commercially. In contrast, a simple analytical approach can provide reasonably accurate estimates of wake effects on flow and power. To reducing errors in wake modeling, one must calibrate the model based on a specific wind farm setting. The purpose of this research is to develop a calibration procedure for wind farm wake modeling using a simple analytical approach and wind turbine operational data obtained from the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The proposed procedure uses a Gaussian-based analytical wake model and wake superposition model. The wake growth rate varies across the wind farm based on the local streamwise turbulen... [more]

Keywords: breeding blanket, EU DEMO, nuclear fusion, system-level modelling, thermal-hydraulics, water-cooled lithium-lead (WCLL)
The European demonstration fusion power reactor (EU DEMO) tokamak will be the first European fusion device to produce electricity and to include a breeding blanket (BB). In the framework of the design of the EU DEMO BB, the analysis of the heat transfer between the inlet and outlet manifold of the coolant is needed, to assess the actual cooling capability of the water entering the cooling channels, as well as the actual coolant outlet temperature from the machine. The complex, fully three-dimensional conjugate heat transfer problem is reduced here with a novel approach to a simpler one, decoupling the longitudinal and transverse scales for the heat transport by developing correlations for a conductive heat-transfer problem. While in the longitudinal direction a standard 1D model for the heat transport by fluid advection is adopted, a set of 2D finite elements analyses are run in the transverse direction, in order to lump the 2D heat conduction effects in suitable correlations. Such cor... [more]

Modern power system operation should comply with strictly reliability and security constraints, which aim at guarantee the correct system operation also in the presence of severe internal and external disturbances. Amongst the possible phenomena perturbing correct system operation, the predictive assessment of the impacts induced by extreme weather events has been considered as one of the most critical issues to address, since they can induce multiple, and large-scale system contingencies. In this context, the development of new computing paradigms for resilience analysis has been recognized as a very promising research direction. To address this issue, this paper proposes two methodologies, which are based on Time Varying Markov Chain and Dynamic Bayesian Network, for assessing the system resilience against extreme wind gusts. The main difference between the proposed methodologies and the traditional solution techniques is the improved capability in modelling the occurrence of multipl... [more]

Keywords: effect of temperature, flow in porous media, gas/liquid systems, relative permeability, thermal recovery method
Thermal recovery processes for heavy oil exploitation involve three-phase flow at elevated temperatures. The mathematical modeling of such processes necessitates the account of changes in the rock−fluid system’s flow behavior as the temperature rises. To this end, numerous studies on effects of the temperature on relative permeabilities have been reported in the literature. Compared to studies on the temperature effects on oil/water-relative permeabilities, studies (and hence, data) on gas/oil-relative permeabilities are limited. However, the role of temperature on both gas/oil and oil/water-relative permeabilities has been a topic of much discussion, contradiction and debate. The jury is still out, without a consensus, with several contradictory hypotheses, even for the limited number of studies on gas/oil-relative permeabilities. This study presents a critical analysis of studies on gas/oil-relative permeabilities as reported in the literature, and puts forward an undeniable argument... [more]

The paper presents the possibility of using cable screen earthing current measurements for MV, single-core cable line monitoring. Cable screen earthing current measurement allows the condition of cable screen connections, degradation of earthing systems, and the earthing system integrity to be observed, which allows a condition based maintenance (CBM) strategy to be introduced for cable screens and earthing systems in MV networks. CBM allows the workload and failure rate to be reduced. Analysis of the condition of the cable screen and earthing system is carried out based on the cable screen earthing current trends and rapid changes of the current. The proposed system is integrated with a state of the art advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and uses AMI data to calculate currents flowing through cable segments of the analyzed feeder. Additionally, a system which counts thermo-mechanical stresses associated with high current incidents in cable screens is proposed. The stresses are ass... [more]
