Astrid Ziemann, André Galvez Arboleda, Astrid Lampert
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: HIRVAC2D, low-level jet, micro-scale model simulation, wind lidar
For the increasing importance of the wind energy branch, exact wind climatologies at the operation altitudes are essential. As wind turbines of increasing hub height are erected, the rotors are located at an altitude interval influenced by the phenomenon of low-level jet (LLJ). The main objective of the study is to assess if and how numerical simulations can represent the development especially of nocturnal LLJs in comparison to measurements. In this article, the microscale numerical model HIRVAC2D is used for a range of parameters. The simulated results for properties of the LLJ are compared to lidar data at an altitude range of 40 m to 500 m at the study site Braunschweig in the North German Plain, a grassland location that may be representative for a large area. Similarities and differences of the occurrence, height and maximum wind speed of the nocturnal LLJ are discussed using two different criteria to define a LLJ. The analysis of the lidar data set for the grassland site reveale... [more]
Recent Progress in Hydrogen Flammability Prediction for the Safe Energy Systems
Joongoo Jeon, Sung Joong Kim
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: chemical kinetics, flame extinction, flame stretch, flammability, heat loss, hydrogen energy, hydrogen safety, Lewis number
Many countries consider hydrogen as a promising energy source to resolve the energy challenges over the global climate change. However, the potential of hydrogen explosions remains a technical issue to embrace hydrogen as an alternate solution since the Hindenburg disaster occurred in 1937. To ascertain safe hydrogen energy systems including production, storage, and transportation, securing the knowledge concerning hydrogen flammability is essential. In this paper, we addressed a comprehensive review of the studies related to predicting hydrogen flammability by dividing them into three types: experimental, numerical, and analytical. While the earlier experimental studies had focused only on measuring limit concentration, recent studies clarified the extinction mechanism of a hydrogen flame. In numerical studies, the continued advances in computer performance enabled even multi-dimensional stretched flame analysis following one-dimensional planar flame analysis. The different extinction... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: EMF modeling, gas-insulated substations, transient ground potential rise, VFTO
Assessment of very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) requires good knowledge of the behavior of gas-insulated substation when subjected to very high frequencies. The international standards and guidelines generically present only recommendations regarding the VFTO suppression without a technical and mathematical background. Therefore, to provide an accurate image regarding the critical locations across a gas-insulated substation (GIS) from a transient response point of view, a suitable modeling technique has to be identified and developed for the substation. The paper aimed to provide an accurate assessment of the GIS holistic transient response through an electromagnetic field theory (EMF) approach. This modeling technique has always been a difficult task when it came to gas-insulated substations. However, recent studies have shown that through suitable Computer-aided design models, representing the GIS metallic ensemble, accurate results can be obtained. The paper investigated severa... Keywords: composites, critical flashover voltages, electric field stress, FEM, FRP crossarm
The crossarm is an important component of transmission towers, providing insulation for transmission lines at different voltage ratings. Recently, composite crossarms were widely used as a composite tower component and were found to be the most favorable choice for replacing old wooden crossarms. Owing to the satisfactory pilot operation and multiple sets of testing, fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite crossarms have been used in Malaysia in both 132 and 275 kV transmission lines since the late 1990′s. Since then, some modifications have been proposed to improve the mechanical performance of the crossarm, in order to ensure the reliability of its performance. In this investigation, the effect of a proposed improvement, achieved by installing a brace for the crossarm, was investigated numerically. A simulation study was conducted, with a consideration of the lightning impulse voltage (LIV) and swing angle exhibited by the crossarm. The potential and electric field (E-Field) di... [more]
A Hybrid System Based on LSTM for Short-Term Power Load Forecasting
Yu Jin, Honggang Guo, Jianzhou Wang, Aiyi Song
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data preprocessing strategy, deep learning structure, hybrid analysis-forecast system, optimization algorithm, power load forecasting
As the basic guarantee for the reliability and economic operations of state grid corporations, power load prediction plays a vital role in power system management. To achieve the highest possible prediction accuracy, many scholars have been committed to building reliable load forecasting models. However, most studies ignore the necessity and importance of data preprocessing strategies, which may lead to poor prediction performance. Thus, to overcome the limitations in previous studies and further strengthen prediction performance, a novel short-term power load prediction system, VMD-BEGA-LSTM (VLG), integrating a data pretreatment strategy, advanced optimization technique, and deep learning structure, is developed in this paper. The prediction capability of the new system is evaluated through simulation experiments that employ the real power data of Queensland, New South Wales, and South Australia. The experimental results indicate that the developed system is significantly better than... [more]

Siti Noratikah Che Deraman, Saddam Hussein Abo Sabah, Shaharudin Shah Zaini, Taksiah A. Majid, Amin Al-Fakih
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CFD simulation, kitchen house, rural house, wind flow
Most Malaysian rural houses are categorized as non-engineered buildings and vulnerable to damage during events such as windstorms due to the fact that these houses lack engineering considerations. These houses are characterized by having an attached kitchen house, and many of these houses were previously damaged by thunderstorms. The current research investigated the air flow characteristics changes surrounding these houses as a result of the presence of the kitchen. The roof pitch, position, gap height, and overhang were investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The results showed that the kitchen position at the center resulted in a slight increase in the suction on the ridge of the roof; however, it significantly altered the flow pattern in the windward and leeward directions. The results also showed that the roof overhang, roof pitch, and kitchen position contributed severely to the damage of the rural house. Moreover, the highest suction occurred at the ro... [more]
A Mathematical Model of Biomass Combustion Physical and Chemical Processes
Florin Popescu, Razvan Mahu, Ion V. Ion, Eugen Rusu
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, mathematical modeling, numerical simulation, thermochemical decomposition
The numerical simulation of biomass combustion requires a model that must contain, on one hand, sub-models for biomass conversion to primary products, which involves calculations for heat transfer, biomass decomposition rate, product fractions, chemical composition, and material properties, and on the other hand, sub-models for volatile products transport inside and outside of the biomass particle, their combustion, and the char reduction/oxidation. Creating such a complete mathematical model is particularly challenging; therefore, the present study proposes a versatile alternative—an originally formulated generalized 3D biomass decomposition model designed to be efficiently integrated with existing CFD technology. The biomass decomposition model provides the chemical composition and mixture fractions of volatile products and char at the cell level, while the heat transfer, species transport, and chemical reaction calculations are to be handled by the CFD software. The combustion model... [more]
Exergy Evaluation of a Water Distribution System
Jedrzej Bylka, Tomasz Mróz
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy, Exergy, water distribution system modelling, water supply, water-energy nexus
The water supply system is one of the most important elements in a city. Currently, many cities struggle with a water deficit problem. Water is a commonly available resource and constitutes the majority of land cover; however, its quality, in many cases, makes it impossible to use as drinking water. To treat and distribute water, it is necessary to supply a certain amount of energy to the system. An important goal of water utility operators is to assess the energy efficiency of the processes and components. Energy assessments are usually limited to the calculation of energy dissipation (sometimes called “energy loss”). From a physical point of view, the formulation of “energy loss” is incorrect; energy in water transport systems is not consumed but only transformed (dissipated) into other, less usable forms. In the water supply process, the quality of energy—exergy (ability to convert into another form)—is consumed; hence, a new evaluation approach is needed. The motivation for this st... [more]
A Methodology to Investigate the Deviations between Simple and Detailed Dynamic Methods for the Building Energy Performance Assessment
Ilaria Ballarini, Andrea Costantino, Enrico Fabrizio, Vincenzo Corrado
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air heat balance equation, building energy modeling, detailed dynamic simulation, EN ISO 52016, simple hourly model
The research investigates the validity of the simple hourly method, as introduced by the EN ISO 52016-1 standard, for the assessment of the building energy demand for heating and cooling, by comparing it with a detailed dynamic model (EnergyPlus). A new methodology is provided to identify and quantify the causes of deviations between the models. It consists in the split of the contributions of the air heat balance (AHB) equation by dynamic driving force, and in the adoption of consistency options of the modeling parameters related to specific physical phenomena. A case study approach is adopted in the article to achieve the research objective. The results show that the deviations in the heating and cooling loads between the two calculation methods can be mainly ascribed to the use of different surface heat transfer coefficients, and to a different modeling of the extra thermal radiation to the sky. Providing a methodology to validate the calculation method, this work is intended to con... [more]

Keywords: constant volume vessel, CONVERGE™ CFD simulation, flame nature luminosity, impinging flame visualization, soot generation
In this paper, the visualization experiments of spray, ignition, and combustion of diesel under variable injection pressure (from 90 to 130 MPa) were studied by using a constant volume vessel and impinging combustion plate system. With the development of the down-sizing of diesel engines, the wall impinging combustion without liquid spray collision will be the research focus in the diesel engine combustion process. The flame natural luminosity in the experiment represents the soot formation of diesel combustion. Besides, the detailed information of diesel spray mixing combustion was obtained by using the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation of alternative fuels in CONVERGE™. The specific conclusions are as follows. The high velocity of the spray under the higher injection pressure could reduce the low-mixing area near the impinging wall by entraining more air. Under higher injection pressure in simulation, the gas diffused more extensively, and more heat was released after com... [more]
Point and Interval Forecasting of Zonal Electricity Prices and Demand Using Heteroscedastic Models: The IPEX Case
Mauro Bernardi, Francesco Lisi
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conditional variance modelling, forecasting, interval forecasting, non-parametric models, zonal electricity demand, zonal electricity prices
Since the electricity market liberalisation of the mid-1990s, forecasting energy demand and prices in competitive markets has become of primary importance for energy suppliers, market regulators and policy makers. In this paper, we propose a non-parametric model to obtain point and interval predictions of price and demand. It does not require any parametric assumption on the distribution of the error term or on the functional relationships linking the response variable to covariates. The assumed location−scale model provides a non-parametric estimation of the conditional mean and of the conditional variance by means of a Generalised Additive Model. Interval forecasts, at any given confidence level, are then obtained using a further non-parametric estimation of the innovation’s quantile. Since both the conditional mean and the conditional variance of the response variable are non-linear functions of covariates depending on calendar factors, renewable energy productions and other market... April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building energy consumption, building energy simulation, climate change, energy impacts, global warming, green-house gas emission, MEB, uhuMEB
The growing concern about global climate change extends to different professional sectors. In the building industry, the energy consumption of buildings becomes a factor susceptible to change due to the direct relationship between the outside temperature and the energy needed to cool and heat the internal space. This document aims to estimate the energy consumption of a Minimum Energy Building (MEB) in different scenarios—past, present, and future—in the subtropical climate typical of seaside cities in Southern Spain. The building energy consumption has been predicted using dynamic building energy simulation software tools. Projected climate data were obtained in four time periods (Historical, the 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s), based on four emission scenarios defined by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): B1, B2, A2, A1F1. This methodology has been mathematically complemented to obtain data in closer time frames (2025 and 2030). In addition, different mitigation strategie... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dry bulb temperature, evaporation loss, mathematical modeling, Merkel approach, natural transfer, relative air humidity
The measures to reduce the impact of evaporation loss in a natural draft counter-flow wet cooling tower (NDWCT) have important implications for water conservation and emissions reduction. A mathematical model of evaporation loss in the NDWCT was established by using a modified Merkel method. The NDWCTs in the 300 MW and 600 MW power plant were taken as the research objects. Comparing experimental values with calculated values, the relative error was less than 3%. Then, the effect of air parameters on evaporation loss of NDWCT was analyzed. The results showed that, with the increase of dry bulb temperature, the evaporation heat dissipation and the evaporation loss decreased, while the rate of evaporation loss caused by unit temperature difference increased. The ambient temperature increased by 1 °C and the evaporation loss was reduced by nearly 26.65 t/h. When the relative air humidity increased, the evaporation heat dissipation and evaporation loss decreased, and the rate of evaporatio... [more]

Keywords: building energy simulation, energy efficiency indicators, internal heat gains, occupant behavior, parametric study
12.9% of the energy use in the EU originates from the commercial and public sector. It has therefore become a priority to optimize energy efficiency in these buildings. The purpose of this study has been to explore how energy demand in a new office building is affected by different internal heat gains, location, orientation, and façade design, and also to see how different indicators can change perspective on energy efficiency. The study was performed with simulations in IDA-ICE with different façade design and changes in internal heat gains (IHG), orientation, and location. Energy demand was then compared to two different indicators. Using a façade designed to lower solar heat gains had little effect on energy demand in the north of Sweden, but slightly more effect further south. The amount of internal heat gains had significant effect on energy demand. Making deeper studies on design and internal heat gains should therefore be prioritized in the beginning of new building projects so... [more]

Keywords: flue gas desulfurization, mathematical modeling, model experimental verification, shape factor, solid particle dissolution
Solid-liquid dissolution is a central step in many industrial applications such as pharmaceutical, process engineering, and pollution control. Accurate mathematical models are proposed to improve reactor design and process operations. Analytical methods are significantly beneficial in the case of iterative methods used within experimental investigations. In the present study, a detailed analytical solution for the general case of solid particles dissolving in multiphase chemical reaction systems is presented. In this model, the authors consider a formulation that considers the particles’ shape factor. The general case presented could be utilized within different problems of multiphase flows. These methods could be extended to different cases within the chemical engineering area. Examples are illustrated here in relation to limestone dissolution taking place within the Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization process, where calcium carbonate is dissolving in an acidic environment. Keywords: cooling system, high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell, organic rankine cycle, plate heat exchanger, thermal management, thermodynamic modeling, waste heat recovery
Recently, the need for energy-saving and eco-friendly energy systems is increasing as problems such as rapid climate change and air pollution are getting more serious. While research on a power generation system using hydrogen energy-based fuel cells, which rarely generates harmful substances unlike fossil fuels, is being done, a power generation system that combines fuel cells and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) is being recognized. In the case of High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC) with an operating temperature of approximately 150 to 200 °C, the importance of a thermal management system increases. It also produces the waste heat energy at a relatively high temperature, so it can be used as a heat source for ORC system. In order to achieve this outcome, waste heat must be used on a limited scale within a certain range of the temperature of the stack coolant. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize the waste heat of ORC system reflecting the stack thermal manageme... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: parametric study, power generation, radiation, thermodynamics, thermophotovoltaics
Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) systems generate electricity without the limitations of radiation intermittency, which is the case in solar photovoltaic systems. As energy demands steadily increase, there is a need to improve the conversion dynamics of TPV systems. Consequently, this study proposes a novel radiation-thermodynamic model to gain insights into the thermodynamics of TPV systems. After validating the model, parametric studies were performed to study the dependence of power generation attributes on the radiator and PV cell temperatures. Our results indicated that a silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) module could produce a power density output, thermal losses, and maximum voltage of 115.68 W cm−2, 18.14 W cm−2, and 36 V, respectively, at a radiator and PV cell temperature of 1800 K and 300 K. Power density output increased when the radiator temperature increased; however, the open circuit voltage degraded when the temperature of the TPV cells increased. Overall, for an 80 W PV module,... Keywords: air distribution, CFD analysis, cooling, data center, hard floor, hot aisle containment (HAC), raised floor, thermal performance
Removing heat from high-density information technology (IT) equipment is essential for data centers. Maintaining the proper operating environment for IT equipment can be expensive. Rising energy cost and energy consumption has prompted data centers to consider hot aisle and cold aisle containment strategies, which can improve the energy efficiency and maintain the recommended level of inlet air temperature to IT equipment. It can also resolve hot spots in traditional uncontained data centers to some degree. This study analyzes the IT environment of the hot aisle containment (HAC) system, which has been considered an essential solution for high-density data centers. The thermal performance was analyzed for an IT server room with HAC in a reference data center. Computational fluid dynamics analysis was conducted to compare the operating performances of the cooling air distribution systems applied to the raised and hard floors and to examine the difference in the IT environment between th... Keywords: air cooling, numerical simulation, scientific payload rack, space station, temperature and flow field
The space scientific payload rack is a multifunctional experimental platform, and the requirements of the environmental temperature index are different for diversified experimental modules inside. The air cooling system is an important part of the rack thermal control system. A new type of air cooling system with small size and flexible arrangement is proposed in this paper, that is, micro air ducts with pinhole-sized air vents. The rack physical models of new and traditional air cooling modes are established, respectively. The numerical simulation of the inner air flow is carried out by Ansys Fluent CFD software (Ansys Inc., Canonsburg, PA, USA), which verifies that compared with the traditional method, the temperature field and flow field of the new air cooling method are more uniform, and the heat sources located at the edge of the rack can also be cooled better.

Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, experimental analysis, fixed bed, heat load, heat transfer, Modelling, solid fuels
The paper concerns the analysis of the heat transfer process that occurred during solid fuel burning in fixed bed conditions. The subject of the analysis is a cylindrical combustion chamber with an output of 12 kW heating power equipped with a retort burner for hard coal and biomass combustion. During the research, a numerical and experimental study is performed. The analysis is prepared for various heat load of the combustion chamber, which allowed for the reconstruction of real working conditions for heating devices working with solid fuels combustion. The temperature distribution obtained by the experimental way is compared with results of the numerical modeling. Local distribution of principal heat transfer magnitudes like a heat flux density and a heat transfer coefficient that occurred on the sidewall of the combustion chamber is analyzed. The analysis showed, that the participation of convection and radiation in the overall heat transfer process has resulted from the heat load o... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, free surface flow, free surface vortices, intake structures, physical hydraulic model, vertical pump
Pump intake structure design is one area where physical models still remain as the only acceptable method that can provide reliable engineering results. Ensuring the amount of turbulence, entrained air vortices, and swirl are kept within acceptable limits requires site-specific, expensive, and time-consuming physical model studies. This study aims to investigate the viability of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as an alternative tool for pump intake design thus reducing the need for extensive physical experiments. In this study, a transient multiphase simulation of a 530 mm wide rectangular intake sump housing a 116 m3/h pump is presented. The flow conditions, vortex formation and inlet swirl are compared to an existing 1:10 reduced scaled physical model test. For the baseline test, the predicted surface and submerged vortices agreed well with those observed in the physical model. Both the physical model test and the numerical model showed that the initial geometry of the pump sump i... [more]

Keywords: deep mine, dynamic load, energy evolution, fracture behavior, strain energy density
The exploitation of deep resources is necessary for human development. At the same time, high-stress environments that are deep underground bring about great challenges vis-à-vis resource exploitation. A large deep opening is sensitive to high ground stress, and is easily influenced by external interference, which can lead to geologically hazardous occurrences. To investigate the evolution of fracturing and energy in large, deep stopes subjected to dynamic loads, we established a numerical model of a stope in the Gaofeng mine. Using ANSYS/LS-DYNA software, we implemented an implicit solution to initial static stress and an explicit solution for dynamic analysis. Based on our numerical results, we obtained the fracture behavior and energy evolution under coupled static and dynamic loads. To determine the response of ground pressure to mining activity, a 24-channel microseismic monitoring system was designed for the Gaofeng mine based on the numerical analysis.

Keywords: deep wellbore heat exchanger, geothermal energy CFD, Modelling
Geothermal is a renewable energy source that can be untapped through various subsurface technologies. Closed geothermal well solutions, such as deep geothermal heat exchangers (DBHEs), consist of circulating a working fluid to recover the available heat, with less dependency on the local geological settings than conventional geothermal systems. This paper emphasizes a double numerical method to strengthen the assessment of DBHE performances. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) commercial software and the 1D coupled wellbore-reservoir geothermal simulator T2Well have been used to investigate the heat transfer and fluid flow in a vertical DBHE in high geothermal gradient environments. The use of constant water properties to investigate the energy produced from DBHEs can lead to underestimating the overall heat transfer at high temperature and low mass flow rate. 2D axisymmetric CFD modelling improves the understanding of the return flow at the bottom of the DBHE, readjusting and better... Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, eccentric compressor, non-uniform flow, non-uniform tip clearance, steady and unsteady
The tip clearance has an important effect on the performance of an engine compressor. While the impact of tip clearance on a concentric compressor has been widely explored in previous research, the flow field distribution of an eccentric compressor has only been minimally explored. Both the steady and unsteady computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods have been widely used in the studies of concentric axial-compressors, and they have similar simulation results in terms of flow field. However, they have been rarely applied to axial-compressors with non-uniform tip clearance to investigate their flow field. In this paper, ANSYS CFX is used as CFD software, and both steady and unsteady CFD methods are applied to study a single rotor of ROTOR67 to investigate the compressor characteristic line and flow field under different eccentricity conditions. The results show that non-uniform tip clearance creates a non-uniform flow field at the inlet and tip regions over the whole operating range.... [more]

Investigating characteristics for the secondary breakup of dropping liquid is a fundamental scientific and practical problem in multiphase flow. For its solving, it is necessary to consider the features of both the main hydrodynamic and secondary processes during spray granulation and vibration separation of heterogeneous systems. A significant difficulty in modeling the secondary breakup process is that in most technological processes, the breakup of droplets and bubbles occurs through the simultaneous action of several dispersion mechanisms. In this case, the existing mathematical models based on criterion equations do not allow establishing the change over time of the process’s main characteristics. Therefore, the present article aims to solve an urgent scientific and practical problem of studying the nonstationary process of the secondary breakup of liquid droplets under the condition of the vibrational impact of oscillatory elements. Methods of mathematical modeling were used to a... [more]
