Guodong Gai, Olivier Thomine, Abdellah Hadjadj, Sergey Kudriakov, Anthony Wachs
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gravity effect, incompressible flow, particle-turbulence interaction, preferential concentration, stokes number
The impact of gravity on the particle preferential concentration is investigated by direct numerical simulations in an Eulerian−Lagrangian framework for a large range of Stokes numbers Stη=0.01∼4. For particles with small Stokes numbers such as Stη=0.01, the gravity has minor effects on the particle spatial distribution in the turbulence. With increasing Stη, stripped structures of the high number density of particles appear and expand along the gravity direction. Different evaluation methods of particle preferential concentration are discussed such as the spatial distribution, the box index, and the probability density function. The number density of particles in the accumulating regions reduced under the influence of gravity. The reduction becomes prominent for the particle cloud at Stokes number Stη≈1, especially in the clusters of high particle number density. For large Stokes number Stη, the slip velocity significantly increases due to the particle gravity. Due to the gravity, the... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element magnetic field simulation, magnetostrictive sensor, PV module bypass diode, PV system shading detection
When the photovoltaic (PV) system suffers shading problems caused by different degrees and areas, the shaded PV cells will consume electricity and generate heat, the corresponding bypass diode operating at a certain current will conduct, and a special magnetic field will be generated in space. In this study, a magnetostrictive-based shading detection method and device for the PV system are developed from theoretical, simulation, and physical experimental aspects. This study aims to detect the special magnetic field using magnetostrictive material with a certain response pattern under the magnetic field to detect and locate the shading problem of each module in the PV system. Theoretically, the analysis is carried out from the on−off situation of the bypass diodes of PV modules under different shading conditions and the response mechanism of magnetostrictive materials under the action of the magnetic field. During simulation, the finite element magnetic field simulations are performed f... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: burial depth, gas extraction borehole, multi-field evolution, numerical simulation, side pressure coefficient
To ensure the effectiveness of the gas extraction borehole, it is necessary to investigate the stress-displacement-fracture evolution of the coal around the borehole. In this study, by constructing a numerical model of a gas extraction borehole, the burial depth and side pressure coefficient are used to characterize the overall stress level of the borehole and the difference in stress distribution caused by complex stress conditions. First, the stress time-varying pattern and force chain distribution of coal around the borehole were revealed. Then, the displacement time-varying pattern and displacement distribution of coal around the borehole were elucidated. Then, the microfracture distribution of coal around the borehole, which characterizes the microfractures, was analyzed. Finally, the validity of the numerical results was verified. The results showed that, after the stress field of the coal around the borehole was adjusted, the force chain of the borehole was unevenly distributed... [more]

Keywords: hydrogen pre-cooling, hydrogen refueling process, hydrogen station, Joule–Thomson, pressure regulator, review, storage cascading, vehicle filling
Among the alternative fuels enabling the energy transition, hydrogen-based transportation is a sustainable and efficient choice. It finds application both in light-duty and heavy-duty mobility. However, hydrogen gas has unique qualities that must be taken into account when employed in such vehicles: high-pressure levels up to 900 bar, storage in composite tanks with a temperature limit of 85 °C, and a negative Joule−Thomson coefficient throughout a wide range of operational parameters. Moreover, to perform a refueling procedure that is closer to the driver’s expectations, a fast process that requires pre-cooling the gas to −40 °C is necessary. The purpose of this work is to examine the major phenomena that occur during the hydrogen refueling process by analyzing the relevant theory and existing modeling methodologies.

Benoît Genest, Guy Dumas
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Gurney flap, oscillating-foil turbine, URANS
Refinement of the performance of a fully constrained oscillating-foil turbine is carried out via the addition of passive double Gurney flaps. Flaps ranging from hGF=0.005c to 0.075c are added at the trailing edge of the NACA 0015 blade of turbines operating in high-efficiency regimes without leading-edge vortex shedding (LEVS). Performance improvements are determined using 2D numerical simulations with an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (URANS) approach. Based on a recent study of the double Gurney flaps on stationary foils, instantaneous power-extraction coefficients are analyzed and modifications of the foil’s kinematics are tested in order to fully benefit from the Gurney flaps’ performance improvements. Modifications to the pivot point location of the foil, to the pitch-heave phase, and to the pitching amplitude of the turbine are considered. Improvements are found for all turbine cases studied, including some of the previously optimal cases reported in the literature. The... [more]

Xian Huang, Zhehan Li
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity frequency regulation markets, MCP, multi-agent, PAB, pricing mechanisms
In the face of the new reform of China’s “unified electricity market”, the frequency regulation ancillary service market in each region of China is still divided between using the MCP and PAB pricing mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to explore the different impact the laws of the above two pricing mechanisms have on the frequency regulation market and to provide relevant suggestions for this electricity market reform. This paper simulates the competitive activities of the frequency regulation market based on the multi-agent simulation model, conducts a comparative experiment by changing the pricing mechanism to a single variable based on the rules of the Sichuan frequency regulation market in China, and concludes that MCP can make the market fast and stable, and that its market settlement price is low, which is suitable for the “unified electricity market”. Although PAB makes the market settlement price high, it can ensure the retention of high-performance units in the market,... [more]
An Improved Delayed Signal Cancelation for Three-Phase Grid Synchronization with DC Offset Immunity
Issam A. Smadi, Ibrahem E. Atawi, Ammar A. Ibrahim
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC offset rejection, delayed signal cancelation, phase-locked loop
The presence of the DC components in the grid voltage adversely affects the performance of the synchronization unit, causing oscillatory and offset errors in the estimated grid information. Several approaches were proposed to address the DC offset problem by incorporating an additional filtering stage to the synchronous reference frame phase-locked loop (SRF-PLL). Removing the DC offset using the modified delayed signal cancelation (MDSC) operator in the inner loop of the SRF-PLL shows a good DC offset elimination with a fast-dynamic response. However, neither a straightforward selection procedure for the MDSC parameters nor a general estimation technique for the grid information is provided. Hence, a generalization for the MDSC is proposed in this paper based on general mathematical expressions to cancel out the DC offset, while meanwhile estimating the grid parameters precisely and rapidly against any delay factor selection. Finally, comprehensive simulation and experimental results... [more]

Cengizhan Cengiz, Salih Ozen Unverdi
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: advanced injection, HDDI diesel engine, injection timing, PCCI combustion, spray inclusion angle
In three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, the effects of injection timing and spray inclusion angle (SIA) on performance and emissions of diffusion-controlled and Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (PCCI) combustion in part load for a heavy-duty direct injection (HDDI) diesel engine are studied. The start of injection (SOI) of a 146° SIA injector is varied between −70 and −10 °crank angle (°CA) after top dead center (ATDC). For −50 °CA ATDC SOI with various SIAs between 80° and 146°, PCCI combustion reduces mono-nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions significantly compared to conventional diesel combustion (CDC). Due to incomplete combustion in rich zones formed by droplet−cylinder wall interaction, early wide SIA injection deteriorates combustion efficiency (CE) and Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP) and increases soot and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions. Narrow-angle sprays interacting with the piston bowl elevate CE and IMEP and decrease soot and CO em... [more]

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Algorithms, artificial lift, Machine Learning, production data, supervised learning
This article presents a machine learning (ML) application to examine artificial lift (AL) selection, using only field production datasets from a Sudanese oil field. Five ML algorithms were used to develop a selection model, and the results demonstrated the ML capabilities in the optimum selection, with accuracy reaching 93%. Moreover, the predicted AL has a better production performance than the actual ones in the field. The research shows the significant production parameters to consider in AL type and size selection. The top six critical factors affecting AL selection are gas, cumulatively produced fluid, wellhead pressure, GOR, produced water, and the implemented EOR. This article contributes significantly to the literature and proposes a new and efficient approach to selecting the optimum AL to maximize oil production and profitability, reducing the analysis time and production losses associated with inconsistency in selection and frequent AL replacement. This study offers a univer... [more]

Keywords: adversarial attacks, clustering, deep learning, electricity fraud, ensemble learning, false data injection, privacy preservation, smart grid
In smart grids, homes are equipped with smart meters (SMs) to monitor electricity consumption and report fine-grained readings to electric utility companies for billing and energy management. However, malicious consumers tamper with their SMs to report low readings to reduce their bills. This problem, known as electricity fraud, causes tremendous financial losses to electric utility companies worldwide and threatens the power grid’s stability. To detect electricity fraud, several methods have been proposed in the literature. Among the existing methods, the data-driven methods achieve state-of-art performance. Therefore, in this paper, we study the main existing data-driven electricity fraud detection methods, with emphasis on their pros and cons. We study supervised methods, including wide and deep neural networks and multi-data-source deep learning models, and unsupervised methods, including clustering. Then, we investigate how to preserve the consumers’ privacy, using encryption and... [more]

Keywords: autoencoder, data-driven, deep learning, DL regression, electric vehicle, lithium-ion batteries, LSTM, Machine Learning, remaining useful life, RUL
Electric vehicles (EVs) are spreading fast as they promise to provide better performance and comfort, but above all, to help face climate change. Despite their success, their cost is still a challenge. Lithium-ion batteries are one of the most expensive EV components, and have become the standard for energy storage in various applications. Precisely estimating the remaining useful life (RUL) of battery packs can encourage their reuse and thus help to reduce the cost of EVs and improve sustainability. A correct RUL estimation can be used to quantify the residual market value of the battery pack. The customer can then decide to sell the battery when it still has a value, i.e., before it exceeds the end of life of the target application, so it can still be reused in a second domain without compromising safety and reliability. This paper proposes and compares two deep learning approaches to estimate the RUL of Li-ion batteries: LSTM and autoencoders vs. CNN and autoencoders. The autoencode... [more]

Keywords: communication optimization, graph partitioning, hexagonal core, Method of Characteristics, MPI
OpenMOC-HEX, a neutron transport calculation code with hexagonal modular ray tracing, has the capability of domain decomposition parallelism based on an MPI parallel programming model. In this paper, the optimization of inter-node communication was studied. Starting from the specific geometric arrangement of hexagonal reactors and the communication features of the Method of Characteristics, the computation and communication of all the hexagonal assemblies are mapped to a graph structure. Then, the METIS library is used for graph partitioning to minimize the inter-node communication under the premise of load balance on each node. Numerical results of an example hexagonal core with 1968 energy groups and 1027 assemblies demonstrate that the communication time is reduced by about 90%, and the MPI parallel efficiency is increased from 82.0% to 91.5%.
Water System Safety Analysis Model

April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: critical infrastructure, Markov processes, safety analysis, water supply, water supply system
The operation of a water supply system (WSS) is inextricably linked with the possibility of different types of failure. It is very common for these failures to be random in nature. The results of reliability studies carried out in many water supply systems revealed, for example, the possibility of incidental water pollution, power supply issues, failure in machinery, damage to water plants, or natural disasters. As a result of the WSS failure, we deal with a state of threat to safety (TSS) or a state of loss of safety (LSS). Using Markov processes, we developed a failure model of the WSS to determine the possibility that the system may find itself in different states of safety. As a result, a mathematical model using Markov processes has been proposed for each of these distinct states of safety (complete safety state—CSS; threat to safety state—TSS; and loss of safety state—LSS). The proposed approach in the water supply system will limit emergency states by optimizing working and repa... [more]

Keywords: artificial rabbits optimization, digital twin, hybrid PV-SOFC system, parameter identification, photovoltaic (PV) cell, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC)
Hydrogen (H2) energy is an ideal non-polluting renewable energy and can achieve long-term energy storage, which can effectively regulate the intermittence and seasonal fluctuation of solar energy. Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) can generate electricity from H2 with only outputs of water, waste heat, and almost no pollution. To solve the power generation instability and discontinuity of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, a hybrid PV-SOFC power generation system has become one feasible solution. The “digital twin”, which integrates physical systems and information technology, offers a new view to deal with the current problems encountered during smart energy development. In particular, an accurate and reliable system model is the basis for achieving this vision. As core components, the reliable modelling of the PV cells and fuel cells (FCs) is crucial to the whole hybrid PV-SOFC power generation system’s optimal and reliable operation, which is based on the reliable identification of unknow... Keywords: AEO-9-charged solution, charged and atomization mechanism, dust reduction mechanism, molecular simulation, spray droplet size
To effectively improve the dust reduction rate of fine dust and prevent the occurrence of secondary dust, surfactant-charged water mist dust reduction technology is proposed. First, the water mist induction-charged atomization mechanism was perfected by an induction-charged spray experiment and the optimal atomization-charged voltage was determined to be 10 kV. Second, by surface tension and spray experiments on AEO-9-charged solutions, the lower the surface tension and viscosity of the solution, the better the atomization effect; the best atomization solution was 10 kV and 0.02% AEO-9. Finally, according to an electrostatic adsorption experiment, it was identified that there was an electrostatic interaction between coal dust and charged droplets. The contact angle experiment showed that the contact angle of the AEO-9 droplets decreased by 68.44% compared with water after 3 s of contact with coal dust. The wetting effect of bituminous coal was significantly improved by adding AEO-9 to... [more]

Keywords: bearing lubricating water, numerical analysis, prototypical experiment, shielding induction motor, temperature field, turbulence models
Thermal design and the choice of turbulence models are crucial for motors. In this project, the geometrical model of the vertical shielding induction motor for a small nuclear main pump was established by SolidWorks software and the finite volume method was adopted to investigate the temperature of the motor, especially the temperatures of bearings lubricated water. To make the numerical simulation of flow and heat transfer in the rotating clearance of the shielding induction motor more accurate, the effects of four types of different two equation turbulence models on the temperature field of the shielding induction motor were studied. The results showed that different choices of turbulence models had little effect on the temperature of the winding insulation but influenced the temperature of the lower guide bearing lubricating water and the secondary cooling water outlet. The SST k-ω model showed the lowest relative error result of the temperature of the winding insulation and the bea... [more]
Optimization of Conductive Fins to Minimize UO2 Fuel Temperature and Radial Temperature Gradient
Kyle M. Paaren, Pavel Medvedev, Robert Mariani
April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: BISON, finite element methods, fuel performance, Simulation, UO2
To further the development of low-enriched uranium fuels, precedence has been placed on delivering the same amount of power while lowering the fuel temperature and radial temperature gradient. To address this, modeling efforts have resulted in a novel design featuring conductive fins of varying thermal conductivities and geometries inserted into the fuel matrix. These conductive inserts were not allowed to exceed 6% of the original fuel volume. This constraint was imposed due to other designs displacing 10% of fuel volume. A parametric study was performed that consisted of 2.56 million BISON simulations involving varying fin characteristics (i.e., fin thermal conductivity, number, and geometry) to determine the optimal geometric configuration for a desired amount of fuel volume displaced. The results from this study show that the thickness and length of each fin affect the fuel temperature and temperature gradient more than varying the number and thermal conductivity of the fins. April 18, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clustering, energy system modelling, energy system optimisation model, energyscope, sector-coupling, temporal aggregation, typical days, whole-energy system
Studying a large number of scenarios is necessary to consider the uncertainty inherent to the energy transition. In addition, the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources requires complex energy system models. Typical days clustering is a commonly used technique to ensure the computational tractability of energy system optimisation models, while keeping an hourly time step. Its capability to accurately approximate the full-year time series with a reduced number of days has been demonstrated (i.e., a priori evaluation). However, its impact on the results of the energy system model (i.e., a posteriori evaluation) is rarely studied and was never studied on a multi-regional whole-energy system. To address this issue, the multi-regional whole-energy system optimisation model, EnergyScope Multi-Cells, is used to optimise the design and operation of multiple interconnected regions. It is applied to nine diverse cases with different numbers of typical days. A bottom-up a posteriori... [more]

Keywords: accident-tolerant fuels, FeCrAl, MELCOR, QUENCH 19
To ensure the applicability of accident-tolerant fuels, their behaviors under various accidental conditions must be assessed. While the dependences of the behavior of single physical parameters can be investigated in single- or separate-effect experiments, and more complex phenomena can be investigated using integral-effect tests, the behavior of an entire system as complex as a nuclear power plant core must be investigated using computer code modeling. One of the most commonly used computer codes for the assessment of severe accidents is MELCOR 2.2. In version 18019, the authors enabled the modeling of the behavior of the nuclear fuel with FeCrAl cladding (namely, alloy B136Y3) for the first time, using the GOX model. The ability of this model to reasonably accurately predict the behavior of FeCrAl cladding in accident conditions with quenching was verified in this work by modeling the QUENCH-19 experiment carried out in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology on the QUENCH experimental... Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Carbon Dioxide, emission modelling, LPG, Machine Learning, portable emission measurement system, vehicle emission
One method to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicle exhaust is the use of liquified petroleum gas (LPG) fuel. The global use of this fuel is high in European countries such as Poland, Romania, and Italy. There are a small number of computational models for the purpose of estimating the emissions of LPG vehicles. This work is one of the first to present a methodology for developing microscale CO2 emission models for LPG vehicles. The developed model is based on data from road tests using the portable emission measurement system (PEMS) and on-board diagnostic (OBDII) interface. This model was created from a previous exploratory data analysis while using gradient-boosting machine learning methods. Vehicle velocity and engine RPM were chosen as the explanatory variables for CO2 prediction. The validation of the model indicates its good precision, while its use is possible for the analysis of continuous CO2 emissions and the creation of emission maps for environmental analyses in urban areas. Keywords: diffuse solar radiation, evolutionary algorithms, mathematical model, photovoltaic micro-grids
In light of the rapidly growing number of photovoltaic micro-grids, the modelling of their short-term power yields based on meteorological measurements is increasing in significance. This requires the knowledge of total and diffuse instantaneous solar radiation; however, most meteorological stations conduct actinometric measurements only with regard to total solar radiation, especially on a minute scale. This paper contains an analysis of the currently used PV cell mathematical model and suggests its modification aimed at calculating PV cell power with satisfactory accuracy, without the knowledge of diffuse solar radiation. Three function families were proposed to approximate the relationship between diffuse irradiance and the total and theoretical total irradiance variance for a cloudless sky. A program has been implemented to identify functions from the aforementioned function families. It leverages an evolution strategy algorithm and a fitness function based on the least-squares poi... Keywords: electron transport layer, hole transport layer, interface defects, perovskite solar cells, SCAPS-1D, triple cation
Compositional engineering is considered one of the recent interesting techniques used in the field of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this method, more than one material was used in a specific cation in the perovskite structure. This work aims to simulate the cesium-containing triple-cation perovskite (TCP) via the SCAPS-1D simulation program with a device structure of ITO/SnO2/TCP/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au. First, we studied the effect of interface defects on the PCSs with respect to experimental results and found that when no interface defects occur, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) reaches a value of 22.16% which is higher than the reported PCE, implying that the fabricated cell suffers from the interface defects as a main effect on cell degradation. Incorporating interface defects into the simulation results in a very good match between the experimental and simulated data with a PCE of 17.92%. Further, to provide possible routes to enhance the performance of the solar cell under inves... [more]

Keywords: ceiling radiant cooling panel, CFD simulation, cooling capacity, parametric analysis
A suspended open-type ceiling radiant cooling panel (CRCP) has been proposed recently. The main challenge is improving its cooling performance to overcome limitations for extensive use. Therefore, this study aims to optimize the design of CRCPs with curved and segmented structure to enhance heat transfer. A three-dimensional CFD model was developed to investigate the cooling capacity and heat transfer coefficient of the CRCPs installed inside a single enclosed room. Panel structure was determined based on four dependent parameters: the panel curvature width (L, m), the panel curvature radius (r, m), the void distance (d, m) between each panel or panel segment, and the panel coverage area (Ac, m2). The panel surface area (As, m2) and the ratio of panel curvature width to radius (L/r) were also examined. A total of 35 designs were compared under 7 different cooling load conditions, and 245 cases were carried out. The results show that the nominal cooling capacity and heat transfer coeffi... [more]
