April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blowout, combustor, damkohler number, fuel distribution ratio, operating condition
Aiming at the problem of the narrow combustion stability boundary, a conical swirler was designed and constructed based on the concept of fuel distribution. The blowout performance was studied at specified low operating conditions by a combination of experimental testing and numerical simulations. Research results indicate that the technique of the fuel distribution can enhance the combustion stability and widen the boundary of flameout within the range of testing conditions. The increase of the fuel distribution ratio improves the combustion stability but leads to an increase in NOx emission simultaneously. The simulation results show the increase of the fuel distribution ratio causes contact ratio increase in the area of lower reference velocity and gas temperature increase. The increased contact ratio and temperature contribute to the blowout performance enhancement, which is identical to the analysis result of the Damkohler number. The reported work in this paper has potential appl... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANFIS, forecasting, fuzzy rules, mathematical models, solar PV system
This paper contains studies of daily energy production forecasting methods for photovoltaic solar panels (PV panel) by using mathematical methods and fuzzy logic models. Mathematical models are based on analytic equations that bind PV panel power with temperature and solar radiation. In models based on fuzzy logic, we use Adaptive-network-based Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) and the zero-order Takagi-Sugeno model (TS) with specially selected linear and non-linear membership functions. The use of mentioned membership functions causes that the TS system is equivalent to a polynomial and its properties can be compared to other analytical models of PV panels found in the literature. The developed models are based on data from a real system. The accuracy of developed prognostic models is compared, and a prototype software implementing the best-performing models is presented. The software is written for a generic programmable logic controller (PLC) compliant to the IEC 61131-3 standard.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: averaged models, DC–DC converters, diode-transistor switch, electrothermal models, Modelling, power semiconductor de vices, SPICE
The problem of an influence of cooling conditions of power semiconductor devices on properties of selected DC−DC converters is considered. The new version of electrothermal average model of a diode-transistor switch for SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) is used in the investigations. This model makes it possible to take into account thermal inertia of semiconductor devices as well as mutual thermal interactions between these devices. The investigations are performed for boost and buck converters containing the power MOS (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) transistor and the diode. Computational results obtained using the proposed model are shown and discussed. Particularly, an influence of thermal phenomena in the diode and the power MOS transistor on the converters output voltage and internal temperature of the semiconductor devices is considered. The correctness of the selected results of computations was verified experimentally.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer, heat transfer, membrane vibration, numerical simulation, transformer oil
Membrane is the most important element of extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer sensors. Studying the relationship between working medium viscosity and membrane vibration characteristics are critical to the sensor design because the transformer oil viscosity will cause viscous loss during membrane vibration. The numerical investigation of membrane vibration characteristics in transformer oil is performed based on the finite element method. Besides, the effect of energy loss caused by viscosity is examined. It is firstly showed that the membrane has the highest sensitivity for the first-order vibration mode, and the transformer oil reduces the fundamental frequency by 60%. Subsequently, when viscosity and heat loss are considered, the amplitude is less than one-fifth of that without energy loss. The viscosity has a more significant effect on the velocity and temperature fields when the vibration frequency is close to the natural frequency. Finally, viscosity has a remarkable impact on th... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: contamination rain flashover, discharge behavior, power station post insulator, suspended water-drop
Rain is one of the dominant meteorological factors threatening the outdoor insulation performance of ultra-high voltage (UHV) power stations. Discharge occurring on the polluted surface of post insulators in rain has always been a major concern of power stations. Previous studies have shown that suspended water droplets on the shed edge play an important role in the rain flashover process. In this work, artificial contamination rain flashover tests were carried out in a laboratory on a UHV DC (Ultra-High Voltage Direct Current) large-diameter composite post insulator, which had a rod diameter of 625 mm and alternating sheds (105 mm and 75 mm for larger and smaller shed overhang, respectively). The discharge mechanism was analyzed base on the observation of discharge phenomenon of suspended water-drops on the shed edge. Moreover, simulation models by COMSOL Multiphysics were established to investigate the electric field around sheds and suspended water-drops, as well as the shape change... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: full-bridge circuit, high-voltage direct current transmission, modular multilevel converters, multiterminal grid
The concept of high-voltage DC transmission using a multiterminal configuration is presently a central topic of research and investment due to rekindled interest in renewable energy resource integration. Moreover, great attention is given to fault analysis, which leads to the necessity of developing proper tools that enable proficient dynamic simulations. This paper leverages models and control system design techniques and demonstrates their appropriateness for scenarios in which faults are applied. Furthermore, this paper relies on full-bridge submodule topologies in order to underline the increase in resilience that such a configuration brings to the multiterminal DC network, after an unexpected disturbance. Therefore, strong focus is given to fault response, considering that converters use a full-bridge topology and that overhead power lines connect the terminals.

Keywords: decarbonization, fuel cell trucks, green hydrogen, heavy-duty vehicles, hydrogen economy, hydrogen transitions, modelling hydrogen transitions, New Zealand, system dynamics modelling
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector is known to be an important contribution to climate change mitigation. Some parts of the transport sector are particularly difficult to decarbonize; this includes the heavy-duty vehicle sector, which is considered one of the “hard-to-abate” sectors of the economy. Transitioning from diesel trucks to hydrogen fuel cell trucks has been identified as a potential way to decarbonize the sector. However, the current and future costs and efficiencies of the enabling technologies remain unclear. In light of these uncertainties, this paper investigates the investments required to decarbonize New Zealand’s heavy-duty vehicle sector with green hydrogen. By combining system dynamics modelling literature and hydrogen transition modelling literature a customized methodology is developed for modelling hydrogen transitions with system dynamics modelling. Results are presented in terms of the investments required to purchase the hydrogen product... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: embedded discrete fracture network, enhanced geothermal system, fracture network connectivity, numerical simulation, thermal breakthrough
Hydraulic fracturing is usually employed to create a complex fracture network to enhance heat extraction in the development of an enhanced geothermal system. The heat extraction depends on the heat conduction from the rock matrix to the flowing fractures and the heat convection through a complex fracture network. Therefore, the geometries of the fracture network have important influences on the thermal breakthrough. In this paper, a hydro-thermal coupling mathematical model considering a complex fracture network is established. The embedded discrete fracture model is adopted to explicitly model the individual fracture on the mass flow and heat transfer. The model is validated by analytical solutions. Fracture network parameters are changed systematically to investigate the effects of fracture network distribution including regular and complex shape on the thermal production performance. The results show that the increase of producing pressure differential, fracture number, and conducti... [more]

Keywords: bi-fluid, electrical power, fins, PV/T water collector, thermal power
Photovoltaic (PV) modules suffer from a reduction of electric conversion due to the high operating temperatures of the PV cells. Hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) technology represents an effective solution for cooling the PV cells. This paper discusses a theoretical study on a novel bi-fluid PV/T collector. One dimensional steady-state numerical model is developed, and computer simulations are performed using MATLAB. This numerical model is based on a pilot PV/T plant, installed in the Campus of the University of Catania, and was experimentally validated. The design of the proposed bi-fluid PV/T is based on a commercial WISC PV/T collector, to which are added an air channel, an aluminum absorber with fins, and a layer of thermal insulation. The analysis of the thermal behavior of the proposed collector is carried out as a function of the flow rate of the two heat transfer fluids (air and water). Finally, the comparative analysis between the conventional water-based PV/T collector, na... [more]

Chenyang Zhang, Hongzhou Jiang
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 6-DOF parallel mechanism, dynamic model, extended Hamilton’s principle, modal analysis, rigid-flexible
In view of the problems encountered in previous hydraulic 6-DOF parallel mechanism projects, flexible modes appear that the actual natural frequencies of x and y degrees of freedom of the parallel mechanism are lower than those obtained through calculation. The phenomenon above not only decreases the dynamic response characteristics of the mechanism, but also leads to doubts about the actual performance of the mechanism. The real reason for the phenomenon above is solved in this paper. First the flexible structure of the hydraulic cylinder is analyzed and simplified, and then the dynamic model of the rigid-flexible 6-DOF parallel mechanism is established with the extended Hamilton’s principle. Finally the rigid-flexible modes are calculated with the dynamic model obtained, further analysis and verification with a simulation model and an experimental platform are also conducted. Results show that the phenomenon of the flexible modes is mainly caused by the O-rings of the step-seals of t... [more]

Keywords: air expansion, fluid power, hybrid systems, noise reduction, pneumatics, SPL measurement
In this paper, we demonstrate how to reduce the noise level of expanded air from pneumatic tools. Instead of a muffler, we propose the expanded collecting system, where the air expands through the pneumatic tube and expansion collector. We have elaborated a mathematical model which illustrates the dynamics of the air flow, as well as the acoustic pressure at the end of the tube. The computational results were compared with experimental data to check the air dynamics and sound pressure. Moreover, the study presents the methodology of noise measurement generated in a pneumatic screwdriver in a quiet back room and on a window-fitting stand in a production hall. In addition, we have performed noise measurements for the pneumatic screwdriver and the pneumatic screwdriver on an industrial scale. These measurements prove the noise reduction of the pneumatic tools when the expanded collecting system is used. When the expanded collecting system was applied to the screwdriver, the measured Sound... [more]

Keywords: photovoltaics, PV system modeling, PV system performance, reanalysis data, remote sensing, shading, snow, snow losses, soiling
Snow-induced photovoltaic (PV)-energy losses (snow losses) in snowy and cold locations vary up to 100% monthly and 34% annually, according to literature. Levels that illustrate the need for snow loss estimation using validated models. However, to our knowledge, all these models build on limited numbers of sites and winter seasons, and with limited climate diversity. To overcome this limitation in underlying statistics, we investigate the estimation of snow losses using a PV system’s yield data together with freely available gridded weather datasets. To develop and illustrate this approach, 263 sites in northern Sweden are studied over multiple winters. Firstly, snow-free production is approximated by identifying snow-free days and using corresponding data to infer tilt and azimuth angles and a snow-free performance model incorporating shading effects, etc. This performance model approximates snow-free monthly yields with an average hourly standard deviation of 6.9%, indicating decent a... Keywords: AC drives, chokes, conducted noise emissions, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter, EMC filter, power cable, SPICE simulations, transmission line
EMC simulations are an indispensable tool to analyze EMC noise propagation in power converters and to assess the best filtering options. In this paper, we first show how to set up EMC simulations of power converters and then we demonstrate their use on the example of an industrial AC motor drive. Broadband models of key power converter components are reviewed and combined into a circuit model of the complete power converter setup enabling detailed EMC analysis. The approach is demonstrated by analyzing the conducted noise emissions of a 75 kW power converter driving a 45 kW motor. Based on the simulations, the critical impedances, the dominant noise propagation, and the most efficient filter component and location within the system are identified. For the analyzed system, maxima of EMC noise are caused by resonances of the long motor cable and can be accurately predicted as functions of type, length, and layout of the motor cable. The common-mode noise at the LISN is shown to have a do... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clustered wind farms, Computational Fluid Dynamics, VAWT
The effect of separation distance between turbines on overall cluster performance were simulated using computational fluid dynamics software and we found that at a distance equivalent to two rotors, there was an improvement of +8.06% in the average performance of the cluster compared to a single, isolated turbine. A very small improvement in performance was noted at the equivalent distance of 12 rotor diameters. The performances of three individual turbines in pyramid- and inverted pyramid-shaped vertical axis wind turbine clustered farm configurations with varying oblique angles at a fixed spacing of two equivalent rotor diameters were also investigated. The design experiment involves the simulation of test cases with oblique angles from 15° to 165° at an interval of 15° and the turbines were allowed to rotate through 18 full rotations. The results show that the left and right turbines increase in performance as the angle with respect to the streamline axis increases, with the excepti... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer, ice rink, optimal floor design
A good design of the ice rink floor could save a great deal of capital and operational costs for hockey arenas. This ice rink floor design focuses on a cost-effective tube arrangement and an optimal concrete coverage over the tubes that could provide sufficient heat transfer rate between the coolant and the freezing ice. This paper reports a theoretical model to simulate the heat transfer characteristic of a different tube diameter, spacing distance, and thickness of the concrete coverage of the tubes of an ice rink. In addition, calcium chloride and ethylene glycol with water solutions are compared to figure out the pros and cons of these two secondary coolants. This model prediction is compared to the typical ice floor arrangement in order to determine the best floor construction scenario.

Keywords: demand-side management, dynamic simulation, power-to-heat
The increasing share of volatile, renewable energies, such as wind and solar power, leads to challenges in the stabilization of power grids and requires more flexibility in future energy systems. This article addresses the flexibilization of the consumer side and presents a simulation-based method for the technical and economic investigation of energy flexibility measures in industrial steam supply systems. The marketing of three different energy-flexibility measures—bivalence, inherent energy storage and adjusting process parameters—both at the spot market and at the balancing power market, are investigated from a technical as well as an economic point of view. Furthermore, the simulation-based methodology also considers pressure and temperature fluctuation induced by energy-flexibility measures. First, different energy-flexibility measures for industrial steam supply systems are introduced. Then, the physical modeling of the steam generation, distribution, and consumption as well as... Keywords: ABB hybrid HVDC breaker, HVDC breaker, power loss
Several types of high voltage direct current (HVDC) breakers have been introduced and commercialized. Each of them has advantages and disadvantages. Among them, the hybrid HVDC breaker is highly successful. One of the most important concerns that the hybrid HVDC breaker has faced is high power loss throughout its fault current breaking process. The hybrid HVDC breaker comprises a high voltage bidirectional main HVDC breaker. A significant number of electronic switches need to be connected in a series where anti-parallel diodes are essentially embraced. During fault inception, a number of series solid-state switches and a number of series diodes dramatically increase the power loss of the main breaker. This study, firstly, studies the power loss of the hybrid HVDC breaker and later develops a structure of a full-bridge hybrid breaker (FBHB) to reduce the losses of the current structure both in the normal and fault protection states. In this paper simulations are done based on PSCAD. In... [more]

Keywords: burnup, decay, transmutation
The theoretical aspects of the linear chain method for the numerical modelling of nuclear transmutation systems, and particularly regarding the transmutation trajectory analysis (TTA), are presented. The theoretical background of the TTA method, as an advanced version of the linear chain method, with the detailed description of the applied mathematical set-up and graphical visualisation of transformation chains, is shown. As the TTA method was initially developed at the AGH University of Science and Technology almost 25 years ago, several numerical implementations were introduced worldwide, yet the mathematical improvements or alternative forms of solutions and numerical algorithms were reported since then. The method was also implemented and tested by different research groups, also in confrontation with alternative approaches to the nuclear transformation problem known as the matrix method. The aim of the paper is to present the background of the developed method and its advantages,... [more]

Keywords: auxiliary feedwater system, cavitation, Computational Fluid Dynamics, in-service testing, multi-stage orifice, multiphase flow
Flow leakage due to cavitation erosion occurred at the socket welding part downstream of the multi-stage orifice installed in the auxiliary feedwater (AFW) pump recirculation line of the domestic nuclear power plant (NPP). To assess the adequacy of the changed operating flow rate proposed by a domestic NPP operator as the corrective measure concerning the flow leakage in the AFW pump recirculation line, the pattern of the cavitation flow in the eight-stage orifice and the connecting pipe depending on the magnitude of the operating flow rate was predicted by using ANSYS CFX R19.1. Additionally, using ANSYS Mechanical, the structural analysis was conducted under the same operating flow rate condition used for the flow analysis, and the structural integrity was evaluated for the allowable stress. Based on the flow analysis results, it was found that the operating flow rate was the main factor to influence the cavitation behavior inside the multi-stage orifice, and cavitation flow still ha... Adnan Aslam Noon, Man-Hoe Kim
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cavitation erosion, coalesced effect, Computational Fluid Dynamics, hydroelectric power turbine, sediment erosion
Sediment and cavitation erosion of the hydroelectric power turbine components are the fundamental problems in the rivers of Himalayas and Andes. In the present work, the latest research conducted in both the fields by various investigators and researchers are discussed and critically analyzed at different turbine components. Analysis shows that both types of erosion depends on flow characteristics, surface, and erodent material properties. Design optimization tools, coalesced effect (CE) of sediment and cavitation erosion and well conducted experiments will yield results that are beneficial for erosion identification and reduction. Although some researchers have done experimental work on the coalesced effect (CE) of sediment and cavitation erosion, very limited Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) work is available in literature. The present research work will be beneficial for practitioners and researchers in the future to address the erosion problem successfully.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, loss breakdown, partial admission, turbine comparison, underwater vehicles
The metal fueled steam Rankine cycle has been successfully applied to Unmanned Underwater Vehicles. However, the suitable turbine configuration is yet to be determined for this particular application. In this paper, the mean-line design approach based on the existing empirical correlations is first described. The corresponding partial admission axial and radial inflow turbines are then preliminarily designed. To assess the performance of designed turbines, the three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and steady-state structural analysis are performed. The results show that axial turbines are more compact than radial inflow turbines at the same output power. In addition, since radial inflow turbines can reduce the exit energy loss, this benefit substantially offsets the increment of the rotor losses created by the low speed ratios and supersonic rotor inlet velocity. On the contrary, due to the large volume of dead gas and strong transient effects caused by the h... [more]

Keywords: interpolation, mathematical modeling, mineral oil, natural ester, power transformer
Increasing usage of petroleum-based insulating oils in electrical apparatus has led to increase in pollution and, at the same time, the oils adversely affect the life of electrical apparatus. This increases the demand of Mineral Oil (MO), which is on the verge of extinction and leads to conducting tests on natural esters. This work discusses dielectric endurance of Marula Oil (MRO), a natural ester modified using Conductive Nano Particle (CNP) to replace petroleum-based dielectric oils for power transformer applications. The Al2O3 is a CNP that has a melting point of 2072 °C and a low charge relaxation time that allows time to quench free electrons during electrical discharge. Al2O3 is blended with the MRO and Mineral Oil (MO) in different concentrations. The measured dielectric properties are transformed into mathematical equations using the Lagrange interpolation polynomial functions and compared with the predicted values either using Gaussian or Fourier distribution functions. A Solution to Pressure Equation with Its Boundary Condition of Combining Tangential and Normal Pressure Relations
Hui Xiao, Wei Liu
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: algorithm, circular tube, pressure boundary condition, pressure equation, pressure-velocity coupling method
Pressure is a physical quantity that is indispensable in the study of transport phenomena. Previous studies put forward a pressure constitutive law and constructed a partial differential equation on pressure to study the convection with or without heat and mass transfer. In this paper, a numerical algorithm was proposed to solve this pressure equation by coupling with the Navier-Stokes equation. To match the pressure equation, a method of dealing with pressure boundary condition was presented by combining the tangential and normal direction pressure relations, which should be updated dynamically in the iteration process. Then, a solution to this pressure equation was obtained to bridge the gap between the mathematical model and a practical numerical algorithm. Through numerical verification in a circular tube, it is found that the proposed boundary conditions are applicable. The results demonstrate that the present pressure equation well describes the transport characteristics of the f... [more]

Keywords: 2D motion-converting mechanism, CFD simulations, churning losses, experimental certification
In recent years, two dimensional (2D) hydraulic components have significantly flourished. After a brief development introduction of the 2D pump and 2D flowmeter, it could be concluded that the churning loss, which is caused by the rotational motion of 2D motion-converting mechanisms, has an increasing effect on reducing energy losses. This paper first presents a new 2D motion-converting mechanism and introduces its structure and working principles. To compare it with the former 2D motion-converting mechanism, the same working conditions were applied when designing the new one. Afterward, the generated churning loss by the active parts of the mechanism, such as the new rotor, was well studied by establishing a simplified CFD simulation model and was also verified to have a smaller churning loss than that of the former mechanism. As another key simulation result, the influence of the axial motion of the new rotor was found to be negligible for the churning loss even when the rotational s... [more]
