Pulp and Paper Industry: Decarbonisation Technology Assessment to Reach CO2 Neutral Emissions—An Austrian Case Study
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: abatement technology, CO2 emissions reduction, greenhouse gas emissions, pulp and paper sector
The pulp and paper (P&P) sector is a dynamic manufacturing industry and plays an essential role in the Austrian economy. However, the sector, which consumes about 20 TWh of final energy, is responsible for 7% of Austria’s industrial CO2 emissions. This study, intending to assess the potential for improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions in the Austrian context in the P&P sector, uses a bottom-up approach model. The model is applied to analyze the energy consumption (heat and electricity) and CO2 emissions in the main processes, related to the P&P production from virgin or recycled fibers. Afterward, technological options to reduce energy consumption and fossil CO2 emissions for P&P production are investigated, and various low-carbon technologies are applied to the model. For each of the selected technologies, the potential of emission reduction and energy savings up to 2050 is estimated. Finally, a series of low-carbon technology-based scenarios are developed and evaluated. T... [more]

Dependence of N2O/NO Decomposition and Formation on Temperature and Residence Time in Thermal Reactor
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: argon (Ar) ambient, GRI-Mech 3.0, nitric oxide (NOx), nitrous oxide (N2O), rate of progress, residence time, thermal decomposition
Nitrogen dioxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas that is harmful to the ozone layer and contributes to global warming. Many other nitrogen oxide emissions are controlled using the selective non-catalytic reaction (SNCR) process, but N2O reduction methods are few. To avoid future air pollution problems, N2O reduction from industrial sources is essential. In this study, a N2O decomposition and NO formation under an argon atmospheric N2O gas mixture were observed in a lab-scale SNCR system. The reaction rate and mechanism of N2O were calculated using a reaction path analyzer (CHEMKIN-PRO). The residence time of the gas mixture and the temperature in the reactor were set as experimental variables. The results confirmed that most of the N2O was converted to N2 and NO. The change in the N2O reduction rate increased with the residence time at 1013 and 1113 K, but decreased at 1213 K due to the inverse reaction. NO concentration increased with the residence time at 1013 and 1113 K, but decreased at... [more]

Novel Hybrid Reactive Distillation with Extraction and Distillation Processes for Furfural Production from an Actual Xylose Solution
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: extraction-distillation, industrial furfural process, lignocellulosic biomass, Process Intensification, Reactive Distillation
Furfural is only derived from lignocellulosic biomass and is an important chemical used in the plastics, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. The existing industrial furfural production process, involving reaction and purification steps, suffers from a low yield and intensive energy use. Hence, major improvements are needed to sustainably upgrade the furfural production process. In this study, the conventional furfural process based on a continuous stirred tank reactor and distillation columns was designed and optimized from an actual aqueous xylose solution via a biomass pretreatment step. Subsequently, a reactive distillation (RD) and extraction/distillation (ED) configuration was proposed for the reaction and purification steps, respectively, to improve the process efficiency. RD can remove furfural instantly from the reactive liquid phase and can separate heavy components from the raw furfural stream, while the ED configuration with toluene and butyl chloride used as extrac... Tidal Stream vs. Wind Energy: The Value of Cyclic Power When Combined with Short-Term Storage in Hybrid Systems
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Alderney, hybrid system, intermittency, tidal stream energy, wind energy
This study quantifies the technical, economic and environmental performance of hybrid systems that use either a tidal stream or wind turbine, alongside short-term battery storage and back-up oil generators. The systems are designed to partially displace oil generators on the island of Alderney, located in the British Channel Islands. The tidal stream turbine provides four power generation periods per day, every day. This relatively high frequency power cycling limits the use of the oil generators to 1.6 GWh/year. In contrast, low wind resource periods can last for days, forcing the wind hybrid system to rely on the back-up oil generators over long periods, totalling 2.4 GWh/year (50% higher). For this reason the tidal hybrid system spends £0.25 million/year less on fuel by displacing a greater volume of oil, or £6.4 million over a 25 year operating life, assuming a flat cost of oil over this period. The tidal and wind hybrid systems achieve an oil displacement of 78% and 67% respective... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electricity production, environmental engineering, fuel cell, use of by-product, waste engine oil
New methods for the use of waste products as input for other technologies are a constant subject of research efforts. One such product is waste engine oil. Due to the constantly increasing number of motor vehicles in the world, the recycling or application of engine oils for energy production purposes is currently of considerable importance. This paper contains research regarding the analysis of the electro-oxidation potential of waste engine oil, and thus the possibility of using such oil as a material in fuel cells. The research demonstrates the basic possibility of the electro-oxidation of this oil emulsion on a platinum electrode in an acid electrolyte (aqueous solution of H2SO4). It was shown that in the temperature range of 20−80 °C, the electro-oxidation of the waste engine oil emulsion occurred for all emulsion concentrations (0.005%, 0.010%, 0.030%, and 0.060% of the reactor volume). The maximum current density obtained in the measurements was 21 mA·cm−2 at the temperature of... [more]

Fault Coverage-Aware Metrics for Evaluating the Reliability Factor of Solar Tracking Systems
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: availability, fault coverage, solar reliability factor, solar test factor, solar tracking systems
This paper presents a mathematical approach for determining the reliability of solar tracking systems based on three fault coverage-aware metrics which use system error data from hardware, software as well as in-circuit testing (ICT) techniques, to calculate a solar test factor (STF). Using Euler’s named constant, the solar reliability factor (SRF) is computed to define the robustness and availability of modern, high-performance solar tracking systems. The experimental cases which were run in the Mathcad software suite and the Python programming environment show that the fault coverage-aware metrics greatly change the test and reliability factor curve of solar tracking systems, achieving significantly reduced calculation steps and computation time.

Influence of Molecule Structure on Lightning Impulse Breakdown of Ester Liquids
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: breakdown, ester liquids, lightning impulse, natural ester, streamer
Ester liquids are environmentally friendly insulating oils, and they can be used as an alternative to mineral oil in transformers, even though in most countries spills of ester oils must be treated like spills of mineral oil. Furthermore, the breakdown characteristics of ester liquids are worse than those of mineral oils in heterogeneous electric fields. In this paper, we present a comprehensive experimental research on both positive and negative lightning impulse breakdown properties in point-plane geometries with gaps varying from 1 mm to 50 mm. The breakdown voltages and streamer velocities of five kinds of ester liquids, including natural ester, synthetic ester, and three kinds of single component esters have been measured. The results show that the double bonds have no effect on the breakdown voltage of ester liquids. The average streamer velocities of mono-esters are faster than that of other esters under positive polarity, and the breakdown voltages of all esters are close.

Keywords: clustering, Optimization, rural electrification, secondary substations, sustainable development
The scientific community is active in developing new models and methods to help reach the ambitious target set by UN SDGs7: universal access to electricity by 2030. Efficient planning of distribution networks is a complex and multivariate task, which is usually split into multiple subproblems to reduce the number of variables. The present work addresses the problem of optimal secondary substation siting, by means of different clustering techniques. In contrast with the majority of approaches found in the literature, which are devoted to the planning of MV grids in already electrified urban areas, this work focuses on greenfield planning in rural areas. K-means algorithm, hierarchical agglomerative clustering, and a method based on optimal weighted tree partitioning are adapted to the problem and run on two real case studies, with different population densities. The algorithms are compared in terms of different indicators useful to assess the feasibility of the solutions found. The algo... [more]

Investigation of Environmental Leaching Behavior of an Innovative Method for Landfilling of Waste Incineration Air Pollution Control Residues
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cement substitute, Energy, heavy metal stabilization, incineration residues
Waste incineration air pollution control (APC) residues require pretreatment before landfilling because these types of residues encompass pollutants from an incineration gas stream. The environmental concerns of APC residues consist of a risk of leaching and subsequent release of potentially harmful substances that occur under environmental exposure. The stabilization/solidification (S/S) method of incineration residues is one of the most applied technologies for hazardous incineration residues. Portland cement is commonly used as a binder material in S/S for pollutant encapsulation, in order to change the hydrological characteristics of the landfilled material. Based on previous research, an innovative S/S method for APC residues is investigated, meant to replace Portland cement with cement-like material made from lignite fly ash (FA). To do this, a lab-scale landfill was created through the promoted S/S method and exposed to the environment for 12 months. Thus, this article assesses... [more]

Model-Based Design of a Pseudo-Cogenerative Heating System for e-Boat Battery Cold Start
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Batteries, energy management, environmental factors, Modelling, power conversion, thermal management
Full-electric boats are an expression of recent advancements in the area of vessel electrification. The installed batteries can suffer from poor cold-start performance, especially in the frigid season and at higher latitudes, leading to driving power limitations immediately after startup. At state, the leading solution is to adopt a dedicated heater placed on the common cooling/heating circuit; this implies poor volume, weight, and cost figures, given the very limited duty cycle of such a part. The Heater-in-Converter (HiC) technology allows removing this specialized component, exploiting the power electronics converters already available on board: HiC modulates their efficiency to produce valuable heat (pseudo-cogeneration). In this work, we use the model-based approach to design this system, which requires heating power minimization to fulfill power electronics limitations, while guaranteeing the user-expected startup time to full power. A multistage model is used to get the yearly v... [more]

The new generation of capsules that circulate through vacuum tubes at speeds up to 1200 km/h, which is being developed, demands communication systems that can operate at these speeds with high capacity and quality of service. Currently, the two technologies available are the new generation of 802.11ax networks and 5G NR. Using these technologies at such high speeds in a confined environment requires a careful study and design of the configuration of the network and optimization of the physical interface. This paper describes the requirements for critical and business communications, proposing a WLAN and 5G network design based on the analysis of the propagation characteristics and constraints of vacuum tubes and using propagation measurements and simulations made in similar environments at frequencies of 2.5/5.7/24 GHz. These measurements and simulations show that propagation losses in this environment are low (4−5 dB/100 m), as a consequence of the guided propagation, so that the use... [more]

What Is the Effect of Outer Jacket Degradation on the Communication Parameters? A Case Study of the Twisted Pair Cable Applied in the Railway Industry
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: aging effect, outer jacket degradation, predictive maintenance, railway industry, wire communication
Among the variety of problems encountered in transmission lines, the outer jacket degradation-derived faults of communication cables in railway applications have a significant impact on the transmission line parameters, especially if the cables are exposed to extremely varying environmental conditions, such as temperature deviation and humidity changes. In this paper, an advanced model of a twisted pair communication cable is proposed, together with approximated degradation functions for distributed parameters of the model, such as the shielding inductance, resistance, and capacitance per meter of cable length. This allows for gathering the distributed parameters for the proposed model under specific environmental conditions. The degradation functions for the parameters have been identified and compared with simulation results, including the communication speed and frequency band, and it has been confirmed that the transmission reliability depends on the cable condition. Subject: Environment
Keywords: environment, injection water treatment, offshore oil and gas industry, online monitoring, total suspended solids, water quality
The importance and awareness of accurate online water quality measurements increase every year in the oil and gas sector, whether it is for reducing oil discharge, preparing produced water for reinjection, or improving operational performance. For online measurement techniques to yield valuable analytical information, an understanding of their outputs must be established. Produced water reinjection has gained increasing attention in the last decade, as it can minimize negative environmental impacts by reducing oil discharge and has the potential to extend the economic life of reservoirs. To increase the amount of produced water that can be reinjected, the water must be maintained at a sufficient quality to prevent unintended formation damage. This review paper thoroughly describes different water quality issues related to suspended solids that can occur in an injection water treatment system and how the issues are often interlinked. Solar-Powered Charging Networks for Electric Vehicles
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electric vehicles, electricity, Paris Agreement, solar, supply and demand, sustainable development, Wind
The cost of solar-generated electricity and battery costs have been decreasing significantly. These developments can be combined to introduce solar-powered charging networks with demand management prices (DMP) to enable electric vehicle (EV) customers to help utilities to manage renewable energy. As solar-generated electricity becomes the cheapest source of power, the need to increase demand for electricity during the day can be met by charging EVs at an attractive DMP in parking lots with solar panels and charging stations that are connected to the electrical grid. The demand for electricity can be managed and controlled by the utility with the goal of increasing demand for power as needed so that all electricity that is generated can be sold. The proposal is to introduce a new DMP rate that is only implemented when the utility wants to increase demand and sell power at this low rate in order to make full use of the supply. As utilities strive to reach 100% renewable electrical power... [more]

Evaluating the Use of Displacement Ventilation for Providing Space Heating in Unoccupied Periods Using Laboratory Experiments, Field Tests and Numerical Simulations
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: classroom, CO2 concentrations, indoor air quality, preheating, stratification, thermal comfort
Displacement ventilation is a proven method of providing conditioned air to enclosed spaces with the aim to deliver good air quality and thermal comfort while reducing the amount of energy required to operate the system. Until now, the practical applications of displacement ventilation have been exclusive to providing ventilation and cooling to large open spaces with high ceilings. The provision of heating through displacement ventilation has traditionally been discouraged, out of concern that warm air supplied at the floor level would rise straight to the ceiling level without providing heat to the occupied space. Hence, a separate heating system is regularly integrated with the displacement ventilation in cold climates, increasing the cost and energy use of the system. This paper goes beyond the common industry practice and explores the possibility of using displacement ventilation to provide heating without any additional heating system. It reports on experimental investigations con... [more]
