Comparative Research of Thermochemical Conversion Properties of Coarse-Energy Crops

In the world, as in Lithuania, there is a costant search for new crops suitable for energy conversion. The coarse-energy crops and their biomass studied for this paper were assessed in a comprehensive manner, i.e., not only their calorific value and ash content but also their ash melting properties and pollutants emitted during the thermochemical conversion. The calorific value of energy crops varies from 17.92 ± 0.32 to 18.50 ± 0.66 MJ kg−1 and decreases in the following order: A. dubia > M. giganteus > C. sativa. Ash content varies from 1.51 ± 0.03 to 3.36 ± 0.23% and decreases in the following order: C. sativa > A. dubia > M. giganteus. The lowest primary ash deformation (648 ± 8 °C) was recorded for C. sativa. Utilizing underground coal gasification cavities for carbon capture and sequestration provides a potentially economic and sustainable solution to a vexing environmental and energy problem. The thermal influence on creep properties and long-term permeability evolution around the underground gasification chamber is a key issue in UCG-CCS operation in containing fugitive emissions. We complete multi-step loading and unloading creep tests with permeability measurement at confining stresses of 30 MPa on pre-cracked sandstone specimens thermally heat-treated to 250, 500, 750 and 1000 °C. In recent years, the use of biodegradable fluids as liquid insulation for distribution and power transformers is spreading. The main biodegradable fluids used are natural and synthetic esters, although biodegradable hydrocarbons have been recently proposed. Biodegradable fluids have a much lower environmental impact than mineral oil, limiting the risk of soil contamination in leaks, which makes them a suitable solution for applications such as offshore transformers or railway transformers. Additionally, these fluids have a higher flash point than conventional mineral oils, which dramatically reduces the risk of fire and collateral damage derived from explosion and fire. A new DC fault current limiter (FCL)-based circuit breaker (CB) for DC microgrid (MG) clusters is proposed in this paper. The analytical expressions of the DC fault current of a bidirectional interlink DC/DC converter in the interconnection line of two nearby DC MGs are analyzed in detail. Meanwhile, a DC fault clearing solution (based on using a DC FCL in series with a DC circuit breaker) is proposed. This structure offers low complexity, cost, and power losses. To assess the performance of the proposed method, time-domain simulation studies are carried out on a test DC MG cluster in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. The results of the proposed analytical expressions are compared with simulation results. A significant challenge for the DSO (Distribution System Operator) will be to choose the optimum strategy for flexibility service in the LV area with high RES (renewable energy sources) penetration. To this end, a representative LV grid operated in Poland was selected for analysis. Three research scenarios with RES generation were presented in the range of 1−8 kW for the power factor from 0.9 to 1. The grid PV capacity was determined for four load profiles. Based on this factor, optimum RES volume management service types were determined. This study investigated the evaporative heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop characteristics of R-1234yf in a horizontal tube with an inner diameter of 6.95 mm under various experimental conditions. The heat transfer coefficient increased with an increase in quality but showed a sharp decrease in the high-quality area. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient increased as the mass flux, heat flux, and saturation temperature increased. Although R-1234yf and R-134a presented similar heat transfer coefficients, that of R-134a was higher. The pressure drop increased with an increase in the quality and mass flux but decreased with an increase in the saturation temperature. The pressure drop of R-134a was larger than that of R-1234yf. Calculation and measurement of the overhead power lines electrical parameters is common practice in today’s electrical engineering industry; however, there is very little data to actually compare these two approaches because measured data in such detail are mostly unavailable for academic purposes. Poland has had a total of 70 mines, but now more than half of them is out of operation. This mining closure raises with respect to the environment and unemployment. Innovative technology is needed to overcome the problems that arise and could simultaneously make use of abandoned mine infrastructure. The increased electricity generation coming from renewable energy, which produces fluctuating and intermittent energy for the electric power system, causes frequency problems such that energy storage technologies are needed. Abandoned mines can be used for the implementation of energy storage plants. This paper explores the possibility of using abandoned mines in Poland for electrical energy storage. Closed mines can be used to store clean and flexible energy. This idea has the potential to support sustainable economic development within the community following mine closure in Poland.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology is used to conduct the study. The school system includes several activities and processes clustered in three subsystems: management of the school building, training and learning activities (T&L) and mobility and transport (M&T). A detailed primary data inventory of energy and resources consumption was collected in five schools located in Spain and Portugal. An Innovative Design of a Solar Double-Chimney Power Plant for Electricity Generation

The present work involves a new and novel upgrading design to the classical solar chimney power plant (SCPP) structure. The SCPP design was modified by adding a co-centric secondary external chimney to the SCPP structure to enhance energy production. In the new improved design, named the solar double-chimney power plant (SDCPP), the internal chimney, operates like a traditional SCPP to produce electricity during the daytime whereas the secondary external chimney operates as 10 cooling towers (CT) in a series. Each CT is equipped with a turbine and water sprinklers for further energy production. The new design offers the operation of the SCPP during the day and the continuous operation of the CT (day-and-night). A mathematical model that includes the energy and mass balance equations of the system was built using MATLAB.
