Thermodynamic Analysis of an Innovative Cold Energy Storage System for Auto-Cascade Refrigeration Applications
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: modified auto-cascade refrigeration, thermodynamic performance, zeotropic mixture
The cooling capacity needed by ultra-low temperature apparatus cannot be reached economically with a single vapor compression refrigeration cycle due to the constraint of the high compressor pressure ratio. The auto-cascade refrigeration cycle is a good alternative. In this work, a novel concept that applies the principle of the auto-cascade refrigeration cycle to store cold energy is conducted. The environment-friendly refrigerants of R600a/R290/R170 zeotropic mixtures are used to study the performance of the modified auto-cascade refrigeration cycle (MACRC) as an alternative for cold-energy applications. The simulation results show that a cooling capacity of 500 W can be provided below −60 °C. The mixture with a mass fraction of 0.25/0.35/0.40 yields a COP of 0.695 and an exergy efficiency of 0.262 at −66 °C. The performance of the MACRC system was investigated at an ambient temperature of 20 to 40 °C for indoor small-scale applications. It is concluded that the performance would be... [more]

Carbon Emission Scenario Prediction and Peak Path Selection in China
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon efficiency, carbon emission, carbon peak path, scenario analysis, STIRPAT model
Due to the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, the global climate is warming. As the world’s biggest emitter of carbon emissions, China faces a more severe challenge in reducing carbon emissions than developed countries. A reasonable prediction of the carbon peak in China will help the government to formulate effective emission reduction paths. This paper analyzes the changes in carbon emissions in China from 2004 to 2020, uses the STIRPAT model and scenario analysis method to predict carbon emissions from 2021 to 2030, and then calculates the carbon efficiency during carbon peaking to select the most effective carbon peak path for China. The results show that China’s carbon emissions increased year by year from 2004 to 2020. Under the baseline scenario, China is unlikely to reach its carbon peak before 2030. Under the regulatory scenarios, China can reach its carbon peak before 2030. The peak values from high to low are seen with the rapid development-weak carbon co... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: degradation, Fenton’s test, Fuel Cells, marine environment, maritime transportation, NaCl concentration, Nafion, PEMFC, temperature
The application of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) in maritime transportation is currently in the spotlight due to stringent emissions regulations and the establishment of a carbon trading system. However, salt in the marine environment can accelerate the degradation of proton-exchange membranes (PEM), which are the core component of PEMFCs. In this study, the effect of the NaCl concentration and temperature on the degradation of Nafion, the benchmark PEMFC membrane, was analyzed ex situ by accelerated degradation using Fenton’s test. The membrane properties were studied by mass change, fluoride ion emission, FTIR spectroscopy, and tensile test. The results showed that the degradation of Nafion membranes increased with the increase in temperature and NaCl concentration. Further studies revealed that Nafion produces C=O bonds during the degradation process. Additionally, it was found that sodium ions replace hydrogen ions in degraded Nafion fragments based on analysis of th... [more]

Investigation of Energy and Exergy of Geothermal Organic Rankine Cycle
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, energy production, sustainable development, thermodynamic analysis
In this study, modeling and thermodynamic analysis of the combined double flash geothermal cycle generation was conducted using zeotropic fluid as the working fluid in the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). The analysis was performed based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Hexane, cyclohexane, isohexane, R245fa, and R236ea exhibit good performance at higher temperatures. In this study, three fluids—hexane, cyclohexane, and isohexane—were used. First, the model results for the pure fluids were compared with those of previous studies. Then, the important parameters of the cycle, including the efficiency of the first law of thermodynamics, the efficiency of the second law of thermodynamics, net productive power, and the amount of exergy destruction caused by changing the mass fraction of the refrigerant for the zeotropic fluids (investigated for the whole cycle and ORC), were obtained and compared.

A Study of the Non-Linear Seepage Problem in Porous Media via the Homotopy Analysis Method
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: homotopy analysis method (HAM), low permeability, moving boundary, non-Darcy flow
A non-Darcy flow with moving boundary conditions in a low-permeability reservoir was solved using the homotopy analysis method (HAM), which was converted into a fixed-boundary mathematical model via similarity transformation. Approximate analytical solutions based on the HAM are guaranteed to be more accurate than exact analytical solutions, with relative errors between 0.0089% and 2.64%. When λ = 0, the pressure drop of the Darcy seepage model could be instantaneously transmitted to infinity. When λ > 0, the pressure drop curve of the non-Darcy seepage model exhibited the characteristics of tight support, which was clearly different from the Darcy seepage model’s formation pressure distribution curve. According to the results of the HAM, a moving boundary is more influenced by threshold pressure gradients with a longer time. When the threshold pressure gradients were smaller, the moving boundaries move more quickly and are more sensitive to external influences. One-dimensional, low-pe... [more]

Photovoltaic Module Degradation Forecast Models for Onshore and Offshore Floating Systems
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: floating photovoltaics, marine environment, offshore, PV degradation, PV degradation forecast, PV models
The degradation trend of photovoltaic modules depends on the technology, manufacturing techniques and climatic conditions of the site where they are installed. Longer useful life of the PV modules means that they will be able to produce much more energy than was used to build them; thus, extending the useful life of the modules is beneficial for the environment and increases the cost effectiveness of PVs. The problem of land use has prompted the development of agrivoltaic systems to exploit the same land both for the production of energy and for agriculture, and on water surfaces such as lakes and dams (floating PV). The exploitation of floating PV systems in onshore and offshore areas is currently under study. This constitutes an opportunity for which many factors must be taken into account; a fundamental aspect is the environmental impact, on which some recent studies have focused. Another aspect is the impact of the marine environment on PV system reliability and durability, due to... [more]

The Relationship between Energy Consumption and Economic Growth in the Baltic Countries’ Agriculture: A Non-Linear Framework
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: agricultural development, energy use, energy–environmental Kuznets curve, gross value added, NARDL model
The development of a country’s economy is directly related to the use of energy in that country’s economic sectors. Therefore, the energy−environmental Kuznets curve (EEKC) is often used when analysing a country’s potential and challenges in sustainable development, green economy, and green growth. This hypothesis tests whether there is an inverse “U”-shaped relationship between energy use and economic growth and is especially important when analysing developing countries to assess if, at a certain point, energy use begins to drop, resulting in fewer greenhouse gas emissions, environmental degradation, and the consumption of fossil-based fuels. This study aims to examine the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in the Baltic States from 1995 to 2019, with a focus on the agriculture sector. The study uses the non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model for individual and panel time series. Total energy use, as well as electricity use, is included in th... [more]

March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: ecological safety, economy, management, photovoltaic panels, recycling, sustainable development
There has been a significant increase in the use of photovoltaics over the last two decades and according to many forecasts, the next two decades are expected to be characterised by even more dynamic growth. However, the long-term durability of PV panels will primarily depend on the effectiveness of legislation and processes that will be adopted to recycle an unprecedented amount of end-of-life panels to be built in the coming decades and the ones that desperately need to be recycled (predicted amount of photovoltaic waste by 2050: 78 million tonnes). As the main part of this research, a systematic review of the literature was carried out. The aim of this was to create a conceptual framework for the analysis of the fraction separation potential in the recycling process of PV panels at the installation site from the economic and environmental safety perspective, because it is agreed that the main cost that has the greatest environmental impact in the process of recycling materials from... Airflow Fluctuation from Linear Diffusers in an Office Building: The Thermal Comfort Analysis
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: air flow distribution, indoor environment, linear diffuser, ventilation and cooling systems
In buildings, the HVAC systems are responsible for a major part of the energy consumption. Incorrect design or selection of the system and improper installation, operation, and maintenance of the systems’ elements may result in increased energy consumption. It is worth remembering that the main aim of the appropriate system is to maintain the high quality of the indoor environment. Appropriate selection of the HVAC solution ensures both thermal and quality parameters of the air, independently of the internal and external heat loads. The microclimate of a room is affected not only by air temperature, humidity, and purity, but also by air velocity in the occupied zone. The proper air velocity distribution prevents discomfort, particularly at workstations. Based on the measurements in the office building, an analysis of velocity profiles of air supplying two different types of linear diffusers was carried out. Keywords: building interfaces, ecological valency, indoor environment
This paper presents an occupant-centric theory of buildings’ indoor-environmental control systems and their user interfaces. Buildings typically can have multiple devices and systems to maintain indoor-environmental conditions within certain ranges in order to meet occupants’ health and comfort requirements. Therefore, it is important to understand what those ranges are exactly, who defines them, and for whom. Health and comfort sciences offer some broad directions concerning desirable indoor conditions. These are typically formulated in various codes, standards, and guidelines in terms of target values or the set points of control variables. However, preferable conditions may differ at different times and for different individuals. Another question concerns the agency responsible for maintaining the preferred conditions. In some settings, conditions may be centrally controlled via the buildings’ automation systems, whereas in other settings, occupants might have the possibility to con... [more]
