Assessing Hydrokinetic Energy in the Mexican Caribbean: A Case Study in the Cozumel Channel

This paper presents a techno-economic assessment of hydrokinetic energy of Cozumel Island, where ocean currents have been detected, but tourist activities are paramount. The main objective of this research is to identify devices that have been used to harvest hydrokinetic power elsewhere and perform an economic analysis as to their implementation in the Mexican Caribbean. First, the energy potential of the area was evaluated using simulated data available through the HYCOM consortium. Then, for four pre-commercial and commercial turbines, technical and economic analyses of their deployments were performed. Socio-environmental constraints were reviewed and discussed. Design, Greenhouse Emissions, and Environmental Payback of a Photovoltaic Solar Energy System

This study aims to design a 16.4 MW photovoltaic solar system located in the Brazilian Northeast and quantify the associated greenhouse gas emissions and environmental payback. The energy system was designed to minimize the Levelized Cost of Energy. The greenhouse gas emissions were quantified with the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, expressing the environmental impact in terms of generated energy (kg CO2-eq/kWh) and following ISO 14040 and 14044. The environmental payback considered the Brazilian electricity mix and degradation of the panels. The results indicated a system capable of producing 521,443 MWh in 25 years, with an emission factor of 0.044 kg CO2-eq/kWh and environmental payback of five years and eight months. The emission factor is at least ten times lower than thermoelectric natural gas power plants. Evaluating China’s Role in Achieving the 1.5 °C Target of the Paris Agreement

Now that many countries have set goals for reaching net zero emissions by the middle of the century, it is important to clarify the role of each country in achieving the 1.5 °C target of the Paris Agreement. Here, we evaluated China’s role by calculating the global temperature impacts caused by China’s emission pathways available in global emissions scenarios toward the 1.5 °C target. Our results show that China’s contribution to global warming in 2050 (since 2005) is 0.17 °C on average, with a range of 0.1 °C to 0.22 °C. The peak contributions of China vary from 0.1 °C to 0.23 °C, with the years reached distributing between 2036 and 2065. The large difference in peak temperatures arises from the differences in emission pathways of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Due to the global warming and resulting problems, attention has been paid to greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere since the 1980s and 1990s. For this reason, the Montreal Protocol and the Kyoto Protocol have tightened regulations on the use of gaseous refrigerants in both HVAC systems and industrial refrigeration. Gradually, new generations of gaseous refrigerants, that theoretically have much less negative environmental impact than their predecessors, are introduced into the market. The key parameter describing environmental impact is the GWP index, which is most often defined on a time horizon of 100 years. Submarine permafrost is widely distributed in polar ocean, which has an important impact on polar engineering and subsea energy exploitation. According to the frozen porous medium theory, an analytical solution of the one-dimensional vertically dynamic response of the submarine permafrost is derived by using the Laplace transform and the separation variable method. Using the general forms of partial differential equations and the pressure acoustics module in COMSOL software, a finite element model of submarine permafrost overlying a seawater layer is established. The results show that the degraded solution agrees well with the existing results of the vertically dynamic response of the saturated soil layer in the seabed, and the analytical and numerical solutions are in good agreement. Analysis of the Spectral Sensitivity of Luxmeters and Light Sensors of Smartphones in Terms of Their Influence on the Results of Illuminance Measurements—Example Cases

The article presents spectral sensitivity curves of 22 typical luxmeters and 3 smartphones as a result of laboratory measurements. Based on the measurement data, errors in the spectral correction of the considered instruments and devices were calculated. Due to the fact that the value of the measured illuminance is influenced by the spectral characteristics of the radiation, in order to determine the spectral corrections coefficients, 10 light sources with different spectral distributions of radiation were taken into account. Spectral corrections factors were determined using two methods for all luxmeters and smartphones. This paper presents the relationship between the shape of the spectral sensitivity curves of a given luxmeter and the measured values of f′1 errors. Moreover, the limitations related to the use of spectral corrections in environmental measurements with the use of a luxmeter were demonstrated.

Influence of Local Gas Sources with Variable Density and Momentum on the Flow of the Medium in the Conduit

In this article, the analysis of mechanical energy changes in a gas medium flow with stable and variable density was presented. To determine the energy losses, the various sources of momentum and mass were used, which had an influence on air flow through the conduit in the system without heat exchange with the environment. The occurrence of varying density gas flow in the conduit (caused by local inflow of mass and momentum) in inclined pipes generates a natural depression−internal mechanical energy. The local momentum sources can facilitate or hinder the gas flow through the conduit. Low-temperature solar thermal energy is a viable and mature alternative to reduce the use of fossil fuels for domestic hot water heating. The impact of the inclusion of this technology in the energy matrix in the Andean city of Cuenca, Ecuador, is analyzed. In Ecuador, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is currently used to heat water due to the high state subsidy, with a cost of 0, 11 USD for an LPG kg compared to the international price of 1.18 USD a Kg of LPG in 2021. Sustainability indicators show that the urban energy matrix would be minimally affected by a high penetration of solar thermal systems. Miscible viscous fingering occurs when a less viscous fluid displaces a more viscous one in porous media or a Hele−Shaw cell.
