Guixiong He, Kaicheng Liu, Songcen Wang, Yang Lei, Jiaxi Li
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CWM-CGAN, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, scenario generation, weather label
With the increasing installed capacity of renewable energy in the energy system, the uncertainty of renewable energy has an increasingly prominent impact on power system planning and operation. Renewable energy such as wind and solar energy is greatly affected by the external weather. How to use a reasonable method to describe the relationship between weather and renewable energy output, so as to measure the uncertainty of renewable energy more accurately, is an important problem. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a renewable energy scenario generation method based on a conditional generation countermeasure network and combination weighting method (CWM-CGAN). In this method, the combination of AHP and the entropy weight method is used to analyze the meteorological factors, the weather classification is defined as the condition label in the conditional generation countermeasure network, and the energy scenario is generated by the conditional generation confrontation network. Mai Hassan Roushdy
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biodiesel, electric arc furnace slag, Optimization, response surface methodology
Biodiesel is one of the most environmentally friendly and renewable fuels, as it is a non-polluting fuel and is made from living resources, such as vegetable oils. The steel industry generates a variety of solid wastes, including electric arc furnace slag (EAFS). The synthesis of biodiesel from waste sunflower cooking oil was examined in this study, utilizing EAFS as a catalyst, which mainly contains ferric and ferrous oxides, calcium oxide, and silica. To evaluate their impact on biodiesel production, four independent variables were chosen: temperature (50−70 °C), catalyst loading (1−5%), methanol-to-oil (M:O) molar ratio (5−20), and time (1−4 h). The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to examine the impact of independent variables on reaction response, which is the biodiesel yield. This process was carried out using a design expert program by central composite design (CCD). A model was constructed, and showed that the biodiesel yield was directly proportional to all independ... Ştefan Predoi, Ştefan Grigorean, Gheorghe Dumitraşcu
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion system preliminary design, hybrid rocket, initial and time-dependent parameters, regression rate
The paper presents a useful engineering model for the design of preliminary hybrid rocket engines. This model involves the experimentally obtained equation regarding the speed of the burning interface between solid fuel and gaseous phase, called the regression rate. This regression rate characterizes the mass rate of the burning fuel and additionally the mass rate of the oxidizer through the imposed ratio of these mass rates during combustion. The preliminary design is applied to combustion using pure HTPB and gaseous oxygen and was developed for three cases, constant regression rate, constant oxygen mass flow rate and constant O/F (ratio of mass rates of oxygen and of fuel). The design evaluates the initial fuel port geometry, the initial mass of fuel and oxygen, the combustion time, the thrust at sea level, and the time-dependent functions of regression rate, of fuel and oxygen mass rates, and of thrust. It was assumed that the regression rate formula applies at any time of combustio... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct drive wind turbine, grid fault, nonlinear oscillation, time-frequency analysis, transient stability, transient switch
Transient stability during grid fault is experienced differently in modern power systems, especially in wind-turbine-dominated power systems. In this paper, transient behavior and stability issues of a direct drive wind turbine during fault recovery in DC-link voltage control timescale are studied. First, the motion equation model that depicts the phase and amplitude dynamics of internal voltage driven by unbalanced active and reactive power is developed to physically depict transient characteristics of the direct drive wind turbine itself. Considering transient switch control induced by active power climbing, the two-stage model is employed. Based on the motion equation model, transient behavior during fault recovery in a single machine infinite bus system is studied, and the analysis is also divided into two stages: during and after active power climbing. During active power climbing, a novel approximate analytical expression is proposed to clearly reveal the frequency dynamics of th... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element method, fracture intersection, fracture network, hydraulic fracturing
The intersection behavior of hydraulic fractures and single natural fractures has been studied in detail; however, in fractured reservoirs, natural fractures are numerous and interlaced and the intersection of hydraulic fractures and multiple natural fractures occurs during the fracturing process. This intersection behavior is more complex and there is a lack of research on this topic at present. In this study, a numerical simulation model of the interaction between hydraulic fractures and a series of natural fractures was established, the main factors that affect the formation scale of a fracture network during the hydraulic fracturing of a fractured reservoir were studied using the numerical simulation method, and the parameters were also studied. The results showed that the natural fracture trend, in situ stress difference, and injection flow rate have an impact on the scale of a fracture network. The larger the in situ stress difference, the smaller the scale of the fracture networ... [more]

Keywords: balancing power, chemical industry, demand response, economic analysis, epichlorohydrin process, optimisation
The increasing share of variable renewable energies in the power grid is an incentive to explore demand response strategies. Chlor-alkali processes are high potential candidates, according to previous publications. Within Germany’s chemical industry, chlorine production accounts for approximately 20% of electricity use and could play a significant role in power grid stabilisation on the consumer end. This study focuses on the feasibility of load flexibilisation in epichlorohydrin plants, with the second biggest estimated demand response potential for chlorine-based products in Germany. A plant model with allyl chloride storage was created based on real data and literature values. Results from this model, spot market and balancing power prices, and future electricity market scenarios were used in a mixed-integer linear optimisation. We find that benefits from demand response can be generated as soon as additional power and storage volume is provided. The composition of provided types of... [more]

Keywords: microbial desalination cells, renewable energies, reverse osmosis, seawater desalination, solar desalination, Wave Energy, wind driven desalination
New trends and future prospects for small capacity systems of Renewable Energy-driven DESalination (REDES) are reviewed and assessed in this paper over a nominal desalination capacity range of 3−1000 m3/d. A thorough literature review is reported in order to evaluate current research and developing activities. Outstanding commercial prospects in the near future are identified for two off-grid REDES technologies under development. First, wave energy converters with direct coupling to seawater desalination. Second, solar micro gas turbines with biofuel backup coupled to reverse osmosis (RO) desalination and/or zero liquid discharge water treatment. These systems, as well as mature REDES plants (namely PV/RO and wind turbines/RO), will benefit from forthcoming advances in energy efficiency in the RO process itself. The Closed Circuit RO desalination (CCROTM) concept may be a key configuration for enhancing RE-driven RO desalination. Additionally, opportunities for innovation in seawater R... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diverting fracturing, fracture propagation, hydraulic fracturing, stress difference, temporary plugging
Temporary plugging and diverting fracturing (TPDF) is widely used to improve the stimulation effectiveness in coal seam. To study the fracture propagation behavior during TPDF in coal formation, a series of laboratory hydraulic fracturing experiments were performed on natural coal samples. Based on the results of sample splitting and fracture reconstruction, the influences of horizontal stress difference and the size of temporary plugging agent (TPA) as well as the concentration of TPA on hydraulic fracture growth were analyzed. Experimental results show that TPDF is beneficial for improving the fracture complexity even under high stress difference of 8 MPa. When the TPA of small particle size (70/100 mesh) was applied, the primary fracture could not be fully blocked whereas increasing the particle size of TPA to 20/40 mesh tended to cause accumulation and bridging in the wellbore, resulting in an abnormally high fracturing pressure. TPA with particle size of 40/70 mesh tended to be a... [more]

Ireneusz Zbicinski, Krzysztof Ciesielski, Bangguo Ge
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agglomeration, multiple nozzles, single nozzle location, spray drying
This paper reviews experimental works on the effects of single nozzle location and multi-nozzle atomization on the mechanism of particle agglomeration in spray drying. In addition to the naturally occurring primary agglomeration, forced and secondary agglomeration is observed as an effect of different nozzle positions or multiple-nozzle atomization in spray drying. Particle size diameters in the spray drying process for atomization from a single nozzle located at the top of the tower are larger than at the bottom of the tower because of the lower ambient air temperatures and longer residence time in the agglomeration zone. The trend of reduction in particle size is observed in all analyzed works when the nozzle is moved down towards the air inlet, due to droplets’ exposure to higher air temperatures and shorter residence time in the drying chamber. Conditions of droplet−droplet, dry−dry or sticky−dry collisions leading to the development of coalescence, agglomeration and rebound zones... [more]

Keywords: combustion phasing prediction, ignition-spark engine, machine learning method, support vector regression
While traditional one-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical simulation techniques require a lot of tests and time, emerging Machine Learning (ML) methods can use fewer data to obtain more information to assist in engine development. Combustion phasing is an important parameter of the spark-ignition (SI) engine, which determines the emission and power performance of the engine. In the engine calibration process, it is necessary to determine the maximum brake torque timing (MBT) for different operating conditions to obtain the best engine dynamics performance. Additionally, the determination of the combustion phasing enables the Wiebe function to predict the combustion process. Existing studies have unacceptable errors in the prediction of combustion phasing parameters. This study aimed to find a solution to reduce prediction errors, which will help to improve the calibration accuracy of the engine. In this paper, we used Support Vector Regression (SVR) to reconstruct the mapping r... [more]

Keywords: apparent activation energy, oxygen concentration, sodium oxygen reaction, sodium pool fire, thermogravimetric analysis
As the main reactor type of the fourth-generation nuclear power systems, sodium-cooled fast reactors are now designed and built worldwide. A sodium pool cooling circulation process is indispensable in a sodium-cooled fast reactor. However, the sodium pool fire design is the basis of accidents in sodium-cooled fast reactors. The fire hazard caused by the sodium−oxygen reaction and fast reactor safety have attracted extensive attention. Dry powder is widely used as an effective fire-extinguishing agent to control sodium fire. The sodium will burn in an oxygen-depleted atmosphere when using dry powder to cover fire. In this study, the change law of thermogravimetry of melted sodium is studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the apparent activation energy (Ea) is obtained, which has a linear relationship with the oxygen concentration. The results can provide a reference for improving the engineering design standards of sodium fire suppression systems and can also be incorporated in... [more]

Keywords: alkali-activated slag, electric arc furnace ladle slag, high temperature performance
In this study, the engineering properties of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and alkali-activated slag (AAS) mortar with electric arc furnace ladle slag (EAFLS) were investigated to reveal the effects of EAFLS on the expansion of cementitious mortars. Additionally, the effects of these two types of mortar were explored based on their compressive strength, especially at high temperatures. EAFLS in OPC mortars significantly reduced the compressive strength and caused serious soundness problems in the mortars after autoclaving due to the presence of free-CaO and free-MgO in the EAFLS slag. On the other hand, the AAS mortars produced with EAFLS had compressive strength comparable to ordinary OPC mortars and maintained soundness after autoclaving. During a 550 °C heat treatment, the OPC mortar cracked and lost residual strength, but the AAS mortar retained more than 90% of its residual strength. Even after an 800 °C heat treatment, the AAS mortar maintained 14% of its residual strength (abou... [more]

Keywords: discrete element method, high energy ball mill, stressing model, sulfide solid electrolyte
The synthesis of sulfide solid electrolytes in ball mills by mechanochemical routes not only is efficient but also can enable the upscaling of material synthesis as required for the commercialization of solid-state battery materials. On a laboratory scale, the Emax high energy ball mill accounts for high stresses and power densities, as well as for temperature control, to prevent damage to the material and equipment even for long process times. To overcome the merely phenomenological treatment, we characterized the milling process in an Emax by DEM simulations, using the sulfide solid electrolyte LPS as a model material for the calibration of input parameters to the DEM, and compared it to a planetary ball mill for a selected parameter set. We derived mechanistic model equations for the stressing conditions depending on the operation parameters of rotational speed, media size and filling ratio. The stressing conditions are of importance as they determine the outcome of the mechanochemi... [more]

Keywords: anode catalysts, layered double hydroxide, oxygen evolution reaction, perovskites, seawater electrolysis
The progress of high-efficiency non-precious metal anode catalysts for direct seawater splitting is of great importance. However, due to the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics, competition of chlorine evolution reaction (ClER), and corrosion of chloride ions on the anode, the direct seawater splitting faces many challenges. Herein, we develop a perovskite@NiFe layered double hydroxide composite for anode catalyst based on Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 (BSCF) and NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) heterostructure. The optimized BSCF@CeO2@NiFe exhibits excellent OER activity, with the potential at 100 mA cm−2 (Ej = 100) being 1.62 V in the alkaline natural seawater. Moreover, the electrolytic cell composed of BSCF@CeO2@NiFe anode shows an excellent stability, with negligible attenuation during the long-term overall seawater splitting with the remarkable self-recovery ability in the initial operation stage, and the direct seawater splitting potential increasing by about 30 mV at... Keywords: cost of electricity, HOMER, hybrid renewable, optimal configuration, semi-urban electrification, Somalia
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of a wind−solar hybrid system on and off-grid power system for electricity generation at a selected location in Somalia using the renewable energy optimization software HOMER. The simulation model was successfully applied to find the best simulation results based on the energy-efficient system for the specific load. The technical and economic performance of an on-grid and stand-alone combination of 25 kW wind power and 60 kW solar photovoltaic was investigated. Since the city of Cadaado has not yet installed its own standard modern electricity grid and due to the great need to reduce energy costs in Somalia, a feasibility study was conducted on how to supply electricity to a sampled residential consumption. Based on the basic characteristics of renewable energy sources in central Somalia, the on-grid wind and solar photovoltaic systems could be economically feasible.

Keywords: cellulosic ethanol, corn germ meal, oil recovery, oil-bearing energy crops
Efforts to engineer high-productivity crops to accumulate oils in their vegetative tissue present the possibility of expanding biodiesel production. However, processing the new crops for lipid recovery and ethanol production from cell wall saccharides is challenging and expensive. In a previous study using corn germ meal as a model substrate, we reported that liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment enriched the lipid concentration by 2.2 to 4.2 fold. This study investigated combining oil recovery with ethanol production by extracting oil following LHW and simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) of the biomass. Corn germ meal was again used to model the oil-bearing energy crops. Pretreated germ meal hydrolysate or solids (160 and 180 °C for 10 min) were fermented, and lipids were extracted from both the spent fermentation whole broth and fermentation solids, which were recovered by centrifugation and convective drying. Lipid contents in spent fermentation solids increased 3... [more]

This article presents the results of research on the possibilities of fragmentation of cultural, and especially agricultural, landscapes in a selected locality in eastern Slovakia, which is currently characterized by a high proportion of large-scale soil units used for growing cereals and crops subsequently used as energy sources (maize and oilseed rape, among others). Slovakia, as the country with the largest average field area in the European Union (EU), is facing a process of fragmentation of these units to counter climate change and increase the resilience of the landscape to erosion, soil fertility, and biodiversity loss. This paper presents a fragmentation method based on the restoration of former dividing lines, mainly formed by dirt roads, based on the historical mapping. The results show that in this way it is possible to achieve denser landscape fragmentation, to create dividing green belts, to increase the resilience of the environment to water and wind erosion, and to creat... Keywords: battery performance, deep eutectic solvent (DES), hydrogen bond, redox flow battery, ternary solvent
Redox flow batteries hold promise as large-scale energy storage systems for off-grid electrification. The electrolyte is one of the key components of redox batteries. Inspired by the mechanism involved in solvents for extraction, a ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) is demonstrated, in which glycerol is introduced into the original binary ethaline DES. Redox pairs (active substance) dissolved in the solvent have low charge transfer resistance. The results show that the viscosity of the solvent with the ratio of choline chloride to ethylene glycol to glycerol of 1:2:0.5 decreases from 51.2 mPa·s to 40.3 mPa·s after adding the redox pair, implying that the mass transfer resistance of redox pairs in this solvent is reduced. Subsequent cyclic voltammetry and impedance tests show that the electrochemical performance with the ternary DES as the electrolyte in redox flow batteries is improved. When the ratio of 1:2:0.5 ternary DES is used as the electrolyte, the power density of the battery... [more]
