Keywords: deflagration-to-detonation transition, engine start-up, ethylene-oxygen mixture, minimum layer height, rotating detonation engine
The conditions for the mild initiation of the detonation of homogeneous stoichiometric ethylene-oxygen mixtures diluted with nitrogen up to ~40%vol. in a planar semi-confined slit-type combustor with a slit 5.0 ± 0.4 mm wide, simulating the annular combustor of a Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE), are determined experimentally using self-luminous high-speed video recording and pressure measurements. To ensure the mild detonation initiation, the fuel mixture in the RDE combustor must be ignited upon reaching a certain limiting (minimal) fill with the mixture and the arising flame must be transformed to a detonation via deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT). Thus, for mild detonation initiation in a C2H4 + 3O2 mixture filling the slit, the height of the mixture layer must exceed the slit width by approximately 10 times (~50 mm), and for the C2H4 + 3(O2 + 2/5 N2) mixture, by approximately 60 times. The limiting height of the mixture layer required for DDT exhibits a sharp increase at... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design, direct drive, magnetic saturation, MW scale, PM vernier, power factor, specific electric loading, torque per volume, wind generator
This paper presents the design and an analysis of a surface PM vernier generator (SPMVG) for MW-scale direct-drive (DD) wind turbine application. An SPMVG has the advantage of higher torque density; however, especially at higher power ratings with increased electrical loadings, the power factor worsens and there are some serious concerns including magnetic saturation of cores and PM demagnetization. These issues are directly related to machine design parameters such as PM dimensions, applied electrical loading, slot geometry and the choice of slot−pole combination. It is determined that depending on the PM thickness and a few other design variables, each slot−pole combination has an optimal value of specific electrical loading. The use of the optimal value of specific electrical loading ensures that the machine is not saturated, the performance is optimum and the power factor is not unnecessarily degraded. Moreover, under certain design constraints, design criteria are developed that e... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrogen evolution reaction, LDH, sulfides, urea electrolysis, urea oxidation reaction
Urea electrolysis is regarded as a prospective method for energy-saving hydrogen production. However, the practical application of this technology is limited by the lack of high-performance bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). Herein, a heterostructure catalyst composed of NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) and sulfides (NiFe LDH-NiFeSx/NF) catalysts is prepared via a simple one-step hydrothermal approach. Remarkably, the prepared NiFe LDH-NiFeSx/NF required 138 mV and 1.34 V to achieve 10 mA cm−2 for HER and UOR in 1 M KOH and 0.33 M urea, respectively. Furthermore, when NiFe LDH-NiFeSx/NF is used as a cathode for urea electrolysis, only 1.44 V is required at 10 mA cm−2, which is much lower than the 1.53 V needed for overall water splitting.

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: closely spaced arrangement, pair of turbines, power coefficient, rotational speed, trio of turbines, vertical-axis wind turbine, wind-direction dependence, wind-tunnel experiment
To elucidate the wind-direction dependence of the rotor performance in closely spaced vertical-axis wind turbines, wind-tunnel experiments were performed at a uniform wind velocity. In the experiments, a pair/trio of three-dimensional printed model turbines with a diameter of D = 50 mm was used. The experiments were performed systematically by applying incremental adjustments to the rotor gap g and rotational direction of each rotor and by changing the wind direction. For tandem layouts, the rotational speed of the downwind rotor is 75−80% that of an isolated rotor, even at g/D = 10. For the average rotational speed of the rotor pair, an origin-symmetrical and a line-symmetrical distribution are observed in the co-rotating and inverse-rotating configurations, respectively, thereby demonstrating the wind-direction dependence for the rotor pair. The inverse-rotating trio configuration yields a higher average rotational speed than the co-rotating trio configuration for any rotor spacing u... [more]

Keywords: affordable and clean energy, battery monitoring system, electric vehicles, gradient vector, responsible consumption and production, support vector machine
The battery monitoring system (BMoS) is crucial to monitor the condition of the battery in supplying and absorbing the energy when operating and simultaneously determine the optimal limits for achieving long battery life. All of this can be done by measuring the battery parameters and increasing the state of charge (SoC) and the state of health (SoH) of the battery. The battery dataset from NASA is used for evaluation. In this work, the gradient vector is employed to obtain the trend of the energy supply pattern from the battery. In addition, a support vector machine (SVM) is adopted for an accurate battery accuracy index. This is in line with the use of polynomial regression; hence, points V1 and V2 are obtained as the boundaries of the normal-usage phase. Furthermore, testing of the time length distribution is also carried out on the length of time the battery was successfully extracted from the classification. All these stages can be used to calculate the rate of battery degradation... [more]

Keywords: early battery failure detection, lithium-ion battery, wavelet spectral analysis
The early fault detection and reliable operation of lithium-ion batteries are two of the main challenges the technology faces. Here, we report a new methodology for early failure detection in lithium-ion batteries. This new methodology is based on wavelet spectral analysis to detect overcharge failure in batteries that is performed for voltage data obtained in cycling tests, subjected to a standard charge/discharge protocol. The main frequencies of the voltage temporal signal, the harmonic components in the regular cycling test, and a low frequency pattern were identified. For the first time, battery failure can be anticipated by wavelet spectral analysis. These results could be the key to the new early detection of battery failures in order to reduce out-of-control explosions and fire risks.

Keywords: co-cooling, cooling tower, downdraft system, efficiency, photovoltaic, PV cooling
Overheating of photovoltaic (PV) panels decreases their efficiency and lifetime, and subsequently increases the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Passive PV cooling would enhance the PV operational stability and durability. The cooling tower (CT) technology offers an attractive approach for zero-cost capability. In this work, we developed and customized a CT specific for passive PV cooling. Since the dense downdrafted cooled air gained high velocity, a turbine was installed at the bottom of the CT for power production. At the height’s ambient temperature, the CT cooled the air from 50 °C down to 30 °C. The cooled air at 30 °C has enough capacity to cool the PV panels. This cooling capacity improved the average annual efficiency of the PV panels by 6.83%. The design specifications of the CT have the highest performance, with the maximum radius of PV area of panels that can be cooled at 50 m. Furthermore, the current design could operate during the night for power production with minimum... [more]

Keywords: FE model, Li-ion batteries, module, penetration, safety
The damage behavior of Li-ion vehicle battery modules with prismatic cells has been investigated through mechanical experiments and numerical simulations. The modules were subjected to quasi-static indentation using a V-shaped stainless-steel wedge along three orthogonal directions. One higher speed test was also performed. Force and voltage were measured as a function of displacement to monitor damage during loading. A detailed finite element (FE) model was developed to simulate force-displacement with very good comparison to experimental results. Based on the FE model, energy absorption contributions of four major component groups were analyzed along with detailed effects of enclosure weld defects. Analysis indicates the steel parts absorbed significant amounts of energy irrespective of indentation direction. The welds connecting the side plates were the weak link in the protective structure. Increasing the thickness of the steel plates could help absorb more energy.

Keywords: random forests, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar forecasting, time-series forecasting
Effective operation of a microgrid depends critically on accurate forecasting of its components. Recently, internet forecasting competitions have been used to determine the best methods for energy forecasting, with some competitions having a special focus on microgrids and COVID-19 energy-use forecasting. This paper describes forecasting for the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society 3rd Technical Challenge, which required predicting solar and building loads of a microgrid system at Monash University for the month of November 2020. The forecast achieved the lowest error rate in the competition. We review the literature on recent energy forecasting competitions and metrics and explain how the solution drew from top-ranked solutions in previous energy forecasting competitions such as the Global Energy Forecasting Competition series. The techniques can be reapplied in other forecasting endeavours, while approaches to some of the time-series forecasting are more ad hoc and specific to the... [more]

Keywords: aging mechanism, battery aging, EDS analysis, post-mortem, real-life cycling, SEM analysis
Lithium-ion batteries are currently the pioneers of green transition in the transportation sector. The nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) technology, in particular, has the largest market share in electric vehicles (EVs), offering high specific energy, optimized power performance, and lifetime. The aging of different lithium-ion battery technologies has been a major research topic in the last decade, either to study the degradation behavior, identify the associated aging mechanisms, or to develop health prediction models. However, the lab-scale standard test protocols are mostly utilized for aging characterization, which was deemed not useful since batteries are supposed to age dynamically in real life, leading to aging heterogeneity. In this research, a commercial NMC variation (4-4-2) was aged with a pragmatic standard-drive profile to study aging behavior. The characterized measurable parameters were statistically investigated before performing an autopsy on the aged battery. Harvested s... [more]

Keywords: climate change, CO2 emissions, electricity production sources, energy consumption, G7
The threat of global warming has increased due to industrialization, urbanization, population expansion, and changes in lifestyle among the Group of Seven(G7) Carbon dioxide emissions (CO2) directly affect how much electricity can be generated from various sources. This research aims to identify environmental hazards associated with various energy sources. Analyzing the impact of various energy sources on CO2 emissions from electricity and heat production using data from the G7. The data is analyzed using quantile regression (QR), generalized method of moments (GMM), random effects (RE), and fixed effects (FE). Our results indicate a substantial positive impact on CO2 emissions regardless of the technology used to generate coal and gas power. Coal-fired power plants have a larger impact on the environment than other sources of emissions. Also, all coal and gas coefficients are significant in FE, RE, GMM, and QR. Oil coefficients have a negative impact on environmental degradation and a... [more]

Keywords: boiler turbine unit, coordinated control, iterative learning control, optimization of energy efficiency, throttle pressure control
For the boiler-turbine unit in power systems, a coordinated control structure plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance in supply and demand of energy, reducing pollutant emissions and optimizing energy efficiency. The matching requirements of the turbine and boiler, the wide range of load changes, and the cooperative operation of many devices in the power system pose many challenges to designing a coordinated control system for the boiler turbine system, thus making the control design a difficult task. In this paper, iterative learning control (ILC) is used to maintain the throttle pressure and megawatt output power of a boiler turbine at the desired set points by controlling the hybrid pattern design structure. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can maintain the desired set points, and the desired response can also be obtained faster by using the proposed approach compared to the ones available in the literature.

Keywords: dynamic stiffening, modal analysis, spin softening, wind turbine blades
With the large-scale development of wind turbines, large flexible blades bear heavier loads. In the actual rotating work of blades, the coupling of structural deformation and motion produces a dynamic stiffening effect and spin softening effect, which affects the dynamic characteristics of blades. In this study, the finite element method is used to model the NREL 5MW blade, and the dynamic stiffening and spin softening effects are investigated using the modal analysis. The influence of rotating effects on the blade’s natural frequency is revealed. It is concluded that the effect of dynamic stiffening is more significant than that of spin softening, and the comprehensive result of the two effects is not simply the superposition of them but presents obvious nonlinearity.

The efficiency of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) may be substantially increased if the energy of the exhaust gases, which do not complete the expansion inside the cylinder of the internal combustion engine, is efficiently recovered by means of a properly designed turbogenerator and employed for vehicle propulsion; previous studies, carried out by the same authors of this work, showed a potential hybrid vehicle fuel efficiency increment up to 15% by employing a 20 kW turbine on a 100 HP rated power thermal unit. The innovative thermal unit here proposed is composed of a supercharged engine endowed with a properly designed turbogenerator, which comprises two fundamental elements: an exhaust gas turbine expressly designed and optimized for the application, and a suitable electric generator necessary to convert the recovered energy into electric energy, which can be stored in the on-board energy storage system of the vehicle. In these two parts, the realistic efficiency of the innovative... [more]

Keywords: coupled heat transfer, pyrolysis, regenerative cooling, scramjet
The feasibility of regenerative cooling technology in scramjet engines has been verified, while the heat transfer behavior involved in the process needs further study. This paper expounds on the necessity of coupled heat-transfer analysis and summarizes its research progress. The results show that the effect of pyrolysis on heat transfer in the cooling channel depends on the heat flux and coking rate, and the coupling relationship between combustion and heat transfer is closely related to the fuel flow rate. Therefore, we confirm that regulating the cooling channel layout according to the real heat-flux distribution, suppressing coking, and accurately controlling the fuel flow rate can contribute to accomplishing the optimal collaborative design of cooling performance and combustion performance. Finally, a conjugate thermal analysis model can be used to evaluate the performance of various thermal protection systems.

Keywords: catalyst, cracking, municipal solid waste, pyrolysis, residence time
One of the technical limitations of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) pyrolysis is the high content of tar in its gas products. In order to resolve this problem, a two-stage RDF pyrolysis with a catalyst based on char from RDF pyrolysis is proposed. This paper presents the results of municipal waste pyrolysis beginning in an oven heated to 480 °C and ending with catalytic tar cracking carried out in the temperature range from 800 to 1000 °C. Thermal and catalytic pyrolysis with a char catalyst containing a minimum of 6% Fe resulted in increases in the CO and H2 contents in gas products and decreases in CO2 and CH4. At 1000 °C, the mass ratio of gaseous products to liquids was greater than 6. The residence time of the gases in the catalytic zone was about 3−5 s. The reactor was a good source of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

Keywords: dimensionless analytical solution, local and total exergy destruction, recuperators
Dimensionless expressions of exergy destruction, normalized to ambient temperature and heat capacity of the weaker stream, for all basic types of recuperators are derived. The analytical expressions for maximum exergy destruction were calculated using the GNU Octave software for all recuperators, namely parallel-flow and counter-flow recuperators, and all forms of cross-flow heat exchangers, namely without mixing of streams, only mixing the streamlines of the weaker stream, only mixing the streamlines of the stronger stream and mixing the weaker and stronger streams. For parallel-flow and counter-flow recuperators, as well as for their special cases, expressions for local and total exergy destruction are given. It is shown that the maximum exergy destruction, as a local extreme, is the same for all recuperators for mutually equal values of the quantities π3 (ratio of the heat capacity of the weaker stream to the heat capacity of the stronger stream) and πT (ratio of the inlet temperatu... Keywords: biomass conversion, glucose, H2SO4, levulinic acid, Na-BEA, zeolites
This article presents the results of the conversion of biomass-based glucose to levulinic acid (LA) with the use of Na-BEA commercial zeolite catalyst. For this purpose, synthetic zeolite BEA was used as a matrix. The glucose conversion process with the participation of Na-BEA zeolite allowed the following acids to be obtained: levulinic acid, lactic acid, pyruvic acid and formic acid. The highest yield of levulinic acid was achieved when processed for 1−5 h at 200−250 °C with 0.1 g and 0.6 g of Na-BEA catalyst. We also compare the one-pot heterogeneous process with similar homogeneous process using H2SO4 as catalyst.

Keywords: burner, exhaust gas self-recirculation, Hydrogen, NOx
Hydrogen is expected to be a next-generation energy source that does not emit carbon dioxide, but when used as a fuel, the issue is the increase in the amount of NOx that is caused by the increase in flame temperature. In this study, we experimentally investigated NOx emissions rate when hydrogen was burned in a hydrocarbon gas burner, which is used in a wide temperature range. As a result of the experiments, the amount of NOx when burning hydrogen in a nozzle mixed burner was twice as high as when burning city gas. However, by increasing the flow velocity of the combustion air, the amount of NOx could be reduced. In addition, by reducing the number of combustion air nozzles rather than decreasing the diameter of the air nozzles, a larger recirculation flow could be formed into the furnace, and the amount of NOx could be reduced by up to 51%. Furthermore, the amount of exhaust gas recirculation was estimated from the reduction rate of NOx, and the validity was confirmed by the relation... [more]
