Thermal Behavior of Ceramic Bodies Based on Estonian Clay from the Arumetsa Deposit with Oil Shale Ash and Clinker Dust Additives
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ceramics, clay, clinker dust, FTIR, kinetics, oil shale ash, TG-DTA-MS, TMA
The thermal behavior of green clay samples from the Arumetsa and Füzérradvány deposits (Hungary) and the influence of two new types of Estonian oil shale (OS) ashes and cement bypass dust (clinker dust) additives on it were the objectives of this study. Thermal and thermo-dilatometric analysis methods were applied using a Setaram Setsys 1750 thermoanalyzer coupled with a Pfeiffer Omnistar spectrometer and a Setaram Setsys 1750 CS Evolution dilatometer. The kinetic parameters were calculated based on the differential isoconversional method of Friedman. The results of the thermal analysis of clays and blends indicated the emission of physically bound water at 200−250 °C. At temperatures from 200−250 °C to 550−600 °C the release of water is caused by oxidation of organic matter and dehydroxylation of different clay minerals like illite, illite-smectite, mica and kaolin. From blends, in addition, also from the decomposition of portlandite. The emission of CO2 at these temperatures was a re... [more]

A Sustainable Process to Produce Manganese and Its Alloys through Hydrogen and Aluminothermic Reduction
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aluminothermic, CO2 emission, energy consumption, ferromanganese, Hydrogen, manganese, reduction, sustainable
Hydrogen and aluminum were used to produce manganese, aluminum−manganese (AlMn) and ferromanganese (FeMn) alloys through experimental work, and mass and energy balances. Oxide pellets were made from Mn oxide and CaO powder, followed by pre-reduction by hydrogen. The reduced MnO pellets were then smelted and reduced at elevated temperatures through CaO flux and Al reductant addition, yielding metallic Mn. Changing the amount of the added Al for the aluminothermic reduction, with or without iron addition led to the production of Mn metal, AlMn alloy and FeMn alloy. Mass and energy balances were carried out for three scenarios to produce these metal products with feasible material flows. An integrated process with three main steps is introduced; a pre-reduction unit to pre-reduce Mn ore, a smelting-aluminothermic reduction unit to produce metals from the pre-reduced ore, and a gas treatment unit to do heat recovery and hydrogen looping from the pre-reduction process gas. It is shown that... [more]

Detection of Contaminants in Hydrogen Fuel for Fuel Cell Electrical Vehicles with Sensors—Available Technology, Testing Protocols and Implementation Challenges
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: FCEV, hydrogen quality, sensors, testing protocols
Europe’s low-carbon energy policy favors a greater use of fuel cells and technologies based on hydrogen used as a fuel. Hydrogen delivered at the hydrogen refueling station must be compliant with requirements stated in different standards. Currently, the quality control process is performed by offline analysis of the hydrogen fuel. It is, however, beneficial to continuously monitor at least some of the contaminants onsite using chemical sensors. For hydrogen quality control with regard to contaminants, high sensitivity, integration parameters, and low cost are the most important requirements. In this study, we have reviewed the existing sensor technologies to detect contaminants in hydrogen, then discussed the implementation of sensors at a hydrogen refueling stations, described the state-of-art in protocols to perform assessment of these sensor technologies, and, finally, identified the gaps and needs in these areas. It was clear that sensors are not yet commercially available for all... [more]

Methanol Steam Reforming on Bimetallic Catalysts Based on In and Nb Doped Titania or Zirconia: A Support Effect
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bimetallic catalyst, doped titania, hydrogen production, methanol steam reforming, support effect
Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is considered an effective method for hydrogen storage and to generate high-quality hydrogen for fuel cells. In this work, a comprehensive investigation of the methanol steam reforming process using a bimetallic Pt−Rh and Cu−Ni based on different oxide supports is presented. Highly dispersed titania and zirconia doped with indium and niobium ions were synthesized by sol−gel method. The effect of the nature and quantity of the dopant cation (In, Nb) on the catalytic performance of titania supported metal catalysts was investigated. The conclusions obtained show a significant effect of both the metal alloy and the oxide support nature on the activity and selectivity of the methanol steam reforming process. Pt−Rh alloy catalyst shows higher hydrogen yield, but its selectivity in the MSR process is lower than for the catalysts containing the Cu0.8-Ni0.2 alloy. Heterovalent indium doping of titania leads to the catalytic activity increase. It was suggested tha... [more]

Fundamental Study on Ammonia Low-NOx Combustion Using Two-Stage Combustion by Parallel Air Jets
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ammonia, burner, NOx, two-stage combustion
Ammonia, which has advantages over hydrogen in terms of storage and transportation, is increasingly expected to become a carbon-free fuel. However, the reduction of fuel NOx emitted from ammonia combustion is an unavoidable challenge. There is the report that two-stage combustion with parallel independent jets could achieve Low-NOx combustion under ammonia/methane co-firing conditions. In order to further improve NOx reduction, we experimentally evaluated the effects of secondary air nozzle parameters, such as nozzle diameter and nozzle locations, on combustion characteristics in two-stage combustion of ammonia/natural gas co-firing using parallel independent jets. As a result of the experiments under various secondary air nozzle conditions, it was found that under the conditions where NOx was significantly reduced, the peak temperature in the furnace was observed at 300−500 mm in the axial direction from the burner, and then the temperature decreased toward the downstream of the furna... Reaction Monitoring by Ultrasounds in a Pseudohomogeneous Medium: Triglyceride Ethanolysis for Biodiesel Production
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, ethanolysis, monitoring, ultrasounds
The sound propagation speed measurement us is used for monitoring triglyceride ethanolysis in a broad range of reaction conditions (mainly, temperature: 23−50 °C; ethanol/oil: from 6 to 24 mol/mol). Experimentally, us slightly increased with the reaction time in all cases as a result of the contribution of its dynamic mixture components. Nomoto’s expression for homogeneous mixtures offered suitable us estimation but with values notably higher than the experimental ones due to the resistance to sound propagation offered by the ethanol/oil interphase (non-homogeneous medium). Our strategy was based on both the comparison of the experimental us values and the theoretical ones correlated by means of triglyceride conversion and on the estimation of the sound speed of oil/ethanol that could emulate the resistance offered by the interphase. The evolution of the reactions was predicted quite well for all the experiments carried out with very different reaction rates. Nevertheless, at the begin... [more]

Research on Fault Tree Reconstruction Based on Contingency
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: contingency, fault tree reconstruction, probability AND gate, probability OR gate
The fault tree analysis (FTA) method is an important analysis method for safety system engineering. Traditional accident analysis theory agrees that basic events lead to top events, but it does not fully consider that the accident process is accidental, and the calculation results exaggerate the probability of accident occurrence. This paper selects typical collision accidents, analyzes the shortcomings of the existing fault tree, indicates that there is a contingency in the accident process, constructs a probability fault tree based on the traditional fault tree, and puts forward concepts of “probability AND gate” and “probability OR gate”. In addition, based on the traditional quantitative analysis method of fault trees, calculations of the occurrence probability, probability importance coefficient, and critical importance coefficient of top events are modified, and the modified quantitative calculation is applied to accident cases.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), power electronics, real-time control, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Vienna rectifier, wind turbine system
Vienna converters have several advantages, including low construction costs, improved total harmonics, and considerable reliability. Generally, they are used in applications with a high switching frequency, particularly in telecommunications, and their use in power generation systems is recent but promising. They can be an interesting solution for medium and large wind power systems as they have the advantage of a high power density compared to traditional two-level converters. In this paper, a wind energy production system based on a Vienna rectifier and the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is proposed. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the performance of the vector control strategy of the PMSG associated with the Vienna rectifier considering the real conditions of wind power systems. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy are evaluated through the simulations in MATLAB/Simulink and experimental tests based on a laboratory prototyp... [more]

Hydrodynamic Behavior of a Pump as Turbine under Transient Flow Conditions
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: centrifugal pumps as turbines, efficiency, stability characteristics, transient flow conditions
Centrifugal pumps as turbines (PATs) are widely used in chemical engineering for recycling the abundant energy from high-pressure fluid. The operation of PATs is significantly affected by their upstream conditions, which are not steady (i.e., with a constant flow rate) in reality, thus, research on the flow mechanism of PATs under transient conditions should be considered of higher importance. In this study, a numerical model of a PAT was developed by employing the sliding mesh method to describe turbine rotation, and a user-defined function (UDF) for characterizing transient flow conditions. Corresponding experiments were also conducted to provide validation results for the simulation, and the simulation results agreed well with the experimental outcomes. The instantaneous characteristic curves under the current working conditions were obtained for different transient flow rates. The results show that the turbine’s efficiency is significantly affected by transient flow conditions. In... [more]

Tilt Angle’s Effects on Free Convection Heat Transfer Coefficient inside a Water-Filled Rectangular Parallelepiped Enclosure
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: empirical correlations, experimental heat transfer, inclined parallelepiped enclosure, natural convection heat transfer
The effect of tilt angle on free convection heat transfer is investigated experimentally inside a rectangular parallelepiped cavity filled with water. The cavity had the dimensions S × S × H (m3), where S was the inside length, and H was the inside height of the cavity. The lower surface was subject to constant heat flux, and the upper surface was cooled by a stream of ambient air. The free convection heat transfer data were generated using different uniform heat fluxes. Four tilt angles were considered: 0°, 30°, 60°, and 90°. The surface temperature measurements were collected 10 h after the experimental run to ensure that a steady-state was reached. It was noticeable that the free convection heat transfer strongly depended on the tilt angle and the modified Rayleigh numbers. The 3D results showed that the Nusselt number reached a maximum at 60° at a fixed modified Rayleigh number. An enhancement in the Nusselt number at any tilt angle was observed over that of a z... Quantifying the Economic Benefits of Using Erosion Protective Coatings in a Low-Pressure Compressor (Aero-Engine): A Case Study Evaluation
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coatings, compressor, cost benefits analysis, solid particle erosion, surface roughness
Gas turbine engines (GTEs) frequently operate in desert environments where the main components are exposed to erosive media such as sand and dust. In these circumstances, a crucial problem, particularly with compressor blades, is solid particle erosion (SPE). Positioned in the front of the GTE, the compressors suffer most from SPE in terms of inflicting damage on compressor hardware such as blades, decreasing the GTE’s working life and increasing fuel consumption, energy losses, and efficiency losses. Results obtained from Turbomatch, an in-house performance tool, showed that degraded compressors can experience increased turbine entry temperature (TET) and specific fuel consumption (SFC), which leads to a significant increase in the operating, maintenance and component replacement costs, in addition to fuel costs. Fitting erosion protective coatings (EPCs) is a conventional approach to reduce SPE of the compressor blades of aeroengines. Titanium nitride (TiN), applied via physical vapo... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: control strategy, field-oriented control, flatness, maximum power, reference trajectory, wind turbine
Wind energy is an alternative to meet the growing energy demand. Control of wind turbines should help the reliability and stable operation of the power grid. Furthermore, they should respect the technical requirements according to the grid codes to inject the wind energy into the grid. In this paper, a well-known field-oriented control (FOC) method and a new control method based on the flatness properties (FBC) are presented and compared. These control methods are applied to a wind energy conversion system (WECS), which connects a variable-speed wind turbine (WT) based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to the grid via a back-to-back converter. The main aim of both control methods is to extract the maximum power from the wind. For this purpose, the mathematical model of each subsystem, i.e., WT, PMSG, and electrical grid, is presented. To evaluate and to compare the dynamic behavior of the high-power wind energy conversion system, it is modeled and the control strategie... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic performance, locomotive diesel engine, Miller cycle, NOX
In this paper, the simulation model was established based on GT-Power software, and a scheme using the Miller cycle based on biodiesel was proposed. Taking diesel engine 16V265H as the research object, the accuracy of the simulation model was verified by experiments. Combined with the comparison of physical and chemical characteristics of biodiesel and the experimental analysis of biodiesel under three different combinations, it was concluded that low ratio biodiesel was the best choice to meet the power, economy, and emission performance of diesel. Through the simulation scheme of the two Miller cycles for pure diesel (B0) and biodiesel (B10) under different load conditions at 1000 rpm, the NOx emission performance of pure diesel in a Miller cycle was significantly improved. On this basis, the comprehensive performance of the two Miller cycles was compared with biodiesel. The results showed that both the Miller cycles could reduce NOx emission. February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal devolatilization, MILD oxy-combustion, oxy-fuel combustion, volatile releasing
There has been little research on volatile releasing characteristics of pulverized coals under moderate or intense low-oxygen dilution (MILD) oxy-combustion (MO) conditions. For the first time, volatile releasing characteristics of bituminous coal and semi-anthracite under both MILD air-combustion (MA) and MO conditions were investigated using a flat-flame assisted entrained flow reactor. Both heating rate (~105 K/s) and residence time (65 ms) were carefully selected to mimic the conditions in typical industrial boilers. The combustion processes and properties of the volatiles were characterized through direct observation and char analysis. The results showed that the lower diffusion rate of the volatile in CO2 resulted in the decreasing of the volatile envelope flame size and a longer volatile burnout time (more than 20%). For bituminous coal (volatile content of 25%), the lower amount of apparent volatile yield under MO conditions reduced the heating value of the volatile. For semi-a... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal permeability, fractal, fractal dimension, fracture network, pore media
During methane extraction, the permeability of a coal seam is the vital factor affecting recovery. Although the permeability of a coal seam and its relationship with porosity have been studied in a few works, the calculation process of coal seam permeability is usually too simplistic or neglects the influence of microscopic fracture structures. Statistical research shows that the permeability of coal seams with the same porosity and different fracture structures is quite different. For the purpose of quantitatively investigating the contribution of fractures and pore structure in coal seams, a fractal permeability model considering the microstructure of coal seam fracture is established in this paper. The correctness of the model is verified by comparing with the previous research results. Then, the influence of the microscopic fracture structure on the equivalent permeability is analyzed. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon-neutral target, electric vehicles, GHG emissions, waste lithium-ion battery recycling
Driven by the global campaign against the dual pressures of environmental pollution and resource exhaustion, the Chinese government has proposed the target of carbon neutrality. On account of this, the increasing number of waste lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) from electric vehicles (EVs) is causing emergent waste-management challenges and it is urgent that we implement an appropriate waste-LIB recycling program, which would bring significant environmental benefits. In order to comprehensively estimate the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from waste-LIB recycling, the GHG savings also need to be taken into account. Based on the requirements of a carbon-neutral target, this study adopted the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) method to established a mathematical model for measuring the GHG emissions and GHG savings of waste LIBs and a numerical experiment is presented to verify the model. Keywords: currents turbines farm, hydrodynamic, marine renewable energy, morphodynamic, Sisyphe, Telemac-3D
As marine renewable resources begin to become a feasible energy source, it becomes crucial to investigate the nearshore impact of hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes. As part of the implementation of turbines in the numerical modeling environment of Telemac-3D and Sisyphe modules, we conducted a 10-year run to evaluate nearshore impacts of turbines in the flow. We used five criteria to define viable locations. Turbines sites were added to a conversion energy model coupled into the hydrodynamic model in order to develop properly the flow changes towards the energy conversion process. The results revealed that in the three chosen spots, turbines were not converting equally the current energy within the site. In fact, the turbines located on the outer side of the farm developed greater conversion rates. This impacted the nearshore in the following ways: (1) the decrease in the currents intensity that generates strong adjustments in the water column, breaking the natural pattern of ve... [more]

Keywords: EGR, fuel economy, GDI engine, Miller cycle, Simulation
A one-dimensional (1D) simulation calculation model was created using GT-Power software to investigate the effect of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in concert with the Miller cycle on engine fuel economy and using a 1.5 T gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine as the source engine. The engine was tested under partial loading, full loading, and declared working conditions. The results show that under partial load, the Miller cycle could improve engine fuel economy by reducing pumping losses. In the low-speed 1000 r/min full load region, the Miller cycle had a significant effect on increasing the engine fuel economy. When the Miller intensity was −29 °CA, the fuel consumption decreased by a maximum of 10.5%. At medium speeds, 2000 r/min to 3600 r/min, the Miller cycle did not improve fuel economy significantly. For the Miller cycle with late intake valve closure (LIVC), when the EGR rate was about 7%, the fuel consumption was reduced by about 1.3% compared with the original engine at... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, catalytic activity, co-pyrolysis, gasification reactivity, separate
Co-gasification of coal and biomass is an important way to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and achieve the efficient utilization of biomass resources. Two kinds of biomass containing corn straw (CS) and poplar sawdust (PS) were blended with different coal. Then, the coal char was separated from the blended char after co-pyrolysis based on the difference in particle size. The structural properties, including alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs), microcrystalline structures, and molecular structures of the char samples were analyzed. Gasification reactivity of the char was determined by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Results indicated that K and Mg contents in biomass evaporated easily and deposited on coal char, resulting in the increase in those in coal char during co-pyrolysis, and then the AAEMs contents in coal char were determined by the AAEM species and contents in biomass. Keywords: carbon emission, electric vehicle battery, greedy algorithm, recycling network design, vehicle routing problem
Driven by energy shortages and climate concerns, the electric vehicles are popular around the world with their energy-saving and environmentally friendly advantages. As electric vehicle batteries (EVBs) mainly use lithium batteries, and the batteries’ performance decreases with the increase of charging times, a large number of batteries are entering the end-of-life (EoL) stage. Recycling and reuse of EVBs are effective ways to reduce environmental pollution and promote resources utilization and is now a top priority. Building a recycling network is the foundation of battery recycling. However, there are few studies on battery recycling networks and the construction of recycling networks is expensive, which impedes the sustainable development of electric vehicles. Based on this, recycling network design is critical for EVB recycling. This paper first analyzes three strategies to deal with used batteries: remanufacturing, reuse, and recycling materials. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Aemion™, anion exchange membrane, coulombic efficiency, Nafion, vanadium crossover, vanadium redox flow battery, water uptake
The vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is a promising and commercially available technology that poses advantageous features for stationary energy storage. A key component of the VRFB in terms of cost and system efficiency is the membrane. In recent years, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have gained interest in VRFB research as they in general exhibit lower vanadium crossover due to a more substantial Donnan exclusion effect. In this study, a low-resistance flow cell was developed and the electrochemical performance of Aemion™ anion exchange membranes AF1-HNN5-50-X, AF1-HNN8-50-X and AF1-ENN8-50-X were compared against commonly used cation exchange membranes, Nafion® 211 and 212. The VRFB using AF1-ENN8-50-X exhibited superior performance versus Nafion® 212 regarding cycling efficiency and rate performance.
