Volumetric Measurements of Methane-Coal Adsorption and Desorption Isotherms—Effects of Equations of State and Implication for Initial Gas Reserves
Jamiu M. Ekundayo, Reza Rezaee
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption and desorption isotherms, equation of state, gas compressibility factors, medium volatile bituminous coal, NIST-Refprop, original gas in-place, sorption hysteresis
This study presents the effects of equations of state (EOSs) on methane adsorption capacity, sorption hysteresis and initial gas reserves of a medium volatile bituminous coal. The sorption experiments were performed, at temperatures of 25 °C and 40 °C and up to 7MPa pressure, using a high-pressure volumetric analyzer (HPVA-II). The measured isotherms were parameterized with the modified (three-parameter) Langmuir model. Gas compressibility factors were calculated using six popular equations of state and the results were compared with those obtained using gas compressibility factors from NIST-Refprop® (which implies McCarty and Arp’s EOS for Z-factor of helium and Setzmann and Wagner’s EOS for that of methane). Significant variations were observed in the resulting isotherms and associated model parameters with EOS. Negligible hysteresis was observed with NIST-refprop at both experimental temperatures, with the desorption isotherm being slightly lower than the adsorption isotherm at 25 °... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: borehole thermal energy storage, ground heat exchanger, ground source heat pump, office building, system performance, uncertainty analysis
When the new student center at Stockholm University in Sweden was completed in the fall of 2013 it was thoroughly instrumented. The 6300 m2 four-story building with offices, a restaurant, study lounges, and meeting rooms was designed to be energy efficient with a planned total energy use of 25 kWh/m2/year. Space heating and hot water are provided by a ground source heat pump (GSHP) system consisting of five 40 kW off-the-shelf water-to-water heat pumps connected to 20 boreholes in hard rock, drilled to a depth of 200 m. Space cooling is provided by direct cooling from the boreholes. This paper uses measured performance data from Studenthuset to calculate the actual thermal performance of the GSHP system during one of its early years of operation. Monthly system coefficients-of-performance and coefficients-of-performance for both heating and cooling operation are presented. In the first months of operation, several problems were corrected, leading to improved performance. This paper pro... [more]
Energy Consumption and Trade Openness Nexus in Egypt: Asymmetry Analysis

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymmetrical effects, economic growth, energy consumption, trade openness
Trade openness may support the economic growth of any country but its environmental effects due to increasing energy consumption cannot be ignored. This research hypothesizes the asymmetrical effects of both economic growth and trade openness on the energy consumption of Egypt from 1971−2014. Our estimates suggest that both economic growth and trade openness have asymmetrical effects on the energy consumption in both long and short runs because magnitude of the effects are found unequal. Both increasing and decreasing economic growth have positive effects on the energy consumption in the long and short runs except an insignificant effect of decreasing economic growth in the short run. Increasing and decreasing trade openness have also positive effects on the energy consumption in the long and short runs except an insignificant effect of decreasing trade openness in the long run. The increasing energy consumption, as results of increasing economic growth and/or trade openness, may have... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat transfer enhancement, internal cooling channel, mist/steam cooling, numerical simulation
This study numerically examines the effect of actual gas turbine operating conditions on heat transfer characteristics in a ribbed passage with mist/steam cooling. A 60° ribbed passage with aspect ratio of 1/1 was investigated at Reynolds number of 300,000, and steam cooling was used to provide a contrast. Three main factors were considered: coolant temperature, operating pressure, and wall heat flux density. The heat transfer enhancement mechanism of mist/steam cooling was explored, and the results showed that the heat transfer performance of mist/steam cooling was superior to steam cooling. When the coolant temperature varied from 300 to 500 °C, the average Nusselt number of mist/steam cooling decreased by 26.6%, and the heat transfer enhancement ratio dropped from 15% to 10%. As operating pressure increased, the heat transfer performance factor of mist/steam firstly increased and then decreased. At an operating pressure of 1.5 MPa, the heat transfer achieved its optimal performance,... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: buck-boost inverter, MPPT, multi-input inverters, PV
This paper presents a multi-input Ćuk-derived Buck-Boost voltage source inverter (CBBVSI) for Photovoltaic (PV) systems. The proposed topology consists of a single-stage DC-AC inverter that combines both DC-DC and DC-AC stages. The DC-DC stage is used for stepping-up the voltage from the PV generator. Simultaneously, the DC-AC stage is used for interfacing the PV source with the AC grid. The topology allows three sources to utilize the antiparallel diodes for each inverter leg for transferring the energy. The proposed system exhibits several features such as a reduction of the number of components compared to typical two-stage structures, and Split-Source Inverter (SSI), and Z-Source Inverter (ZSI) topologies. Moreover, the power of each PV source can be harvested either simultaneously or separately since independent Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is performed. The system was simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software and a 1 kW laboratory prototype was implemented to verify the ope... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: marine two-stroke diesel engine, mixing controlled combustion model, performance simulation, real-time modeling
The paper presents a performance prediction model of marine low-speed two-stroke diesel engines based on an advanced MCC (mixture controlled combustion) model coupled with a fuel injection model. Considering the time of real calculation, the so-called “concentrated exhausting gas” scavenging model and the working process model are used in the present work, and improved by introducing the ratio of pure combustion product over the total gas mass in the cylinder as an expression of the working medium components. The reaction rate model in the zero-dimensional MCC model is improved by introducing the fraction of combustion product in the fuel spray, and the relationship between the combustion model and scavenging quality is established. Meanwhile, the combustion model was simplified in the diffusion combustion phases and integrated with the fuel injection model in order to respond to the change of injection profile and injection timing. A large-scale low-speed marine diesel engine was used... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hard coal, methane emission, outburst, unipore model
The goal of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of gas emission during a methane and coal outburst based on the unipore Crank diffusion model for spherical grains and plane sheets. Two occurrences in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin were analyzed: an outburst in a Zofiówka coal mine in 2005 and an outburst in a Budryk coal mine in 2012. Those two outbursts differed considerably. The first one was connected with an unidentified tectonic disturbance in the form of a triple, interlocking fault, and the other one is an example of an outburst in an area free from tectonic disturbances. The model analysis required laboratory tests in order to determine the sorption properties of coals from post-outburst masses. Sorption isotherms and the values of the effective diffusion coefficient were specified. The post-outburst masses were subjected to sieve analysis and the grain composition curves were plotted. The researchers also used the measurement data provided by proper mine services, such as t... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage system, frequency, grid integration, renewable energy sources, voltage
In recent years, many applications have been developed for the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) into the grid in order to satisfy the demand requirement of a clean and reliable electricity generation. Increasing the number of RES creates uncertainty in load and power supply generation, which also presents an additional strain on the system. These uncertainties will affect the voltage and frequency variation, stability, protection, and safety issues at fault levels. RES present non-linear characteristics, which requires effective coordination control methods. This paper presents the stability issues and solutions associated with the integration of RES within the grid.

Keywords: elastic light scattering, fuel comparison, laser-induced incandescence, pre-vaporized diesel combustion
In the present work, a novel burner capable of complete pre-vaporization and stationary combustion of diesel fuel in a laminar diffusion flame has been developed to investigate the effect of the chemical composition of diesel fuel on soot formation. For the characterization of soot formation during diesel combustion we performed a comprehensive morphological characterization of the soot and determined its concentration by coupling elastic light scattering (ELS) and laser-induced incandescence (LII) measurements. With ELS, radii of gyration of aggregates were measured within a point-wise measurement volume, LII was employed in an imaging approach for a 2D-analysis of the soot volume fraction. We carried out LII and ELS measurements at different positions in the flame for two different fuel types, revealing the effects of small modifications of the fuel composition on soot emission during diesel combustion.

Keywords: cascaded control, electric vehicle control, electric vehicle modeling, Lyapunov techniques, nonlinear systems, power electronics, stability analysis
Electric vehicles (EVs), during a route, should normally operate at the desired speed by effectively controlling the power that flows between their batteries and the electric motor/generator. To implement this task, in this paper, the voltage source AC/DC converter is considered as a controlled power interface between the electric machine and the output of the DC storage device; the DC/DC converter is used to automatically regulate the battery operating condition in accordance to the profile of the acting on the vehicle wheels, unknown external torque. Particularly, the speed is continuously regulated by the vehicle driver via the pedal while all other regulations for absorbing or regenerating energy are internally controlled. The driver command is acting as speed reference input on a PI outer-loop motor speed controller which, in its turn, drives a fast P inner-loop current controller operating in cascaded mode. In a similar manner, the machine and the battery performance are self-reg... [more]

Keywords: alternative fuel, biodiesel, health effect, particulate matter, PM
Rising pollution levels resulting from vehicular emissions and the depletion of petroleum-based fuels have left mankind in pursuit of alternatives. There are stringent regulations around the world to control the particulate matter (PM) emissions from internal combustion engines. To this end, researchers have been exploring different measures to reduce PM emissions such as using modern combustion techniques, after-treatment systems such as diesel particulate filter (DPF) and gasoline particulate filter (GPF), and alternative fuels. Alternative fuels such as biodiesel (derived from edible, nonedible, and waste resources), alcohol fuels (ethanol, n-butanol, and n-pentanol), and fuel additives have been investigated over the last decade. PM characterization and toxicity analysis is still growing as researchers are developing methodologies to reduce particle emissions using various approaches such as fuel modification and after-treatment devices. To address these aspects, this review paper... [more]

Keywords: bioanode, biofilm, carbon cloth, cold low-pressure nitrogen plasma, Geobacter sulfurreducens, hydrogen production, microbial electrolysis cell, stainless steel
The anode activity in a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is known to be a limiting factor in hydrogen production. In this study, the MEC was constructed using different anode materials and a platinum-coated carbon-cloth cathode (CC). The anodes were comprised of CC, stainless steel (SS), and a combination of the two (COMB). The CC and SS anodes were also treated with plasma to improve their surface morphology and hydrophilic properties (CCP and SSP, respectively). A combined version of CCP attached to SS was also applied (COMBP). After construction of the MEC using the different anodes, we conducted electrochemical measurements and examination of biofilm viability. Under an applied voltage of 0.6 V (Ag/AgCl), the currents of a MEC based on CCP and COMBP were 11.66 ± 0.1331 and 16.36 ± 0.3172 A m−2, respectively, which are about three times higher compared to the untreated CC and COMB. A MEC utilizing an untreated SS anode exhibited current of only 0.3712 ± 0.0108 A m−2. The highest bi... [more]

Keywords: Biofuels, DOP, engine performance, microalgae, NOx, PM, PN
Physico-chemical properties of microalgae biodiesel depend on the microalgae species and oil extraction method. Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) is a clear, colourless and viscous liquid as a plasticizer. It is used in the processing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin and polymers. A new potential biofuel, hydrothermally liquefied microalgae bio-oil can contain nearly 11% (by mass) of DOP. This study investigated the feasibility of using up to 20% DOP blended in 80% diesel fuel (v/v) in an existing diesel engine, and assessed the performance and exhaust emissions. Despite reasonable differences in density, viscosity, surface tension, and boiling point, blends of DOP and diesel fuel were found to be entirely miscible and no separation was observed at any stage during prolonged miscibility tests. The engine test study found a slight decrease in peak cylinder pressure, brake, and indicated mean effective pressure, indicated power, brake power, and indicated and brake thermal efficiency with DOP ble... Keywords: combustion, Diesel, droplet, micro-explosion, viscosity, water-diesel emulsion
Diesel fuel exhibits excellent combustion characteristics and stability. However, diesel use is becoming restricted because of its associated environmental problems. Fuel emulsification, which increases efficiency and reduces pollution, became the solution of environmental problem. In this study, five water:diesel emulsions with mass ratios (0.3, 0.6, 1.0, 1.2, and 1.5) via ultrasonication were synthesized with and without surfactant. The optimal water:diesel ratio (=1:1) of an emulsion containing the surfactant was found by analyzing fuel concentration, mixing time, and viscosity. The combustion characteristics of single-droplet optimal emulsions were studied through ignition delay, burning rate, and total droplet lifetime at high temperature (400−700 °C) and pressure (1−15 bar), and micro-explosion phenomenon was observed. Although the ignition delay of emulsion increased, the total lifetime of the emulsion droplet was lower than that of diesel under 5 bar, 600 °C condition.

Keywords: air compressibility, oscillating water column, tank testing, valves, Wave Energy
Tupperwave is a wave energy device based on the Oscillating-Water-Column (OWC) concept. Unlike a conventional OWC, which creates a bidirectional air flow across the self-rectifying turbine, the Tupperwave device uses rectifying valves to create a smooth unidirectional air flow, which is harnessed by a unidirectional turbine. This paper deals with the development and validation of time-domain numerical models from wave to pneumatic power for the Tupperwave device and the conventional OWC device using the same floating spar buoy structure. The numerical models are built using coupled hydrodynamic and thermodynamic equations. The isentropic assumption is used to describe the thermodynamic processes. A tank testing campaign of the two devices at 1/24th scale is described, and the results are used to validate the numerical models. The capacity of the innovative Tupperwave OWC concept to convert wave energy into useful pneumatic energy to the turbine is assessed and compared to the correspon... [more]
A Proportional Plus a Hysteretic Term Control Design: A Throttle Experimental Emulation to Wind Turbines Pitch Control
Leonardo Acho
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electronic circuit, experimental realization, hysteresis, throttle emulator, wind turbine pitch control
Pitch control is a relevant issue in wind turbines to properly operate the angle of the blades. Therefore, this control system pitches the blades usually a few degrees every time the wind changes in order to keep the rotor blades at the required angle thus controlling the rotational speed of the turbine. All the same time, the control of the pitch angle is not easy due to the system behavior being highly nonlinear. Consequently, the main objective of this paper is to depict an easy to implement control design based on a proportional controller and a hysteretic term to an emulator pitch control system in wind turbines. This emulator is just an automotive throttle device. This mechanical body dynamically captures some hard non-linearities presented in pitch wind turbine mechanisms, such as backlash, asymmetrical non-lineal effects, friction, and load variations. Even under strong non-linear effects that are difficult to model, a proportional controller and a hysteretic term may satisfy t... [more]

Keywords: demand response, Energy Efficiency, energy flexibility, energy performance of buildings directive, load shifting, smart buildings, smart readiness indicator
With the third revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) issued in July 2018, the assessment of buildings now has to include a Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) to consider the fact that buildings must play an active role within the context of an intelligent energy system. In order to support the development of the SRI, this article describes a methodology for a simplified quantitative assessment of the load shifting potential of buildings. The aim of the methodology is to provide a numerical, model-based approach, which allows buildings to be categorized based on their energy storage capacity, load shifting potential and their subsequent interaction with the grid. A key aspect is the applicability within the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) in order to provide an easy to use calculation, which is applied in addition to the already established energy efficiency, building services and renewable energy assessments. The developed methodology is being applied to th... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel, diesel engine, engine parts deterioration, fuel injection, fuel injectors, fuel pump
The application of biodiesel blends is known to significantly affect operation of diesel-injection equipment, especially the injectors and fuel pump. This paper summarizes experience on this subject from burning fuel blends with high-percentages of biodiesel (up to 70%) on a common-rail, high-pressure-injection diesel engine and a conventional DI engine. Both engines were unable to start after running for 100 h each and staying shut off for more than two months. In order to understand the wear characteristics of the injector nozzle, pump pistons, and elastomer parts (in the case of the high-pressure pump of the common-rail engine), due to the prolonged operation with high-percentage biodiesel blends, their injectors and pumps parts were examined and compared by performing normal photography and low magnification microscopy. Additionally, the various elastomer parts of the high-pressure fuel pump of the common-rail engine were examined for wear and deterioration. The results are compare... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel, bioethanol, Combustion, common-rail, emissions
In the present study, the effects of adding of bioethanol as a fuel additive to a coconut biodiesel-diesel fuel blend on engine performance, exhaust emissions, and combustion characteristics were studied in a medium-duty, high-pressure common-rail turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine under different torque conditions. The test fuels used were fossil diesel fuels, B20 (20% biodiesel blend), B20E5 (20% biodiesel + 5% bioethanol blend), and B20E10 (20% biodiesel + 10% bioethanol blend). The experimental results demonstrated that there was an improvement in the brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) and brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of the blends at the expense of brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) for each bioethanol blend. An increment in nitrogen oxide (NOx) across the entire load range, except at low load conditions, was found with a higher percentage of the bioethanol blend. Also, it was found that simultaneous smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) emission reduction from the base... [more]

Keywords: cost of energy, floating wind turbine, motion stability, offshore wind
Floating turbines are attracting increasing interest today. However, the power generation efficiency of a floating turbine is highly dependent on its motion stability in sea water. This issue is more marked, particularly when the floating turbines operate in relatively shallow water. In order to address this issue, a new concept motion stabilizer is studied in this paper. It is a completely passive device consisting of a number of heave plates. The plates are connected to the foundation of the floating wind turbine via structural arms. Since the heave plates are completely, rather than partially, exposed to water, all surfaces of them can be fully utilized to create the damping forces required to stabilize the floating wind turbine. Moreover, their stabilizing effect can be further amplified due to the application of the structural arms. This is because torques will be generated by the damping forces via the structural arms, and then applied to stabilizing the floating turbine. To veri... [more]

Presently, the only offshore project for enhanced oil recovery using carbon dioxide, known as CO2-EOR, is in Brazil. Several desk studies have been undertaken, without any projects being implemented. The objective of this review is to investigate barriers to the implementation of large-scale offshore CO2-EOR projects, to identify recent technology developments, and to suggest non-technological incentives that may enable implementation. We examine differences between onshore and offshore CO2-EOR, emerging technologies that could enable projects, as well as approaches and regulatory requirements that may help overcome barriers. Our review shows that there are few, if any, technical barriers to offshore CO2-EOR. However, there are many other barriers to the implementation of offshore CO2-EOR, including: High investment and operation costs, uncertainties about reservoir performance, limited access of CO2 supply, lack of business models, and uncertainties about regulations. Keywords: Energy Storage, heat losses, molten salt, temperature distribution
Two-tank molten salt heat storage systems are considered to be the most mature thermal storage technology in solar thermal power plants. As the key part of the system, the thermal performance of molten salt tanks is of great importance. An experimental thermal storage system with a new type of molten salt as a thermal energy storage medium has been built to investigate the temperature distribution of molten salt inside the tank during the cooling process from 550 °C to 180 °C. The temperature distribution of the salt was obtained, which reveals that temperature stratification appears at the bottom of the tank within the height of 200 mm. The position, with the maximum temperature difference of 16.1 °C, is at the lower edges of the molten salt storage tank. The temperature distribution was also measured to deepen our understanding of the insulation foundation, which shows that the maximum temperature appears at the middle upper part of the foundation and decreases radially. The heat los... [more]

Keywords: discounted unit cost of electricity generation, flywheel energy storage system, genetic algorithm heuristics, optimisation, wind power plant
The paper presents issues of optimisation of a wind power plant−energy storage system (WPP-ESS) arrangement operating in a specific geographical location. An algorithm was developed to minimise the unit discounted cost of electricity generation in a system containing a wind power plant and flywheel energy storage. In order to carry out the task, population heuristics of the genetic algorithm were used with modifications introduced by the author (taking into account the coefficient of variation of the generation in the quasi-static term of the penalty and the selection method). The set of inequality restrictions related to the technical parameters of turbines and energy storage and the parameters of energy storage management has been taken into account with the application of the Powell−Skolnick penalty function (Michalewicz modification). The results of sample optimisation calculations for two wind power plants of 2 MW were presented. The effects achieved in the process of optimisation... [more]

Keywords: butylated hydroxyanisole, fatty acid methyl esters, Rancimat method, response surface, tert-butylhydroquinone, viscosity
Biodiesel is gaining more and more importance due to environmental issues. This way, alternative and sustainable crops as new biofuel sources are demanded. Safflower could be a sustainable raw material for biodiesel production, showing one disadvantage (as many biodiesels from vegetable oils), that is, a short oxidative stability. Consequently, the use of antioxidants to increase this parameter is mandatory. The aim of this research work was to assess the effect of two antioxidants (butylated hydroxyanisole, BHA, and tert-butylhydroquinone, TBHQ) on the oxidative stability of safflower biodiesel, which was characterized paying attention to its fatty acid methyl ester profile. For oxidative stability, the Rancimat method was used, whereas for fatty acid profile gas chromatography was selected. For the remaining parameters, the methods were followed according to the UNE-EN 14214 standard. The overall conclusion was that safflower biodiesel could comply with the standard, thanks to the us... Keywords: gas hydrate, hydrate combustion, hydrate flame spectrum, hydrate ignition, methane clathrate, methane hydrate, watery flames
This research studies the structure of flames that use laboratory-produced methane hydrates as fuel, specifically for the purpose of identifying their key combustion characteristics. Combustion of a methane hydrate involves multiple phase changes, as large quantities of solid clathrate transform into fuel gas, water vapor, and liquid water during burning. With its unique and stable fuel energy storage capability, studies in combustion are focused on the potential usage of hydrates as an alternative fuel source or on their fire safety. Considering methane hydrate as a conventional combustion energy resource and studying hydrate combustion using canonical experimental configurations or methodology are challenges. This paper presents methane hydrate flame geometries from the time they can be ignited through their extinguishment. Ignition and burning behavior depend on the hydrate initial temperature and whether the clathrates are chunks or monolithic shapes. These behaviors are the subjec... [more]
