Use of Reduced Graphene Oxide to Modify Melamine and Polyurethane for the Removal of Organic and Oil Wastes
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Diesel, melamine, oil, polyurethane, reduced graphene oxide, sorption, XPS
Methods for obtaining efficient sorption materials based on highly porous melamine and polyurethane matrices modified with reduced graphene oxide were developed. These materials are promising for solving environmental problems such as water pollution with organic products by sorption treatment. Reduced graphene oxides (rGOs) were synthesized from graphene oxide suspensions using potassium hydroxide, ascorbic acid or hydrazine hydrate. Composites with obtained rGO and melamine and polyurethane foam were produced for further characterization. The composites demonstrate high sorption of organic pollutants (oil, diesel fuel and gasoline) and low sorption of water. The composites were comprehensively analyzed by physicochemical techniques (SEM, XPS, Raman spectroscopy, UV−Vis) to elucidate the mechanism of sorption.

Spatiotemporal Distribution and Complementarity of Wind and Solar Energy in China
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: China, solar energy resources, spatial and temporal distribution, time complementarity, water energy resources, wind energy resources
China is rich in wind- and solar-energy resources. In recent years, under the auspices of the “double carbon target,” the government has significantly increased funding for the development of wind and solar resources. However, because wind and solar energy are intermittent and their spatial distribution is uneven, the profits obtained by the developers of wind- and solar-energy resources are unstable and relatively low. For this reason, we analyze in this article the spatiotemporal variations in wind and solar energy resources in China and the temporal complementarity of wind and solar energy by applying a Spearman correlation coefficient based on the Daily Value Dataset of China Surface Climate Data V3.0. Finally, we also strive to harmonize regions where wind and solar resources are less complementary by introducing hydro-energy resources. The results reveal that wind energy and solar energy resources in China undergo large interannual fluctuations and show significant spatial hetero... [more]

Co-Gasification of Refuse Derived Fuel and Wood Chips in the Nong Bua Dual Fluidised Bed Gasification Power Plant in Thailand
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: co-gasification, dual fluidised bed, Nong Bua gasification power plant, refuse derived fuel
Co-gasification of refuse derived fuel (RDF) and wood chips was experimented in the Nong Bua dual fluidised bed steam gasifier in Thailand. The effect of the mass of RDF pellets in the feed fuel (R/F ratio) was investigated on the performance of the entire process conditions and the product gas properties. The test results showed that the addition of small mass ratio of RDF pellets up to 30% did not affect the process operation conditions. The concentrations of H2, CO, CO2, and CH4 from a binary mixture of RDF pellets and wood chips were in the same ranges as that from pure wood chips. The lower heating value of the product gas was as high as 13.2−13.6 MJ/Nm3 for all the R/F ratio fuels. It is concluded that binary mixtures of RDF pellets and wood chips with the mass percent of R/F ratio of 10−30% are good feedstocks in the Nong Bua dual fluidised bed gasification process. The tar content, however, from the binary mixtures of RDF pellets and wood chips was higher than that of pure wood... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy strategy, energy transformation, European Union, ranking, sustainable energy development, taxonomical analysis, TOPSIS method
Over the past few years, considerable emphasis has been put on decarbonization, which, in the context of the recent events in Europe, proves that mixing energy sources is the best strategy. This article discusses ways in which individual EU member states manage their energy source diversification, while comparing their levels of fossil fuels and renewable energy sources (RESs) usage. The research data was acquired from the Eurostat website and comprises of 15 indicators describing the use of energy both from conventional and renewable sources in the European Union, in 2019. The study employs taxonomical methods, such as ranking and cluster analysis. The authors put forward a hypothesis that EU member states approach the use of energy resources in several ways. There are countries which take advantage of both traditional and renewable sources (Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and Italy). However, there is a group of states that relies on a single energy source and exclusively uses either... [more]

An Analytical Hierarchy-Based Method for Quantifying Hydraulic Fracturing Stimulation to Improve Geothermal Well Productivity
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbonate reservoirs, enhanced geothermal systems, fracability index, hydraulic fracturing, seismic inversion
Hydraulic fracturing (HF) has been used for years to enhance oil and gas production from conventional and unconventional reservoirs. HF in enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) has become increasingly common in recent years. In EGS, hydraulic fracturing creates a geothermal collector in impermeable or low-permeable hot dry rocks. Artificial fracture networks in the collector allow for a continuous flow of fluid in a loop connecting at least two wells (injector and producer). However, it is challenging to assess the fracability of geothermal reservoirs for EGS. Consequently, it is necessary to design a method that considers multiple parameters when evaluating the potential of geothermal development. This study proposes an improved fracability index model (FI) based on the influences of fracability-related geomechanical and petrophysical properties. These include brittle minerals composition, fracture toughness, minimum horizontal in-situ stress, a brittleness index model, and temperature ef... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: extreme learning machine, improved honey badger algorithm, insulated-gate bipolar transistors, junction temperature prediction, wind power system
To reduce carbon dioxide emissions, wind power generation is receiving more attention. The conversion of wind energy into electricity requires frequent use of insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). Therefore, it is important to improve their reliability. This study proposed a method to predict the junction temperature of IGBTs, which helps to improve their reliability. Limited by the bad working environment, the physical temperature measurement method proposed by previous research is difficult to apply. Therefore, a junction temperature prediction method based on an extreme learning machine optimized by an improved honey badger algorithm was proposed in this study. First, the data of junction temperature were obtained by the electro-heat coupling model method. Then, the accuracy of the proposed method was verified with the data. The results show that the average absolute error of the proposed method is 0.0303 °C, which is 10.62%, 11.14%, 91.67%, and 95.54% lower than that of the e... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: low-permeability conglomerate, Mahu Sag, microscopic pore structure, migration rule, NMR, reservoir type
The low-permeability conglomerate reservoir in the Mahu Sag has great resource potential, but its strong heterogeneity and complex microscopic pore structure lead to a high oil-gas decline ratio and low recovery ratio. Clarifying the migration rule of crude oil in microscopic pore throat of different scales is the premise of efficient reservoir development. The low-permeability conglomerate reservoir of the Baikouquan Formation in the Mahu Sag is selected as the research object, and two NMR experimental methods of centrifugal displacement and imbibition replacement are designed to reveal the differences in the migration rule of crude oil in different pore throats. According to the lithology and physical properties, the reservoirs in the study area can be divided into four categories: sandy grain-supported conglomerates, gravelly coarse sandstones, sandy-gravelly matrix-supported conglomerates and argillaceous-supported conglomerates. Energy is an essential component for prosperity, economic growth, and development and has become a basic necessity for humans, but at the same time, it has an impact on the environment. Therefore, it is believed that, in the coming future, renewable energy will play an important part in fulfilling the energy demand. In that respect, geothermal energy will be vital as it is a continuous source of energy that is not affected by metrological conditions and can be used in power generation or domestic heating. Many countries around the globe are actively producing energy from geothermal resources. However, the extraction of the heat from the subsurface comes with challenges such as subsurface environment, wellbore instability, corrosion, loss of circulation, and cementing operation. However, one of the most challenging and critical tasks is the zonal isolation of the geothermal well. February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: enhanced heat transfer, response surface method, sensitivity analysis, subcooled boiling, swirl tube
Excellent heat transfer performance has increasingly become a key issue that needs to be solved urgently in the development process of large-scale fusion equipment. The study of heat transfer performance improvement to scientifically and reasonably determine the design parameters of the high heat flow (HHF) components of fusion reactors based on the efficient in-depth analysis of the heat transfer mechanism and its sensitive factors is of great significance. In this paper, a liquid-vapor two-phase flow model with subcooled boiling for a large length-diameter ratio swirl tube structure in the HHF calorimeter component is proposed to analyze the effects of key design parameters (such as inlet temperature of cooling water flow, swirl tube structure parameters, etc.) on its heat transfer performance. Sensor Technologies for Transmission and Distribution Systems: A Review of the Latest Developments
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Big Data, condition-based grid maintenance, pervasive sensing, predictive grid maintenance, smart sensors, wide area monitoring system, wireless sensing network (WSN)
The transmission and distribution systems are essential in facilitating power flow from the source multiple loads over large distances with high magnitudes of voltages and currents. Hence, the monitoring and control of various components of these structures are crucial. Traditionally, this was implemented by sensing only the grid current and grid voltage parameters through coils, clamps, or instrument transformers. However, these have bulky structures that restrict them to the substation and have installation and maintenance issues due to their direct contact with high voltage conductors. Currently, the power grid is undergoing various developments e.g., penetration of renewable energy sources, remote control, and automation, bidirectional power flow, etc. These developments call for compact and energy-efficient sensors to sense multiple grid parameters such as the magnetic field data, temperature, humidity, acoustics, etc., to enable real time, wide area monitoring and the predictive... Development of MVMD-EO-LSTM Model for a Short-Term Photovoltaic Power Prediction
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: equilibrium optimizer (EO), feature extraction, long short-term memory (LSTM), multiresolution variational modal decomposition (MVMD), short-term PV power forecast, solar energy
The accuracy and stability of short-term photovoltaic (PV) power prediction is crucial for power planning and dispatching in a grid system. For this reason, the multi-resolution variational modal decomposition (MVMD) method is proposed to achieve multi-scale input features mining for short-term PV power prediction. Here, the MVMD combined with Spearman extracts correlation features of the weather data. An equilibrium optimizer (EO) is integrated with MVMD to achieve optimal values of the long short-term memory (LSTM) parameters. Firstly, the correlation of input features is determined and selected by Spearman. The MVMD model is used to mine the high correlation features of solar radiation and conduct cross-correlation analysis to extract input feature components. Secondly, the similar weather days of the sample set are classified to ensure a good adaptability in different weather situations. A Coal Seam Thickness Prediction Model Based on CPSAC and WOA−LS-SVM: A Case Study on the ZJ Mine in the Huainan Coalfield
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: comprehensive preference, dimensional reduction, prediction model, seismic attribute, seismic attributes combination, WOA–LS-SVM
The precise prediction of coal seam thickness in operating mines is crucial for the construction of transparent mines. Geological borehole data or a small amount of seismic information is frequently used in traditional coal seam thickness prediction methods; however, these methods have poor precision. In this study, we introduced a model for predicting coal seam thickness based on the comprehensive preference for seismic attribute combination (CPSAC) and the least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) optimized by the whale optimization algorithm (WOA). We used the CPSAC to modify the mass disturbed data in the seismic attribute data to predict the coal seam thickness. To achieve this the sample size was reduced by optimizing the seismic attribute combinations, and the modified attribute data was entered into the LS-SVM., Furthermore, to create an accurate prediction model for coal thickness, we employed the WOA to determine the optimal penalty coefficient and kernel coefficient of t... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Atlantic salmon, cold energy utilization, land-based aquaculture, liquefied natural gas cold energy
A new concept of land-based Atlantic salmon farming utilizing liquefied natural gas (LNG) cold energy is proposed. In this study, laboratory-scale experiments were conducted using liquid nitrogen as a cold energy source to confirm whether the water temperature of a fish farming tank can reach below 17 °C within an hour. In particular, the effects of the mass flow rates of liquid nitrogen (0.0075, 0.01, and 0.0125 kg/s) and water (0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 kg/s) on the cooling performances of water were investigated. The results showed that a higher mass flow rate of liquid nitrogen results in a better water cooling performance. In the case of varying the mass flow rate of liquid nitrogen, it was observed that the mass flow rate of 0.0125 kg/s showed the greatest water temperature difference of 9.10 °C/h, followed by that of 0.01 kg/s (5.88 °C/h), and 0.0075 kg/s (5.06 °C/h). Renewable Energy and Energy Reductions or Solar Geoengineering for Climate Change Mitigation?
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: albedo modification, climate change, energy reductions, geoengineering costs, implementation time, ocean acidification, ocean alkalinity enhancement, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar geoengineering
This review explores the question: should the world rely wholly or partially on solar geoengineering (SG) to mitigate climate change (CC), or on renewable energy, together with deep energy reductions? Recent thinking is for SG to only supplement more conventional climate change mitigation methods. However, we first show that conventional mitigation methods are not working., given that global annual CO2 emissions are still rising, so it is far more likely that SG will be called upon to counter most anthropogenic CC, as early research proposed. The paper next examines the various SG proposals that have been considered and their objectives. Future choices could be between an increasingly unpredictable climate, and SG, with its own risks and unknowns, or deep energy reductions and RE. The claim is that SG has far lower costs for a given climate forcing reduction compared with more conventional methods, and equally important, could be quickly implemented, producing temperature reductions in... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Coordination of Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs), Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), RESs integration
The increasing penetration of large-scale Renewable Energy Sources (RESs) has raised several challenges for power grid operation. Power management solutions supporting the integration of RESs, such as those based on energy storage technologies, are generally costly. Alternatively, promoting a more proactive role of the Distribution System Operator (DSO) to successfully manage RESs’ uncertainty, and take advantage of their flexible resources for the provision of ancillary services, can avoid installing expensive devices in the network and reduce costs. In this line, improved coordination between Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and DSOs is highly desirable. In this paper, the feasibility of solving different aspects of the integration of RESs through an improved TSO/DSO coordination is evaluated. In particular, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is conducted to study the most relevant TSO/DSO coordination approaches, exclusively focused on integrating distributed RESs, currently a... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: chimney effect, finned-tube heat exchangers, natural convection
In the paper, experimental analyses of the free convection heating transfer in a flat wavy-fin heat exchanger with the dimensions of 500 × 500 mm were investigated. The experimental reserch mainly included determining the average heat flux and heat-transfer coefficient for two selected types of finned heat exchangers. First, tests were conducted for exchangers without considering the so-called ’chimney’ effect; these tests will be treated as reference studies. Then, experiments for specially designed ’chimneys’ over the exchanger with heights of 350, 850, and 1350 mm, respectively, were carried out again. The analyses were performed for an average temperature difference between the heat-exchange surface and the environment in the range of 18 to 55 K. The experimental results demonstrated that, compared to the exchanger without a chimney, the addition of a chimney significantly affects the improvement in the thermal performance of the heat exchanger under natural convection conditions.... Micro turbojets are used for propelling radio-controlled aircraft, aerial targets, and personal air vehicles. When compared to full-scale engines, they are characterized by relatively low efficiency and durability. In this context, the degraded performance of gas path components could lead to an unacceptable reduction in the overall engine performance. In this work, a data-driven model based on a conventional artificial neural network (ANN) and an extreme learning machine (ELM) was used for estimating the performance degradation of the micro turbojet. The training datasets containing the performance data of the engine with degraded components were generated using the validated GSP model and the Monte Carlo approach. In particular, compressor and turbine performance degradation were simulated for three different flight regimes. It was confirmed that component degradation had a similar impact in flight than at sea level. Finally, the datasets were used in the training and testing process... [more]

Flat surfaces with different patterns of hydrophobic spots were employed for experimental investigation of boiling heat transfer. In one case, hydrophobic spots were created on a smooth copper surface and on a surface coated with arrays of micrococoons from silicon oxide nanowires by vapor deposition of a fluoropolymer. In the second case, a hydrophobic coating was deposited on heater surfaces with cavity microstructures formed by laser ablation and chemisorption of fluorinated methoxysilane. Water under saturation conditions at atmospheric pressure was used as the working liquid. The temperature of the heating surface was varied from 100 to 125 °C, and the maximum value of the heat flux was 160 W/cm2. Boiling heat transfer on the test biphilic surfaces was significantly (up to 600%) higher than on non-biphilic surfaces.
